I was expecting a romance that started out as friends with benefits, but I got so much more than that! It’s a touching book about how families are not always made up by biological relatives.
Lexie married Daryl after his first wife was killed. He had a small boy named Connor and Lexie became his mother over time, especially when Daryl left to work overseas and they decided to divorce.
With Daryl gone, Lexie and Connor become close to Theo, Connor’s godfather and Lexie’s work partner at a restaurant they own. When Daryl comes back, all the characters are all forced to examine their feelings and relationships with one another.
I loved the characters and felt like I knew them by the end. I highly recommend this book, 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I didn't know what to expect when I started this, since I've never read this author's previous work, but, when i tell you I absolutely loved everything about this novel, It was a wonderful surprise; from the characters and their love for one another, and their new beginnings for their relationships had me giddy. All in all, definitely one I would recommend to others!
This was the first book I’d read by this author and I loved it so much I went and purchased her entire back catalogue!
It was a very well told story that I have recommended to others.
There is way more to this book that what initially meets the eye! It covers some sensitive subjects such as single parents, mental health and sexual orientation. I love the way that Theo and Lexie handle the complexity of a teenager. I read it in one day and thoroughly enjoyed it! That much so, I would have loved an epilogue!
Life had changed for Lexie when her husband went to greener pastures at work, and she was left bringing up her soon to be ex-husband’s son, Connor, juggling at her job, and paying those bills. Basically what we call adulting. But with only her best Theo as her support, she managed until one drunken night…
They became FBB. Friends with Benefits.
Having read many books by this talented author, I knew Lisa Swift would give me more than a drunken fumble. And I was right. She gave me genuine emotions, real life problems and a step-son who was dealing with his sexuality.
With the re-entry of her not-so-much of an ex, her life toppled over and what was to be sexy-me time became angsty and teary. That louse!! But fear not, author Lisa Swift was present with the bold strokes of color to show what Lecie was all about. It was amazing to see this courageous woman find her way through explosive emotional mines.
The story had well etched characters, hot steamy romps between the sheets, and implosion of feelings. Don’t I know how to zap my Saturday?
A totally enjoyable read that I read in one day. I thought this book would be a typical romantic read but turned out to be so much more. This author is going to be one I watch out for in future as I really enjoyed the style of writing. . The story is based around the lives of a young woman , Lexie who is left to raise her stepson Conor when his father goes AWOL . With the help of Conor's dad best friend , Theo she has managed to create a happy life, and even has an arrangement with Theo to be friend with benefits as she does not want to date anyone else. She is content with her life until her ex shows up. I recommend this book as it really is so much more than a chic kit read touching on important topics relevant to raising teenagers today.
I usually love the friends with benefits narrative and this story was no exception. I was rooting for Lexie and Theo from the get go. But what I enjoyed even more was Lexie's stepson Connor's story which was full of heart and young teenage love.
Thanks NetGalley for an advanced copy.
I must admit that I didn’t go into this book, having high expectations. I just figured I was going to get a sexy romance about friends that sleep together. But it my surprise I got so much more then that. It’s a novel about friendship, love and found family.
There is a sensitive situation, that I don’t want to ruin. But I feel like the author did this justice and was done well.
This book shows you that you can choose your family. Also loved the many adventures they went on.
Okay I can't believe I missed this book! What the fudge is wrong with me? Okay, my excuse is I was new on Netgalley at that time. Didn't know what 'archive' means. Sorry. But I do now. Not gonna let it happen. In Sha Allah!
eally enjoyable story. Meandering narrative that goes far beyond what I expected. Great characters and an unexpected depth to the story. Easy to read and easy to enjoy. Great mix of light hearted and serious. Recommended read.
Thank you Netgalley
While separated from her husband, Lexie continues taking care of her teenage stepson, Connor. As she learns, being a single parent to a teenage son is hard, especially when his father is less than involved. Theo, her business partner and best friend, is the one person that she can rely on when everything in life is less than stellar. After a very drunken night, they enter into a friends with benefits relationship, but can they keep their feelings separate and remain just friends as they agreed upon?
This was a fairly run of the mill contemporary romance. Nothing particularly amazing stood out to me, nor were there any glaring issues that made this less than enjoyable. The plot was interesting enough to keep you going and it didn’t drag on at any points, but I probably won’t remember this plot a year from now.
When it comes to unusual family dynamics, this book is right up there. Told from the points of view of the two protagonists and a 14 year old boy, it is unusual and moving. Setting the romance aside, it is refreshingly different to see life through the eyes of a teenage boy who is beginning to explore who he is and his place in the world.
Then there are the various and diverse parenting issues that are explored in fascinating detail, and it brings home to the reader that what makes a family is love not biology.
With lots of emotion and drama, this is a page-turning romance not to be missed.
This was my first book by this author, It was pretty enjoyable. I would give this book a 3.5 star rating! It was a pretty Quick and easy read!
The title and cover of this book caught my attention. The synopsis sounded interesting and a little different to usual chick-lit storylines.
Lexie is the main character. She is living a picture-perfect life, but things suddenly change and she finds herself raising her step-son alone. The story sees Lexie embark on an initially casual relationship with Theo and readers witness the changes in the relationship as the book progresses.
I felt characters were well written and the author’s inclusion of Connor’s sexuality storyline was handled sensitively and without it feeling ‘thrown in’.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I never felt truly hooked into the story, but I did enjoy reading it.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for my advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 📚
this book is good front start to finish a brill story of modern day family life and very down to earth romantic in a fashionable way and will look foreward to reading books by this author
Friends With Benefits by Lisa Swift
Lexie Whittle thought she had life all sewn up with a handsome husband, a beautiful home and a fabulous stepson. That is, until her husband left to work overseas.
This was a good book with very interesting characters, good ones and mean ones. About a boy whose Mom had died, but he found another woman to love him. A very mean, distant father , who didn’t deserve such a fine boy. The father tries Vito take the boy canary from Lexie. Does he come to the right decision? A must read book and I recommend it.
Thanks to Net Galley for sending me an advanced reader’s copy for review.
The premise here was very good: a friends-to-lovers chick-lit romance. It didn’t work for me, maybe the problem was me. I’m starting to think chick-lit is not a genre I enjoy.
I’m sure chick-lit fans will love this book!
This book was a fun, easy read. It was cute, quirky and funny. The characters felt like my own friends, and they were described so well! It was almost like I was there. I had a hard time even putting this down. Would definitely recommend this!
Another favorite by a great author. This made me smile as i wad reading it. The plot of the story was very well written. The author really draws the reader in as you read. I felt like I was an unnamed character in the story.
Feel so lucky to have read this. It was exactly what was needed while also being unique. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
