As an adult I found this book extremely interesting, even I have learned lots about some wonderful women in our world history. The diversity in the nationalities and times gives a perspective that teaches kids how everyone in this world can make a difference not matter the religion, color or nationality.
Fantastic introduction to 25 female leaders and similar to "She Represents" by Caitlin Donohue, but for a younger audience. Each "rebel girl" is introduced in a single page that gives an overview of the woman's accomplishments, accompanied by an amazing illustration. The information on each person is enough to catch the reader's interest and hopefully inspire them to look deeper into each leader's life and accomplishments. While the book does include a few women from other countries, the majority are American. It would be nice to see a follow-up book that introduces us to female leaders from around the world.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
An inspiring read geared toward girls, but even boys would benefit from the stories presented here. Each Rebel Girl is given a two-page spread. On one side is a detailed background with their birth date. Opposite is an accompanying illustration and quote. The artists are also extraordinary females from all over the world.
I was struck by how many of their careers or causes were sparked by an event that happened in their middle grade years.
*Sonia Sotomayor loved to watch Perry Mason TV shows growing up. It planted the idea to become a lawyer. Despite obstacles thrown in her path she achieved her goal and eventually became a Supreme Court Justice.
*Pat Summitt played hard as a child, always shooting baskets in the hayloft of her family’s dairy farm. Her skills led to becoming a head coach at age 21.
“Michelle Obama’s mother told her “If it can be done, you can do it.” She followed that advice and today she is known as First Lady, a lawyer, and author.
*Kamala Harris ventured out on the streets of Oakland, California in her youth and decided she wanted to help others in times of trouble. Our new vice president has done exactly that in her career.
Each of the 25 stories prove that believing in yourself goes a long way toward achieving life’s goals. Although the stories are short, they will certainly motivate readers to research more. What brings the book full circle are exercises in the back pages. There is a set of questions that ask WHAT KIND OF LEADER ARE YOU? A LEADERSHIP TRAINING section follows to steer you in the right path.
Overall, a terrific addition to the Rebel Girls series.
I love how diverse the subjects of this book are, and how there's a mixture of high-profile women and wrold leaders (Michelle Obama; Malala Yousafzai; Angela Merkel) alongside less well-known people, so there's something to learn for everyone picking it up! It's so nice to have a direct quote included from each of the women, as well as a short biography and gorgeous and varied illustrations!
There are definitely some women I don't necessarily think needed to be there (Queen Elizabeth I?) and I did feel like famous husbands sometimes overshadowed the women's own stories, but overall I really loved it!
I have yet to read a Rebel Girls book I haven't loved and wished was in my childhood bookshelves or classroom libraries. These books are treasures-excellent introductions to women and girls who are changing the world, or who have impacted our world already. Rebel Girls Lead boasts a diverse list of women from many different backgrounds and with many different talents. The illustrations are incredible, and the vignettes about each woman both introduces and affirms the desire to learn more. This will be a great gift for some of the rebel girls I know!
A vibrant and eye-catching style of book. This book lays out inspirational stories of iconic women. It's a really good mix of stories pand girls can find someone to relate to whatever their ambitions.
It is important for our children to read about women who have made a difference.
I had really applied for an arc of Rebel Girls Lead because I wanted to share it with my very own Rebel Girl, my ten year old niece . I wish that I was able to upload her stories and drawings of her very own versions of rebel girls inspired by the women that she's read about.
While there were some entries that had appeared before, I still think that the Rebel Girls books are some of the best things to have come out in this decade. With the incredible, brilliantly coloured illustrations, and the story-telling feel to the biographies, and being just long enough to be informative without losing small attention spans, I hope that these books find their way into many more young hands in times to come.
I especially loved the way that this edition focused on leadership. I just know that it will inspire more young women that just my niece, and watching her believe more and more in herself has been a gift. I especially loved seeing Kamala Harris and Stacey Abrams right there showing how Rebel Girls are making a difference right now. And the end pages? "Write your own story", and "leadership Training"? I wanted to cry with happiness.
For all the young girls, and boys, we want to inspire
Great short stories about women in history with a heavy slant towards modern day. I really liked the page where readers could create their own story and picture. I also appreciated the questions at the end of the book.
Note: I've downloaded a bunch of free, (mostly) random, pre-releases of books with the idea of expanding my range and helping authors get reviews. #netgalley
Wow. I love this book!! I read it with my daughter and got teary eyed multiple times just loving how inspirational it was. I want her to believe she can do anything, and here is a book full of women who have achieved so much. I loved reading it out loud and learning more about these strong powerful women. And I loved how they were all from different walks of life with different skills. Definitely recommend!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoy the authors and this book series (if series is the appropriate word). The art is beautiful and the choice of women's stories to include. I love the diversity of women - different generations, historical and current day, different fields of influence - there is something for everyone. What a gift for young girls to grow up knowing about and being inspired by incredible women.
My daughter (8) has been into the Rebel Girls podcast since it began and has all the books as well. She really enjoys the stories and the pictures, and frequently asks when another one will be coming out. She loved this book as much as the rest of the series, even though some of the stories are shared between the books (I would prefer they were all new, but that's just me). Keep the Rebel Girls books coming, please - it's great to have nonfiction about strong women that is appropriate for elementary kids.
My daughters (8 and 4) love the Rebel Girls books, and so do I! The pictures catch their attention and before bedtime they choose a person each, dipping into incredible and empowering stories without being overwhelmed. It is so important for our daughters and sons to read about women who have made a difference and I am planning to buy this book for my nephews as soon as I can. I also really loved the practical exercises at the end and when my girls are a bit older we will definitely use them for inspiration.
Thank you NetGalley and Rebel Girls for providing this ARC.
*Disclaimer: I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This type of book is always an interesting thing to pick up every so often. They tend to introduce you to historical figures that you may not have otherwise heard of and prompts you to learn more about them on your own. This book concentrates on women in leadership, prompted by the election of Kamala Harris as vice president in 2020.
The artwork is all done by female artists from around the world and I appreciated the diversity of the figures included. This book introduced me to several indigenous historical women that I had never heard of and would love to learn more about.
Overall I think this would be a great learning tool to share with children. My only gripe is that it could have been longer and included either more details on each woman, or listed more women.
4 out of 5 stars!
A huge thanks to the publisher for reaching out to me with a free eARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
The Rebel Girls books have been on my TBR ever since the first one got announced, but I have sadly never gotten to them yet. After reading this mini edition, I will have to make it my priority to read them all, because it's so incredibly inspiring!
Sure, reading this at 26 is also kind of depressing, especially when reading about girls younger than you, haha! But more importantly, most importantly, this book is empowering. Awe-inspiring. I have learned so much, and I am truly in awe of the power of these women. Their tenacity, their determination. Their strength. The things some of them have gone through... My heart breaks for them. But despite it all, they kept going!
I have already lined up some documentaries and movies to learn more about these amazing women.
Education is key.
Girls need to know that women like this are out there, and that they can do anything they want to do, no matter where they're from. This book showcases people from all kinds of upbringing, and from different countries, so it truly shows girls "if it can be done, you can do it".
Wonderful book, which should be used in classrooms all over, because for boys, this is important too! Show them what women can do, and teach them to empower women instead of knock them down!
Also at the end is a lovely little feature where you can write your own story, and draw your own portrait, so you can be in the book as well. Talk about powerful!
Speaking of drawings, all drawings were made by women all over the world, giving us a wonderful collection of art of all kinds of styles! A true joy to look at.
10/10 would recommend!
Five stars!
Twenty-five short, one page biographical stories featuring inspirational female leaders from Cleopatra to Kamala Harris. Each short, simple biography tells just enough of the subject's story and is accompanied by a bright illustration by a different female artist. Most of the women are somewhat familiar, but some names were unfortunately unknown to me, and led to me wanting to do more research about these "rebel girls".
This was the first Rebel Girls book I've read, and I am sure it won't be my last. I will definitely be gifting these books to all the "rebel girls" in my life. I an very grateful to Rebel Girls and NetGalley for the opportunity to read Rebel Girls Lead in return for my honest opinions.
My daughter has enjoyed the other "Rebel Girls" books very much so I was delighted to be able to add another to her collection. She devoured this one in a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed the eclectic mix of personalities, from Lady Gaga to Ruth Bader Ginsberg. There's something for every aspiration, whether you want to be a peace activist, a gymnast, or a supreme court justice. The book ends with a section where you can write your own story and some quizzes to help you to find your own rebel girl qualities. Highly recommended reading for pre-teen girls.
This is no different from the other Rebel Girl books in the way it is colorful, inspiring, and empowering, and even though I’m not exactly its target reader, I felt the message of the stories in this book deep in my heart and I wouldn’t hesitate to gift a copy of this to my young nieces. I liked that it tried its best to showcase women of different ages, ethnicities, nationalities, industries, and advocacy, and that the stories were written in simple language yet with great effect. All the accompanying art is gorgeous, and I thought each one represented the featured individuals well.
But my favorite above all would be the activity pages at the end of the book, especially the one wherein the reader can write their own story and draw themselves. Allowing that space can encourage little girls to believe that they can do and enjoy good things as well as help others, and that is important.
The Rebel Girls series is incredibly inspirational and wonderful. It is a series full of interesting and heartwarming stories.
Inspiring biographies of 25 women from across the globe. Each biography is short but detailed and suitable for a wide range of reading levels. Beautiful artwork for the portraits, from a variety of (notably, also all female) artists. As a mom of two young girls, this is a great way to show them what women have accomplished and what they are capable of too. Recommended reading for both boys and girls!
Make sure you wear shoes ladies, there's glass everywhere.
Within these pages we see powerful and inspiring stories of 25 trail blazing women. From Cleopatra, to Harriet Tubman and Kamala Harris. This little book packs a punch with beautiful illustrations from 25 women around the world - and each one is amazing! There is a one page summary one each of these wome, including a quote from them as well as which country they were born in really showcasing diversity and creating an inclusive book.
At the end there is a work sheet to answer some questions to figure out what kind of leader you are: Ardent Activist, Warrior or Stately Politician. There is also some Leadership Training which is wonderful and inspiring.
This book is marketed towards a younger crowd but I don't see why every woman shouldn't have one of their book shelf.
