Beth and Tom live happily in the UK and are about to get married the next week, Beth receives a call from her husband to be from work and he sounded different and unlike himself and she realizes there's something wrong. Tom goes missing and they are on the hunt to find what happened to him, Beth gets questioned because she's not telling the full truth about her suspicions about him.
But maybe their marriage isn't as perfect as it seems. Beth fears the worst when police show up at her door .. her husband hasn't come home from work ... has something happened to him?
It was even worse than she thought. Tom has been arrested and accused of murdering an old girlfriend .. before he met and married Beth. Katie has supposedly been traveling for years, and it's just come to the light that she actually has been missing .. assumed dead.
Beth doesn't quite believe her husband capable of murder, but there are hints along the way that maybe ... just maybe ... she has known more than she's saying. Is it a case .. she's known and ignored it... she's kept quite fearing for her own life and that of her daughter.
The story is told from two timelines... now and 8 years ago. Voices that speak are Beth, Tom, Katie, and one unknown person. Lies and secrets are slowly are slowly revealed ... leading to a shocking and unexpected conclusion.
This is the author's debut novel and she's done a bang-up job is keeping it suspenseful from start to finish. She, herself, has a psychology degree, so I would expect at least a modicum of credibility ... I was not disappointed.
Really good read. Very good character development, good story line with clues dropped throughout that keep the reader guessing. A very good read that I would recommend.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars
I wanted to like this book but I went into it thinking it would be a thriller and it's more of a contemporary/drama with a smidge of thriller. I also really didn't like the chapters involving Tom's POV. It didn't offer much in terms of the plot and I wanted it to be more about Rachel instead of his past. The twist did surprise me in the end and it was an interesting premise, just not quite my cup of tea.
I really enjoyed this. I thought it was a decent read. At times I didn't agree with all of Beth's actions and reactions but it was okay.
How well do we really know those closest to us? This book really hooked me from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down. Told from the perspective of different people and timelines. Very well developed with twists and turns and an ending I didn’t guess. I will definitely be looking for more by this author. Thanks to NetGalley for the privilege to read and review this book.
I loved this book from Alice Hunter! Unputdownable read and definitely to be a hit for the summer.
What would you do if you discovered your husband had killed? And not just once but more?
What would you do to protect your child?
Beth has to answer these questions and more following a knock on the door by the police one evening. the book uncovers her own investigation into what happened in the past, with chilling results.
Brilliant read, thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exhange for my honest review.
Beth and Tom seem to happily married and have a daughter Poppy and a beautiful home.
Things are not always as they seem and when the police turn up at Beths door and Tom being late from work, Wheels begin to spin in Beths mind and she begins to question their idyllic relationship.
The police explain that Tom has been arrested and charged with the murder of an old girlfriend. Is her capable of murder.? Has she been ignoring clues ? Will their home and family be ripped apart? All these questions and more race through Beths mind.
The dual timeline of the story was interesting as are the different perspectives of the different characters.
Slowly the plot unfurls and the unexpected ending was revealed. I did enjoy the book but personally found it could have been faster paced.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this great book.
One evening, while Beth is waiting for her husband to come home in time to say goodnight to their daughter, Poppy, two police officers knock at the door. She has no idea why Tom is so much later than he usually is, and is puzzled by why the police suddenly want to question him, after all this time, about the disappearance of his former girlfriend, Katie?
The idea behind The Serial Killer’s Wife is intriguing, but the execution is not completely convincing. Most of the story is told from the unusual viewpoint of Beth, with occasional contributions from Tom, and flashbacks from Katie. This could have been a much more interesting story – it took too long to get going, and there are just too many repetitive passages about Beth carrying on as normal while Tom is in police custody.
Tom and Beth are both unreliable narrators, which is not uncommon in this kind of story. Unfortunately, I had little sympathy for either of them. His thoughts show him to be self-absorbed, controlling and violent, but I’m not sure his narrative voice was convincing as that of a serial killer. Right from the start Beth’s behaviour is strange. She seems obsessed with how others see her and giving her daughter a better life than she had when she was growing up. This might have been easier to understand had Alice Hunter let the reader in on a bit of her backstory; instead she just comes across as self-obsessed and heartless.
Despite having lived in the village for two years, they don’t seem to have made any friends, even though their daughter is at the nursery school. This isolation should ring alarm bells. The overwhelming feeling is that they are both hiding something; their perfect life is just a façade.
There is one final twist right at the end; I did not see it coming, but it felt forced and perhaps The Serial Killer’s Wife would have been a better book without it. The writing is good, and I kept reading to the end, but the character development leaves a lot to be desired. I will certainly look out for Alice Hunter’s next book even though this debut did not live up to my expectations.
Thanks to Avon and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.
Beth and Tom seem to have it all ... a solid marriage, a young daughter, a beautiful home.
But maybe their marriage isn't as perfect as it seems. Beth fears the worst when police show up at her door .. her husband hasn't come home from work ... has something happened to him?

Many thanks to the author / Avon Books UK / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
3.5 Stars for this debut novel.
Beth and Tom are THAT couple…perfect! Or so everyone thinks until there is a knock on the their door and everything changes, then the whispers start. Her perfect husband is accused or murder.. and everyone thinks she HAD to know. Storyline follows Beth, in their small village and Tom, in jail…until the unexpected ending.
Quick read, most characters are unlikeable, but some are totally relatable until they aren’t! Small village/town life is well described. Starts off with a bang, but slows down soon after. I enjoyed the dual narrators, one male and one female, and the character development. Ending leaves you to believe there could be a sequel, which I would love to read. Recommend as a vacation read!
Thanks to Ms. Hunter, Avon Books UK and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone!
An excellent read that kept me engaged throughout and had a great ending. I would recommend this book to crime lovers out there. Thank you NetGalley for my review copy.
I absolutely loved this book! It gripped me right from the start and I stayed up well into the night to finish it.
I saw a few of the twists coming, but it was still enjoyable as was so fast-paced that it maintained the momentum throughout.
I look forward to reading more from this author.
My first read from this Author and won't be my last.
A very intense psychological thriller that has more twists and turns then a Country road.
You won't want to put it down.
This one had me guessing from the very beginning.
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon books UK and the Author, Alice Hunter for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
How couldn’t you know? Alice’s life takes a turn for the unexpected when her husband is taken into the police for questioning and is arrested. She’s left alone with more questions than answers. I found this book to be unique and really enjoyed reading it!
Alice Hunter take a bow, this is an outstanding psychological masterpiece. I honestly don’t know how any written review will do this beauty justice.
I have loved Beth as a character, she has seemed likeable and genuine from the very beginning. The author has made it easy for us to want good things for her and little Poppy.
Tom has been a character I have been unsure about but quickly disliked. This is definitely something easy to do but I really have struggled to find any likeable qualities from what we learn about him.
Alongside these characters, the author has included a range of ‘side’ characters. Again, I’ve had differing opinions of these. Each are well written and created with enough depth that you can form this thoughts about them.
I have loved how this book is written, I have been able to completely fall into the pages. The author has literally made me feel as though I’m right there with the characters which takes a true talent. I have literally devoured the pages of this one.
The cover of this is stunning. It’s enough to capture the eye of the reader, arouse curiosity and intrigue but mysterious enough to keep the reader wanting more.
There is nothing negative I can say about this book. It is a delight to read, filled with suspense and oh my goodness that ending. I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us following this book.
I have definitely been converted as a fan of this wonderful author. This is a superb read, deserving of all the stars and one I highly recommend.
If you're looking for a beach read that doesn't take much thinking, this may satisfy you. That said, the story is slow, and I don't mean slow burn -- just slow.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital arc of this book, all opinions expressed here are my own.
The Serial Killer’s Wife by Alice Hunter is the author’s first novel and I will definitely look forward to reading more of their work.
Beth and Tom have the perfect life, until Tom is arrested for suspected murder. Told between past and present, the story mostly centres around Beth and how she is treated after Tom’s arrest. It is an interesting angle, and honestly not something I’d ever thought about - how a criminal family member’s actions effects those left behind. The twist at the end definitely took me by surprise.
Overall this was an interesting, engaging read. It was well written with good character development. A solid four star read.
Well the title gives part of the game away before you start but what unfolds is not necessarily what one expects. I knew there was going to be more to it than a serial killer being captured but didnt expect the ending.
Really enjoyed this, had me gripped from the start.
The Serial Killer's Wife was a good book. To be honest, I wasn't very much attached to this book. Not that it had faults, it's just that I don't feel very devoted to it. As always I did learn few things from reading this, like how to be cautious enough in one's life and how people aren't what they portray us. The story was pretty much predictable to me. It did have some great twists but I didn't morally like it. Who knows, preferences differ. You might like it. Here's the plot to 'The serial killer's Wife'
It's about Tom and Beth Hardcastle's Life. They are the envy of the neighborhood for having a perfect marriage, perfect house and even perfect family. When officers knock Beth's house one night looking for Tom for an Investigation, the story starts. Everyone's been talking about the incident. That Tom could've been the killer. And Everyone does talk that Beth has some part in it. That Beth knows about what Tom did. Does Beth really know what Tom did ? Does Beth really know her husband ? After all, they are Husband and Wife till Death do them part.
