This is a standalone crime thriller
Most of the plot was predictable unfortunately
There is some tension and I did like the ending
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience
This is, as to be expected from Peter James, a page-turner. The island setting helps convey a threatening claustrophobia as the oblivious Georgie can't avoid the person who has developed an obsession with her. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of medical thrillers so I found all of the obs and gynae details a bit much but, obviously, that won't bother everyone.
This is the first standalone book I’ve read by Peter James and didn’t know what to expect as his Roy Grace series is excellent. I found it a little slow to begin with but it definitely picked up the pace and had you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happened!
Couldn't stop reading! A twisted tale of obsession that is compelling and gripping. I'm a massive fan of Peter James and he never disappoints. Can't wait for the next one.
A great standalone thriller from Peter James, I love the way he writes and his stories.
More please
This was the first standalone book I have read by Peter James, and it was totally worth my time and effort. It was a great read, and kept my glued until the end. Recommended for anyone who loves a great read by a talented author.
Marcus Valentine has everything, a wife and three children that love him and an amazing job. Or, is there something missing?
A motoring accident, for which he is wholly responsible, rekindles memories of a lost love from his youth. This develops into an unhealthy obsession with tragic circumstances. Marcus truly believes he is omnipotent.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book.
I’m afraid that this title fell flat for me, and I did not enjoy the read at all. Boring and not at all a thriller.
One star from me.

A creepy and disturbing look into obsession and the lengths that people will go to if fixated on them. A great novel as always from Peter James
Marcus Valentine is an obstetrician and gynae-oncology surgeon who lives on the island of Jersey. Marcus is married with three children and considers himself to be the best at all he does. One morning on the way into work he sees a beautiful woman on her morning run, despite almost running her over he realises he cannot stop thinking about her. As luck would have it, he meets Georgie and her fiancée Roger at one of his dinner parties and so begins his obsession.
This dark psychological thriller was a thrilling read and yet another wonderful stand alone novel from Peter James.
This was an enjoyable read, a little predictable at times, but good for the most part. It's a standalone so nothing needs to be read beforehand, and I read it quite quickly. The premise and plot was good but none of the characters drew me in. A chance encounter one morning with a jogger brings Doctor Marcus Valentine right back to an infatuation he had many moons ago. Seeing her again, after such a long time, makes him begin, once again, to fantasise about rekindling the flame. He becomes entirely consumed by his obsession, so much so that it almost ruins his life, and hers. This was enjoyable and quite gripping. I can really imagine it as a movie, with a very creepy Alan Cummings or Guy Pearse in the role of doctor as the lead protagonist.
I am a big fan of Peter James and this stand-alone book certainly didn’t disappoint. We meet Georgie who is newly pregnant and in a relationship with Roger, a flying instructor. One morning out jogging she is nearly run over by a man in a Porsche car. Little does she realise the impact this will have on her life. The man in question is Marcus, a top consultant gynaecologist. He is on his second marriage and has three young children but has never got over his first love. When he brakes to avoid Georgie he realises that she is the spitting image of her and is determined to discover her identity. His wife organises a dinner party and he can’t believe his luck when he finds that Georgie is one of the guests and is the fiancée of Roger, who is one of Marcus’s friends. From that moment he becomes totally obsessed with Georgie and is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his job, to be with her. He begins to stalk her using a fitness app to track her moves and his obsessive behaviour results in lives being endangered. The story is told mainly from Marcus’s and Georgie’s points of view. We see how nasty, manipulative and obsessive Marcus becomes and the lengths he goes to in order to be with her. The build up and suspense had me gripped and it is a book I thoroughly recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Loved the Roy Grace series and as much as I liked this book it definitely wasn't as good. I was privileged to be given an early read of this book.
3.5 stars. Consultant Marcus Valentine should be a happy man. He has a great career, lovely wife and family and lives on the beautiful island of Jersey. Then one day he spots someone who just might be the girl he fell for at school. From that point he can think of nothing else. What a monster Peter has created! I had to keep reading just to see how much worse Marcus was going to get. I loved the start and ending although that could have been a bit longer as it seemed to finish in a hurry. Apart from that, well it was quite a ride!
This is the first book I have read by Peter James, and It has certainly encouraged me to search for his other books.
This book has a brilliant storyline that wasn't your typical, run of the mill crime.
Full of interesting, intriguing characters that all play a part in the way the story progresses, there is certainly plenty to keep you guessing to the end.
The plot is full to the brim with action, drama and suspense and certainly has you holding your breath at times!
This is most definitely a book I would recommend to others.
#IFollowYou #NetGalley This was the first standalone book I have read by Peter James but having loved the Roy Grace series I was keen to try this one. Set on the island of Jersey, it was a very different storyline to the usual crime series. Well written, with plenty of action which I love and an ending that had me on the edge of my seat! I would definitely recommend this book!
For information, this is a standalone book and not part of this author’s long running Roy Grace series. I’ve read all of this author’s books and have to admit I find his standalone novels just as gripping as the series books. This book is based in Jersey, and follows the story of two main characters – Marcus Valentine and Georgie McClean. Georgie McClean is a personal trainer, and whilst out running one morning, Marcus nearly hits her with his car in a momentary lapse of concentration. As Marcus catches a glimpse of her as she runs off, he’s thinks Georgie might be Lynette, a girl who he was infatuated with and was humiliated by as a teenager. As the story moves on Marcus tracks Georgie down and begins to develops an unhealthy obsession with her, and nothing will stop him until Georgie belongs to him…
I really enjoyed this book. Georgie McClean is a sweet character. She’s newly pregnant and in a fairly new relationship with flying instructor, Roger. Life seems good for her; her pregnancy is progressing nicely and Roger adores her. Marcus Valentine is not a nice man however! On the surface, he comes across well and when dealing with his patients you’d think you couldn’t be in better hands. He does have a dark side though, and we get a little glimpse at the beginning of Marcus’s early years, which does give an indication as to why he’s like he is now. It’s not very often I come across a character which makes my skin crawl, but Marcus is definitely one of them.
The story, for me, works really well. Told mainly from Georgie and Marcus’s perspectives it moves along at a fairly fast pace. We get to see the lengths that Marcus will go to in order to be around Georgie, and I found it scary how easy it was to use fitness and running apps to find out so much about people without them realising!! I found myself wanting to shout at the pages to tell Georgie not to do this and don’t do that, but the tension of her doing them anyway had me on the edge of my seat for most of the book.
This is certainly a book of dark and sinister obsession, and whilst you don’t need to know ‘whodunnit’, you do need to know why and how!! The storylines twists and turns itself all the way through to its shocking ending, ensuring my eyes never left the page for a second. As with his other books, this author has again given us a gripping, hypnotic and thrilling story which left me wanting more! Would definitely recommend!
I love Peter James’ Roy Grace series so thought I would give this standalone thriller ago. I am pleased to say I wasn’t disappointed.
Marcus Valentine is a top Obstetrician on the island of Jersey. He’s married with young children but a chance encounter with Georgie leaves him obsessed !! But where will his obsession lead ?
This a great thriller about obsession !! There is nothing likeable about Marcus which makes his actions even worse !! If you love a good tense thriller then this is a great book for you.
Thank you to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
Sadly as much as I love the Roy Grace series written by Peter James I struggled somewhat with this one. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high given that the book is set in my home on the Island of Jersey.
I Follow You is a story of a stalker, one who uses a running app to gain access to his victims. The author is very keen to give a flavour of the beautiful island where he moved to relatively recently but tended to try to cram too much detail which meant that for me I got bogged down by which way the perpetrator of the crime was driving along the avenue and whether I agreed with his choice of restaurant for dinner! That may be the consequence of the book being set on a small island though. The use of a real consultant complete with personal details completely threw me although I appreciate the recognition of a new friend, it is shock when you have sat across the desk from this particular person in real life.
The story itself seemed to need a fair bit of padding, it wasn't a bad story but perhaps because of my familiarity with place and people, I wasn't always wholly convinced by the characters or the plot.
