This is Tim Weavers first stand alone novel and a completely riveting thriller. It has a cleverly interwoven plot that keeps you intrigued throughout. The main protagonist is Rebekah who travels with her brother Johnny to the remote Crow Island. The trip quickly becomes a fight for survival and Rebekah finds herself stranded there alone. Meanwhile Detective Frank Travis is looking for Louise Mason and must untangle the web of deceit and lies to uncover what has happened to her. In this action packed book the two stories eventually come together to solve this mysterious puzzle. Great book!
Bewildering rather than thrilling. I found this book very confusing because of the way Rebekah's story flitted back and forth between her current bleak situation alone on an island and events in her past. It also swaps between her story and that of detective Frank Travis searching for a different woman. I also found the ending convoluted and unsatisfying. New York is such a busy port that surely someone from a cruise or container ship would have quickly seen that she was in trouble if she'd put a big sign up! She was an intelligent woman, a surgeon! Will look out for books in Tim Weaver's David Raker series though, especially as he had a cameo in this one.
I'm exhausted after reading this!! So much energy written into the survival of being alone on the island to the ongoing thriller aspect that always continues relentlessly
In one way, this is a standalone away from Tim's usual David Raker series but there's a quick scene with David that will probably make people think this book could be a spin off from one of his cases.
Whatever... it was brilliant. Gripping and kept you hooked.
No wonder I always pounce on Tim Weaver books!!
Oh dear Tim, you have left me bereft. I have so enjoyed this book, I was so involved with Rebekah and her story, that now I have finished it, I feel lost.
I have read others by this author, but by no means all of them. I have always found them to be very good involving reads. This was no exception and I loved it.
The locations described and the characters were brilliant.
I think the emotions that one goes through reading it are very involving and at times I felt very sad.
However it was a great book and I loved it.
I have read all Tims previous books and I am a massive fan.
I Was looking forward to reading this stand alone book.
It did not disappoint. In fact it has been my favourite read so far this year.
Rebecca and her brother Johnny visit crow island. Johnny is researching for a book he is writing. The two get separated. Rebecca is attacked and left for dead. She has absolutely no idea why.
Crow Island is completely shut down for 5 months & Rebecca is stranded alone with no means to get back to the mainland.
Tims writing style is impeccable- his characters are very well developed. I was totally rooting for Rebekah. I had no idea where the plot was leading, but I couldn’t put this book down. The plot twist was brilliant.
I hope Tim writes some more stand alone books, this is probably one of his best books.
Hmm I'm definitely in the minority because I really didn't like this book at all. I love the thriller genre and the survival genre so I thought this was going to be a sure hit with me but I found it a really slow, sluggish read. It's difficult to put a main character on a modern island and make it impossible for her to leave. To pull it off involves an irritating combination of the character making mistakes or doing some quite odd stuff - lots of flashbacks, conversations with imaginary people, a dog etc. As a result, I found her character far too passive to carry main character status, coupled with the fact that she really achieves pretty much nothing and it takes everyone around her to solve the various mysteries.
I have seen this book described in many ways indicating that it comes across differently to various people. Indeed it is a complex tale with a simple setting ie one woman on an island.
I would describe it as a mystery thriller. For a good portion of the book, you have little idea of what is going on. Well neither has Rebekah.. That's the point .... for Rebekah to survive and find out the WHY!
Overall I enjoyed this and would recommend it but be prepared for the fear of loneliness and not knowing.......
Rebekah get stranded on Crow island after going along with her brother Johnny for company, only to be caught up in something far more than she bargained for.
Meanwhile Det Travis is looking for another missing person before he stumbles on the missing report of Rebekah.
Story of Rebekah surviving and how the two cases are linked.
Great read.
This is a very well written book. The author manages to keep you guessing right up until the very end. An interesting plot and relatable characters. You certainly want to keep reading to find out what happens. What a page turner!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for an advance copy of Missing Pieces, a stand-alone thriller set, mostly on Crow Island off the coast of New York.
Dr Rebekah Murphy went to Crow Island with her brother Johnny as he wanted to meet a researcher. She is now stranded there, having missed the last ferry before it stopped for winter, and Johnny has disappeared. As she fights to survive her big question is why.
I enjoyed Missing Pieces which is a tense, atmospheric thriller with no hints about the outcome. This meant that I had no theories, normally a galvanising part of my reading, but followed blindly what the author had to tell me and was still gripped.
The format of the novel takes some getting used to. It opens with Bek alone on the island, then slips back and forward from then to past events. It also switches between her and NYPD detective Frank Travis as he spends his final week on the job searching for missing artist, Louise Mason and then there is an unnamed woman who makes a few brief appearances. It is a heady, intriguing mix that offers so many questions and, initially, no answers. I must admit that I felt very thick reading this novel as I couldn’t put the pieces together or work out the links, even as the reveals start to come. If anything though, it fired up my curiosity and enthusiasm to get some answers. The solution is convoluted and slightly incredible but it was a tense, atmospheric and exciting journey, full of twists and turns, to get there, not to mention the number of times I fell for the author’s misdirection.
I like the protagonists in this novel, Bek and Travis. She is consumed by the need to get back to her children and he is consumed by the need to find Louise Mason. They are normal people with everyday problems and stresses and, somehow, it makes Bek’s predicament worse as she tries to work out who wants to kill her.
Missing Pieces is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This book has quite a complicated story but I found it easy to follow as it is so well written. Based around Rebekah, a mother of two who is separated from her husband, she accompanies her brother Johnny to a remote island to a meeting. Things rapidly go downhill as the pair find themselves running for their lives pursued by 2 unknown males. The chapters of the book move between now and the last adding more mystery to the story - Bek's one night stand of which she has little memory, the disappearance of a girl Bek's brother was dating and was with her the night she vanished - are they related to what's happening now? Trapped on the island until it reopens with no way of contacting anyone, Bek begins to doubt she will.ever see her daughters again but what's worse is she knows the men will be back to hunt and find her. A truly fast moving and gripping mystery that I felt was a little spun out the end but was still a riveting read.
This book begins with Bek who finds herself trapped on a deserted island with two hunters on her trail. Bek is desperate to survive and make her way home to her two daughters but the question is, why has she been targeted?
I found the first half of this book slow and found some chapters confusing as they are told from multiple characters points of view, including Bek, detective Travis and also some unknown characters. The chapters also change from present to past which was a little difficult to follow at times. I also struggled to connect to Bek but as the plot unfolded this improved.
I did find that the plot picked up and Weaver's writing style gripped me and I was desperate to find out what would happen. I also had no idea how the plot would unfold and all my theories were wrong. I really liked how complex the plot was and how Weaver tied all sub plots together. I also enjoyed how atmospheric the book was and from Weaver's descriptions I was able to clearly picture the island.
If you enjoy an atmospheric psychological thriller I definitely recommend this book! A huge thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unedited review.
Love a story on a deserted island. Love a mystery. I know this author is famous but it’s the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I often don’t pick up famous authors as I like new talents but this has started me wanting to read his back catalogue
Rebekah Murphy accompanies her brother Johnny on an October day trip to Crow Island; three hours by ferry from the mainland. Johnny is writing a book and needs to do research there. Rebekah thinks it will be the perfect opportunity for some sibling bonding. Little does she know what awaits them.
Injured, separated from her brother and left for dead, Rebekah regains consciousness to discover she's completely alone. The deserted island has closed for winter and the last ferry home is long gone. With so many unanswered questions and no means of calling for rescue, Rebekah faces the grim reality of her situation — she hasn't told anyone where she is so how can she be found? A sense of dread washes over her — she knows the island won't reopen for another five months.
The story unfolds through dual timelines of 'before' and 'now' which fit seamlessly together. As with the author's previous books, Missing Pieces is a perfectly paced read with an addictive mystery that keeps the reader fully engaged throughout. The tension-filled claustrophobic atmosphere is palpable as Rebekah searches for answers and struggles to survive on the island alone.
This book is an excellent addition to author Tim Weaver's growing body of work. I enjoyed it immensely and thought it was a fantastic deviation from his David Raker series. It does require suspension of disbelief on more than one occasion but the unexpected twists and turns more than compensate and are extremely gratifying. I was swept up, taken to another place and couldn't put the book down until I reached the final page.
This is the first book by Tim Weaver that I have read. Initially, I felt the story was a bit "bland." I didn't really know what was going on and felt that the book wasn't really going anywhere. However, as time went on I soon found that I NEEDED to know what was going to happen!
I felt that the plot was full of mystery and everytime I thought I knew who the culprit was that I was wrong. I like how the story jumped between different times and different characters.
Overall, I did enjoy this story in the end and it did eventually draw me in and kept me wanting more!
Thank you to Tim Weaver, NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Bek is a surgeon who travels to a remote island with her brother, They are attacked and become separated. Bek finds that she has missed the last ferry of the season and that she is alone on the island - apart from the man who is trying to kill her and she has no idea why.
Travis is a near to retirement detective who is struggling to find the murderer of a young woman before he has to leave the force.
Bek has to survive for months on the island, alone, if she is ever to get back to her children.
The plot is complex and ingenious, its fast paced and full of action - a true thriller.
When Rebekah decides to go on a day trip with her brother to a remote island that is only habitable from spring to autumn she thought that it would be great bonding time .
When Rebekah and Jonny find a injured man who they believe to be the person Jonny had come to interview all things change.
The stranger is not what he seems and tries to kill them both as Rebekah and Jonny get separated and Rebekah falls and hurts her head she doesn't know where or what has happened to her brother.
After a night on the island Rebekah realised that she has been let behind and now the island has closed until the spring with no way of getting to the mainland over hundred miles away.
How can she survive five months until the next boat arrives?
And will the killer return to finish what he started.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book.
I struggled with the format of this and irrationally hated the alias names but it all came together for me in the end. Hoping the Fiona issue is dealt with in another book!
A day trip turns a small island into a lone fight for survival for the central character Rebekah Murphy. Trying to piece together past events and memories to plan her escape and make sense of the situation makes for a gripping storyline. Detective Frank Travis works on his last missing person case, not Murphy, someone else, but he can unlock some of the secrets and between them the tension builds to a thrilling conclusion that keeps you turning the pages. Really enjoyed the ride and will definitely check out more books by this author.
This is by far the best book I have read in a long time. It’s well written, the characters are very believable , the plot is taut and leaves you in continual suspense.
Rebekah and her brother leave New York to visit an island 100 miles off shore in only to get stranded as the island closes down for the season. Someone has made sure they will not leave but the reason why is difficult to fathom and their lives are in danger.
Absolutely loved it!
