Wowsers I cannot believe this is the authors debut novel. This has to be the best audio I have ever listened to. it is freaking awesome.
I am in awe with the narrator she has told this story absolutely brilliantly. Her voice suits the main character and she has voice for all the others making them come to life.
The opening has me totally hooked I honestly couldn't stop listening to the book. It is addictive, engrossing, gripping, gritty. I felt like I was watching this on TV.
I am so happy that I've found myself a new detective I have fallen in love with! I love Bailey she is stubborn headstrong ,determined. Yes I am fangirling, but my god she is the bollocks!
Going undercover in a prison what more could I ask for this is a brilliant plot
Fans of Wentworth prison and bad girls will love it. This is an easy 5 star read for me. I loved it that much I brought the authors second book Villain half way through listening to this.
After struggling to download this book several times and re installing Netgalley for the 3rd time, I finally managed to listen to this audio.
It was good, I enjoyed the book..
I did feel that there was a lot of repetition and also a fair bit of padding to the book which was unnecessary in my opinion ad it was already a good book.
The protagonist was a shocker.
A very tense thriller at times, not one for bedtime reading.
DC Bailey Morgan was an undercover cop. After a bad job she quit. But after her colleague and friend was murdered on a drugs job she's asked to take over and go undercover in a prison. She's agrees to find out about the drug ring but more importantly who killed her friend. But when more inmates get murdered the race is on to find the killer.
I listened to this book on Audiobook. The author brought the book to life. She used different voices for the characters and made each one believable. This is a very fast paced, riveting read. The gang culture and corruption was very realistic. The sweet, tender moments she shares with Poppy brought a bit of light to the story. I didn't see the ending coming and loved how, although it was tied up nicely, there was still a cliffhanger. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Make sure you have enough time to read it in one sitting because you won't want to put it down. Highly recommended
I received my audio copy of Jailbird from Netgalley.
With hindsight I think I would have slightly preferred to have read this book for myself as although the narrator had a lovely and well modulated voice once she adopted a character's voice I found it quite annoying and eventually became a real irritation. I also felt that Bailey the undercover police officer would have adjusted her voice to fit in more easily.
As far as the plot was concerned it seemed well researched and realistic but it was so drawn out and, in my opinion, too long and I found my concentration often wandering.
Jailbird is the first book in a new series by Caro Savage featuring Morgan Bailey, a detective constable who has been assigned to work undercover.
This is a captivating and original story. Dripping with tension, the women's prison setting, HMP Foxbrook created a real feeling of apprehension. A perfect read for a dark, wintery night, I read this over a few nights snuggled under a warm blanket but still felt the chills from the author's fabulous writing. With an exceedingly strong plot and comfortable pacing, the mystery was absorbing and compelling. There were abundant twists and turns as the plot unfolded, and the story begged for an exceptional bunch of characters which they mostly were. The author dropped in plenty of tension and quite a lot of brutality and used the prison environment and the culture of abuse, drugs and violence to full effect. The conclusion was dramatic and one I definitely didn’t anticipate. Considering Jailbird is a début I was mightily impressed.
The audiobook was narrated by Genevieve Swallow and listening to the story was a terrific decision. I thought it was narrated really well and the narrator brought the necessary oomph to the proceedings, giving the individuals their own voice and inflections. Overall, Jailbird is a fantastic, highly recommended, gripping mystery/ thriller from Caro Savage and I am looking forward to seeing what DC Morgan Bailey gets into next in book two, Villian. 😊 ❄🥶
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Boldwood Books and Boldwood Books UK Audio via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
I liked this story but found the narrator really off-putting. My son walked in at one point and commented that the narration was really annoying. The tale itself is a good concept and an easy listen/read but not exactly brilliant. Still, it kept me company whilst cooking over Christmas
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me listen to this audiobook.
This book had me gripped from the very first chapter. It was a unique story with interesting characters.
The chapters were nice and short which helped keep the story moving and the suspense going.
The narrator was also amazing as was the writing style.
Narrator is 5 stars!! Such a soothing voice and I would gladly buy an audio book just to hear her voice tell me a story.
Jailbird 4 stars. This was a gripping story and I laid in bed late into the night needing to find out who the murderer was and why!!
First book I've read/ listen to by Caro Savage but definitely not the last
Right from the start I knew this was not going to be easy to out down, scary in parts because if the danger that the main character was in especially with her back story. Well written well read with twists and turns and who would expect that ending!!!

A gripping and exciting gangland crime thriller that I couldn't put down. This book kept me engrossed right from the start and made it even better was the fact I listened to it on audible. I loved it.
I really found this difficult to listen to. The narrator when she was reading the story was great but as soon as she started on the different voices it became very irritating - especially the Jamaican voice of one of the prisoners. The story itself was repetitive and unbelievable, listened to half of it then gave up - sorry
I really ought to be charging Ms Savage for a new set of nails, as I managed to chew all of mine off, despite the extra protection of Shellac. The tension was ramped up from the first chapter and didn't stop for a second. I was petrified the entire time for DC Bailey Morgan. I hadn't read the first book in the series, The Villain, but I will remedy that immediately. Genevieve Swallow provides superb voice performances for all the players involved. A real edge-of-your-seat, nerve shredding novel that I highly recommend.
I enjoyed this audiobook but it was unbelievably long. 13 hours! I was lucky I could listen at x1.5 speed because I'm unsure if my attention would have been held for that long.
It was a good plot and certainly drew me in initially, but I don't think it was strong enough to warrant that length. Looking back on it, I don't even really know why it had to be that long. There were a few characters, but they were all fairly distinct and the narrator did a good job at distinguishing them from each other. By the end, it was a satisfying resolution.
I don't know this author - but God, I'm going to find more books by her!!
THAT, was bloody brilliant!!
Exciting, gripping and perfectly narrated from start to finish.
Thanks so much Netgalley for gifting me a copy - can't wait for more!
The minute I saw Line Of Duty referenced I knew this was one for me. Took awhile to get going but once it did it didn’t disappoint. Really well written and the storyline flowed really well. There’s a good few characters to get to grips with but the different dynamics really works. Great insight into undercover work and really shows you the lengths undercover officers have to go to and you wouldn’t really class it as a job more so there life. Love a book where you don’t see the different aspects of the storyline coming and where there is so much going on but intertwined in some way. Definitely recommend...
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books UK Audio for the opportunity to read this ARC and review was published on the 15th of Oct.
Jailbird is a modern day thriller set in the world of covert policing. Bailey Morgan is sent undercover into a women’s prison after her colleague was murdered in there during a covert operation. Her job is to find out who is running the profitable drug trafficking operation, and who was responsible for her colleague’s death.
This is quite violent and graphic in parts but is well researched regarding prison regimes and processes. Perfect for fans of prison dramas and crime thrillers but a little too sensationalist for my tastes.
An enjoyable listen however it did frustrate me a little ! An undercover cop goes into prison to find out the source of drug smuggling. The gang that were running the prison were portrayed as extremely hardcore and yet the cover story the cop was given was that she was an accountant who had been caught embezzling funds , I just thought that this was extremely unbelievable, as would a particularly hardcore gang accept a member who was in for a white collar crime??? The narrator was good however I would’ve liked the character of Bailey ( the cop ) to not be as posh and a little bit more gritty but I suppose this was due to her undercover storyline, so this just ruined it a bit for me otherwise it would’ve been a really good read.
DC Bailey Morgan left the police force after an undercover gig nearly killed her, but she’s pulled back in when her colleague, Alice is murdered at the women’s prison where she has been working undercover. Bailey steps up and right into Alice’s shoes in the prison, where she soon discovers there’s no one she can trust, including her own law enforcement colleagues. Savage’s intense story coupled with Swallow’s terse delivery makes for ans exciting listen
There's something morbidly fascinating about fictional women's prisons and "Jailbird" doesn't disappoint, bringing the added bonus of an undercover police officer protagonist. Diverse characters, a solid plot and more than a few heart-stopping moments - Caro Savage creates tension from the opening chapter. I can't wait to read the next book in the DC Bailey Morgan series, "Villain". I also can't believe that "Jailbird" is a debut novel! Real nail-biting stuff. Gritty, gripping, great!
The audiobook is brilliantly narrated by Genevieve Swallow. She inhabits each character with enthusiasm, bringing each and every one vividly to life. First class job!
