GrowVeg is a solid book for beginner gardeners. Filled with ideas for creating your own garden space, whatever the size of your space or materials you have on hand, there is something for everyone in this book.

The author gives the fundamental basics that should have the reader growing their own fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in no time!

I especially appreciated all of the tips that show it doesn't need to be costly, and how to get the most bang for your buck. Gardening is so good for our health and environment, it's good to see someone highlighting that this is something accessible to everyone.

What a great little introduction to gardening. A beginners' guide to growing a garden, this book tells you everything you need to know about starting from seed, raised beds and how to build them, straw bale gardening, and what are the easiest plants to grow and how to do it. An excellent resource for those just starting out.

Accessible, inspiring book for beginning gardeners, full of beautiful photographs, intelligible instructions, and useful tips. I especially appreciated the range of clever, and attractive, options for smaller spaces and the recycled container suggestions. Definitely a book I will recommend to those of us who have been interested in vegetable gardening, but lacking confidence and/or know-how.

This is a great introduction to gardening. It includes tips for growing in different containers and has a great focus on using recycled materials. Throughout the book is information on different vegetables, fruit, and flowers with tips on the correct soil to use and ideal growing conditions as well as creative items to use as containers. I bookmarked a few pages that I will be using in the next couple of weeks as I start my own garden.

I taught a sustainable gardening class for many years. I was always looking for a good book to use as a text for my students. This book appears, on first glance, to be ideal for someone who wants to start growing vegetables. The gardening basics chapter contains the essential information without being overwhelming. Information is broken up into small sections and there is an abundance of beautiful (and appetizing) photos. A visual learner would love this book!

The second chapter is called "Dependable Favorites/" However, there initially seems to be more of a focus on planting schedule. That's fine, except that the part that describes planting the first garden (presumably the first things to plant in the spring) doesn't specifically state which veggies should go in first. In fact, the first illustration on the "first garden" section is of zucchini, which definitely is more of a warm season crop, not to be planted in early spring. If I were a new gardener, I would be confused as to what should go in early and what should wait til warmer temperatures.

There are some nice instructions for simple garden projects such as making a raised bed, assembling a worm bin, or growing a salad basket. Instructions are simple and nicely illustrated. And, the book has good basic instructions for growing each type of veggie, from commonly known ones to more unusual (e.g., cucamelon). I was particularly impressed with suggestions for recycling household items as containers for plants. One chapter, called "Nature's Helping Hand" seems to focus on growing wildflowers, but its relevance to the vegetable theme of the book is not evident in the chapter's introduction.

In summary, there is a lot of useful information inside this book. And, each tutorial is done concisely and with great illustrations. The improvement could come in the overall organization of the book. It seems as though sections are randomly assembled into chapters, rather than sticking with a theme. This might or might not be a problem for the new gardener, depending on their way of thinking. And, I have to admit, that even I (a gardener with over half a century of experience), even found the book intriguing enough to purchase a copy for my future reference. I'm particularly interested in the section about growing mushrooms in a flower pot

This book was just what I needed. I requested this book after a failed vegetable garden. So often I've read differing information and its not very user friendly when I'm actually trouble shooting. This book was easy to read, the right amount of information, and very practical. The timing of this book was perfect, as I get ready to try again with a vegetable garden. A great read I'll be referencing as spring gets going.

A great gardening book for new gardeners and those who want more details or support around specific issues. This book includes beautiful color photographs that provide step by step details. I am not a new gardener but I am a little rusty and plan to purchase this book for my personal collection.

Loved it! This book makes me so excited about growing a garden and makes it look simple. The book takes an in depth look at certain varieties from fruits, vegetables, and herbs that most people grow.

What did I like? Usually you just get one page but the author gives us a more in depth look. I loved the pictures and the diy pages that scanned the pages. A well rounded and organized book for your growing vegetable needs!

Would I recommend or buy? Yes to both! I would love a copy! I would recommend to anyone wanting more help starting to grow your own garden. Five stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review.

You know when you are looking for a beginner gardening book and seriously everything you find is advanced enough that you get frustrated and get up? I have definitely been there, but this book is not it. It truly is for beginners! Vanheems really simplifies gardening from growing seeds indoors in the spring to transplanting them in the garden and exactly out to do so. He also shows the reader how to build garden boxes. While these really appeal to me, he also shows a variety of other ways to plant gardens with detailed how tos, so their is something for everyone! Best of all, there are pictures for everything in a step by step manner. He includes his favorites to grow and how to do so with many tips and tricks along the way. I have read a ton of gardening books, but this one is definitely my favorite and definitely a stand out in how comprehensive it is and the number of clear steps and pictures.

Finally, a veggie gardening book that makes me feel like I can do it myself! Growing a huge patch sounds daunting so seeing options for salad and carrot baskets seems quite doable. Now I just need a print copy so I can start marking it up and making notes in the margins.

For Libraries: The simplistic approach will be of huge appeal to new gardeners. Both accessible and informative, I'm not certain I've seen a book that covers this array of topics with such a degree of ease.

GrowVeg The Beginner's Guide to Easy Vegetable Gardening by Benedict Vanheems is aimed at helping you to grow vegetables, whether you are a beginner, or a bit more advanced.

It has some project ideas in it, like growing vertically or a bug hotel, with great photos and information.  This is a good book if you are interested in learning, and one that could be returned to as you learned and practiced more.

GrowVeg The Beginner's Guide to Easy Vegetable Gardening  by Benedict Vanheems was published on 2nd March 2021, and is available on  Amazon .

I love Benedict Vanheems GrowVeg YouTube videos and this book’s prose has the same knowledgeable and friendly vibe. The text gives a good overview of important tips on vegetable gardening basics for beginners, such as soil needs, crops for warm and cool seasons, and growing details for frequently grown vegetables. But it also provides information beneficial to experienced gardeners, such as organic insect control, rooting stem cuttings, etc. The author includes a number of simple garden projects like repurposing household items for practical garden use that I think many gardeners will find helpful. All in all an enjoyable read with good information in a format that is informative but not textbook dry. The book does briefly promote the garden planner sold by GrowVeg at the end. I’ve used both the online subscription and old app formats and found both helpful, so I didn’t find this promotion offensive.

The e-book I reviewed was not in final format. Many pictures had not been finalized, but the pictures included were beautiful. On the downside, in a number of areas the text was scrambled mixing words from alternate sentences or headings, and some text colors (such as bright yellow) were not readable on an iPad using the Kindle app. Hopefully these errors will be corrected in the final electronic version.

There are a few helpful tips and a lot of open ended statements about when and where to plant. Lots of love shown for gardening in every page.

The chatty writing style makes this book an easy and fun read and would certainly encourage the reader to start vegetable gardening.
It briefly covers the basics of choosing a site, using pots, raised beds or a traditional garden, planting and watering. It then goes into a little more detail about growing specific vegetables such as carrots potatoes, lettuce etc. The list of 10 dependable favourites would be an excellent place for a beginner to start. Interesting projects include ideas such as making a salad basket, trash can potatoes, crate of herbs, teepee beans.
The first half of the book lived up to the comment at the beginning of the book viz. “over the coming chapters you will discover all the basics you need to get growing “ and the reader could get more details on specific growing issues from the excellent website. However, I found the second half somewhat random and distracting. It switches from vegetables to growing wild flower meadows, sweetpeas, then back to edible gardening. It felt as if the author was trying to cram in too much into one book, and in so doing lost the focus on the basics of growing vegetables.

This is a fantastic gardening book with everything that beginners need to know but also lots to please seasoned gardeners. It's full of fantastic photos and has projects, detailed information on how to grow all different crops, and lots more. One small note-- he says you can use any container to grow veggies as long as you can put dirt in it. Plant roots will pull up nutrients from the soil but can also draw out any toxins that are in your container or its coating. Watch out for things like lead-based finishes, non-foodsafe plastics, tires, etc.

All in all this was a fun and helpful read that has me already impatient for spring.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

The book starts slow with lots of broad statements but soon the author offers many practical beginner tips. I was impressed by the sections to make your own fertilizer and use hay bales for gardening, two suggeations I had not read in any other gardening books!
