I have reviewed this book as part of my July Reading Wrap Up on my YouTube channel https://youtu.be/IM3wpFADf9g
I thought that this book was ok. I really wanted to love it and tried it out in a number of formats including the audiobook and I just couldnt sink into it.
Three best friends plan to end their relationship problems. Jem’s life is on track she just needs to get rid of her ex. Meagan has a successful business but us now ready for a relationship. Similar has had her heart broken again. The women decide to play the live game but making their own rules. A series of dates with a range of men provided some chuckles. The narrative shifts between each woman’s perspective. Funny, uplifting, diverse debut novel.
There was lots of funny material here and generally speaking I liked the story but it was altogether too long. At one point intending to skip just a little I accidentally pushed the slider on my phone too far and went from 62% to 89% completed. I was about to go back a little, when I decided to read and realise that nothing had actually happened. Literally nothing. I was still waiting for two of the protagonists to find out what the other one had done 20% of the book earlier! Nothing of significance had changed.
So, ultimately it could’ve been trimmed quite a lot without losing anything
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
I love the premise of this novel, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me in practice so I have to officially DNF this one.
I reaaly liked this one, I found it funny and witty. i think from reading other reviews it seems to be a bit hit or miss but for me it hit the spot. The characters are really great and it was good to see black women in the main roles.
This didn't work for me. It wasn't what I expected from the synopsis.
It took 25% to get to the dating game part and by then we had already met the very obvious end game love interest for Jemima.
I also felt it was too obvious where each of the girls would end up at the end.
The pact felt too slow at the beginning. I felt the plot was less about the dating game itself, which I was actually interested in, and more about the girls personal dramas. Which I wasn't interested in. The book just didn't spend enough time on the dating game part and the fun stories that could have come from it. Instead it went in a direction of showing how horrible the girls were and how they all needed to work on themselves.
The girls were all so unlikeable. It didn't help that there was no real character growth until the last chapter. I didn't care if they all ended up single.
The only character I liked was Chance. He deserved better.
Overall this was underwhelming.
Hugely enjoyable!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this novel in exchange for my feedback.
One of my faves this year - made me laugh out loud and also made me cry. This was just what I needed to get me through Lockdown #3
this was an enjoyable read. I liked reading about the lives of these young women - how they supported one another and how they overcame tensions and difficulties within their friendship group. As a 50 something year old, i did feel I wasn't quite the target market but the plot was fun and original.
This was such a fun, captivating book that I wizzed through. Newly single I found this was just what I needed right now.
They girls and their friendship reminded me of me and my friends and the way they was so honest was great. I loved the laughs, arguments, miss haps, and the dates.
This was hilarious and I couldn’t put it down.
I loved the one liners and will read more by this author.
This was a fun read, with good character development.
I'd recommend for anyone looking for a quick, easy read with a light-hearted feel and plenty of fun.
This wasn't for me. I was really looking forward to having some laugh out loud moments but sadly found this a bit boring. Unfortunately not for me.
Meagan, Simi and Jemima are the closest of friends. After having relationships that haven't worked out , they decide to embark on a new game. They are going to ask men out for each other in the hope of helping each other to find what they are really looking for. What could possibly go wrong? I have given this book 3 stars because I really didn't warm to any of the 3 main characters, so it was a bit of a struggle to finish it. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
A lovely friendship-based romance novel, a nice bit of escapism.
Really interesting characters and story basis too :)
Great characters with a great mix of personalities. A light hearted fun rad that kept me engrossed. Recommended.
A nice light-hearted read, perfect easy read book.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Asking For A Friend’ is the debut novel by Andi Osho.
Forty-something Jemima’s life is on track – well, sort of, she just need to bat her niggly ex away for good.Twenty-something Meagan is in the midst of her five-phase plan and is nearly ready for phase three: a relationship. While thirty-something Simi has had more it’s not yous than any I dos. These best friends decide it’s time to ditch the dating apps and play the love game by their own rules. They’re going to ask people out in real life…but only for each other. What could possibly go wrong?
If you’re looking for a book filled with sass and wit, then look no further as Andi’s debut novel delivers this plus much more.
The story is about about 3 best friends called Jemima, Simi and Meagan who are all at major turning points in their lives. Jemima is struggling with the third book in her mystery story, her editor wants romance but that area in Jemima’s life is obsolete, but once returning from America she meets Chance, a handsome Australian who loves her books. Simi is heartbroken after another failed relationship and Jemima and Meagan is there to pick up the pieces whilst recovering from heartbreak, Simi is trying to establish her acting career with the help of her best friend and agent, Meagan but like her love life is failing miserably. Meanwhile Meagan is enjoying having a casual relationship with Todd and avoiding any mention of a serious relationship. On a night out, the women decide that they are going to partners for each other and so starts the drama of dates, new beginnings and discovery about their friendship.
I really enjoyed this book, it’s fun, witty and packed with attitude that made for really delightful reading. The women are great characters with a great mix of personalities that really highlighted the dynamics of female relationships. I found myself really engaging with Jemima, as an aspiring author, I was drawn to her writing and the dilemma of finding stories for her characters, whereas Meagan was feisty with a real attitude that really made me admire her honesty. All characters had relatable traits, I even found myself sympathising with Simi and her struggles with relationship.
‘Asking For A Friend’ is a cleverly written and a fun packed story exploring the complexities of female relationship that made for witty and loud out reading.
You can buy ‘Asking For A Friend’ from Amazon and will be available to buy from good bookshops
I really enjoyed this book. It had great characters and a really enjoyable story that kept me engrossed throughout. Definitely worth a read.
I absolutely loved this one. It was so funny and at the same time serious. It showcases female friendships, it tackles some serious issues about race and being a young black woman trying to make it for herself and also about finding love in today's society. Andi Osho is such a funny, witty writer, I will definitely be recommending this book to anyone who's after a beautiful story about the empowerment of women and love a book about female friendships.
