I’m not going to lie at the start I did wonder if this was going to be for me as I totally got the wrong idea of how it was going to go. But WOW was I wrong. What a rollercoaster listen. Loved the storyline and all the twists and turns it throws at you. Short chapters and slipping from one character to another that really kept you wanting more. Loved the different narrators and the different accents really added to the story along with being really easy to listen to. Really good listen with a really good storyline.
Thanks to Netgalley and Orion for the opportunity to read this ARC and review that was published on the 28th of Aug.
Really enjoyed this. Full of twists & turns a very well written & narrated story. I’d recommend this to anyone.
Phew this book was full of twists and turns. Lots of different characters, which surprisingly didn't become confusing. I liked the use of different people for each character, it sounds much better than someone trying to do all voices. The story is basically around the "dark web" and that you can buy or do anything. Need someone murdered? They can help.....Need a new organ? They can help - But at what cost? What will they want from you? It was a great listen that I would recommend
This one is a good one. I'm glad I got it as an audiobook, and I could listen while I was doing things around the house. Definitely kept me interested.
This audiobook really had me gripped! The story follows Marianne as she discovers a dark web browser on her late husband's laptop and the different narrations from different characters keeps the book interesting and exciting. Sam's chapters are without a doubt the most intriguing - her story of how she came into the work she does is equally exciting as it is tragic.
The book is split into three parts with the middle section acting as a flashback to uncover the truths of Marianne's husband, Greg, and his involvement in the dark web. This structure is successful in allowing the plot to develop at just the right pace to keep the reader hooked. However, I found moments in the middle section to become ever so slightly repetitive.
The conclusion, along with the revelation of who is organising all of the illegal activity, is interesting, but feels slightly forced and unconvincing. It seems like the person who is revealed to be in charge was chosen last minute, rather than being the end point towards which all moments are headed. There seems to be a message of female solidarity hinted at in the final section, and whilst this is appreciated, I felt like it was somewhat shoehorned in and not entirely convincing.
Nevertheless, an enjoyable, gripping thriller!
I’m not going to lie - I didn’t get through this the first time I read it, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, I got to 60% and realise I had absolutely no idea what was happening!
I tried it again today, and although I got the audiobook from netgalley I also bought the kindle version so that I could “read” along with it & that really helped!
I was sucked in right from the beginning and honestly couldn’t put it down, I finished it in one day with time to spare - there are so many elements and so many things happening that you really have to concentrate but it was definitely worth it! - I definitely did not see the conclusion coming, I love a book that can keep me hooked and also not know the ending!
I went into this book blind, I saw this was a “listen now” on NetGalley and thought why the heck not. I loved the cover and I briefly looked at the blurb. When you see the opening line saying someone wants you dead and there is a hit list, I was intrigued. I did not expect the journey down the dark web and the truths we would learn.
The narration done by 5 different people really brought the characters to life. It added to the story to have a different voice for them. This story, however, is really Sam’s story. Yes, we start our adventure meeting Marianne, who is at the anniversary of Greg, her husbands’ death or was it murder? We follow her and Sam in the first part of the book. The second part it’s Sam and Greg’s story and the final part is well just explosive.
It took me a while to get into the book, because well my reading mojo has gone, but the book kept its grips in me. I mean how would you feel if you ever found a way to get on to the dark web and then on a website, a hit list and find your name. Marianne then enters a world she is just not ready for. I know I wasn’t ready for it!
My heart broke for Greg, just a guy trying to do the right thing. His intentions are there but he is sucked into a dirty, lewd world that I did not see coming for miles. This was hard to listen to at some points, well mainly because you know he has died. But more, as you see who he is, what is trying to do, not how Marianne saw him and all the guilt he carries with him.
I love how everything was kept hidden from the reader. Holly slowly started linking the people and the storylines together. She teases it out slowly ensure you are hooked, ensure you are enveloped in the characters lives before she practically implodes their (and your) worlds.
Despite everything we learn about Sam, I have to say I liked her. Believe it or not, she had morals and she has a code. It is not until later on that we see the bigger picture of what her little missions impacted, but by then it is too late. But not only in what she is engineering but how her life outside of this has been impacted
The clanger in the final part, I did not have a scooby. Maybe I should have but I didn’t, I loved that I learned everything when Marianne did. Head blown. It is the cat and the mouse story, but do you even know who the cat really is?
This is my first book by Holly and I have a few more I will be checking out. The writing is engaging and it really does make you question, I mean what the frick would you do? As I said earlier, the audiobook was really brought to life by the narrators and I do love productions where we have more that one narrator. It gives the story a bit more oomph as the voices add their own spice to the story. I am looking forward to my next outing with Holly and her books.
This audio book is delivered to us in three darkly delicous sections! If you love thrillers then this is the book for you!
Marianne’s husband dies in a motorbike accident and, searching through his laptop one day, she discovers something shocking - her name is on a HIT LIST! The narrators each brought their characters to life and kept the momentum of this well crafted book going right through to the twist at the end that you will not see coming!!!
Thankyou to Netgalley for this audio book in return for my honest review.
I don’t read too many thrillers but this one was a corker! I like to mix things up a bit in my genres and this was just the ticket. Genuinely had me looking over my shoulder whilst absorbed in the story on my dog walks, especially as the nights are starting to draw-in earlier!
The story begins with Marianne who sadly lost her hubby a year ago in a bike accident. Stricken with grief and a slight pang of guilt as she is now dating someone else, she attempts to reconnect by reminiscing through old belongings of Greg’s, her late husband. Imagine her shock and terror whilst looking on Greg’s laptop she stumbles across some info on the deep dark web...a hit list...with her name on it!!!
I won’t say any more about the plot to avoid spoilers, suffice to say, I was gripped and engaged throughout. If you love a good thriller I can’t recommend this enough. I don’t doubt that the book in the flesh will be a page-turner, however, the audio version in particular, was fantastic. The narrators, five in total, were spot on and added to the suspense and final unexpected climax.
I enjoyed reading the ebook format of ‘The Hit List’ so much that, on seeing it was narrated by multiple narrators, I couldn’t resist listening to the audiobook too!
Does this amazing read work as an audiobook?! Most definitely! It is very ‘listenable’ - the skill of the narrators is evident as they bring this story to life.
The plot, which moves between past and present timelines, revolves around Marianne, who lost her husband, Greg, in a road traffic accident one year previously. Marianne does some snooping around on Greg’s computer, finding out that not only has he been perusing the notorious’ dark web’, but also that her name is featured on an assassins hit list contained there! The questions ‘why’ and how she is associated to the other seemingly random names on the list are answered as the tale unfolds.
This is a gripping tale of ‘cat and mouse’ accompanied by secrets, deceptions and cover-ups that is unique and utterly captivating!
My thanks to Netgalley, author, publisher and narrators for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
Amazingly set up, I result enjoyed the story and the shocking revelation that comes one year after her husband’s death. It’s dark and sinister and well narrated. ,This audiobook had me volunteering to do more road trips so I could listen and find out more.
Brilliant.
Shocking.
Thanks so much ton#NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audioboook in exchange for an honest review
I loved it.
I have struggled with this audiobook because of major technical issues on the NetGalley Shelf app, but I have persevered and finished it so I can provide a review. Although the problems definitely detracted from my enjoyment of the book, it would be unfair on the author and narrators to provide negative feedback because of it.
I loved this book, the narrators were strong and gave me real understanding of their characters' personalities. I did feel it dragged a little in the middle and could have been a faster pace to engage me more.
I'm a bit of a Holly Seddon groupie all the time anyway but The Hit List has blown me away, (if you'll pardon the pun!). There were surprises around every corner, no one was who you thought they were, or did what they were supposed to do. I spent a great deal of this book walking around with my earphones in and my mouth hanging open, looking like some kind of Zombie-moron. I actually gasped out loud so often I nearly had to borrow the inhaler from the man sitting next to me on the bus! (OK, I didn't really but only because there wasn't a man sitting next to me on the bus. That being because I haven't been on a bus since 1984 - but you get the point I'm trying to make). The cast of narrators were like a Who's Who of The Best Voice Performers. I was bereft when the book was over. Taut, tight and tense, this story is so different from anything I've ever listened to before and I'm sure you're going to love it. Treat yourself to a copy today - you can always thank me later!
Audible. Good actor voices that are easy to listen to and engage with.
Marianne is still grieving for husband Greg who was killed in a cycling accident a year ago. On the anniversary of his death, for reasons she can’t entirely explain, she searches his laptop. To her shock she discovers he had been accessing the dark web and further digging reveals that her name and several others are on a Hit List. She is understandably horrified. What had her caring husband, a charity worker no less, got himself into and why on earth is she on the list??? She feels like she’s opened a Pandora’s box - did she actually know her husband of several years? The story is told from several perspectives including Marianne and Greg.
I’ve read all Holly Seddon’s books and loved them all but I think she’s excelled herself in this terrific and twisty thriller. The clever plot contains a multitude of shocks and unwelcome surprises in this fast paced, gripping and compelling story. The storyline is dark black, starting with the dark web and includes blackmail and a faceless, powerful and dangerous group who ensnare people in their web of wickedness, lies and death. It’s a huge and towering story, it’s well constructed and you feel increasingly horrified as the plot unfolds. The multiple points of view works well as you piece together the jigsaw of the truth which reaches a conclusion that is unpredictable and very surprising.
Overall, a terrific and fast paced novel from the very talented Holly
4-5 stars rounded up.
With thanks to NetGalley and Orion for the audible for an honest review.
This book had a very original concept which I was fully engrossed in up until the half way mark where I felt it lagged a little and became a tad repetitive, but then beautifully picked up in the end. Overall very enjoyable.
Thanks to Orion Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the audiobook for review.
The premise of this book really intrigued me.
Marianne’s husband died in an accident. Around a year after his death, she’s going through his laptop, reminiscing, until she finds out he’s been on the dark web. To add to the shock, her name is on a hit list.
Her husband was kind and worked for a charity, but did he have a darker side and want his wife dead?
The story is mainly told from the points of view of Marianne, Greg and Sam.
There are quite a number of characters and it was sometimes confusing to remember who was who. I’m not sure if this is because I was listening to the story. Maybe it would have been easier reading the story as you could flick back and forward to remind yourself.
I didn’t really warm to any of the characters but still enjoyed the story.
Character development is good and my opinion of some characters changed as more was revealed about them.
The narration is really good and each character is voiced by a different narrator. It’s clear and easy to listen to.
The plot is interesting and there’s a lot going on with many twists and turns. Some parts I did feel were maybe a bit far fetched and unrealistic, but it is a work of fiction.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will keep an eye out for more from this author.
The Hit List: Holly Seddon (audiobook version)
Narrated by: Stephanie Racine, Damian Lynch, Chris Reilly, Tuppence Middleton, Perdita Weeks
Marianne was widowed one year ago and she is still grieving the loss of husband Greg. On the 1st anniversary she starts snooping through his laptop and makes a very disturbing discovery…
This is a fast paced story keeping you on your toes and intrigued to find out the outcome.
The Narration is excellent. Each character having its own voice makes it very easy to follow.
I would definitely recommend this exciting read.
I don’t usually opt to read thrillers, but the premise of this one piqued my interest. The idea of a hit list on the dark web pulled me in. The book takes place in England in the near future, with flashbacks to the recent past, as we learn what happened with Greg and why Marianne’s name was on that hit list.
I listened to the audiobook version. The voice actors were all very good. The Scottish accent for Greg made it a bit difficult to understand at first, but gradually it got easier to understand him (for this American).
The plot was quite complex but it was exciting to try to guess the answer to the puzzle of how Marianne got on that hit list and why. I didn’t see the big surprise near the end of the book. I can’t say much more without spoilers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orion/Trapeze for a copy of this audiobook. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Recommended for those who like suspense-filled stories.
Audio version of this book 📚 WOW 🤩 I really enjoyed this book !! Gripping from start to finish with lots of twists and turns along the way! It’s told by four of the characters , which the narrators bring to life , Their stories told by a chapter each that all come together at the end with a dramatic twist ! Very thought provoking and made you ask yourself what you would’ve done in each character’s situation.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. This book started out really good and I really liked it. The middle was a little slow for me, so i found myself skipping chapters to get to the end. May have been better for me to actually read this one vs listen. Just seemed too long to listen to when it wasn't holding my interest in the middle.
