Another winner for Erica Ridley and the series. It is a stand alone but feels like a part 2 of the Fit For a Duke concept. What fun! She is stuck in one place and he is a traveler. It is a delight to see what happens in this unique relationship. He is slow to show his true self and his reasons for travel. I like the story. I read it in one sitting...just had to see where the duke theme would take us.
Jonathan MacLean never returns to a town and this time is no exception. Then he meets the love of his life and he has to learn a new lesson. So does Angelia, the other half of the love of his life. What both have to learn is compromise. That is what leads to a great HEA.
Delightful Regency romance, features an interracial couple.
I enjoyed the smart, witty, and playful banter, picturesque descriptions, and a bit of light history.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I love this series and was thrilled with another romance from Cressmouth! Jonathan MacLean has never felt wanted in his life and so keeps moving never visiting the same location twice. When he's snowbound in the tiny village of Cressmouth, he meets jeweler Angelica Parker. He's immediately smitten with the young woman, but Angelica has no time to entertain the handsome Scot. She's working toward her goal of independence and will let nothing deter her. Can these two move past their rigid viewpoints and enjoy their time together.
This was such an entertaining book featuring a black heroine. I loved how Ms. Ridley teased out some of the history of blacks in England. Even though this is a quick read, I was wholly satisfied with the character development. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Will this Christmas heal his lost little boy’s heart ...
Of all the 10 stories I have read so far, I wonder if this one does not top all the others, even if I just loved many of them like the previous one, which if the other side of the coin, I drank this story in no time.
At first sight, Jonathan might appears as fickle, going from one place to another, strutting his wealth and bragging his many stories, when he is a man haunted by his past.
While presenting himself as a butterfly going from one flower to the next, always looking for fresher pastures. In his peculiar way, he helps others to better themselves, he recognizes overlooked talents and he does what nobody has done for him, he believes in them and is the spark than ignites what was burgeoning.
Angelica sacrificed a part of her freedom to follow her dream, after seven years, she is finally close to her goal, to have her own jewelry. And now she is within an inch of making it real, the seducing tramp won’t wreck her ambitions by making her long for something else.
Jonathan is like a wisp, where he goes, joy follows. He has a way to make people at ease. But for once, he discovers what it is to be appreciated and awaited for one’s self, to get to know others outside the classic passing greetings, to share happy memories...
When Angelica comes to term with her own issues, because while Jonathan is easy to listen, does she hear to her heart’s contents too.
A beautiful tale of a man who does magic with others’ gifts but must learn to receive too and the woman who might partake his life if he is willing to put some roots with her.
5 stars
I was granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
A night with a Duke by Erica Ridley.
This novel is about the town of Cressmouth that is all about Christmas. Angelica is a very talented jeweller working to finally own her own shop in town which is quite a feet for an attractive black woman. Jonathan is an entrepreneur in town for the festivities and he only ever passes through anywhere once. The story follows their chance meeting and if they could possibly have a relationship in the true sense as they both have issues they must overcome.
It is another well written book and although this story is historical it is of a topical theme in our current times.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A disappointing historical novel by this popular author. Both characters lacked depth and chemistry. They are opposites in personality and goals and their interactions are lukewarm at best. Just did not hold my interest due to its very slow storyline and uninspiring characters.
I have yet to read an Erica Ridley historical romance that I didn’t like. One Night With a Duke is the perfect follow up to Dawn with a Duke and I insist you read them together. It works perfectly fine as a stand alone too.
If you are looking for a fun, Christmas treat filled with heart then you’ve got it right here. I was so excited to read this because of all the hints sent Johnathan’s way at the end of Dawn with a Duke. Johnathan is Scottish? dashing, rich and a wanderer who never travels anywhere twice. He makes investments and is partners on an upcoming fashion line (Fit for a Duke).
Jonathan is exploring town when he stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Angelica is an ambitious jeweler with immense talent. Angelica is black and moved to this town from London. She is working very hard to her shop her own. Angelica has streamlined her life so there is no time wasted. Ridley does an excellent job weaving in history through their backstories.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a quick read with low steam and lots of relationship building. If you need a cozy, winter escape this will be delightful.
Thank you NetGalley and Erica Ridley for the chance to read an ARC! All opinions are my own.
Charming adventurer Jonathan and jeweller Angelica meet in Angelica's shop. Jonathan is enamoured by the beautiful jewellery and the artisan behind the counter. Both seem to be working toward opposite goals, philanthropist Jonathan wants to leave the village as soon as the snow storm abates, Angelica is working towards her own shop and recognition as a black female artist. Neither has love on their to-do lists. But for Jonathan Angelica and the little village of Cressmouth offer something he thought he could never have - a home. For Angelica the distracting Jonathan might just be what she needed - something to take her mind off her work and by that spark her creativity.
A historical romcom with lovable characters, a charming setting, and a HEA you're rooting for from the start.
This book was another really sweet romance set in the Town of Cressmouth aka Christmas. Like the previous book, the characters in this one find themselves snowed in, which is of course a perfect time to slow down and get to know one another - even for those as driven as this unlikely pairing.
Angelica Parker is focused on her dreams of becoming recognized as a great jeweler. She is missing time with her family to feverishly work on custom orders. She has faced some discrimination because she's a Black woman - people who refused to believe that she is the one creating all her work. This makes her a little wary of Jonathan MacLean when he breezes into her shop, but he charms her as quickly as he does anyone else.
Jonathan MacLean is equally driven. He's constantly on the move from one town to another, and vows never to visit the same place twice. He finds himself adrift when snowed in without his business partner or the Duke they hope will fund their ready-made clothing business. He's also my favorite romantic lead in a long time. He's charming and cheerful and gives away his money to anyone who will take it. As one might expect, he has hidden depths.
I really loved the interactions between Angela and Jonathan. They had easy chemistry from the start and were just really sweet together.
I also loved that they never went beyond kissing in the book. It felt right for them, and it also made me more comfortable reading it.
There weren't many obstacles, and those there were melted away pretty quickly, but that's what I wanted in a sweet Christmas romance and so I'm very pleased with the experience of reading it. I will definitely be seeking out more of Erica Ridley and the Dukes of Christmas series.
This book centers around drifter Jonathan MacLean who never returns to the same town twice because he is trying to outrun his past. While in a small town for a business meeting he gets snowed in by a blizzard and meets a woman who is just the opposite. She is desperate to stay where she is, she has a business to run. However, she tempts him with dreams he’d long given up on: Home. Community. Love. But his whole reason for coming there was to make this deal that depended on him to then leave and travel from town to town.
The story itself is cute and another take on the Christmas holiday.
I’ve read many books by this author and I feel this one let me down. The storyline was very slow and redundant and seemed to be going nowhere fast. The middle of the book really lagged. Yes, the two main characters evolved, but at a snails pace.
Will I buy another book by this author, yes. Every author has a mediocre book now and again.

“The best adventures are unpredictable.”
Erica Ridley continues her light-hearted holiday romance series with Jonathan and Angelica. One Night with a Duke is an opposites attract love story with the picturesque backdrop of the Christmas village fans of this series have come to expect. Highly recommend!
“She did not need or want a man to make her life complete. Angelica was enough, all on her own. She would prove it.”
CW: Mention of Laudanum addiction and overdose; Abandonment
Summary: Set in Regency England, Jonathan MacLean is a traveling businessman, always seeking adventure and never visiting the same place twice. With his constant travel, he’s never had to go beyond surface-level conversations or build deep connections, which suits him just fine. He’s just passing through Cressmouth Village for a business meeting, but when he meets Angelica, he starts to question his wandering ways.
As a Black woman, Angelica Parker has had to work hard to prove that she’s a talented jeweler and is capable of running her own business. After her brother took over the family’s jewelry business, Angelica moved to Cressmouth to make a name for herself, agreeing to a strict seven-year contract until she can own her business outright. As a condition of her contract, she hasn’t been able to leave the village or risk having to pay exorbitant back rent. So, when charming Scot Jonathan MacLean gets snowed into the village and becomes an increasing distraction, Angelica has to decide if her life might have room for a man after all.
Review: This was such a delight to read. A wonderful, heartwarming Christmas novella, reading this book was like watching your favorite Hallmark Christmas movie with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. I loved that the story highlighted Angelica as an independent business owner who wasn’t willing to compromise her goals for a man. Jonathan is incredibly outgoing and charming, and I loved that he served as the foil to Angelica’s more reserved and quiet nature.
Honestly, my only complaint was that this wasn’t longer! I felt like some of the scenes and character development was a bit rushed, and I absolutely would have wanted to read this story as a longer book.
This is the 10th book in the “12 Dukes of Christmas” series, but I can confirm that this can easily be read as a standalone.
You should read this book if you like: Regency Romance; Christmas; Black heroines; Opposites attract
Similar: Beverly Jenkins; Loretta Chase; Eloisa James
I received this book from NetGalley as an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Regency England in the small village of Cressmouth is the setting for this love story. Jonathan and Angelica are two of the most unconventional lovers for this time. Angelica a self made women working in her own jewellers. Jonathan an itinerant ne’er-do-well spending his life travelling. Christmas is an exciting and romantic time of year and you can follow as our two learn to believe that love can make wondering feet want to stay. This is a light hearted romance to while away an afternoon.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
From the first page of Erica Ridley's One Night with a Duke, I am drawn to Jonathan's charm and never ending chatter although I just knew there was something else beneath that efffable manner and sharp attire.
His meeting with Miss Parker might not have been planned but is my best moment of him, of them.
Through the read, I am drawn to deep characters with silent fears and longing to defy their past while fighting emotions.
Erica Ridley has accomplished a feat in this work. Beautiful writing, Satisfying read.
One Night With a Duke
Erica Ridley
Mr. Jonathon MacClean is an investor, traveler, and all-around nice guy. He does have a policy of never visiting a town more than once. But he has some past issues he needs to take care of. His personality is cheerful, Kind, and respects everyone.
Miss Angelica Parker is beautiful, black, and a very talented Jeweler. She has a huge family and moved to Christmas to open her own shop. They come up to visit her once a year and she does miss them so.
A lovely story of two lonely people but in different ways. When they meet there is an attraction between them. The characters are lovely and engaging. They enjoyed spending time with each other and playing with her nieces. The tale is fun and you watch as he brings her out of the store so she can relax, so she works better. Before she never left her store just kept working as long as she could. She was getting to the end of the seven years so she could own her store. she was concerned about when the time for him to leave and move on would affect her.
I received this ARC from The author and voluntarily reviewed it. (
Another Erica Ridley book read and it was just as fantastic as the previous ones. My favorite author for a bit of lighthearted romance. I love it so much.
This is second part of Dawn with a Duke. This story take part at the same time as Cavin McAlistairs and Lady Isabelle does. Both are snowed in and can't leave. Jonathan McLean is a partner to Cavin.
He is the artist for the new line of affordable clothes that are high quality, affordable, and require no valet. They are for the common people who want to look like a Duke for special events.
He has made it to Cressmouth, the town that is Christmas all year. Unfortunately, Jonathan doesn't hold much with anything to do with the season. He has traveled everywhere looking for business ventures. He never goes to the same place twice and usually only stays one night at any of them. If no one knows you then you can't get hurt.
While looking for something to do he goes into a jewelry store and sees the most beautiful women he has ever come across. Jonathan is never at a loss for words till now. Angelica is the owner of the shop, very busy with orders and does not have time for a Handsome stranger. She has worked hard for recognition. She had a lot to overcome, she is black and on her own. Her own family can't understand why she didn't just stay in London and work for her brother who took over their father's shop when he died. She has a loving big family. Loves Christmas and all that goes with it.
At first it seems these two have nothing in common. But as they spend time together, we learn
more of Jonathan's past, why he travels and has no true home.
Angelica also has a past she keeps hidden. Will these two be able to overcome all and find a happy
ever after? Can they see past hurts and move on to what both really want? Will they wait till it is too late ?
This is a sweet loving story of two people with more in common then they think.
It is a clean story and any age could read and enjoy it.
Other great tale with the Cressmouth village and all its wonderful characters.
I do hope you give it a try all the books in the series can be read as standalone but so much
better read in order.
I received and ARC from the author and want to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am voluntarily giving it.
I loved, loved, loved this story! It was so nice to see a story with a strong independent woman that doesn't end up being filled with sex scenes and nothing much besides. This was a clean story told from the points of view of the gentleman without a home who was lonely and wandering the country, and the black female jeweler who was trying to make a name for herself whilst fighting against preconceived notions of her race and gender. Despite all this the story wasn't depressing, instead it was uplifting and heartwarming and one I'll be recommending to others.
Jonathan MacLean is on his way to Cressmouth to meet with the Duke of Nottingvale about investing in a business venture. Jonathan is a bit of a nomad, traveling around the country, but never staying anywhere long enough to lay down roots and he has a steadfast rule – he never visits the same place twice. He arrives to learn that the snow will certainly keep him in town longer than expected and will delay the arrival of the Duke and his business partner Calvin. Unable to just wait around for the snow to stop, he decides to venture out and meet the people of Cressmouth. He enters the jeweler’s shop and feels like he has been struck by lightning – the jeweler is the most stunning woman he has ever seen!
Angelica Parker is the jeweler in town, she came to Cressmouth seven years ago to make a name for herself. She was invited to set up shop by Mr. Marlowe and he made her an outrageous offer – he would provide her with rooms in the castle and a shop at no charge, but she must stay in Cressmouth for seven years – no exceptions – if she leaves, even for a day, the contract is void and she will owe an obscene amount of money, however, if she fulfills the contract, everything is hers, free and clear – this Christmas will be her seventh year and she is looking forward to travel – but she plans to stay in Cressmouth. Her family comes each year to visit her, but they don’t understand why Angelica agreed to the contract – they have a successful shop in London and think she should have married and stayed with them. Angelica longs to be acknowledged for her talent and knows that if she stayed in London – that would never happen. She is happy in Cressmouth, but still hasn’t achieved the recognition she dreams of. She has no idea how much her live will change when a handsome young man comes into her shop!
What a sweet novella this was! It is well written and chocked full of interesting historical facts regarding slavery in Regency-era Britain. Jonathan and Angelica are very complex characters and I am impressed by how well Ms. Ridley was able to flesh them out considering this is a novella. The story has a lot of emotion, some laughs, warmish love scenes, delightful secondary characters, compromise and a sweet HEA, complete with an epilogue. This book is the tenth book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title with no problems.
