4.5 stars--ANCIENT ENFORCER is the third instalment in Katie Reus’s contemporary, adult ANCIENTS RISING paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is ancient dragon shifter and former general/enforcer Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez’ story line. ANCIENT ENFORCER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, several dragons rose from their sleep, and in the aftermath destroyed much of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, in an apocalyptic showdown known as The Fall, but in doing so revealed the existence of the supernatural world to humankind. Ancients Rising focuses on the recovery of the city, and the group of supernaturals and dragons who have come to call New Orleans their home.

Told from several third person perspectives including Mikael and Avery, ANCIENT ENFORCER follows the building romance and relationship between ancient dragon shifter and former general Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez. Mikael and his younger brothers had been asleep for hundreds of years but with their rising after The Fall, Avery Cortez is assigned by the Alpha of New Orleans, wolf shifter King, as housemother to Mikael, and his brothers Casimir and Ivyn, As the foreperson on the rebuilding of a part of the town, Avery is up close and personal with a number of the supernatural inhabitants and finds herself pulled towards the aura of her latest house mate but New Orleans continues to struggle in its’ recovery, and with it, a fight for power re-emerges as it sets its’ sights on our leading hero. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Avery and Mikael, and the potential fall-out as Mikael finds himself caught between head and heart; and Avery places herself in the direct line of fire to rescue the man with whom she is falling in love.

Mikael knows that Avery is his mate but bides his time in his approach to the woman who has captured his heart. Our heroine is oblivious to Mikael’s attempts at a slow seduction, and in this, she is the last to realize that Mikael is the man offering her a happily ever after. With another ancient forming his own army of newly born vampires, Mikael and Avery soon realize they are connected together at an even deeper alliance.

The relationship between Avery and Mikael is one of immediate attraction but Avery wants nothing to do with a long-term relationship. Mikael’s dragon knows that Avery is their mate but convincing Avery is a slow process in that life is about to spiral out of control. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and supernatural secondary and supporting characters including New Orlean’s alpha wolf King, and the phoenix Aurora; lion shifter Axel, tiger twins Harlow and Brielle, Lola,; half demon Cynara; vampires Justus, Ingrid and Claudine;Rhys, Dallas; dragon healer Greer; Mikael’s brothers Cas and Ivyn; Avery’s human brothers Anthony and Riel, and their father Shep, his wife Lindsay, powerful vampire Magnus; and dragonlings Hunter and Willow. King and Aurora’s story line is next.

ANCIENT ENFORCER is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and revenge; a story of power and control; tragedy and triumph. The premise is moving and edgy; the romance is encouraging yet intense; the characters are numerous, energetic and spirited. ANCIENT ENFORCER is a wonderful and startling addition to Reus’ ANCIENTS RISING paranormal series.

This is the 3rd book in the series and just as much of an adventure as the first two. We have met Avery before and we also get to see quite a few of the familiar characters in New Orleans. If you are looking for a unique paranormal with not only dragon shifters but just about every other creature you are familiar with-- this series is for you.

Mikael is a VERY old dragon. He and his brothers wake to a world in chaos. Avery is trying to help them get acclimated while they determine what role they may play in helping the Alpha of New Orleans.

Story lines continue through the books. There is a vampire problem that they are trying to get a handle one. Adorable dragonlings in this book as well.

I can't wait for the next book!

Ancient Enforcer is the third book in the Ancients Rising series - Avery and Mikael's story. Although each book can be read as a standalone, the characters and overarching plot carry through the series, so they're much better read in order. I love Katie Reus's world-building - shifters, vampires, witches, and more - this book doesn't disappoint in delivering romance & adventure.

Mikael and his brothers have been in hibernation for thousands of years. What happens when a dragon wakes from hibernation to life in the modern world? A world he finds that has changed and is in complete turmoil. Avery, a human, is helping King and others to rebuild New Orleans and has caught Mikael's eye. With super naturals and humans living among each other, there is a world of different characters as life has changed especially for Mikael and his brothers. With suspense, drama, a burgeoning romance, and a real page turner for paranormal romance readers, "Ancient Enforcer" can be read as a standalone, and is one not to be missed. 4.5 Stars!
**I was gifted "Ancient Enforcer" via NetGalley and leave my review based on my reading.**

I remember reading about the three dragon brothers when I read Ancient Enemy. The tension was already there, but this book, made me swoon and cry at the same time.

Being in Avery's shoes is not easy, the same goes with Mikael. Yet those simple glimpse they had was the sweetest thing I have read. As a reader, you can feel the depth of the emotions each of them had. I was surprised that Mikael was able to last that long.

I admire Avery. It is not easy endure like she did and she is one of those women that will show the world gender is not everything. Working with male shifters and under the most powerful alpha in the region, people look at her with respect and admiration.

The thing that made it more beautiful was the mating manifestation it was hilarious and so unexpected. I mean I got used to fire...but this? Ms. Reus has one creative imagination.

Each page of the book will take you into a roller coaster of emotions. From being silly, to getting steaming mad, from being so sweet, till you blush with how Mikael say some words...and those were the best scene in the book. There are more King moments...and "him" you got to watch out. The Alpha of New Orleans is someone not to be mess with and yet he yield his power like a gentle hand at the same time, a powerful tool like his sword.

Ancient Enforcer brings us how a man...or a male like Mikael found love in the most unlikely places. It gives us how he suffered and it shows us his strength. At the same time, it showcase that no matter the pain you have felt, when the right person comes along, that person will defy everything, I mean EVERYTHING just to make you smile, and to make you feel like you are the center of his/her world.

"His beast settled down in a way he had never experience."

Love is not just about quick emotions. Not about wanting someone like your next breath, not about wanting that person next to you everyday...it is more like finding the missing piece of your lost soul. The completion you would feel when that person is finally part of your life. Mates...soul mates. Mikael and Avery's book is another master piece that was beautiful created by Ms. Reus.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Ancient Enforcer is the third book in the Ancients Rising series. The ancients in question are dragons who have been asleep for thousands of years but have now awakened into a post-apocalyptic world where paranormals are now the superior species on the food chain. Warrior Mikael and his two brothers have been billeted with human Avery and her two brothers. Mikael soon realises that she is his mate but before he can claim her he must first find out why she has been drawn the attention of a dangerous vampire.

While I like this series there are a couple of things that niggle at me. First of all, the dragons, supposed all alphas themselves are happy to take orders from a wolf with no hesitation – that just makes them seems a bit docile to me. Who knows – maybe they’re still half asleep! Also, with this book itself I felt there was a lot going on in the background where things were hinted at but not fully explained such as where did both sets of brothers keep disappearing off to? And also the story behind the key. Perhaps these things will be fully gone into in future books. These points didn’t stop me from enjoying the book but I just felt we only got half the story. I do love how the series focus’s more about friendships and loyalty rather than material things but I wish King would man up and tell Aurora how he feels even though his new baby dragon Hunter – who is probably my favourite character in this book – might not be too happy at having to share his affections.

Mikael and Avery's story, a kind of friends to lovers shifter romance. Mikael awakes from hibernation and finds Avery to learn about the new world, realizing Avery is his mate. She is one feisty strong woman sending Mikael into the friend zone, their own pasts coming between them. If you haven't read the previous ones, the author does a good recap and you can understand what is going on, although I recommend reading them as they are very good. The characters are great, the world-building was very interesting, and definitely a dragon shifter series you want to read.

Ancient Enforcer by Katie Reus is former dragon general Mikael’s story after reawakening from hundreds of years asleep. Surprise to realize that he is drawn to a human in this new world is an understatement but one he handles well. Avery, a house flipper, is also handling this new world by helping to rebuild New Orleans. She is tough yet vulnerable too making her the total package for a great heroine.

Exciting story with a slower romance than sometimes happens in shifter stories it works so well for these two. They dance around their attraction, believing that the friend zone is best. However, their feelings are not to be denied, neither is Mikael’s dragon.

All is not well in New Orleans as the danger surrounding Avery comes nearer and nearer. This story has some twists that I was not expecting but makes for a thrilling read. Like many who follow this series, I was hoping King’s story. He does get a pet but not a love which is always teased but held at a distance. If I cannot have King getting his story yet, I will gladly take the wonderful ancient Mikael getting his. Fans will not be disappointed in this story since it is a surprising and compelling read with many glimpses of King to along the way.

4.5 Stars
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the first book I have read by Katie Reus. I enjoyed Avery and Mikael's story. I love a good dragon story and this did not disappoint. It had several secondary characters and I am hoping there are books in the works for them. Michael and his brothers live and work with Avery. She is the human helping them in a world that is aware of super naturals. I liked that there were different magical characters along with a couple of bad characters. It kept the story very interesting. Avery and Mikael had some challenges but when they finally told each other the truth about how they felt they were able to overcome them.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way.

Mikael, a dragon shifter had just awakened from a millennia long sleep when he and his brothers find a place to stay with Avery. She and her brothers are trying to help Mikael and his brothers get used to the new world they find themselves in.

King is the alpha for the territory that Mikael and his brothers decided to stay in and had made the arrangements as to where he and his brothers would be staying and working. Most humans know supernaturals existed and there in New Orleans there are humans like Avery who wanted to help. As Mikael and Avery spend more time together they both let their feelings show a little more. Avery is a little relationship phobic since her father was a total jerk to her mother and she doesn't want the same thing to happen to her in a relationship. But Mikael has some baggage from his past as well since his family had been killed a long time ago. He wasn't sure he wanted to let another female get that close to him again because he didn't want to be hurt again. Needless to say, they both had baggage that they needed to work through.

It isn't until Avery finds herself in danger that Mikael really shows her how much he feels for her. Sure they had a couple of moments but I'm not sure it would have gone anywhere fast if they hadn't been thrown together because of the danger she was in. Then as if the danger she's in isn't enough, a person from Mikael's past shows up and seems to bring even more danger with him. The twist this story took at that point was a good one though because it really seemed to ratchet up the tension and action in this story.

I loved how Mikael and Avery's romance took a little time to manifest. It was fun to watch them slowly give into their feelings and get to know each other even as the danger got worse for them but brought them closer. I really loved seeing another Dragonling (baby dragon) because they are just too cute. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more and more of them in future stories. All the different supernaturals in this series have been fun to get to know. You never know what new kind of supernatural will pop up next. I loved this story.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

In a world where calamity and horror have changed everything, those that survived have created a new order. But the strong are not always safe. Avery's innocence is in her love of family, honour to her alpha, and dedication to her job. And then Mikael with his brothers arrives and family becomes just that much larger. Will his perceptions from a time long past change everything? Will the evil that rises cause destruction for all? Will his enforcer persona overtake matters of the heart?

Ancient Enforcer is book 3 in the Ancients Rising series and another enjoyable addition to this series. Mikael is an ancient enforcer who recently awakened with his two younger brothers from thousands of years in hibernation. Since they were newly awake King thinks Avery is the perfect person to help them become accustomed to this new time. From the moment Mikael lays eyes on her he knows he has met his mate. I love how he tried to go slow with her but then realized he was in the friend zone so he decided it was time she knew who she belonged too. I loved Mikael and Avery together although I did find Avery stubborn at times they were a perfect match. As usual there is an enemy who threatens to destroy everything but with him brings someone from Mikael's past whom he thought was long dead. I can't wait to finally get King and Aurora's book which is next.

H-O-T, HOT, is the best way to describe the newest book in the Ancients Rising Series! Who knew a broody and intense Dragon Shifter could be the mate any woman would dream of having for her own. Mikael is different than many of the other shifters we have met so far, more serious, more powerful and more determined than anyone to make sure his fated mate is safe and HIS! Avery is sweet and a hard worker, she works with King to rebuild the city of New Orleans, one building at a time. From the moment Mikael, and his brothers, walk into her home nothing will ever be the same. The attraction between these two is immediate, as we would expect from mates, but Avery has been hurt by too many events in her past and has given up on fully trusting anyone. Mikael knows this but doesn’t try to convince her to commit to him, he just becomes a strong and steady presence in her life end by her side. He is thousands of years old, and after hibernation her is in a strange new world, and though he adjusts to it, he never loses his “old fashioned” ways of being the man Avery can depend on. This book has evils, battles, surprises and friendship throughout. I fell in love with Mikael and Avery’s brothers and hope they all get their own story! King is present throughout the story and is the string Alpha leader we have come to expect him to be, and I definitely look forward to his story coming soon! Overall, I cannot get enough of the Ancients Rising series from Katie Reus and I hope it continues for MANY more books!! Oh and...how can I get one of those dragonlings for myself?!

I feel invested in the world that Reus has built in this series. There are ongoing storylines and characters we see in each book that have you laughing and hoping for their HEA in the future.

In this book the couple is one I’d been hoping for after reading the first two books. Avery, a human that is working to rebuild New Orleans and Mikael, a recently awoken dragon shifter. He knows they’re a mated pair, but she’s trying to keep her heart safe. They also have to fight an ancient enemy that has designs in this new world.

Through it all the couple grow closer together, new characters are introduced and I hope more and more for King and Aurora’s story!

Dragon Shifter Mikael and his brothers have been in hibernation for thousands of years. Now they have woken to a world they don't recognize. With no where else to go, they are taken into the home of Avery, a house flipper who is busy helping to rebuild the city.. Though Avery has her reservations about these three new comers, something about Mikael intrigues her.

From the time they met, Mikael was drawn to Avery. He recognizes the attraction for what it is, but when bloodless bodies start piling up in the city, he is forced to turn his attention to the danger facing the city. Together, he and Avery need to face an enemy from Mikael's past. Mikael must risk it all to save everything he cares about.

Not having read the first books in the series, I felt a little lost trying to keep up with all the different characters and catching up with background in the beginning of the story. Once I overcame that, I thought the build up was a bit drawn out and moved slowly. However, once the action started, it was non stop. The second half of the story moved quickly. We learn much more about Mikeal's history and his character. While Avery was kind of grating in the first half of the story, she grew on me during the second half. In the end, I really enjoyed the story and am anxious to go back and read the stories I've missed in preparation for what is to come.

Avery was a house flipper before the fall and has valuable construction experience. She’s been working with King to help rebuild housing and make sure everybody has the shelter that they need as they rebuild New Orleans. When King asks her to take in three dragon shifters who are new to town, she is hesitant, but as she gets to know them she agrees and appreciates the help that they offer on her job sites. She notices the oldest of the brothers, Mikael, but thinks he’s probably more heartbreak than he’s worth.

Mikael lost everything thousands of years ago and went into hibernation. Now that he’s awake again the world has changed and he finds himself living and attracted to a human female. He can’t help the growing feeling of protectiveness he feels towards her however he also finds because she’s human she is far more vulnerable than he is used to. When a danger from her past emerges, they find they must work together to keep her family together while also exploring the attraction building between them and Mikael’s desire to claim her.

Mikael is protective of his family and those he holds dear. Despite coming out of hibernation he quickly learns how to maneuver in modern society, though admittedly the world is not quite as modern as had The Fall not happened.

Avery is sweet and strong. Working in a male-dominated field she learned long ago how to stand up for herself and how to get things done. As she welcomes the dragons into her house she helps to build a new sort of blended family among her own brothers and these dragon brothers.

As they get to know each other Mikael is sure Avery is his mate however he isn’t sure how to convince her of that fact as well as introduce her into the differences between a human male and a dragon male. As a result this book feels like a slow burn even though their relationship is building along the way. Because Avery is unfamiliar with shifter traditions there is a lot for her to learn.

I found myself quickly pulled into this post-apocalyptic New Orleans. Reconnecting with this group of shifters, witches, and humans was a great distraction from the present. This book came up in my reading list at the perfect time and was exactly what I needed for a little reading refresh. I love all the little connections in the background and particularly enjoyed watching King and Aurora continue to circle around each other. I cannot wait for their story, to see what is really building between them.

I adored Mikael and Avery! I'll admit that I normally wouldn't go for a dragon shifter story, but Ms. Reus has done such a great job of creating a world that completely draws me in. Mikael and Avery are perfection, and I just love how pure his feelings are for her. Lots of action and intrigue in this one, particularly with her father and former roommate. I love every minute and am so excited for King and Aurora's story!

*I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Finally Avery book! Katie Reus didn't disappoint! We have Amy is who is in charge of the reconstruction of New Orleans. King assigns Mikael and his brothers to live and help her and her brothers. Mikael grows attached and always needs to be close to Avery. There is so much action and drama, the story just flows together. I love how Avery and Mikael come together and she keeps putting him in the friend zone. Mikael finally steps up and wants out of the friend zone. A new threat comes back to haunt Mikael and Ozias bring plenty of tricks. All long forgotten dead brother comes back. Then Mikael and Avery get ported off to another realm and make their way back and take on Ozias. Along the way Mikael tells Avery she is his mate and they love each other! Overall, another great addition to the series and can't wait for more. So excited for King and Aurora book to come out. A one click buy for me!

This is book 3 in the Ancient's Rising series and it can absolutely be read as a standalone although I recommend all the other books in this series as well! Mikael is a former general who lost everything thousands of years ago. When he is awakened after hibernating, he comes into a totally different world that is complete chaos. He and his brothers are asked to live with Avery and her brothers. He knows he shouldn't want Avery, she is soft, sweet, and human. But he can't help how he feels and it grows every day. Avery was a house flipper before the world turned upside down. She knows what it means to feel heart break and to not be able to trust those closest to you. She agrees to take in Mikael and his brothers after meeting them because they seem lost in this world. And she can't help but fall for Mikael a little more every day. But when a threat emerges threatening to tear her world apart, everything changes between them. And Mikael will risk everything to keep her safe and claim her.

I loved this one! I was curious about their story ever since we saw them in the previous book, and this in no way disappoints! Mikael is definitely the alpha, protective shifter who isn't afraid to do what he needs to do for those he cares about. But he also has this sweet, soft side that I loved. Avery has been hurt before by one of the people that you should always be able to trust. And while she has a difficult time trusting people, it doesn't stop her from still helping them when they need it. And I loved that about her! Their chemistry is explosive but more than that, they have a great friendship. And I think that is why I loved this one so much! The side characters as usual are great! And I wouldn't mind seeing stories for both sets of brothers! Of course, now I can't wait for the next story!
