I really liked this and what it did. It wasan't my favourite book by TJR but i liked what it did do. I wish that it focused more on the 1950s to 70s as those sections were my favourite and there was more on Kit as she didn't have enough and it felt like Nina had way more than the rest. Kit's "revelation" should have been expanded on more as there just wasn't enough there for me and it was mentioned brefly over 60% of the way through. It would have been nice to have less chapters from the party guest perspectives as it got confusing who they all were. I did like the ending but i wish there had been more fall out about what happened at the party as everything was wrapped up a bit too neatly.
I loved this book. My first by this author but I will be getting her others following this. A wonderful family saga covering from the 50's to the 80's in Malibu. Starting as a regular beach town to the glamour Malibu became the story follows four siblings. Most of the story is set over one day and one night. The famous party thrown each year by Nina. So many secrets, surprises and mystery guests form a stunning end to the party. A fabulous read.
Once again Taylor Jenkins Reid’s knocks it out of the park with her vivid and dynamic characters. Set over one day with judicial use of flashbacks, it follows the trials and tribulations of the Riva family and how it all blows up at their famous annual party.
The sheer drama packed tightly into it was riveting and I was engrossed from the first page. Like with Daisy Jones we get multiple points of view from a wide cast of characters who all help in telling the story of the Riva’s. From legendary musicians who are serial adulterers, bombshell surf models, and famous tennis players this is another tale of rags to riches, glamour and all the pitfalls that come with fame. Even with characters that we only spend a chapter with we get a clear sense of who they are and it’s a testament to Reid’s skill to write such real characters.
We get another powerful story of people thrust into fame and especially the horrors that come with being a famous woman in the 20th century. The main character Nina Riva spent her teenage years sacrificing everything to support her family but eventually finds financial security in being a surf model. We see how men treat her based on her ad campaigns and feel like they have the right to touch her because she’s a poster on teenage boy’s walls.
Overall, this was a book I could not put down like Reid’s other books. A perfect summer read and a heart-warming story of siblings who have each other’s back when it seems no one else will.
Thanks to Cornerstone for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review
This is the third book I have read by this author, and she is certainly making a name for herself with her excellent writing style!
I had seen this book a lot on my social media platforms with rave reviews, and now that I have read it, it is easy to see why.
This book really held my interest all the way through. The story reverts back and forth in time and centres around the Riva family, from the 50's to the early 80's.
I loved the family drama, the setting of Malibu, and the clever story. Highly recommend it and look forward to seeing what Taylor comes up with next!
The date is set to August 1983 and the Riva sibling are about to throw their annual party for the rich and famous. But before we visit that we are taken back through time to explore the dysfunctional relationships of the Riva's parents and discover how they were led into their lives.
Malibu Rising delves into the family life of the famous Mick Riva and his wife June. Mick is dishonest and unloyal to his family on more than one occasion. We seen the heartache experienced by June and as struggles to raise her now 4 children. Once this all becomes too much the eldest daughter Nina steps in to raise her siblings on her own.
The story focuses on 6 main characters of this family and alternates between times frames of the past and present. Even though Malibus Rising is not directly linked to Taylors previous book Evelyn Hugo, I really enjoyed the way the characters linked up and was glad I had read the other book previously.
I did relate to these characters and really felt the heartache along with the Riva siblings. Although I feel the book did drag on a little too much therefore not quite hitting a climax at any one point. Once the party finally starts so many new characters start to emerge. But with so little time each I felt they all started to meld into one another.
I really enjoy Taylors writing style and will definitely continue to read her books. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was a huge fan of "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and have been dying to read Malibu Rising. When I read the blurb of this book, I thought it was going to be about a bunch of rich people and their socialite problems but man, this is SO much more than that.
This book is full of fiercely strong, self-made people who you will root for from beginning to end. I didn't think of this as a beach read but rather as a wonderful portrayal of a family that tries to be better than its previous generation.
I cannot wait for what TJR comes up with next!
Thanks to Netgalley and Randomhouse UK for the e-ARC but I was so impatient that I'd already gotten the physical copy by the time my request was approved. I really appreciate the approval.
This was the first book I have ever read by Taylor Jenkins Reid and I wasn't disappointed. There's a lot of hype around their previous work so I came into this one hopeful and I wasn't let down.
I loved the flashbacks that told us the story of Mick and his wife. Their story pulled at my heartstrings and I wanted to find out more about their relationship than I did the events of the party. The entire family was interesting and learning more about the Riva children was thrilling. Unfortunately, the story centred on the unlikable Mick and his exploits.
The character development in the story was second to none. A wonderful holiday read that will have you yearning for the gorgeous descriptions of Malibu that Reid so effortlessly weaves. A thoroughly enjoyable book!
Completley consumed by this book, a perfect summer read that had me engrossed from start to finish. I have read some other books fromt his authir and they have never disappointed. I loved it one of my books of the year. Not going to say anymore so i do not ruin it for other readers
Loved it. I just loved it. 😍😍😍😍
I was a massive fan of Daisy Jones and the Six and this book has those same cool vibes, and was the perfect escapism.
The story follows the Riva family and it all starts in Malibu, 1983 at Nina Riva’s annual end of summer party. The Rivas are famous and everyone wants to be at the party. By midnight the party is completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion has gone up in flames. But before all that, one unforgettable night with bring the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations bubbling to the surface.
The highlights for me 👇
~ the summery beach vibes. I could feel the sand in my toes and sea breeze through my hair. The writing was so vivid. Also, who doesn’t love an end of summer party?!!! I’m always here for the party folks 😎
~ the family drama. Love a family saga and this book had so many interesting and flawed characters, which I couldn’t help but love. Nina, surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay, a championship surfer, and Hud, a renowned photographer; and their baby sister, Kit. And of course, June, their mother and their father, the legendary singer, Mick Riva. These characters really came to life! 🤩
~ the romance. Following June and Micks love through the years was so gripping and heartbreaking! 😭 I don’t want to spoil anything but their love life doesn’t run smoothly. The flashbacks were so brilliantly written and weaved into the narrative.
Malibu Rising is one wild ride. Such a fantastic summer read. Full of emotion, memorable characters and a compelling storyline. Highly recommend. ☀️
I just want to move to Malibu and surf all day. Is that too much to ask?!! 😂
Going into this, I did wonder if it would beat Daisy Jones and the Six for the TJR top spot! I uploaded a whole video on my Booktube channel where I read all of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books and decide which one I think is best. Malibu Rising did pretty well!
I loved the setting of this one. I've never been to California, let alone Malibu, but the vibes I got from this book made me feel like I was there at the beach. I tend to really enjoy books about fame (in Hollywood more than bands or singers), and this one encompassed the glam outward lifestyle with the dirty undertones perfectly.
This family is a mess, mostly because the siblings' dad is an absolute arse. But, they have each other. I love the siblings' relationships in this one. I loved how Reid alternated back and forth, showing the reader how the parents and siblings' lives led up to this point, and then snapping back to the "present" with the build up to the fiery party.
While I didn't love this one as much as Daisy, I think it holds up pretty nicely to Evelyn. I would love to read all three of them back to back to reaquaint myself with this world that Reid has built, and really dive into the character relationships again because it's all just so interesting.
I loved it!
I enjoyed this book but it didn't grab me the way I thought it would. The story focuses on the Riva family who in many ways are very dysfunctional due to the parental choices that affect each of the siblings they produced. I think I just didn't warm to any of the characters and found the story a bit over the top, especially the infamous party that happens in the second part of the book. I am sure many readers will have rated this higher but for me I found it mediocre. Thank you to Netgalley , the author and publisher for the copy of the book, this review is mine only.
One of my favourite reads of 2021.
This book has it all going on- a glam Malibu setting, dynamic characters that I fell in love with, family tension and one big messy party.
If you love character driven reads, then you'll love TJR's books, and this one is a prime example of how on top of her author game she is.
Fab, fab, fab.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid is set in the 1950s and in the 1980s as Nina Riva is getting ready for the Riva family annual party, which has become the place to be
Nina's professional tennis playing husband has left her for another professional tennis player, and Nina is trying to work out what the point of it all is, and is dreading the party.
People who aren't dreading it are her siblings - her professional surfer brother Jay and Hud, the professional photographer, who takes Jay's photo, and her little sister Kit. They are all good looking, good surfers, and their father, whilst alive, is estranged from them all.
This is a very atmospheric book, with family tensions that made you keep turning the pages so you can learn more about where they started. Being able to see Mick Riva starting out in the 1950s makes this more poignant, as you follow the family from the start.
Malibu Rising was published on 27th May 2021 and is available from Amazon , Waterstones and Bookshop.org .
You can follow Taylor Jenkins Reid on Twitter , Instagram , Facebook and her website . This was the first of her books that I've read, but I'll be finding her others, such as Daisy Jones & The Six.
I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review, and so my thanks to NetGalley and to Cornerstone, Random House .
School holidays usually means I dial back my work meetings a little and work from home as much as I can, I also take a few days off as rec leave here and there and read and write. I finished this one on the weekend. I have been a Taylor Jenkins-Reid fan for many years now, and I absolutely loved this one, although I wouldn’t say it was my favourite of hers… but still one I definitely recommend! I will say that by the second half of the book, I couldn’t put it down!
I don’t really know which one is my favourite, they’re all amazing.... and that doesn't mean this isn't a recommendation, because I definitely recommend it!
I absolutely loved the characters, and the interactions between them. It's set in the 1980s. The plot of the book focuses on the big annual party the siblings were hosting, but then flips back to their parents becoming a couple.
Thanks to NetGalley for another great read in return for an honest review.
Okey, now, this book was soooo mf good I don't know what else to say. Everything was perfect: charcters, plot, everything. I just say it was pure pleasure to read this and I will definitely read another books written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I recommend it to everyone. Just go and read this book. ♾️/5⭐
Thank you NetGalley for providing digital advanced copy in exchange for honest review.
Malibu Rising is a very good book, that had the potential to be amazing.
I loved the flashbacks that told us the story of Mick and his wife and I found myself pulled to that time more than the events of the party. That probably happened because I lost track of the secondary characters we met for a paragraph or a page and added nothing to the story.
All the Riva kids had interested stories and I wanted to explore more of their lives and characters. The problem was that this book was about Mick.
Finally, Mick started as a charismatic kind of a bad boy and ended up a bad bad man. There was no redemption story, not really. His appearance in the end added nothing to the story.
P.s.: I really appreciated the Easter eggs !
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
a book that made me experience an entire spectrum of emotions. character driven just the way i like it!
A generous 4 stars from me. The beginning read like a reiteration of Daisy Jones and the Six. I love Taylor Jenkins Reid's voice but this book was far too long for my taste and lacked flow. There's a good story buried inside it but it didn't really get the opportunity to shine as much as I would have liked. I'd still recommend it. Thank you so much to the publisher for the ARC!
I genuinely don't know what to think of this book. It felt so disjointed and instead of being about the Riva family it was filled with vignettes of other people who had no real impact on the plot. I understand its there because the novel is set during the biggest party Malibu has ever seen so we're getting the full scope, but still.
I feel like there was so many plot threads and characters that should have been explored more but weren't because of all the other subplots.
Maybe it's me but this didn't read like Reid's previous books and was came across very messy overall.
I did cry at one point, but I don't think it was particularly earned.
However, this book is filled with melodramatic drama and atmosphere that I think will be devour this on a hot summer afternoon.
If you want a book to get lost in this summer
This is the book for you
A great book
Plenty to hook you in
Thanks NetGalley
