I really like this book. As a beginner to natural cleaning, I welcome any and all advice, and this book seems to have a formula for most everything I need. One feature I was really happy to see is the chart in the beginning of the book that offers a listing of several essential oils and whether they have antiviral, antifungal, antibiotic, and/or antibacterial properties. For example, Tea Tree and Lemon are all four of those qualitied. This would be extremely useful in concocting one’s own cleaners, even independent of the book.
There is also a small “glossary” of ingredients you may need and some even have suggestions of where you can buy them. This is useful for me because where I live, there are no health food stores nearby and some things can be hard to source.
All in all, I think this book is great to have on hand. I have made a couple of the formulas, and I feel good knowing that I am not contributing to putting poisons out into the environment. I think this would be a valuable asset to anyone’s bookshelf.
This all-encompassing cleaning book guides cleaners through home, yard, and vehicle cleaning how-to’s, recipes and tips! Ways to rid your space of pesky insects are also included. A truly essential cleaning guide, 5 stars!
If you are a beginner at making your own natural cleaning products then look no further. This is full of fantastic info.
I am very much recommending this book to everyone.
I found this very helpful! I have a big interests in natural and clean living. Very good book and resource to have an i recommend it.
Thank you Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!!
Tl;DR -- A pleasantly laid out book that offers many a recipe for the ecologically friendly homemaker. Initial financial output substantial to make the suggested concoctions, however long-term likely cost savings.
My favorite bits of this book involved the typeface and layout. Like the subject, it's clean, fresh and uncluttered.
The meat of the book involves many an essential oil -based cleaning recipe, a handy reference tool for those wanting to create their own nontoxic offerings. The introduction bodes well too, with explanations of what each essential oil offers to clean, as well as which ones to avoid (or explicitly avoided in the book) because of higher costs.
There were two things that kept me from giving the book five stars: the availability of many said recipes on the internet, and the occasional preachy tone around choosing earth-friendly products over another. If I only chose a book based on whether I could do some research and find relevant Pinterest pins to give me advice however, I'd never use a library or reference material again. (And who really wants to take health-related advice from a stranger on the internet?)
4☆ An Enjoyable and Informative Read!
The Naturally Clean Home was a very interesting and informative read.
It looks at Natural Solutions to cleaning around the home using essential oils and other natural ingredients.
It's broken up into chapters aiming for different parts of your home :-
The Kitchen, The Bath, The Laundry, Wood Care, Cleaning Metals, Walls and Carpeting, Clearing the Air, The Garage and Basement, The Garden and Landscape and The Home Office.
So as you can see no stone is left unturned. The book appears to be written based in America as some of the ingredients and terminology is a lil different from that of the UK.
However this didn't seem to be any problem at least nothing a quick Google won't sort out.
I definitely picked up some tips and providing I can get hold of some of the essential oils then I'm going to give them a try. Being in lockdown and shielding I'm not sure if will be anytime soon through!
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, I have pets and allergies, so it's nice to come across natural ways to clean the house, keeping everyone safe.
The ingredients and methods are very simple and easy to follow. It basically uses cups and drops of essential oils.
It may end up being a lil costly whilst you stock up on the materials and ingredients, but once you have them it will be a worthwhile investment in the end.
I have searched for years for DIY natural cleaners to use around the home, but I have usually been left with ineffective formulas leaving me with filmy white streaks on kitchen counter and streaks on mirrors and windows, leaving me with the not-so-clean feel and disappointment of failing at making my spaces any cleaner.
Karyn Siegel-Maier's classic natural cleaning bible is now in its third edition, and I completely geeked out over the easy-to-make formulations that I know are going to become staples in my home. She covers everything from the kitchen and bathroom to outdoor spaces and car care (inside and out!).
The Naturally Clean Home goes in-depth about supplies, ingredients, and the effectiveness and safety of each element. I just know that all of these home recipes are going to be fun to make and use, not to mention easy on the bank account. Who doesn't love cleaning their personal spaces and having them scented with natural essential oils? Aromatherapy isn't the only plus of using them - they come with super powers of being antibacterial, antiviral, antibiotic...the list goes on!
We are now in the throes of spring, so what better time than now to pick up this book and get going? After just passing the one-year mark of Covid-19, I am ready to clean out the old and make life look, smell, and feel wonderful. A clean space is a clean mind, is what I like to say. I hope you pick up this book - it's something we all could use. Out March 30th. Happy cleaning!
A book to enable you to clean in a more natural way.
Not utilising chemical products but more environmentally friendly ones instead.
I was neither overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the content of this book because so much of what was offered is fairly easily found on Pinterest. When it comes to books marketed as "natural", "clean", or "green" I keep a fairly high standard because books around environmental concerns are near and dear to my heart. While I appreciated the notes at the beginning of the book about finding essential oils that are 100% pure and of a therapeutic or clinical grade was very nice to see but I would have found it even more helpful to have an explainer of the cons to essential oils. I see this book as a great primer for someone who is newly coming into the 'green' or 'Eco-conscious' lifestyle but I think it is important for fans of essential oils to present the full facts about them for novices. I would have liked this book just a bit more if there had been alternative options for the inclusion of essential oils in every recipe and having some recipes that were infused or used alternative resources. I appreciate the effort to put out a solid recipe book that covers all areas of the home in easy to follow recipes. If it is possible to include any kind of reference list that is also something I look for in eco or green books. Thank you for sharing this with me to read.
I want to thank the author and netgalley for gifting me the ebook version. This book is amazing! I got so many ideas on natual cleaning products to make myself. I hate using bleach and harsh chemicals but with the very informative. I have been wanting more and new information on how to clean natrually and this is perfect! I am going to be reading this book over and over.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley and the publishers.
I suffer from astma and I have been looking for a book like this for sometime. i wasn't disappointed with this one. Full of great recipes and recommendations. A good informative read.
The Naturally Clean Home was a really great, in depth, introduction into natural green cleaning. I loved how simple and approachable it made switching to natural cleaning solutions and enjoyed the simple recipes!
I already have started to switch out and add these to my home and am loving the process!!
I love the recipes in this book! This book gives detailed information on switching from commercial cleaning chemicals to natural cleaning. The book starts out explaining "why" you should switch from harmful products, then goes into what supplies you will need, followed by simple DIY recipes. This book is illustrated with pleasant line drawings and an easy to read font. This is my new reference. No more searching on the Internet!
A wonderful book for all who want to go chemical free in their homes with cleaning products. I love the natural receipes for products that are simple and easy to create. I have had a chemical free safe home for 20 years now and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is going chemical free and wants to save money making their own products. The ingredients in the recommended cleaning solutions are healthy and safe for families and pets.
Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the ARC. My review opinion is my own.
Super helpful for those of us that want to cut back on harmful chemicals in our household. There are plenty of different options given in this book if say one scent isn’t for you. Easy to follow with easy to find ingredients. So Whether you are going completely homemade cleaning supplies ,or just replacing a few, this book is great for you.
The Naturally Clean Home by Karyn Siegel-Maier could almost make me enjoy cleaning. The recipes are easy to make and don't require many ingredients one wouldn't already have in the home or are readily available. There is also a lot of general information to make housekeeping easier. A real find.
I absolutely loved this book and the wide range of recipes included to naturally clean your home. I found tons of recipes I plan to use on a regular basis. This book would make an excellent gift.
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
Love, love, love this book!! I cannot say enough good things about it. This is a must for your bookshelf if you are interested in being kind to yourself, your family and the environment.
Karyn provides recipes/formulae for cleaning all aspects of your home, from the kitchen to the garage, car and garden areas. Her recipes are easy to make and easy to use. I have already tried one for laundry fabric softener, and my clothes have come out feeling soft and smelling beautiful (I used lavender essential oil).
After reading this book, I will not be going back to chemical-based cleaning products any more.
Being cooped up for months on end I definitely wanted to learn to be more self sufficient. That being said, this book fit the bill for learning how to make natural cleaning products to use around the house. The instructions were easy to follow and variety of items you could create was useful and relevant to my needs. The charming drawings and easy to follow instructions make this an easy choice for readers wanting to make more natural products to use in their homes.
“The Naturally Clean Home” by Karyn Siegel-Maier has been updated to a third edition, now with even more natural home cleaning remedies than ever before! Offering solutions for everything from easy messes to hard set in stains and dirt, “The Naturally Clean Home” gives creative and affordable solutions for your home.
I love essential oils! While I’m not quite a “tox-free home” I love the natural alternatives where I can. I especially love when my oils can cover me instead of pills for aches and pains and whatever else life throws my way. When I saw this book, I was so excited because it has 150 EASY recipes for people who are looking to switch things out.
I haven’t tested any of the recipes yet, but based on affordability and easiness of cleaning methods, I give this book 4 stars! I can’t wait to start testing out new cleaning recipes and remedies in my home! Thanks to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for this ARC!
