Eudora Honeysett is quite well, Thank you by Annie Lyons read by Nicolette Mckenzie.
From the blurb:
💜💜💜
If I can choose how to live my own life, why can’t I choose how to die my own death?
Eudora Honeysett is done - with all of it. Having seen first-hand what a prolonged illness can create, the 85-year-old has no intention of leaving things to chance. With one call to a clinic in Switzerland she takes her life into her own hands.
But then 10-year-old Rose arrives in a riot of colour on her doorstep. Now, as precocious Rose takes Eudora on adventures she’d never imagined, she reflects on the trying times of her past and soon finds herself wondering - is she ready for death when she’s only just experienced what it’s like to truly live?
💜💜💜
So I listened to the audiobook of this one and I absolutely loved it, I fell in love with Eudora’s character. She has experienced so much and following her as she works through her grief and to come to the big decision of whether to choose life or choose her death had me both tearful and laughing! Rose’s character was adorable and I love the way she pushes into Eudora’s life and becomes her friend as she herself is lonely after moving from Cornwall and they become firm friends very quickly.
I found myself listening to this story at every opportunity as I was desperate to hear the next part of her story! This book is available on Amazon as an ebook for 99p at the moment and I highly recommend giving it a read!

This is a beautiful story about how the elderly are treated in society, how they fit into society and how they feel about this. It also handles the delicate and emotive subject of death and voluntary assisted death, which is handled with sensitivity and compassion. Given the subject matter - reader caution is advised!
At the start of this story, you really feel for the ageing Eudora; her body is ailing, she’s alone in this world with no one to care for and no one to care about her and she’s not happy. She’s a thorny, brittle character who keeps the world (and everyone in it) at arms length. Which makes you feel for her even more - why is she like this? But she’s a firecracker who doesn’t let bullies get their way - I loved her giving the consultant a talking to. She’s a stickler for courtesy, kindness and manners. I found Eudora’s decision to die on her own terms really hard to understand, but Lyons handles this well and does a great job of making her question this decision as her story continues and the introduction of the wonderful force of nature Rose and kind hearted Stanley come into her life.
Contrasting with all this are Eudora’s past memories starting as a child in the 1940s and right up until more recently. And seeing these glimpses of her former life, really increase your feelings of sympathy for her after all she’s been through.
I loved how this is all about appreciating life - but to do this, you need to put yourself out there. There is goodness, kindness and love everywhere - you just need to look for it. A wonderfully uplifting story - I loved it (and Eudora) so much. Nicolette McKenzie does a cracking job narrating this story - she is Eudora.
I love this, such delightful characters and even though it dealt with some difficult subjects, it was really uplifting and I would recommend it to anyone.
Buy this book now, It's fantastic!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy in exchange for a review.
I thought this story of an older woman unhappy with her life was heartwarming and cute. Eudora Honeysett is 85 and feels like she is done With her life and ready to move on. She is alone and that’s the way it is. But once a young girl and her mom move next door, Eudora’s world changes.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but this was a good story and I love how each chapter ended with a glimpse into Eudora’s past to help tell the story of her life.
Oh god this book got me right in the feels 😩
When I was 10 I befriended my next door neighbour after her husband died, - unfortunately she died 10 years ago.
This story was like a walk down memory lane,
I felt Eudora’d loneliness which broke my heart, and I honestly saw myself in Rose, I was that annoying child who would walk into next doors house and say “hello it’s me from number 3”
I loved seeing their relationship blossom and experience rose slowly breaking down Eudora walls.
There was a completely heartbreaking element to the story that I honestly couldn’t get out of head, I was lucky enough to get the ebook and the audiobook from netgalley & read them at the same time, I was listening to the audiobook but I had my kindle in my hand reading along.
I hightt recommenced the audiobook, it added something special to the story. & I can honestly say that this story will stay with me for a long long time
Thanks to Harper Collins Audio UK/One More Chapter for an advanced copy of Eudora Honeysett is Quite Well, Thank You as part of the One More Chapter Read-Along.
After making a call to Switzerland to find out more about dying on her terms, 85 year old Eudora meets her new neighbor a 10 year old named Rose who doesn't take no for an answer and forms a friendship with her and another neighbor Stanley. Told in a series of flashbacks to growing up and present day, what will Eudora decide to do?
This was extremely heartwarming story that looks at real issues such as getting older, death, being lonely, being a caregiver for a parent and how you never know where relationships can come from. The glimpses into Eudora's past show a lot about her as an older woman and this was extremely well written.
I enjoyed the audiobook, but at times it was a little slow moving, I think I might have enjoyed reading this one a little more than listening.
What can I say? This is an amazing book which left me speechless and it is now one of my favourite books. I really loved it and highly recommend it! It was a delight to read, and for me, it was a heart filled, emotional book, with many ups and downs, which had me smiling one minute and crying the next.
The book is about a lovely and sweet old lady called Eudora who befriends a cute little girl called Rose and an older gentleman called Stanley. Together the trio have some lovely adventures and they grow to love each other very much.
Throughout the book, Eudora wishes to die, as she does not feel as though she has much left to live for, and so she arranges to die in a clinic, but does she go through with it? Rose and Stanley show her what life really is and she lives the last part of her life in happiness with her new friends, who are like family to her and she becomes very peaceful and content.
The story has flashbacks to Eudora's life when she was younger and this was very interesting.
The book reminded me of the book A Man Called Ove.
I listened to the audio version of this book through the netgalley app and this was a wonderful experience. The narrator was absolutely amazing and her performance was outstanding! I also loved the title of the book and the bright, colourful book cover.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Some authors have an ability to take a delicate, complex subject and make it enjoyable and meaningful. Annie Lyons does just that in Eudora Honeysett is Quite Well, Thank You.
Eudora Honeysett is an eighty-five year old woman who lives alone. Physically, she does quite well swimming regularly and getting around to the shops. But emotionally, her life has been one filled with challenge. Eudora has always been so very responsible, always putting others’ needs ahead of her own. She is full of despair and contemplating how she would like to see her life end before the choice is taken away from her. Indeed, she begins exploring euthanasia in Switzerland. Then, one day a new young family moves in next door providing Eudora with something she didn’t even realize she was missing.
Rose is the ten year old that lives next door to Eudora. She is full of endless energy, enthusiasm and has a forthright way of speaking. Eudora and Rose become great friends, and bring out the best in one another. They soon add a fellow octogenarian, Stanley, to their trio and the three grow to develop one of the most caring and respectful relationships I can remember in the literary world.
The book is extremely moving. It is told from two time frames - Eudora throughout the years told in a series of memories, and now. The characters are all well-developed and likeable. The book flows well and made me want to read on. Aging and the need to feel productive throughout our lives are themes in the book. Eudora’s past relationships and experiences in her life had kept her isolated for much of her later years: all too common in the way our culture perceives aging. It’s too bad we all don’t have a Rose to bring joy back into our lives as we enter our senior years.
I listened to the audiobook edition of this book which was narrated by Nicolette McKenzie who gave a superb performance. The versatility in her voice captures the age, gender and personalties of the characters very well. I would recommend listening to the audiobook version of this book which enhanced an already wonderful story.
Thanks to Netgalley and HarperCollins Audio UK for the ARC of this book in exchange for the honest review provided here.
What a lovely listen. Poignant, moving and immensely enjoyable.
Eudora is a wonderful character, but my favourite has to be Rose- she was adorable!
The narration was good too. Whilst it took me a while to get used to the narrator's voice, she did an excellent job of distinguishing between the various characters.
At age 85 Eudora Honeysett has decided she will end her life with dignity; no drooling, dementia or diapers for her. So she books an appointment to end her life in Switzerland. Eudora should be all set, but she had counted on 10 year old Rose appearing in her life. She allows Rose to take her along on adventures, and finds herself responding with almost childlike glee. And all this fun and excitement has Eudora wondering if she is really ready to die just yet. This beautiful and moving story had me laughing one minute and crying the next. McKenzie is superb, listeners will have no doubt they are listening to “Eudora”, telling her own story
A gloriously uplifting and life-affirming book about the power of friendship and love. I was totally captivated in Eudora's story of her childhood and adolescence. What an honourable young woman she was. With the new neighbours and Stan, she got an opportunity she richly deserved but had evaded her. You would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the burgeoning relationship between Eudora and Rose, Stan and Rose, Eudora and Stan. I also cried buckets. Nicolette McKenzie was perfectly cast in the role of Eudora and her performance was nuanced and superb. All in all I was really surprised by how much I loved this as the title, Eudora Honeysett is Quite Well, Thank You led me to believe this was going to be some kind of Eleanor Oliphant rip-off. It wasn't anything like that book and was wonderfully special in it's very own way. If you want to listen to a book which will make you feel good about your fellow man, go for this. Loved, loved, loved it.
Eudora ya little ball buster!
I'm so glad in the end she decided to die with people who loved her and not alone.
Rose and Stanley were such beautiful characters and were such a strong part of making this story.
I was lucky to receive an ebook and an audiobook. The narrator is such a perfect match for the story, she sounds exactly what Eudora should sound like. She really brought the story to life. I didn't want this book to end!
Such a sweet story, Eudora is at the stage in life where shes had enough of living and wants to die on her own terms. After a fall she meets another frail and old woman in hospital who gives her a leaflet for a Swiss clinic that helps with assisted dying ... ok this does sound depressing but stay with me, its gets better.
The story is mainly set in the present day but we get glimpses of Eudoras life as a young child from 1940's onwards. Where she had a complicated relationship with her Mother and her younger sister. These give the reader a glimpse of Eudoras past and what shapes her life. I find these stories interesting and quite sad at times.
She starts her enquiry about the clinic but then she meets Rosie and Stanley ...
A lovely story with funny, laugh out loud moments as well as sad times. I really enjoyed this book
