LOVED!!! I’m normally not a graphic novel kinda gal but I flew through this one. I loved reading (from Cath’s perspective) about the twins beginning college separately and the new experiences she and Wren are going through.
My only gripe was it went by wayyyy too quickly!
Thank you for accepting my request.
I love the YA novel and had to read the manga, I am pleased to say I was not disappointed in the slightest.
Beautifully drawn and ended on a standard cliffhanger. Waiting very impatiently for vol 2!
I've read the original Fangirl novel multiple times because I love it so much, so I was thrilled to hear that it was being adapted into a graphic novel version. This first volume of the graphic novels was amazing, and I gobbled it up in one sitting. I can't say enough good things about this graphic novel and I can't wait to read the ones that follow!
Fangirl is a story about Cath and her journey starting college life. Unfortunately this journey means not sharing a room with her twin sister, Wren, anymore. It also means that her dad will be alone for the first time in a long time. Luckily Cath can count on Simon Snow. She’s read his story since she was a young girl with her sister, and is now a prominent fan fiction writer. It seems that Wren is ready to forget about her love for Simon, but Cath can’t let go.
I’ve never actually read any Rainbow Rowell book, including Fangirl, but I have read plenty of manga.
This book was cute, the artstyle is beautiful and the flow is pretty good. I can’t say if this was a good adaptation form the original novel but I can say, as someone with no bias, that this manga is great.
I’m actually really looking forward to reading the next 3 volumes, and maybe some day the novel. But for now this manga has left me reminiscent of my college life and how her feelings sometime mirror my own. I think the manga format lends greatly to this story. It’s a must read for current Rainbow Rowell fans and I think a good starter for new fans, like me.
I read Fangirl earlier this year and though it’s not my usual type of story, I enjoyed how much it reminded me of who I was when I was younger. This was a faithful adaptation into manga and I loved the art style.
I read the original novel version of Fangirl a few years ago and I adored it, so when I saw a manga version was coming I wanted it without question.
Since the time has passed the story felt refreshing enough for me, but also familiar enough. It was wonderful to see the story unfold in a different way, with illustrations - it gave the characters more life and personality for me. I think it translated incredibly well into manga format and didn't loose anything from the original novel. It is cute, endearing and lets you see into the side characters personalities more with their facial expressions and movements. I cannot wait for the rest of this to be released and to get my hands on it,.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange of an honest review.
A brilliant adaptation of Rainbow Rowell’s original novel. The manga style artwork suits the story very well, and the storytelling is quite seamless.
I am a fan of the original text and was apprehensive about a manga version. Honestly, I asked myself if this adaptation even needed to exist. Despite my hesitation, I was pleasantly surprised by this volume. The text stays loyal to the original book, and the art style enhances it.. Even though I know how the story ends, I can't wait to read the next volume! I highly recommend this one and feel confident it will help spread interest in a well-written story that accurately portrays multiple dimensions of mental illness.
This is a pretty spot on adaptation of Fangirl into the graphic novel, manga loving readers. The art was well done.
Aw, I love Fangirl, so a manga/comic adaption is everything I ever wanted! Perfect for fans of the original story, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the rest of the series.
This pulled me right back into the story that I already loved. It felt like a hug from a friend, It was fun read the story again with the added visual art.
Having loved reading Fangirl in novel form this graphic novel takes the story to a new level. Being able to see Cath's reactions to people allows the reader to see not only how uncomfortable she is in her new situation but also how that anxiety can come off as being rude or standoffish. While this was just the first volume and not the book in its entirety I feel that the illustrations and the condensed storyline will be popular with old and new fans alike. I loved the illustrations of Simon and Baz and began to understand the fascination that Cath has with them. Seeing these characters that Cath loves so much I wanted to reread Carry On and Wayward Son all over again! The first volume has me excited for the next and to expand my Rainbow Rowell collection. I cannot wait to introduce people to this new issue of a beloved story.
I enjoyed Fangirl when I read the book a few years ago (might reread soon actually!) so I was quite excited to see this! Personally I thought the story was told well through manga and the illustrations were great and fitted nicely. Obviously the characters didn't look exactly as I'd pictured but I very soon got used to how they looked. Overall I think it's a good adaptation and I'll keep an eye out for the next volumes!
I enjoyed Fangirl when it was released years ago, and I had no idea it was being made into a manga series. It was nice to revisit the world - the story and characters quickly came back to me. This adaptation will be loved by readers who have previously read Fangirl, but could also be read on its own for the first time. My only disappointment is the rest of the series is not available yet to continue on with the story!
It's been a while since I read Fangirl, but when I saw this manga adaptation up on NetGalley, I had to check it out. It was the kind of book I've wanted to re-read but been hesitant to do so because I was worried it wouldn't live up to my memory, and I figured a manga was a good way to re-read it without too much commitment. Thankfully, I actually think I like this storyline even better in manga format! Levi's cuteness comes across really well in the art and his expressions, and I feel like there's less of the initial snooty attitude from Reagan - she doesn't really come across as rude in this manga like I remember her being in the novel, just a bit aloof.
Anyways, the art is cute as can be, and I really enjoyed the beginning to this adaptation! I'm excited to read the other volumes when they come out.
Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this review copy in exchange for an honest review!
I'm not generally a manga/graphic novel reader but for Rainbow Rowell I would make an exception. This was an entire delight and has made me want to drop my TBR and reread Fangirl for the billionth time. The art was lovely, the story was extremely close to the book and it was a great way to spend the evening.
Fangirl is one of all-time favorite books. I own three copies. I was wary of the manga, but I think the author and artist did a good job of adapting the story to the format. Since it is only volume one, you do not get the complete story yet.
One quibble, the book could have stopped a little further in the story. I don't know if they had a specific page count or just broke the story in sections based on the book.
I enjoyed the manga version of Fangirl, which is one of my favorite Rainbow Rowell books! The graphic design is detailed and clearly read and the illustrations serve to move the narrative forward. This is a really dynamic take on the novel and I think people will really enjoy reading it! It would make a great addition for your manga collection.
Advanced copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Publication release in November 2020.
This was a book I wish I had read in high school before going to college and I'm so happy it's being made into a graphic novel. Everything that I remember from my first time reading it is there, the charm and connection. I'll admit the word manga threw me a little because the pages didn't seem to be set up to be read like the manga I normally read, so I caught myself trying to read right to left rather than left to right which seemed to be how the book flowed. This could be because of the digital format, but I would recommend maybe omitting "The Manga" if this book is going to be more like the western graphic novel.. All in all this was a great way to recapture the joy of the original book in a format that opens the story to more readers! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one!
I’ve only read a handful of graphic novels and I’m slowly getting into the genre. I have already read the novel version of Rainbow Rowells fan girl so I thought this would be a good fit.
I was correct this was a really enjoyable read with beautiful illustration. The story line was easy to keep track out. Now I’ve just got to wait for the next volume.
