In this short book, a medical laboratory in Britain faces an annual inspection by accreditors. It’s part satire and part venting. The lab is overworked and understaffed. The inspectors are quirky, and I wasn’t sure whether they were corrupt or inept. It’s an odd book. I was never sure if something was supposed to be funny or weird or pitiful. But it wasn’t boring even if I was mildly confused the whole time.

I think it’d be funnier for people who actually work in labs. I thought it would be more universally relatable than it was. It needs some proofreading. It looks like this is the final draft, and it’s got tons of missing quote marks and other things.

I received a copy of this novella through NetGalley. I have to wonder if they want anybody to read this book. It’s not available at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, and I had to add it to Goodreads myself.

A wildly engaging and highly informative read! Who knew that the identification of clinically significant isolates of fecal, urine, and sputum samples could be so fascinating? As the author, Edie Watney Judd so eloquently stated, “Lift the Lid” on the mysterious and life-saving world of a Bio-Medical Laboratory Scientist. Your life might just depend on it!

Your Stools are Safe in Our Hands by Edie Watney Judd
I’m giving this book 2.5(round to 3 on Goodreads) Stars. I got this as an ARC from NetGalley. I learned some stuff about microbiology, but did you really need the drinking scene?
Rating: PG-13 for drinking and more
The whole story is okay to not great. The info I learned from this book saved it from being rated lower.
Formatting : 2 Stars for not great marking and few image captions.

As a nurse who has a secret passion for microbiology, this book was a fascinating find. I loved the way the author used humor to bring behind the scenes to the forefront. I agree that this critical science is often overlooked and misunderstood. I appreciated the author revealing what is happening behind the scenes. I have worked in busy hospitals and so many of these descriptions are spot on and great reminders to be patient and have realistic expectations with lab teams.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own, freely given.

I could not get into this book. I kept reading hoping it would get better, but it didn’t. Short read. The funniest part was when the inspectors who are there for an inspection of a lab, gets stuck in the elevator. Characters are not interesting at all. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the arc of this book in return for my honest review. Receiving the book in this manner had no bearing on this review.
