“Purple Heart, Volume 2: Project Bluebird” by Éric Warnauts and Raives is a follow up graphic novel about a war vet who works as a PI.
This time around, Joshua is now working as a private investigator for a New York City law firm. He is sent to Hawaii to investigate a murder-suicide, which seems like an open and shut case, but as in the last story there are complex undertones which, this time, point to the Cold War.
This is a solidly written sequel that I liked better than the first volume. The art leans into the setting and is a nice touch.
After the war, Joshua went from decorated soldier to private investigator for an NYC law firm. For his latest assignment, he’s been sent to Hawaii to investigate a grisly murder-suicide. With the help of a mysterious local and an old friend, he learns the dark truth behind their deaths and finds the stakes are far bigger than they seem. The war on the battlefield may be over, but not everyone has accepted peace, and the simmering conflict is manifesting itself in new—and dangerous—ways…
A graphic novel Full of wonderful captions and equally wonderful artwork. Eye-catching and thrilling.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book in return for an honest review.
Rating: 2⭐
I really like the art and colours of this book and I do like a good thriller/mystery graphic novel but nothing about this gave me enjoyment.
I was intrigued by the cover and the back copy of this book.
its a government murder mystery, and at first I was digging it. I’m not sure where the story lost me, maybe it was the jump forward a few days in time,
maybe I was just having a hard time following along... but something left me wishing there had been more.
there was a point in the book where i was like, "that's it? i expected more mystery and action."
The artwork is fantastic and really drew my eye to the page and kept me moving to the next page, but the story... the story just lacked substance.
I think it has promise and I am sure there will be some people out there who will disagree with me on my feelings for this but I just couldn’t truly get behind this

Joshua is back for another adventure. This time he is sent by his boss to Hawaii to prove that their client's son did not commit murder and then dive out a hotel window. Joshua found out that there was strange happenings going on at the lab where the son had worked. Top secret experiments that were going off in strange directions. Lucky for Joshua, he had brought help out from New York City, so he got himself rescued and managed to pull off a win of sorts for their client. And he kept his girl in NYC happy this time! A nice edition to this series.
Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this title
This is the second book in a series, but it's not necessary to read the first one to enjoy this. Tough I wanted to read it. It's a classic detective story, set in 1950's mainly in Hawaii, and our detective is a decorated war veteran (hence the title.)
I really liked the retro-style artwork (gorgeous colors, beautiful city scenes) and took my time not to miss any details. Story is quick-paced and intrigues of the cold war is in place.
I’d recommend it to the enthusiasts of classic detective graphic novels.
Thank you to the NetGalley and the publisher.
Joshua is a decorated World War Two veteran and now a private investigator for a law firm. He is used to solving crime in New York but he is sent to Hawaii to investigate what appears to be a murder - suicide. Things are not what they seem and as he invesyigates a dark and dangerous activity is brought to light. Uncovering this darkness may cost him his life. The story is quite gripping and the artwork and colouring are good. It is a good mystery with well developed characters and just the right amount of twists, turns and action.

The artwork really stands out in this book! It's very detailed and catches your eye. The coloring really matches the tone of the story as well. The story takes place in Hawaii during the 1950s. A P.I. is sent to investigate a murder-suicide that leads to some dark truths being uncovered. The comic does a great job of capturing the feel of the era while dealing with some important themes. Overall, it was an interesting story to follow with good characters and writing. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good murder mystery.

I was intrigued by the cover and the back copy of this shirt little jaunt into a government murder mystery, and at first I was digging it. I’m not sure where the story lost me, maybe it was the jump forward a few days in time, maybe I was just having a hard time following along... but something left me wishing there had been more.
The artwork is fantastic and really drew my eye to the page and kept me moving to the next page, but the story... the story just lacked substance.

This is pretty good stuff. Reminiscent of pulp novels of the 1950s but mixed with the action/adventure novels of later eras.
Sometime in the '50s, before Hawaii became a state, a P.I. is sent from the mainland to investigate the murder/suicide of a wealthy white couple's son and his native mistress.
There's a decent story with some really nice art in muted colors that captures a sense of the era. I actually enjoyed this second volume more than the first (which falls more into the standard '40s P.I. mode). It touches on a few serious subjects that resonate even in today's world.
I liked it. Recommended for those who enjoy some retro action/adventure.
***I received a free digital copy of this title through NetGalley.
I did not read the first one and did not realize this was part two until I started reading. But! It does not matter, the story is okay even without the first part, you can read and understand everything that is going on, the artwork is beautiful, and personally, reading this made me want to read the first part even more. The story is interesting, the tempo of the story is great, I did not get bored at any part of it. The mystery of murder, good characters, I enjoyed this quite a lot.

I didn't realize when I chose this graphic novel that it was part of a series but really I was able to follow it without having read the first one and I think I might actually go looking for that one now I liked it so much. Gorgeous art, great story, and just overall enjoyable.
The story is a Hawaiian women and the son of some wealthy people are found dead and Joshua, a private detective for a law firm is brought in to find out why the wealthy son died. What follows is your regular murder mystery spy stuff from the fifties but well done and as I said the art is just gorgeous.
Really enjoyed this one. Though I will say the long book-like pages in the middle felt out of place but I got used to them so that's why the four stars.
