Thank you to Netgalley for a pre publication copy. In return for an honest review #youandmeonvacation #netgalley
Poppy and Alex are good friends they holiday every summer somewhere new. Normally something related to cheap travel for Poppy's blog or for her magazine column. Until one summer changes everything! Will they ever get back their summer trips? And will they ever be the same again?
I previously read Beach Read and absolutely loved it. So knew that I was jumping for any new Emily Henry books to come into my emails.
The concept of the story is great and had huge potential to be another 5/5 rom com to take us away into Alex and Poppy's world away from the atrocities happening in the world today. However unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The story line itself was well thought out and something that I normally enjoy reading. However it felt very 2dimensional with no emotion put into any part of it. Even the scenes where you knew the characters would feel such high emotion. It was conveyed to the reader and felt like we were just walking around the supermarket with them.
Furthermore I found the book to have a slow and at times confusing start. Partly due to the jumping around to previous summers and then this summer for alternative chapters. Although towards the end you begin to get used to it because they read as individual stories and the time frame of how many years ago is irrelevant.
Also I felt that a lot was hidden from the reader about what happened to stop Alex and Poppy talking for so many years. You didn't find out until the last 10%. I wonder if this was explained at the beginning and made an emotional start whether the romance at the end would have felt more sensitive, important and would put you on the edge of your chair with suspense.
I found this book very hard to rate. What was given to the reader was solid and the books storyline had a lot of potential. However there remained parts where the reader is left wanting more of a backstory about their sudden change in relationship and that the whole of the story felt devoid of any emotional, suspense and left you feeling it was 2dimensional. Therefore I feel this book is a 2.5 Stars out of 5. As opposed to a solid amount stars.
There are no words to describe how much I enjoyed reading this book. The angst and the romance and the swoon. I just loved it all and will read anything this author writes in the future. An y little crumb, I'm there.
Another hit for a favourite author now. This one was even more enjoyable for me than her debut novel. I loved the characters and their interaction much more and it added much more complexity to the overall story.
Beautiful romance that many readers will enjoy .
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy
I absolutely adored You and Me On Vacation by Emily Henry. Such a feel good read, perfect for when you are on vacation. This author has definitely become an auto buy for me. A delightful and highly recommended romcom.
I’ve come to realise this author is not for me! And I know I’m an outlier. I read a few chapters, but could not get into the story. Thanks for the chance.
You and Me on Vacation was a highly anticipated read for me and it did not disappoint!
I loved the two main characters in this book, and I especially loved the best friend too - she was so cool! I really enjoyed reading about Alex and Poppy’s yearly holidays and was eager to find out what went wrong. Poppy was a really brilliant character for me and her character development was very important.
My reason for 4 stars is that it didn’t WOW me like a 5 star read would, but I’m very critical about giving out 5 stars!
BEACH READ is up there with one of my next reads!
Overall, this was a very fun read. It gave me serious wanderlust vibes, reading it when I couldn't go on holiday anywhere. Friends to lovers is not my favourite trope (much prefer a good old enemies to lovers) but this was still done well and I felt a good connection with the characters. Of course, with the back and forth chapters over the years, you do know where the story is going but that is kind of always the case with romantic reads. We aren't reading them to be shocked when people get together. I wouldn't say I enjoyed this as much as Beach Read, but it still did live up to my now high expectations of Emily Henry.
Ok I am not typically a romance person but Poppy and Alex made me fall in love with both of them and their story! It is a predictable, light hearted romance, so there’s not much in the way of twists.
I am so jealous of Poppy’s job though and found so much travel inspiration from this book too 😂 Definitely an enjoyable read and I’d recommend this for romance fans.
After loving Emily Henry's first adult book, Summer Read, I was really looking forward to discovering more from this author. Especially as the first reviews I saw about You and Me on Vacation were phenomenal!
And they were not wrong. I absolutely loved this book, this story and this characters. Summer Read was great escapism but this one is pure escapism. I was completely immersed in this story, following our main characters in their adventures around the globe.
But the stars of this book were not the multiple locations, as you might think, but the characters and their journey together and apart. Two best friends who had nothing in common somehow clicked and then grew apart. It might sound like nothing special but it is. Trust me. It is one of the most special friendships I have read about in years.
Their connection, their highs, their lows, their comings and goings... it was addictive. I wanted to know everything about them from page one: how the met, why they fought, what they used to talk about, what bothered them from one another... I just couldn't get enough of them. And Emily Henry certainly delivered. I finished this book with such a positive feeling. Definitely one to revisit soon.
A light read, and perfect to pack into your bag if you're heading to the beach or the pool. This was the perfect escape at a time when we couldn't travel, so imagining being able to do that was a vacation in and of itself. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it (I liked her first novel, "Beach Read" much more.) It's a classic rom-com and entertaining. I look forward to reading more novels from Emily Henry.
Unfortunately, I was unable to read this book due to a formatting error. The review is based on the blurb.
I loved this book!!
Alex and Poppy meet at university at form an unlikely friendship (unlikely because they are polar opposites). They start a traditional of taking a summer trip together and the story progresses through flash backs to previous holidays and a narrative of their current trip.
The writing is witty causing lots of snorting (me) and confused looks (my family). I won't spoil the end but it's perfect. Thank you netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book.
Adored it. Cannot get enough of this author.
Emily Henry's books are a joy to read, they read like a movie. Her characters are so human, by the end of the book I feel like I'm friends with them.
I really tried to get into this book but unfortunately I couldn't. I don't know if it is an age thing - I couldn't relate to the characters, the story started off a bit all over the place - back and forward, or if it was me. This was a DNF but thank you for the opportunity.
Ever since Beach Read, Emily Henry is a hot, blinking light on my radar for writing the most exciting rom com. Like her previous book, don’t be fooled by the light-hearted, sugary cover - this is a deep friends-to-lovers story with sharp lines. The characters are intense, one-of-kind and reassuringly real and messy. From start to finish, I was laughing at the quips and frowning at the complexity of the relationships described.
I love opposites-attract and this book does it so well. Poppy is adorably loud while Alex is reserved and self-conscious. When they get together it’s both comforting and hilarious. I’m not a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope as it can be quite frustrating and the ‘will-they-won’t-they’ question lingers into a slow burn. To be honest, this book did have some long moments and I was glad that I listened to it as an audiobook. It was more relaxing to listen to some of the awkward moments. The narration was also energetic, sophisticated and avoided being too embarrassing when it came to the more romantic parts (which can be a problem when there’s one narrator doing male and female voices!).
Most of all You And Me… stood out to me as a truly deep exploration of relationships; what people mean to each other and how we need them at particular moments of our lives. It stayed with me and I can’t wait for the next book.
Enjoyed this book. Liked the characters, and found the story well written.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
Loved loved loved this!
Just my type of book.
I loved the premise of the book and the writing was really easy to follow.
The characters were enjoyable to get to know and I loved going on so many vacations!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately I didn’t love it. The time hopping became quite irritating and made the story very long winded. I quite liked the characters but felt maybe half the amount of previous holidays would have been better and perhaps more about those ones. Overall it was okay but not as great as I was expecting x
While a lot of friends are jealous I got an arc of this I didn’t love the book. It was really hard to get through the first few chapters and I just didn’t connect to/relate with the characters. I know this went on to become a booktwt & booktok fave but it just wasn’t for me. I do like the author’s writing and will give her other works a go (Beach Read).
After having not loved Beach Read (also by Emily Henry), I was slightly nervous going into this one, but I loved this! The characters of Alex and Poppy were so fleshed out and interesting, and they worked together - the tension that was created throughout the novel, with the present day as well as flashbacks was interesting and MADE SENSE which is something I find so many romance novels lack! I loved the way that we see their friendship develop and the development of feelings between the two, even though we only get Poppy's perspective, and the change in their dynamic as they come to that realisation. Even the dilemma of the third act (something I tend to find cringey and annoying) was well written and worked perfectly with this story! If you love slow burn romances, this is perfect for you!
The writing has developed leaps and bounds from her debut. Where I felt that there were plot holes in beach read, even if the romance was cute and smutty, People We Meet on Vacation was beautifully written with well developed characters and thought out plot lines. There was nothing in the plot that made it seem far fetched or that it was trying to compete with the likes of Colleen Hoover or other more 'out there' romance authors. This book was perfect!
I can't wait to read more of Henry's books in the future and see how her writing develops further!
