Even if I'm not a fan of Claire, the MC, I found this book gripping and entertaining.
It's a fast paced story, full of twists and turns, with a lot of secrets and surprises.
It's well plotted and kept me reading.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Dr. Claire Roget, A Forensic Psychiatrist, has been asked to interview Jonah Kobi, a serial killer now serving a life sentence. Kobi admitted to strangling four school girls. However, there is one girl who went missing six year ago and whose body has never been found. Kobi has always maintained his innocence.
Her job is to persuade Kobi to tell her truth about the missing girl and confess to her murder. The girl's father is on his deathbed and wants her found and buried next to him.
Claire is soon drawn into a battle of wits with a dangerous psychopath, as well as a world of dark secrets.
There are other mysteries .. one a patient who wants to go home.... another surrounding Claire's parents ... and an old boyfriend shows up after leaving her months ago. These are left unsolved / unresolved and I look forward to see the next installment. The characters are deftly drawn, and the author has done a fine job is showcasing the interaction between psychiatrist and psychopath.
Although third in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone, however I recommend reading them in order, if only to hear those little nuggets that make this a compelling read.
Many thanks to the author / Severn House / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Dr. Claire Roget, forensic psychiatrist, is asked to interview a serial killer, Jonah Kobi, in an attempt to solve a cold case and find a missing girl. Marvel Trustom has been missing for six years. Can Claire win a battle of wits with a psychopath in order to fulfill the wish of Marvel's dying father?
This is an interesting book that contains two mysteries, one of which has not yet been revealed. The mysteries are complex and held my attention. Claire's interactions with Marvel's family are just as compelling as her interactions with the psychopath Kobi. However, the time spent on Claire's personal life was uninteresting. Her relationship actually ticked me off at times. Her significant other treats her badly and I cannot figure out why she stays with him. Claire is a brilliant psychiatrist. Why would she put up with this?
This is part of a series but can easily be read as a standalone. I received a free copy of this book from Severn House via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
Dr. Claire Roget has been called in to interview Jonah Kobi, who confessed to murdering several young girls but not 14 year old Marvel, who has been missing for six long years. She already has a struggle with one of her own patients so this adds weight to her days. And there's DS Zed Willard, who is pressing her (and he's not a very patient person). She feels a special push though to resolve Marvel's mystery, as her father is dying and wants answers. No spoilers from me about either of the two mysteries here (I'm not even going to tell you what the second one is). It's a well done and twisty story that doesn't descend, as some serial killer stories do, into the incredibly gruesome. The interaction between Claire and Jonah might remind you a bit of Silence of the Lambs but this has it's own merits. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Interesting read.
This was the first book I've read by this author and although it wasn't quite my taste, I did enjoy the two mysteries within the story and the twists and unexpected turns that they took. I didn't really connect with the character which is my reason for the 3 stars.
Good mystery! Dr. Claire Roget works with psychiatric patients. She is asked for help on a cold case. Can she get to the truth about who murdered Marvel Trustom? Or will she lose the battle with a dangerous psychopath?
Thank you NetGalley and Severn House for the eARC.
Dr. Claire Roget, forensic psychiatrist, is called by DS Zed Willard to help on the case of a missing girl, Marvel, a 6-year old cold case. He wants her to try to find the truth by interviewing serial killer Jonah Cobi in jail. He has confessed to the murders of 4 schoolgirls, but will not admit to murdering or hiding the body of Marvel. At the same time Claire is extremely busy with her psychiatric patients; one in particular is proving to be a head scratcher.
I liked this book, there are no gruesome, gratuitous scenes, instead it has two good mysteries with surprising endings and interesting insights on the minds of psychopaths and sociopaths. Claire is not particularly likeable to me and neither is Zed, who seems quite petulant and ungrateful towards Claire. That said, it's a thrilling read that I definitely recommend.
