It is no secret that I am quite the fan of Katie Fforde, so of course when this book popped up I simply couldn't resist!.
One thing you can always expect from Katie Fforde, is that she will deliver a captivating story that you fall in love with immediately. The characters, the setting, the perfectly paced storyline.... I adored everything about this book.
A true Katie Fforde book, if you’ve ever read any of her previous works you know you’re in for a good read.
I love a Katie Fforde novel and this one was no different, albeit not her usual stuff. I enjoyed all the characters and I loved David especially. Keep writing Katie, and I'll keep reading!
Okay, let's start with the positives. I liked Lizzie; she and her best friends Meg and Alexandra were fun. However, Lizzie did seem to lose her spark as the story went on. Alexandra was the most interesting, an heiress to a fortune but living within moderate means and hunting for antiques in her spare time. Meg was learning to cook so she could get a job catering to help support her mother.
The leading man Hugo however was a bit flat. He was nice enough but never really decisive or able to stand up for himself until it was nearly too late.
It started out as a good story, the story of meeting friends and enjoying London life, set in the 1960s it was a nostalgic reminder of how young girls embraced the fashions and lifestyles of the era, whilst trying to fit into a society that suited their parents. However, when we bring in the accidental pregnancy storyline, especially in this era, the whole thing fell flat for me. I hate the accidental pregnancy trope, I find it can ruin an otherwise perfectly good story.
The title is also misleading as the wedding takes place right at the end and finishes as the bride walks down the aisle, so not even a full wedding to be seen.
I would love to be able to write a fuller review for this book, especially as I've been putting it off, but I can't drum up the enthusiasm for this one, a pity as I've previously enjoyed Katie Fforde's work.
Set in London in 1963, Lizzie has moved from the home counties to study on a cookery course to help her learn to be a good wife. I know that most women would cringe about this but this was of the time. Also a time of change where the sexual revolution is about to explode and wear women are becoming braver in self and making own choices.
Lizzie is discovering herself and loving London sharing a house with two girls she met on the course and a man who is hiding his sexuality as it is pre legalisation.
Lizzie has also met a man, not only is he engaged to the bossy Electra, he is also from the upper class and Lizzie has not ingratiated herself to his father with hr short hemline or her swinging short haircut,
There are echo's of this book and A Wedding in Provence and initially felt it was a bit 'samey' but the penny dropped that the two books are connected and made it just lovely.
Despite the books being connected, each can be read as a standalone. They are well written, warm, comforting and great escapism and most of all unforgivably romantic.
Ideal for readers of women's fiction and romance.

A solid nice healthy romance book from Katie Fforde I love these books as they are just heart warming
Sadly, the Katie Fforde magic wasn't there in this one... There's always something out-of-this-world about her characters which make them engaging and like it's impossible to not know what's going to happen to them. But this spark was missing in this book, and it just felt like a whole lot was missing. It just never clicked into something enjoyable for me, unfortunately
As always, an amazing book from katie. A book to give you all the feels, wraps you up in its blanket and doesn’t let go! Katie has been a firm favourite for a long time, and this just solidifies why!
This title was a bit of a departure for me, as I don't normally read books set in this period, although I've loved Katie Fforde titles in the past. Once I got used to the language and the social norms of the time, it really grabbed me and I was hooked. Really looking forward to reading the next one!
Have enjoyed this author's books in the past but I struggled with this one. Found it a little bit twee and rather irritating to be honest. A bit far-fetched.
I’m afraid this book wasn’t for me. It started off quite well, a young girl moving to London in the 1960’s, doing what was expected of females back then. Enrolling in a cookery class, she meets and makes friends with other girls who they quickly form a great friendship, which was great.
The part I couldn’t get on board with is how her actions lead her to get the life that she does, I couldn’t agree with it morally.
A gorgeous book about amazing friendships, true love and family issues.
I love Katie FFordes books and this one was certainly no exception. Wonderful!
Another gorgeous feel good romance from Katie Fforde. Great characters and so much detail made it very evocative of the 1960s in which it was set, and I should know as I was there although I was decidedly working class! Loved the reference to Green Shield Stamps!
Katie fforde has An amazing writing style that not only tells an amazing story in real life events but it keeps you hooked from page one and you don't want to stop until you've reached the end.
This story is no different and she tells the story of Lizzie and it has to be one of my favourite books of Katie's and and I am fairly sure I have read them all!
Another triumph from the fantastic Katie Fforde. I liked the historical setting, an interesting twist on Katie's usual books. I will be recommending this one for sure.
I am a big fan of Katie Fforde and this book didn't disappoint!
I loved the setting and the characters and would highly recommend it - pure escapism
Great read from Katie, set on a cookery course with diverse characters, many turn of events which lead to unexpected romance. The characters are comical and make you feel you are involved in the scenes. A lovey feel good holiday read
I am a huge fan of Katie Fforde and I loved this book. I love her writing style and particularly enjoyed the 1960's setting.
A lovely light-hearted read with strong characters who really captivated my heart and an engaging plot. Definitely worth a read
This is the first book I've read by Katie Fforde, I really enjoyed it. although it's not my usual type of read. The 1960s London setting is interesting from a social history point of view, with the young female characters trying to find a life for themselves away from the family home for the first time. I also appreciated the descriptions of the houses, fashion and gardens. It was a real stress buster for me.
This us the first in a series of books following a group of friends in 1960s London. Lizzie, Maggie and Alexandra meet at a culinary school. Lizzie has been enrolled by her parents who feel she needs to learn how to be a good housewife to support her future husband whom she has yet yo meet! Mixing with debutante killing time between parties and others on the course developing skills for future careers, Lizzie tries to find her niche.
As Lizzie discovers a new founded freedom she moves into Alexandra's crumbling home in Belgravia. As she starts to enjoy swinging London, she meets a range of men some gems, some frogs but wants to meet her Prince.
An enjoyable escapist read !
