The story is told from Alice’s point of view. She’s just moved in with her boyfriend, Leo into a gated community in the centre of London. She thinks that all of her dreams are being realised and that they can begin their future together. However, she doesn’t realise that there are secrets everywhere in this new community, starting with her own boyfriend. He’s purchased a property where a woman was murdered in her bedroom. Alice struggles to believe the stories her neighbours tell her about the murder and she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth.
This book was so tense and eventful that I was gripped from the first page. I could have finished it in one sitting and ended up taking the book into work to read on my lunch break because I needed to know what happened next! If there’s one thing you need to know about B. A. Paris, it’s that her writing will keep you on tenterhooks, I was kept right at the edge of my seat!
With a cast of interesting characters and a plot that will keep you guessing until the very end, this is a book you don’t want to miss out on.
This was a great thriller from the outset. It started with a couple moving into a house in a gated community. The girl, Alice, has no idea that a murder took place there, least of all in her new house. The book was very descriptive of all the characters and gave them all great depth. There were plenty of twists and turns thought the story and certainly kept me entertained. The ending was not what I assumed it would be, it was far better.
BA Paris writes page turning novels and The Therapist is another of those - some readers may find the main character somewhat obsessive as she sets about finding out what happened to the previous resident of the house who was killed by her husband.- Alice comes to suspect foul play and as she gets to know other residents in The Circle - the gated London community in which she lives. - she suspects all of her neighbours in turn. Strange happenings occur in the house and she becomes fearful for her own life and no longer knows who to trust. I was fully engaged in this story despite Alice's behaviour being obsessive and her thoughts a bit repetitive, overall it was a solid three stars.
This was a book that I couldn't put down. I rarely read in the daytime, but I had to make an exception for this book. You could see why Alice didn't know who to believe - I didn't know who to believe. I thought the ending was clever too.
Alice and Leo move to a house in a gated community in a fashionable part of London. It is everything they want but Alice discovers that Leo has omitted to tell her that the house has a past. Alice becomes obsessed with what has happened there and is determined to discover the truth. However her questions raise eyebrows and alienate her with the friends she thought she was making with her new neighbours. She is convinced that people are hiding what really occurred and her investigations lead her into dangerous territory.
I really enjoyed this fast moving thriller which had me hooked. Couldn’t put it down!
Another page turning psychological thriller from BA Paris who never disappoints me with her writing.
Alice and Leo move into a new house in The Circle and all theirs dreams appear to be fulfilled. The circle consists of a community of exclusive houses and Alice is eager to meet her new neighbours but is disturbed when she discovers their home holds a terrible secret. The previous owner Nina who was a therapist was murdered in the house and Alice soon becomes obsesses with finding out more of what happened. The neighbours appear to be less interested in raking over this terrible time and Alice starts to suspect secrets are being hidden and the real killer is still at large.
I found this an exciting read and finished it almost in one sitting, interesting characters and lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. For once I guessed right but had lots of fun getting to the answer.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and HQ for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Having read BA Paris' previous novels I requested this on that reason alone.
I got into the story really quickly and I thought it would be a really good tale. However, Alice's continuous questions, interference and even establishing a trusting relationship with one the characters ( no spoiler intended) got irritating. Also, she took upon herself to solve the mystery to extent she did although the back story went some way to explain this, it did seem excessive.
Unfortunately I did suss out the ending as well.
Overall a passable psychological thriller but a disappointment considering the author's previous work
just the very idea of living in a house in " the circle" sets my teeth on edge- so perfect, so social, so not what it seems!
Alice finds out that her new house comes with a secret and the secret soon becomes an obsession which almost becomes her undoing.
Well paced, well written, creepy enough to have you shouting out loud at Alice!
read previous novels by B A Paris, I was keen to read the latest offering. The Therapist didn’t disappoint, it had an edge to it that kept me involved.
Alice and her boyfriend Leo move into their first house together after having a long-distance relationship for a while. Leo works away from home most of the time leaving Alice alone in the house and getting to know her new neighbours. What Alice didn’t know when she moved into the house was that the previous occupant had been murdered there.
When Alice finds out she starts to fray at the edges and questions Leo’s intentions and if she really knows him.
I enjoyed the storyline and totally believed that there was something not quite right with Leo. I won’t like being home alone myself after reading this.
I'm 25% into this kindle download so thought I'd jot down a few notes. I'm familiar with this author having tried one of her earlier books “The Breakdown”, and looking back at that review, I got no further than 25% with that one. Is there a pattern here? I hesitate to use the word “thriller” because this is anything but, however they do seem to appeal to some readers judging from accompanying blurb:
“Tense and compulsive” says Louise Candish, who apparently “gobbled it up in two sittings” - what a pleasant picture that presents.
‘A delicious web of lies. Be prepared for your head to spin and your fingers to fly!’ declares Jane Corry
This tale of woe concerns Alice who is persuaded by her partner Leo, to leave her cosy cottage in the country for life in London. He buys a large house in an exclusive enclave near Finsbury Park - a huge house, far too big for two of them but that's beside the point. This gated community consists of a group of twelve houses, called The Circle. Alice works from home, which doesn't help with her feelings of loneliness, so she is just dying to make friends and against Leo's wishes, invites them all the neighbours a drinks gathering – not a party explains Alice – to which several of them attend. It transpires than one of the guests is not who she thinks he is. He's an Imposter - cue the creepy music.....
But who is he? No-one knows, but then – ta dah – he turns up at Alice's doorstep claiming to be a private detective investigating a murder which took place in that very house. Would you believe it! Now why, exactly, would a private investigator – indeed an investigator of any kind, turn up at Alice's door expecting to glean any information from a new resident?
Why does Leo react so badly when he learns of Alice's invitation?
Why didn't he tell her the history of the house?
Why is he such a plonker?
Why is Alice such a wimp?
So many questions, and I'm afraid they'll just have to remain that way for me, because having now read to 29%, I have reached the point where I would rather stick knitting needles in my eyes than read any more of this. Will I attempt anything else by this author? Find me my knitting needles...
I havent read anything by B A Paris before however have been recommended her works on multiple occasions.
The Therapist is a relatively light thriller and I enjoyed reading it, however, I am not sure that it lives up to the hype. I found a lot of the book to concern Alice's daily routine and it only seemed to pick up pace in the last 25%.
The circle is an exclusive gated community in North London. After Alice moves here with her partner Leo, she is keen to make friends in the neighbourhood, and is completely unaware of the terrible tragedy that has previously taken place in her house: the previous resident, the ‘therapist, referred to in the novel’s title, was killed here, presumably by her husband.
This novel has all the hallmarks of a compelling mystery: a community full of enigmatic characters who all keep secrets, a slice of twenty-first century London, and a believable protagonist with issues of her own. Whereas other books in this genre set the scene briefly before an explosive plot takes off, however, this novel meanders through protagonist Alice’s daily routines and her repeated attempts to strike up conversations. The plot does intensify, and the pace picks up, but not until the second half of the novel. This is still an intriguing, interesting read, but you have to be prepared to stick with the storyline for quite a while before it becomes a proper mystery. I would like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for this honest and unbiased review, and I look forward to seeing what B.A. Paris publishes next.
I really enjoyed this book and cannot recommend it highly enough. I had every man and his dog down for committing the murder of Nina. The book kept me guessing almost to the end and then I was surprised who it was. The book is set in a gated community called The Circle and it all revolves around the murder of one of the residents. Leo and Alice met a year or so ago and decide to buy a house together to stop the commute. Leo had a flat in London but was working in Birmingham and Alice had a cottage in Harlestone. London was to be there base and it all goes dramatically wrong once they move into the gated community. I could so easily give the story away as I could continue with the story as I enjoyed it so much but am going to stop here and say read it, you will enjoy the book immensely. Thank you to the author for a great book
A real page turner from B A Paris with excellent plot and characterisation on the whole, but a little obvious at times, almost as if readers need to be led in the right direction rather than working out for themselves. Having said that, it did have me engrossed from start to finish and there was little clue as to the outcome until it was almost revealed.
Alice is a needy soul, having lost her family in a car crash, when she moves to a gated community in an affluent part of London with her recently acquired partner. She is not as easily accepted there as she had hoped to be and the reasons become clear as the plot evolves - you won’t find any spoilers here!
Full of darkness, suspense and suspicion this book will have you on the edge of your seat. I was absolutely glued to it.
I’ve read a couple of B. A. Paris thrillers and she is great at weaving incredibly dark and sometimes heartbreaking stories. So I was delighted when I was approved for her latest.
Alice and Leo move into a beautiful house in The Circle, an exclusive secure community in central London. While most of their neighbours appear friendly and welcoming, there are a couple of Circle residents who seem a little wary of their arrival. Then Alice learns of the horrific events that took place in the house two years before and she becomes desperate to find out what really happened. But no one seems to want to talk about it…
The Circle appears to be a very safe, aspirational area. The houses are stunning and modern and the inhabitants are wealthy, successful people. However, while a secure gated community may have all the hallmarks of safety, it also possesses a certain level of claustrophobia. No one can get in but that also means that potentially no one can get out, right?
Alice does her best to integrate into life in The Circle but as might be expected by anyone who has tried to fit into a tight-knit group of women, she experiences a few hiccups. Tamsin, a close friend of Nina who previously lived in Alice and Leo’s house, seems to take an instant dislike to her. When the history of the house transpires, this becomes a little more understandable but I still thought Tamsin was behaving highly suspiciously right until the very end.
Alice and Leo’s relationship is relatively new. They haven’t even been together for two years when they move into The Circle and have only previously spent weekends together. It’s made clear that they don’t really know each other very well, which of course is the ideal setup for secrets to come out. The red flags against Leo kept appearing and I was willing Alice to get away from him and the house. However in the final third of the book, I began to think that perhaps he wasn’t as guilty as I’d previously imagined.
I certainly suspected almost every single character of some level of bad deed at some point. As a seasoned thriller reader, I tried to steer my thought process away from the seemingly obvious culprits -because it’s never them. But of course, that only left characters who I simply couldn’t believe was so evil. To say I went on a real journey while trying to figure out the mystery is an understatement and I still didn’t see the truth until right before it all unravelled. That’s what makes a fantastically thrilling read!
I can’t talk too much about the plot or dramatic, pulse-racing ending because I’d undoubtedly stumble across spoilers. The Therapist is a compulsive page-turner with a tragic tinge and plenty of delicious dark mystery. You may have to suspend your disbelief in places but anyone who loves these kinds of novels knows to do that. B. A. Paris’ books are perfect for getting truly lost in and I think we all need something like that right now.
This book is brilliant, so many twists and turns! Any book that can make your hands sweat and your heart race is well worth a read! I definitely didn’t see the ending coming, I love this author her books never disappoint.
This book is a real page turner! Just about everyone comes under suspicion at some point, as Alice tries to find out who killed the previous owner of the house she’s moved into. I found some parts of the story stretched credibility, so only 4 stars. However, this did not stop me thoroughly enjoying it.
Murder mystery set in a secure residential setting - similar feel to Harlen Corben’s safe. An enjoyable read but not much of a stretch.
The fab new title from B.A Paris. Loved how you never really knew what was going to happen next and what was real or not.
A great read that keep me engrossed all the way through.
