I love Sandi Toksvig and unsurprisingly I loved this book. With the audio book it feels like a friend telling to stories of long forgotten relatives or gossip you can't believe you were never told! Educational and fun, it was amazing to learn something new every day.
Toksvig's Almanac 2021 is a brilliant if different take on the classic almanac, with characters and information you normally wouldn't get in a Almanac. It was a great listen.
Sandi Toksvig herself narrates this fascinating collection of tales, mainly about successful, powerful women - many of whom ignored by history. She is hilarious, interesting and I could have carried on listening to her forever. Highly entertaining. Recommended!
Really interesting, loved this book and it was a bit different to the types of book I normally read so a nice change.
As always Toksvig is informative and humorous. I just wish it was a little slower- my brain can’t hold much information at that speed so I had to listen to it in small sessions!
This is a fascinating listen and works incredibly well as an audiobook. This is my first audiobook review, but here goes.
I loved the concept behind this and listening to Sandi read it made it 10000000%, in my opinion. I think I preferred it in audiobook form as I feel like the consistent facts and humour would have been slightly lost on me if I read the book.
This piece of non-fiction explores female characters in history that haven't necessarily occupied the space in history that they deserve. As per an almanac, it goes through the year focusing on specific dates in month order, but the twist in this book is that it acknowledges the dates in history that have gone unnoticed before.
The narration gave this book a whole new dynamic for me, Sandi Toksvig just brought it completely to life! She had me cracking up, cheering in agreement and shaking my head in disgust all within a couple of paragraphs. I found the content fascinating anyway, but she really brought it to life.
This book is fascinatingly educational and taught me so much, it being narrated by Sandi was an absolute bonus. Sandi was a fantastic narrator providing humour that I don't think I would have read into it in the same way. I have recommended it to tonnes of people already and they have loved it as much as me.
Love it! I had already read this book, but hearing Sandi read it herself adds another layer to it! And so many interesting people I have never heard about. The audio books also put Sandi’s own enthusiasm and engagement even more obvious. If you liked the book, it’s still worth checking out the audiobook!
I found this book very interesting. Sandi has a fantastic voice and really brings the stories and individuals alive when she is telling their tales in the almanac. Sandi wants to give a strong voice to the women of the world who are often under appreciated.
I loved the audio version of this; Sandy is so engaging to listen to. The overall message of the book is fantastic as well. Some of the stories intrigued me more than others and I would have liked to have learnt more about those that did but overall a very good read.
I really hadn’t heard of many of these women who had been forgotten in history, so I found it really interesting. I think it’s a great diving-board and people can go on and carry out more research on the lives of the women that resonated with them.
I think for me, having the physical book would have been better - I think it’s a book that should be leafed through - it’s harder to do on an audiobook. That said, the obvious benefit of the audiobook is having Sandi Toksvig read her own book in her very unique style!
A great romp through history featuring stories from incredible women. Funny, witty and informative made this great to pick up and put down around daily activities and a joy to listen to.
I've enjoyed this, and Sandi is a fantastic narrator (which won't surprise anyone!) but I think this is the kind of book that would really benefit from being read on the page. I want to be able to flip back and forth, to easily be able to check entries for specific days, and to revisit particular stories. It's packed with fascinating information, and I know I'm not getting the most out of it in this format - the audiobook is a great taster, though, and I've ordered myself a hard copy.
Quite Interesting. In fact I think this should be marketed as a QI tie-in. Fans of the show would love this book. I've loved Sandi Toksvig since she was the young presenter of kid's TV show No. 73. Am I the only person old enough to remember this? Anyway, the book is an almanac of interesting tid-bits about women from history. Toksvig is on top form and it makes for an entertaining read.
Stuffed full of anecdotes and facts about famous women and women most people have never heard of.
Month by month women who have contributed to our history are recognised by their date or birth or death date.
I’m going to reread it !
I listened to Toksvig's Almanac 2021 as an audiobook and found it very interesting, incredibly detailed and thoroughly researched! I learned so much about women that I had previously had no idea about, a great read for those hoping to learn more about the forgotten sex.
Toksvig’s Almanac runs through the year month by month detailing the associated names. festivals and traditions as well as women that Sandi Toksvig feels should be better known. Many of these women have made rarely and barely acknowledged contributions to humanity through art, science or their activity to change and improve society while others have simply lived interesting, and occasionally disreputable, lives.
I take great pleasure in listening to, and watching, Sandi Toksvig whenever I get the opportunity and I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.
But this almanac is so jam-packed with facts and information it would be wonderful to have a hard copy on hand to dip into for a few minutes or to reference as a starting point for further study.
Highly recommended.
Thoroughly enjoyed this Almanac!
In true Almanac style, Sandi Toksvig takes us month by month through the year and pausing on notable dates to share a snippet of information about a notable women – most of whom you will never have heard of!
It is incredibly well researched but probably should come with a warning that you are just scratching the surface & will want to go off & search for more information about the women! There are also notes about why the months are named as they are, traditions in various parts of the world & Sandi’s inevitable wit & wry sense of humour!
I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Sandi Toksvig, and this really brought it to life. She is so passionate about women’s history & it definitely felt like she was excitedly telling you about her latest discoveries, not reading a script! I listened to it in the car during short drives (eg to/from work) and this worked really well – it’s very much a dip in & out book & one that needs concentration. I did find myself rewinding several times to relisten to something I’d missed or catch a name again.
Definitely a book to dip in & out of and one I will add to my shelf.
Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of this audiobook free via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own.
Sandi Toksvig is so wonderful! She narrates this very interesting audiobook with her trademark character and wit making it almost feel like you're listening to a podcast.
The book itself is utterly fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about these different women.
Interesting, fun and purely wonderful in style, Tolksvig's Almanac is the book that will entertain and take you to corners of facts that you may never come across otherwise. Written and narrated in her own unique style, it's all fascinating for the brain. If you like QI or Chain of Curiosity, or humour within your history, this is one to check out, in fact a Must Have to add to your collection. Wit, Substance and Facts are all brought to the page in an absolutely marvellous, unique, eclectic, quirky style. It will have you intrigued and have you laughing too as you meander through each month. It is perfect for either listening to all at once or to dip in and out of. It's such a joy to listen to and it would be to read as well. It is all pitched perfectly. This is one of those times I'll say this is a Must Have Book or Audiobook for your shelves.
I've read most of Sandi Toksvig's books - fiction and non-fiction and they never cease to amaze and I have adored her fiction and non-fiction books, ever since Whistling For The Elephant's was published and read many more since, so I was curious and I loved this too.
Sandi Toksvig takes you through many facts, philosophies and into corners you may not realise existed before as she meanders through each month of the year. Sure, you'd have heard of the main themes, but she delves into areas, rarely talked about. Sounds serious, but fear not, this is historical fact and humour spun together and also relates back to present times too.
There is much to learn and is well researched, written and (narrated for audiobook, which I listened to), in her own wonderful style that is unique to her and thank goodness for that! Sandi Toksvig makes everything sound very interesting and hooks you in. She adds a bit of her own personal analogies, thoughts and tips that readers/listeners may never have thought of otherwise...
She talks of extraordinary women, some who have achieved many great things, but also those who have committed crimes. There are so many different accounts that is interesting to dip and out of. She encourages people to use this as a starting point and then go off and perhaps look up more info yourself. Sandi Toksvig's curiosity is also infectious. Her thirst for knowledge is impressive as is her research. All perfectly pitched, it is a Must Have on your reading or listening to lists.
Anyone who says Toksvig is self-indulgent in this is entirely misunderstanding the concept of learning for the sake of learning. Toksvig does a wonderful job of meandering - it's a book that is meant to slow you down, pace your days, delight and invite discovery. Hugely entertaining, and I wish I had listened to it sooner. Recommended to all my friends and family, and I can only hope they take me up on the offer even though I've regaled much of the book to them already...
