Excellent reading of the novel and accompanying revision guide.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an ARC of this book in exchange for my feedback.
I'm not usually a fan of audio books. I find it easier to read rather than listen, but I wanted to try something new. Wuthering Heights is an amazing book and this guide helps people to better understand the book. Not only useful for students and academics, but also for the lay person with an interest in delving into the book deeper.
This is a good version of a classic, and the notes are really helpful in an audio edition. I think the way the notes come after each chapter would be helpful for students, but a little annoying if one is trying to enjoy the story. I wonder if setting up the 'notes' chapters at the end in an easily navigable way would be a better option.
Really useful for students studying Wuthering Heights. I would really highly recommend this for any student, though it would make the text a lot more accessible for students who potentially have difficulty reading physically (e.g. dyslexic students).
There's a really good mixture of key information, as well as the full text, and I found it easy in an audiobook format to shift between the two and dip in and out of the different bits of information. Having sections on characters, themes, structure, and historical context provides such a well-rounded context to the reading and the inclusion of chapter summaries and key quotations was incredibly useful.
Your perfect guide to wuthering heights. Classics are a classic always. An extremely intriguing read, the narrator's voice makes it a double treat. It will be difficult for the listener to pause. The audiobook goes very systematically and is very helpful.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK for a free copy of this audible book in exchange of an honest review
Studying Wuthering Heights was a super detailed and helpful audiobook going through the main novel and giving chapter summaries and insight into the themes of the book.
This audiobook was ideal for when I wanted to listen and study the Victorian gothic romance book on the go and listen to the characters having a natural flowing conversation that isn’t two-dimensional.
For students in Leaving Certificate or studying this book for A-levels, I would highly recommend this book as I found it super helpful!
This audiobook has a 5 star rating from me as it helped me understand the classic book better!
Great narrators and audio quality! It felt a bit haphazard to have chapter summaries after every chapter as opposed to two sections of the audiobook, one being the book and the other revision/ analysis. But easy enough to skip through and go back to!
I would say that this is an excellent resource even beyond A-level (useful to me at Postgraduate level). It’s in depth and the narration is well-paced, which isn’t always an easy feat to achieve in study guides
A good study version with brief synopsis of first the entire book and then a chapter by chapter summary following each chapter, with the narrator for the book a different person than the narrator for the summary. I'm sure this will help some to follow the story, especially those who are learning English as a second language.
Depending on the type of learner that you are, listening to audiobook study guides can really help cement points and quotations in your head. I wish this guide had been available for my daughter when she was studying this text.
It would be more helpful if the sections had header names, eg Main Characters, Themes, etc to make it easier to study around a topic.
Thank you for the opportunity to download this audiobook. I accessed it while testing a future update to the NetGalley Shelf app.
This is an excellent study guide that opens up the complexities of Wuthering Heights, a novel which is too often restricted to a Gothic love story. As with the other Penguin audio study guides that I've reviewed, the critical material is at the start followed by the full audio of the text - exactly the way I'd structure it.
There is perhaps a bit too much dependency on Gilbert and Gubar's canonical 'The Madwoman in the Attic', and I'd hope that A level teachers widen the range of literature that students can have access to.
That said, this touches on many contemporary approaches to Bronte's work from the radical interrogation of patriarchy to the way it boldly touches on Victorian taboos such as quasi-incest and even Heathcliff's morbid interest in Cathy's dead body. It also covers all the standard A level requirements such as character analyses, narrative structure, genre and some brief context. I especially like the extended key quotations which draw attention to important points but doesn't comment on why: a useful tool for encouraging students' close reading and own interpretations.
There's a huge amount of material here that should stimulate deeper approaches to the book, and the audio-text may help students struggling with the formal language to engage with this rich text. Definitely an excellent adjunct to reading the book.
A fantastic accompaniment to the book, for anyone studying Wuthering Heights. In depth analysis, that would prove very valuable.
