"Delicates" by Brenna Thummler is a beautifully crafted graphic novel that continues the poignant story of the characters from "Sheets." This delightful sequel manages to surpass its predecessor in both storytelling and artistic prowess, making it a must-read for fans of young adult literature and graphic novels alike.
The story centers around Marjorie Glatt, a young girl who is still coming to terms with the loss of her mother, and her unexpected friendship with the ghostly inhabitants of the local laundromat. In "Delicates," Marjorie is back, and she's facing the ups and downs of adolescence, including friendship, self-discovery, and navigating the complexities of middle school. This time, the focus shifts towards Marjorie's interactions with her peers, particularly her new friend Eliza, who introduces her to the intriguing world of extracurricular activities, friendships, and the challenges that come with growing up.
One of the strengths of "Delicates" lies in its relatable characters and the way it explores the emotions and experiences of early adolescence. Brenna Thummler masterfully captures the essence of this stage in life, making readers of all ages empathize with Marjorie's struggles and triumphs. The characters are well-developed and multi-dimensional, and their growth throughout the story is both realistic and heartwarming.
Thummler's artwork is a visual treat. Her delicate and expressive illustrations bring the characters and their emotions to life. The muted color palette and subtle use of watercolors add a dreamlike quality to the narrative, perfectly complementing the story's themes of nostalgia, friendship, and the passage of time. The attention to detail in the illustrations, from the characters' expressions to the intricate backgrounds, enhances the overall reading experience.
The themes explored in "Delicates" are both universal and timely. Friendship, peer pressure, self-identity, and the importance of self-expression are all skillfully woven into the narrative. Thummler addresses these issues with sensitivity and authenticity, making them accessible to readers of all ages. It's a story that encourages empathy and understanding, making it an excellent choice for both young readers and adults.
In conclusion, "Delicates" is a remarkable graphic novel that surpasses its predecessor in terms of storytelling and artistry. Brenna Thummler's ability to capture the nuances of adolescence and the power of friendship is truly commendable. This is a graphic novel that will resonate with readers of all ages, offering a heartfelt and beautifully illustrated journey through the trials and triumphs of growing up. "Delicates" is a must-read, and it solidifies Brenna Thummler's place as a standout talent in the world of graphic novels.
Thanks for the arc Netgalley.
Delicates is a sequel to Sheets by Brenna Thummler.
I really enjoy the story, as their friendship is beautiful.
Thank you to #Netgalley and #OniBooks for access to this arc in return for an honest review.
The illustrations are beautiful throughout the story. Who knew a simple sheet ghost could evoke such an empathetic feeling? Wendell is a great character and continues to experience more with Marjorie as they move on to new experiences.
I enjoyed Delicates even more than Sheets. Charming without being whimsical.
This graphic novel is the sequel to Sheets. It's about friendship and trying to fit in and being different.. The illustrations are beautifully done. I'll have to look for Lights next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. Interesting sequel to Ghosts. Good for a younger audience exploring important themes and topics. I really like the art and the colours.
This whole series, Sheets, Delicates, and Lights are so beautiful, both in story and in illustration. It's such a fun idea for a way to explain and deal with death, in a way that doesn't make it seem scary or upsetting. Love it.

Wowza! This was so beautifully illustrated and handled such a heavy topic brilliantly.
I got all the feels, and given that I have been hearing about so many kids that I know personally getting bullied badly breaks my heart.
I was bullied by some girls in school, one of whom followed me from primary school to secondary school and was...still is...a thorn in my side if you will.. till today, she still harbours ridiculous hatred for me, and god alone knows why.
I am so glad that this was dealt with delicately yet in sych a realitic, raw way.
Kudos to @brennathummler ~ fabulous job!
“Delicates” is the second installment in the "Sheets" series. Much like the first book, this one is also simply a heartwarming, although heavy, read. I do have to say that I truly began to appreciated the illustrations in this specific book, because I realize just how much they help to tell the story. I might even say that this story could be told by the illustrations alone!!!
Thank you to @netgalley and @onipress for providing me with the eARCs in exchange for an honest review!
Delicates was another brilliant graphic novel from Brenna Thummler. It was so much fun going back to Marjorie's story and meeting some the other characters. I really enjoyed this story, and the illustrations are so much fun. I'm really looking forward to reading the next one.
thank you NetGallery for sending me a digital copy
I liked Delicates so so much I actually cried a bit. I think is definitely a lot better than Sheets. The art style improved and I loved all Marjorie new outfits. I loved how the author managed to keep the two colors scenes in this book too.
Eliza's character and storyline was really touching and added a significance that Sheets lacked.
IT'S SO GOOODDDDD
MUCH BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS BOOK!!!!
It captured perfectly the life of a teenager trying to navigate their life. It felt natural and relatable. It also revolved around racism, bullying, and why being an enabler is a no NO. It showed how helpful and precious family and friendship is.
I love this one.
And THE ART OMGGGG🥺💗💗💗
That color, that style, perfect!!!!!
Delicates was a great follow-up to Sheets. There was so much character development throughout! Definitely had a bit of a darker tone than the first volume which I personally prefer. Compared to Sheets, it really pulls you even deeper into the story.
However the storyline felt as though the ghosts are just convenient plot devices and they could technically be removed with no issue. I wish the ghost characters were more embedded in the story.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and Brenna Thummler for the honor of reading this book! This graphic novel is the second book in the Sheets series. The book take place a little after the first novel ends. I enjoyed reading this book alot and see how our characters continue to grow and change. The artwork was just as pretty as the first book. I felt like the book flowed perfectly and I had a hard time of putting the book down. I read this all in one sitting. The story had a great story line which talked about some hard topics that teens face growing up such as bullying, suicide thoughts, death, and self discovery. This is a book that tugs at yiur heart strings and leaving you wanting more. I look forward to reading more in this series with the 3rd book coming out!
Delicates is the second graphic novel in the Sheets trilogy, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first installment!
While Marjorie and Wendell still have a prominent role in this story, we also get introduced to Eliza, a photographer who wants to prove to the world that ghosts exist.
While Marjorie struggles with fitting into her new friend group and juggling her social life with Wendell the friendly ghost, Eliza spends most of her time in the school’s darkroom.
Where grief was the main aspect of the first novel, Delicates touches more on mental struggles that result from being bullied. And in my opinion it did so in a very heartbreaking but realistic way.
Just as always, the drawings were absolutely gorgeous, and while I would recommend this book to everyone, please make sure you check the trigger warnings.
Delicates was a great follow-up to Sheets. Marjorie struggles with staying true to herself while having friends for the first time in middle school. I really enjoyed the ending resolution with (spoiler and content warning) Eliza's suicidal thoughts. I found the way Delicates told her story to be tasteful, respectful, and age-appropriate. It was something hinted at earlier on that I am happy came back around and wasn't just floating out as an unexplored idea.
This story was less of Wendell and more of Marjorie and middle school issues, I wish there was less focus on the school drama. The storyline felt as though the ghosts are just convenient plot devices and they could technically be removed with no issue. I wish the ghost characters were more embedded in the story.
Delicates is the wonderful sequel to Sheets and the story goes even deeper in this one, literally touching on quite delicate topics. The artwork is as beautiful as in the first book and the characters get even more complex the better we get to know them. Can‘t wait to read the final volume.
I lived that although it was a quick read with it being a graphic novel there was such a good message in the story. It was written perfectly and the illustrations were gorgeous. I did not think I would enjoy the story as much as I did and found myself wanting a little sheet ghost buddy!
Beautiful follow up to Sheets! Very cute & adorable while dealing with more sophisticated topics. Worth reading, just to experience the artwork.
First things first; the art in Delicates is just as beautiful as in Sheets; if not even prettier., it is absolutely wonderful. These pages are filled with the most beautiful colours and remain captivating; the entire way through.
The story in itself was really interesting as well. There is a lot of background in it; and the emotions are complex. I did find that in moments, there was not enough plot/happenings to support the pictures included.
Delicates by Brenna Thummler is a great sequel and I actually enjoyed it more than Sheets!
The art is as amazing as in the first one with a lot of pink and purple colors, but the story goes deeper with explorations of bullying and mental health. There are also the themes of loss and responsibility that continue from the first novel, as well as a more in-depth exploration of friendship and right vs wrong.
Please read the trigger warnings as there are mentions of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Thummler did an excellent job on discussing not only the effects bullying has but also how inaction and not taking a stand against bullying can be as bad.
