Erin Kelly's "Watch Her Fall" is a captivating thriller that immerses readers in the intensely competitive and often brutal world of professional ballet. This book is a masterclass in suspense, weaving a tale of ambition, betrayal, and dark secrets that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
The story follows Ava Kirilova, a rising star ballerina on the cusp of achieving her lifelong dream of dancing the lead role in *Swan Lake*. However, her journey to the top is fraught with challenges, including a demanding and controlling father, a fierce rivalry with a fellow dancer, and a mysterious stalker who seems determined to sabotage her every move.
Kelly's writing is both elegant and gripping, capturing the beauty and grace of ballet while also exposing the harsh realities and sacrifices required to succeed in this demanding art form. The characters are complex and well-developed, each with their own motivations and secrets that slowly unravel as the story progresses.
What makes "Watch Her Fall" truly stand out is its intricate plot and masterful use of twists. Just when you think you have everything figured out, Kelly throws in a curveball that completely changes the game. The suspense builds steadily, culminating in a shocking climax that will leave you breathless.
Kelly vividly portrays the world of ballet, from the grueling rehearsals to the glamorous performances, creating a sense of immersion that makes you feel like you're right in the midst of it all. Ava is a particularly compelling protagonist, and her struggles with ambition, self-doubt, and family pressure are both relatable and heartbreaking.
"Watch Her Fall" is full of surprises, keeping you guessing until the very end. The middle section of the book slows down somewhat as Kelly delves deeper into the characters' backstories.
Overall, "Watch Her Fall" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and anyone interested in the world of ballet. It’s a dark and twisted tale that will linger with you long after you've turned the final page.
Really enjoyed really this Erin Kelly psychological thriller at the time - definitely puts a different SPIN on ballet (get it?!)
I found our main narrator interesting, slightly unlikeable and cold but none the less fascinating.
Watch her fall was dark, enticing and tense. Highly recommend!
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Always enjoy Erin Kelly reads that are well plotted mysteries perfect for the book club group. This one was no different and I particularly loved the world it was set in. Would highly recommend.
I really enjoy Erin Kelly’s books, right from her first novel onwards. This was an ARC that passed me by at the time due to so many other commitments, but having just reviewed her latest novel I came back to this one. I was also inspired by reading the recent ballet thriller Clara and Olivia and I was interested to see what Erin Kelly had done with a similar setting. The answer is that Erin has really brought to life the behind the scenes aspects of ballet, from the theatres and practice rooms to the psychology of the ballerinas themselves.
We’re introduced to Ava, the daughter of a very powerful man in the ballet world - Nikolai Kirilov is the director of the London Russian Ballet Company. Through Ava we glimpse the lives of the ballerinas and the demands their craft places on them mentally and physically. Most destructive is their constant desire to be seen and acknowledged, to be the best. This is a cutthroat world and it made me wonder what lengths some dancers are driven too in their need to succeed. There is then a separate portion of the book that takes us away from that claustrophobic world and for me this wasn’t as successful. There were plot twists but I’d slightly gone off the boil by then as the whole atmosphere set up so skilfully at the beginning was lost. This isn’t her best novel, simply because as a reader I was so engaged in her beginning, to find I wouldn’t be there for most of the story.
Having said that I think there are a couple of interesting characters here, plenty of intrigue and deceit. I just would rather have read the book I thought I was getting.
Watch Her Fall is a brilliantly written psychological thriller. I have heard so much about this book that I just had to read it. It is my loss that this is the first book by Erin Kelly. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to read everything I can find that this author is written.
I started reading this and found myself immersed in the ballet world. I was so captivated by this unique world, might be something to do with the fact I always wanted to be a ballet dancer too,
The storyline revolves around a performance of Swan Lake directed by Nikolai Kirilov, legendary director of the London Russian Theatre. Ava Kirilov, Nikolai’s daughter is due to perform the dual title role of Odette/Odile.
I was there with Ava and the ballet company totally.. Erin Kelly's characters are all brought to vivid life. Every one had their own distinct part to play. Not everyone is likeable they are flawed and noticeably so.
I loved the twists and turns to this story. I was turning the pages faster and faster as the story developed.. it's a dark tale that held me there, transfixed until I finally got to the last page. Then I didn't want it to end!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy of this amazing book.
Thank you SO much to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback. I read both the e-arc and a physical copy. I became a fan of Erin Kelly's books before quarantine because I checked out her rendition of Broadchurch's novelization. I really enjoyed her writing style, so I checked out another book of hers, The Burning Air, and thought it was a unique psychological thriller. So, that being said, I am on the lookout for all other books by this author. When I found out that this book was available, I was really excited! The cover + synopsis suggest a great read, and it reminds me of Black Swan, which I figured was a good connection considering past books I read from this author with crazy plots and characters.
This book is brilliant. I absolutely think that this author is one of the most underrated thriller talents on the market today. I loved the setting, on-the-edge of my seat plot, and the atmosphere. I really think this author has a talented range, not just doing the same thing over and over. Def will be looking for more from her.
Brilliant 😍 Absolutely loved it
After years of blood, sweat and tears, Ava Kirilova finally has the ballet world at her feet. But away from the spotlight, whispers backstage make her lonely and paranoid.
I've always heard stories about backstage rivalry in big companies, fighting for leading roles and supremacy but Watch Her Fall gave me a scary insight (I know it's fictional but I still believe things sometimes go wrong in reality as well)
Erin Kelly is a master of speechless deadly twists and this book is yet another proof of her talent
I started reading and expecting this ballet rivalry, passion and sweat and tears wrapped up in a story about the arts world and found myself sucked into a mirror world where nothing and no one is as they seem
I did not expect anything of what had happened. It is dark, twisted and beautifully plotted
I loved this intense and twisty thriller. The theatrical backdrop was right up my street but would appeal to those even with no interest in ballet. Highly recommend, thanks NetGalley!
Really good story which makes me slightly nervous having a daughter who enjoys ballet! Great read with good twists and turns
Lovely book highly recommended by a friend who’s advise I respect. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters resonated with me and people I have met!
I enjoyed this book, I knew there would be twists but I didn't expect how they turned out at all. I like the look into the world of elite ballet and how solitary and nasty it was.
A dark, intense thriller set in the complicated and over disciplined and controlling world of ballet. Echoes of films like Black Swan and the Red Shoes.thread the narrative.. A very enjoyable thriller.
I love Erin Kelly's previous novels so was excited to receive this digital ARC. I am not a ballet fan so I think this made it a difficult book for me to immerse myself in initially. However after several attempts I was gripped and found this to be a well paced and well written novel. Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review a digital ARC.
Watch Her Fall by Erin Kelly is the story of Ava Kirilova, the ballerina. She is to perform Swan Lake and will be both Odette and Odile, the black and the white swans in her father’s production. The storyline is very intense and captures the hard work and determination of the ballet dancers, as well as their natural ability to interpret the dance. Her father who owns the ballet company is a very traditional ballet master and everyone must dance to his idea of Swan Lake or not dance at all.
Then several events happen and her father dies, Ava falls and everything changes. The storyline introduces new characters who will play pivotal roles in what happens next before the story can move to its conclusion. Will the ballet company survive the death of the matriarch who has kept the company going?
Highly recommended
Do not waste your time reading the reviews just read the book. Honest, you will not be disappointed! Reading the reviews spoils the story and its no fun when you know what's going to happen! Highly recommended!!
WATCH HER FALL is a fascinating journey into the extremely competitive and obsessive world of dance. The author cleverly uses a ballet company as a backdrop against which she expertly weaves a chilling and gripping tale of deceit. The book contains dark twists and compelling characters to give a satisfying and tense read.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC.
Well paced, loved the ballet/Swan Lake parallels. Thought the doubling was a little too laboured, but enjoyed the characterisation.
A cracker of a book from Erin Kelly. I really enjoyed this book and I wanted to finish and not finish it all at the same time.
An intriguing mystery/thriller set against a ballet core, its controlling ballet master Mr K, its principal lead dancer Ava his daughter and a production of Swan Lake. The narrative of the story switches between the main characters, with each one of them giving us their interpretation of the events. This for me made the story all the better as we see how one series of events can be viewed differently depending on our situation.
This is one of those books at is hard total about without giving any spoilers away, so I'll just say that if you love a mystery/thriller, the ballet and enjoyed the film Black Swan then this books for you I love all three.
May thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a free digital copy in return for an unbiased review.
This book was utterly gripping with amazing characters and a super storyline. Erin Kelly has such an amazing way with words.
