Another great read with plenty of interesting characters. A brilliant insight into family dynamics. Beautifully set in Scotland.
You can’t really go wrong with a festive novel and Sarah Morgan delights her readers once again by inviting you into the world of Gayle Mitchell, acclaimed business woman and celebrated author of self help style bestsellers. She’s a woman many look up to and aspire to be as the novel opens with Gayle preparing for a live TV interview. All is well and good until a request for some publicity shots results in Gayle toppling from her chair reaching for her latest (and aesthetically unpleasing)
award. Temporarily knocked unconscious Gayle’s team are horrified by the turn of events and as they await the ambulance are further mystified by Gayle’s request to notify her eldest daughter of her accident. They are completely unaware of the existence of one daughter let alone two since Gayle is the most private of individuals, driven only by her desire to succeed in the workplace.
Fast forward to the hospital in which Gayle is reunited with both her daughters, Samantha and Ella, an awkward reunion to say the least. Reasons for this family’s estrangement will become crystal clear the deeper you become engrossed in the storyline as will Samantha’s need to protect her younger sister from their mother’s vicious tongue. However it would seem Gayle’s bump to the head has prompted something of a reawakening to the extent she expresses her wish to spend Christmas with them both. Not known for her love of the festive period, the shock from this unexpected declaration is the trigger for everything that follows with the narrative switching from Manhattan to the Scottish Highlands. Is a long overdue reconciliation on the cards with an opportunity to discover the real Gayle underneath her layers of frostiness? Is it too much to hope Samantha and Ella’s love of Christmas can rub off on their ice maiden of a mother?
Choosing to base this novel in the highlands of Scotland was the icing on the cake for me as it’s a place I hold dear to my heart. Naming the romantic hero Brodie, conjured up images of Brodie castle and the beautiful surrounding landscape with a reference to Loch Ness reminding me of a hilarious, if accidental, road trip circumnavigating the whole area!! Kinleven lodge sounds just like the ideal place for a Christmas retreat with its roaring log fires, faux fur throws and hearty Scottish breakfasts combined with Mary’s mouth watering baking accomplishments. Add in the herd of reindeer and what more could you ask for? If Samantha’s company Really Festive Holidays existed she’d have a winning destination on her hands with Kinleven lodge. The author magically transported me with her words to this atmospheric setting where the air is crisp and clean and you can almost hear the crunch of the forest floor underfoot.
As you lose yourself in this fictional winter wonderland you will understand Gayle’s past and her need to maintain her ice queen persona, her style of parenting a way to prevent her own daughters falling into a similar trap.Ella to me is the least complicated of the three women with the cutest four year old daughter imaginable. Can Tabitha’s innocence, exuberance, inquisitiveness and love for all things Christmas thaw her Nanna’s heart and bridge this family divide? Will the two conflicting sides of Samantha, affectionately nicknamed inner and outer Samantha merge into one as she earnestly throws herself into developing a business strategy for the Kinleven estate, alongside Brodie McIntyre? Despite not having the outward appearance of the heroes found in the Regency romances Samantha is so fond of reading, will Brodie ignite the flame of passion in this rather serious woman where all others have previously failed? Whilst it won’t take much stretch of the imagination to work out the answers it’s impossible not to get carried away by this novel’s charming innocence, lightheartedness and Yuletide spirit. As much as anything, it’s a storyline to celebrate success in all its guises, which these characters come to learn along the way.
One more for Christmas has the perfect blend of romance, humour, cozy atmosphere and festive cheer. With warm, friendly characters (in the main!) you can expect a predictable sometimes turbulent ride with a smattering of melodrama as you head towards a happy ever after. This book is literally like a bear hug on a chilly winter’s day. Cocoon yourself within its warm embrace and allow the magic and sparkle to take effect!! Reading into the small hours, this novel filled me with a sense of optimism for the day ahead, enveloping me in a little bubble of happiness I didn’t want popped. Whilst it’s a storyline you won’t remember by this time next year, in terms of pure escapism it’s a delight. If I found this in my Christmas stocking I’d be more than happy and already I can think of a few people who will be receiving this book as a gift. My thanks as always to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read.
Samantha and Ella haven't seen their Mother for 5 years. When Gayle has an accident, she calls her daughters and the family is reunited at Christmas.
I loved this novel. I'm always so excited when a new Sarah Morgan novel is released and this one didn't disappoint. It was warm and comforting and full of Christmas cheer. Just what I needed!
I adore Sarah Morgan’s books. I just feel you can totally lose yourself in them and One More For Christmas is no exception.
Sisters Samantha and Ella love Christmas, it’s their favourite time of the year and Samantha loves nothing more than staying with her sister’s family for the festive season. More so as it makes up for their childhood Christmases lacking in any festive fun. However it appears this year they need to buy another gift for their estranged mother Gayle whom they haven’t seen for five years. Gayle is flying high in her career as an accomplished author of self help books, she takes no prisoners and even works on Christmas Day. If only she’d take some of her own advice. When Gayle has an accident she reaches out to her daughters hoping it’s not too late to make amends.
I devoured this book over a couple of days and found it hard to put down. I thought the characters were relatable and a plot that flowed smoothly. It’s a tale of sisterhood, families, dealing with the past and celebration and is a gorgeous read. I would rate it 4.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and the author for the chance to review.
I like this book by the author , This book is set in the moors of Scotland and tells the story of 2 grown up daughters and their estranged mother and what brings them up to the moors of scotland.
I would give this book 3.5 stars out of 5 and would like to thank Netgalley & HQ for the arc of the book in exchange for this review.
Another brilliant read by Sarah Morgan with the usual mix of drama with twists and turns plus some warmth, humour and romance. The book focuses on an estranged American family who decide to try and spend Christmas together in Scotland where there is another family struggling to come to terms with a death, so plenty going on. The characters are well drawn from the hard headed city business woman to the soft warm homely one at home baking shortbread in the kitchen, so many contrasts. Some parts a little predictable and some a little frustrating but it all comes together to give a great read.
A book to snuggle up with and get Christmassy.
I loved this book, from the first page to the last.it started with 2 sisters that loved Christmas and a mother that they hadn’t seen for 5 years.then to spend Christmas in a Scotland with her.does it go well? Read this book you won’t be disappointed I loved it,best read in a long time.
This is the first sarah Morgan book I've fully read and unfortunately I was a little disappointed. The book started well and I was gripped from the beginning but I then found the middle quite dull, not much really happens, other than wanting to find the truth about the father nothing else really held my attention. When I got to 90% of the book I thought right let's see how the ending goes but then 2 pages later the book finishes. Found it quite an abrupt ending and was hoping there would be more.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Another great book from Sarah.
When Gayle has an accident at work, her daughters Samantha and Ella rush to be by her side despite not seeing her for the last five years. Gayle starts to regret not contacting them in the time as she finds out she has a granddaughter called Tab. Ella tells her that her, her husband Michael, Tab and Samantha are spending Christmas in Scotland. Gayle tells them she wants to go with them and make up for lost time. Will they be able to repair their relationship or will it end in disaster.
I love Sarah Morgan books and this was a great story. All the characters were wonderfully written and the book was a great read. The emotional journey undertaken by the 3 women was lovely to read. The book moved at a great pace and it was a joy to read.
One More for Christmas is the most recent in a long line of fabulous Christmas reads from @Sarahmorganwrites. I’m a massive fan of Sarah’s writing and not just her Christmas novels so I knew I’d definitely be reaching for this. I received a review copy from @hqstories via @netgalley.
We have three main characters in this story. Gayle and her estranged daughters Sarah and Ella. Following an accident Gayle is keen to reconnect with her daughters inviting herself to spend Christmas with them.
The story is very family focused as the two sisters get to know their mother in this new capacity. Each character takes a turn with the narrative throughout the story Everyone learns something about themselves as well as something about the other characters and while Gayle, Ella and Samantha are our main characters throughout they’re not the only family learning to live in a new world.
The story is set in our home country, Scotland! While I absolutely love Sarah’s stories that have settings on the east coast of the USA I enjoyed seeing our country as the Christmassy setting in this novel! We’re huge Outlander fans so there was definitely some Lallybroch vibes for me in my mind for the setting. I always, always cast any Scottish laird type characters as Alastair Mackenzie who played Archie in an old TV show Monarch of the Glen.
Sarah’s written a Christmas novel every year since she started writing 20 years ago so what better than to settle down with than one of her novels this festive period!
A beautifully written Christmas story about family, secrets, love and new beginnings. This is a heart warming story about an estranged family spending Christmas together in wonderful, magical Scotland. It is a story that captures the spirit of Christmas.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
One More for Christmas is another heartwarming Christmas story from the prolific Sarah Morgan. No matter how many she writes the standard never drops or becomes too cliched.
This book explores the inevitable guilt that parents of grown-up children feel and made me feel a whole lot better about my parenting skills and made me feel included.
Of course the plot is very much Christmas candy coated and includes a touching love story, what more could you want?
Disclaimer: if you read this book you may end up spending hours on end trawling the internet for a holiday in the Scottish Highlands!
One More for Christmas follows Christmas loving sisters Samantha and Ella as they navigate the Christmas season with an unexpected guest, their estranged mother Gayle.
A lovely festive read perfect for curling up with in front of the fire.
‘One More for Christmas’ by Sarah Morgan reminds us how the magic of Christmas can sometimes give families the courage to heal old wounds and open themselves up to new experiences.
A successful author, Gayle earns her living telling others how to change their lives for the better. Despite this, she has managed to make a real mess of her own, alienating her two adult daughters in the process. When something happens to make her realise how isolated and lonely she has become in her personal life, she reaches out to her daughters and invites herself to spend Christmas with them.
Ella has a warm, sensitive heart and has always been hurt by how she has failed to live up to her mother’s expectations. So much so, that she hasn’t even shared the changes in her life over the past few years. Samantha, the protective older sister, has an entirely different opinion when it comes to her thoughts on their mother. Neither of Gayle’s daughters are keen to have their Christmas ruined by their mother joining them.
When Samantha’s plans to use work as an excuse backfire, the family find themselves together for Christmas, on holiday in the Scottish Highlands. It is here that they all have experiences they never saw coming – ones that change all their futures.
I give my thanks to Netgalley, the publisher HQ (HarperCollins UK), and the author Sarah Morgan for the opportunity to enjoy this novel in exchange for an impartial review.
3.5/5 stars from me.
I always know that Christmas is on the way when Sarah Morgan's Christmas book comes out. She's the Queen of Christmas and this book did not disappoint. Complex family dynamics, budding romances and accepting each other as we are makes up this beautiful story. Beautiful story!
When you open a Sarah Morgan Christmas book, you know what you are going to get. Romance, family and festive cheer. This kind of book is like a warm hug 🤗 the story of 2 sisters and their relationship with their estranged mother, the rift that kept them apart for years, and a hope that a Christmas spent together will heal the wounds. Chuck in a sexy "laird", an idyllic Scottish manor in the mountains and a sprinkling of snow... and you have yourself the feel good Christmas story that we all need this year! One More For Christmas is out October 22nd.
Many thanks to @netgalley and @hqstories for my advanced copy 😊
Sarah is a great storyteller. As soon as you open the book you're right in there.
Samantha and Ella are estranged from their mother Gayle until she has an accident.
Gayle starts to question how she brought up her daughter's and wants to make amends starting with Christmas.
They all go to Scotland to spend the festive season and to heal rifts.
I loved the descriptions of Scotland. It felt like I was there with them. The snow, reindeer, building snowmen and the cottage.
Loved Mary and all her baking. I could smell the food cooking in her kitchen.
The only niggle I had was the American spelling when in Scotland and it was Kirstie or Brodie's chapters it should be English spellings. Hopefully that will be picked up before publication.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ for the ARC for an honest review
I love Sarah Morgan’s books and this certainly didn’t disappoint. It is a warm festive read that I couldn’t put down. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for a review. I will leave a review on Amazon too.
I have to confess that this is not my usual type of book. I thought I would try and read something in a different genre .it really isn't my type of book though and I didn't really enjoy it. The story was okay and the characters were fine, as I thought the book was well written and it is just not a genre that I particularly like, I am going to give it 4 stars because it is not the author's fault that I chose the wrong type of book ,I am sure other readers who like this style of book will love reading it, I hope so.
