I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Another great book from one of my favorite authors. Highly recommend to friends and family.
This wasn't my favorite shifter book I've read but it wasn't the worst either. It held my attention well enough and was enjoyable to read. That being said I think the romance portion was a bit meh. Not my favorite written romance but just okay.
Thank you netgalley for the ARC
A light and enjoyable read, it wasn’t the best shifter book I’ve read, but it was enough to hold my attention and entertain me, but the chemistry was lacking and story a bit chaotic
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
I really enjoyed this book!! It covers just about everything a paranormal book fan would like; shifters, demons vs. angels, with a little ghost action thrown in. The animal attraction between Luc and Skye roared off the page. ;) I really think that there was a lot mentioned in the book that could grow into a series.

I know this is an ARC, so there are likely to be edits, but this was clearly written in one perspective and then overhauled at some point, because the perspective reverts from time to time as if someone missed it. The story was an interesting take on shifters, that they are demons essentially who live to corrupt, but the characters were one-dimensional, and I couldn't find it in my cold black heart to care about any of them. The plot was eh. It wasn't super riveting, pretty predictable.
There is obviously romance in this book, but it was lackluster. There was one sex scene, and it was meh. I tend to know that a romance is going to be disappointing when I read something like "Rather than answering her questions, he reached out and slid a palm along her cheek. The touch seared her, reminding her of the time she'd inadvertently touched a live wire." on page 8. This is a lazy way for writers to establish a relationship without having to put in any work to show it happening. They end up together, in love, no matter how mundane their interactions in the book and how unbelievable it all is. There is no suspense and no anticipation. Wholly underwhelming.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I first want to say if you LOVE paranormal romance with mystery, intrigue and suspense, you MUST read this. Second, have a NEW box of tissues ready for the tears! Or it may be just that I'm a softie.
Shade and Skye Cross are twins. They share an unusual connection plus he can read the thoughts of people, she can read the thoughts of animals. Shade is a homicide detective with the Chicago police and she is an animal rescuer. She is at a dogfighting ring waiting for the police to descend to shut it down before she can look after the animals. Her brother comes across her before the raid takes place. He tells her to stay back and gives her a sea glass necklace and tells her to never take it off. Skye is puzzled as to why her brother would attach himself to the raid? Where is his partner, Ethan?
After the raid, Skye chases after a wounded coyote. Instead of finding a coyote, she finds herself facing down three predators! She can even read their thoughts. Normally she converses with animals through pictures. She senses another presence, it is a striking man who commands the animals to leave and much to Skye's amazement, they do!
Skye will come across Luc's path several times. Luc is the illegitimate son of a human woman and the head of the Kindred. Luc walks a fine line between both worlds. He is intrigued by Skye's ability to resist his attempts to erase her memory of him and her ability to hear his thoughts. Who is or really what is Skye?
This isn't the normal paranormal romance. I was glued to my e-reader to figure out who was behind the fighting ring and how it could be stopped! I adored the multiple POV format. There were several POVs other than the two main protagonists. I LOVED that. I was really able to connect to the story as well as the characters that way. The Kindred part of the story was a little on the fantasy side, which I don't read. My poor brain just doesn't comprehend it. But with this story, I was able to fully imagine the story just like I would a movie.
There were some sexy scenes that really just lead up to and then just highly glossed over details before fading away. I would highly recommend this to anyone OVER the age of 18 to read this paranormal romance!
The concept of the Kindred Souls is new to me. It is an intriguing paranormal world building with characters who have very interesting and frightening skills. There’s romance and mystery a plenty. There’s also angst and sadness that will break your heart. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Didn't really like this book. It wasn't for me. It involved fighting of shifters as animals and I don't like any animals being injured shifters or not.
This was a first time author for me and I requested this ARC because it sounded interesting in the summary. Without knowing anything else - about the author or any previous books - I was excited to get started. The book did however, take a while for me to be able to get in to it and I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in the story. The world building was almost non existent and the setting regarding the magic universe just got more and more confusing. So Skye and her brother are twins, but they react to animals differently? Or could her brother hear peoples thoughts as well as animals? And he dies, but he doesn't? And Skye's abilities change...why? Did they never question things before? It takes a book to give her information?
Also, this style of shifter was so different from the norm or from regular cannon that it took a while for me to understand the dynamics. There is a shifter death at the very beginning and it is unclear why the book was making it sound like she was murdered. They put two shifters in a ring for a fight to the death, but the shifter in question was a big cat - a panther I think. Why would she not have big cat instincts (predator instincts) to be able to fight naturally? She wouldn't have had to win, but she should have been able to put up a fight instinctively being a predator. Right? It was things like that that began to build and build in my mind and just kept the story from coalescing for me.
And Luc...what in the world was going on with him? These are things that happened very closely to the beginning of the book and started becoming more and more frustrating in the fact that instead of getting answers, I just kept having questions. And worse, sometimes the answers seemed to be conflicting something previously either stated or implied.
I really do not want to be too negative, because I felt like there was so much potential with this premise. I just think the author wasn't really sure where she wanted to go with this. To me, it just felt like it was all over the place. I LOVE to read and usually can finish most books in a couple of hours. This book took me DAYS. That only happens when I keep finding reasons to put it down, or to move onto something else. I actually read two other books before I finished this one. After I finished this book, I went to Goodreads and saw that PR has many books out. I think I will try another book from another series. You never know, maybe it was just me - or maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind at this particular time. I will definitely see if I can try again .....like I said before, the premise was interesting and had so much potential.
This book started with an interesting premise. Skye has the ability to communicate and understand animals by mentally sharing images. That is unusual so I wanted to read this book. However Skye’s ability is barely touched on and when she suddenly can hear shifters thoughts, she hardly communicates with animals at all anymore. That was disappointing. This could have been an interesting story about the Kindred, the Nephilim and Noah’s Ark. The Kindred, having to give up their souls for immortality and must corrupt others to borrow souls in order to feel human could have been interesting but...the explanation is just not there. Also, It’s difficult to understand where Skye and her brother get their powers. She is constantly asked, “what are you?” but we never get an inkling of what she is. She finds the Book of Powers but barely reads it. What exactly is her power? What is Skye and Spade’s big picture mission? We never find out. In this book, they are trying to stop some illegal dog fights that end up with shifters being killed. Spade who is Skye’s brother is a policeman so it’s understandable that he’d pursue the illegal dog fighting ring. Skye is there to protect the animals but in what capacity? She owns a pet store with her best friend. I think the author left out too much of the world building and power structure for this book for it to be comprehendible. Yes, it’s good vs. evil but that’s about all I understood. Luc’s family is a crime family with a casino boat that includes a brothel. The family members are mostly unlikeable. The romance between Luc and Skye is a bit ho-hum for me. Luc is usually an ass to Skye and she is sassy to him but when they are near each other they are electrified, yawn. Overall, I wanted to like this story but there was too much left out of it for me to enjoy it. I will probably not read the next book in this series. Another irritating aspect is the pronouns are messed up throughout the book. I’m sure the mistakes will be caught in the editing stage but it was annoying throughout the story. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was a fun and entertaining story to read, it made for a fun read to pass a lazy weekend off work with!
This one was a hard one for me. I wanted to like this story a lot but it was such a struggle. I felt like their was so many missing pieces and parts of the story that if the writer had included it would have made the characters better or make you understand the story better. A lot of made up words or descriptions that it would have helped if they were explained. I know that their is a second story coming in the series but I don't believe I will read it.
This book is about Animal lover and rescuer, Skye Cross. She grew up able to see animals thoughts, which they shared with pictures. Then things changed and discovered that they could now speak to her with words, Then her world takes another odd turn when she discovers that shifters are real and known as Kindred. Twists and turns lead her to Luc Lazare, a man whose is Half-human, half-Kindred. They both need to know who is beyond the shifter fight ring. As they work together they begin falling for each other. The romance in this book was good, but the world building kind of dragged the story down. It was still an enjoyable read, but I wish that the world building had not taken as long. I will be picking up the next book in the series since the world creation is complete.
This is the first book I've read from Patricia Rosemoor and I enjoyed immensely.. The story was so original from any other shifter novel I've read that I had a hard time putting it down when necessary.
The protagonists in this book are strong apart from each other but better together. I do wish that Shade played a bigger role! There were some editing issues as far as a word missing here or extra words there, and a few spots where first and third person speaking in the story was switched but then I did read an ARC.
Overall I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery, intrigue, shifters and romance.
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
This is a different take on shifters which takes a little bit to understand. The part about the choice each shifter (kindred) had to make to give up their souls was a bit unusual and shows how depraved the group is once they lose their soul.
I enjoyed the book for the romance and the intrigue as Luc and Skye tried to figure out who was behind the fight ring and bring Shade's murder to justice. There was a bit of a mystery to who was behind the fights and a few red herrings to throw you off guessing who it was so it keeps you engaged as you try to figure it out!
I liked most of the characters and look forward to Nuala and Ethan's book and later Nik's. They are all such complex characters as they seem prone to the darkness that is nature to their kind and yet you can't help but like them!
3 stars with a push......
As a long time lover of paranormal romance, I had high hopes for Animal Instincts after reading the synopsis. Unfortunately, the world building was lacking and the main characters were unlikeable and irritating for the most part.
The story never really got off the ground and the floundering chemistry between the leads was extremely frustrating throughout the story. I really had to push to finish this one.
The first in a three part series. We're introduced to the Powers and the Kindred. Heaven and Hell reflected in both. Luc and Skye are torn between good and evil, and their growing attraction. Action packed from the start. A one sitting read that will have you begging for more.
This is a good book to get you hooked on this series. If you love shifter books this one is for you.
Luc and Skye met at an animal fight, she was there to soothe the animals, he was there for other reasons. Once they meet it's almost impossible for either not to think about the other. This is their story.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had a totally different take on shifters and at times I must admit I struggled with it and I usually love Patricia work.
Skye has the ability to communicate with the souls animals while her twin brother Shade can communicate with humans souls something that comes in very handy with his work as a detective When they are both involved in a rescue of animals from a dog fighting ring they realise there are more shifter here than anything It also puts Skye in the sights of Luc Lazare a man who has plenty of secrets of his own When Shade is killed Luc decides he needs to protect Skye but will that decision put her in even more danger You will have to read to see
This book was a really unique paranormal read. It felt like we dove into the second or third installment in a series because of the rather developed characters and story. We hit the ground running, meeting Skye and Shade, a pair of twins with interesting telepathic abilities. Shade, a cop, has a skill more geared towards police work, while Skye is able to communicate with animals. After breaking up some illegal animal fighting, Skye bumps into Luc, a stranger who has an inexplicable control over some wild animals.
Luc is a conflicted half breed who is straddling the human and "kindred" world. In this book, the word kindred refers to a group of demon-like creatures who can shapeshift. This book was filled with a really unique mythology and a mystery that had me guessing until the very end. The romance was nicely paced, as opposed to your typical love at first sight stories. It was heavier on the romance and mystery and light on the smut (although there was some). This was a great stand alone book to introduce yourself to this author.
