I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

This was quite a dark and chilling thriller which kept me hooked from the first page to the last. It had plenty of drama and intrigue and I would recommend

This book was everything I look for in a book. It was so exciting. The plot was fantastic. It really had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart racing. It was very well written and flowed well.

I don't know what is was about this book - I was hooked enough to want to read and finish it to find out what happens but also think the story was absolutely ridiculous. A lot of really ridiculous things happened and stupid decisions were made over and over again and it just made the story and characters unlikeable.

The Estate is a dark, gripping, intriguing thriller set in a housing estate in Ireland. I liked the change of setting, it was nice to see Ireland described in comparison to the stereotypical descriptions of America or England. The descriptions of the housing estate allowed the reader to visualise the setting, portraying it as an abandoned estate that is inhabited by a small minority of people who are just trying to survive.

The character development is good. Not awfully strong, but good. They are portrayed as manipulative, as again, they are doing all they can to survive.

The writing is good. It is edgy and intense, just enough to keep you intersted in the plot and the storyline! However, I would have liked to have seen a few more twists and turns to keep me really immersed in the story.

Overall, this book is a dark thriller that I enjoyed reading. It shows us just how unreliable life can be, you never really do know what's round the corner.

Against my better judgement I plodded through this to the halfway mark.

Set in Ireland, just after the recession,the story revolves around Beth, the only member of a house of five girls to still have a job. Two head off to Australia and I honestly can't remember what the other two did, but on the night of the farewell party Beth meets Jason, and suddenly they're A Couple. Jason has it al worked out – he knows of a house on small estate, south of Dublin in the middle of nowhere, whose owner would like to have a Presence. All he wants in return is the cost of the insurance. No rent, no money for utilities – nothing. Well, obviously it's too good to be true, and you know what they say about that.....

So Beth moves down on her own because Jason is committed to his job for another twelve weeks. He'll be down for the weekends, so there's nothing to worry about so long as Beth sticks to The Plan and stays within budget. What could possibly go wrong? Well, strange neighbours, things that Bump in the night, and Beth's increased consumption of the old vino don;t help matters.

I've just reached the point where Beth has had a rather unpleasant evening, Jason comes to the rescue, but then is particularly nasty to her. He leaves in the morning before she gets up, and then off she goes for her second session of meditation. We're then treated to a great long lesson on mediation and Buddhism but written in such an awful teachy-preachy manner I just can't take any more. I couldn't care less what happens to Beth, or Jason, or Weird Claire, or even weirder Dolan family. They can all fall off a cliff for all I care.

I wouldn't say this is the worst book I've ever read, however I will say it's dull, irritating and just plain boring.

A really dark and creepy book of neighbours with shocking secrets. I felt claustrophobic reading this. Full of shocking twists. A brilliant book.

This is a compulsive, dark and gritty thriller set on a rundown housing estate left to its own devices due to lack of money. There are twists and turns galore and overall there is a chilling atmosphere that underpins the story. Some of the character being enigmatic and creepy also adds to the thrill ride. It's full of suspense and is certainly bleak and eerie from the very beginning. It'll also keep you guessing as to whether our narrator is reliable, manipulative or simply a drunk spewing out their words. A psychological thriller that'll mess with your mind. Highly recommended.

If it sounds to good to be true…

We know that Beth Sheehan has a serious drinking problem. We know that it has cost her friends and relationships and that she is practically homeless. We know that when, on a night out barhopping, she meets the charismatic Jason, she thinks he will be her lifesaver. Not so fast, Beth.

Jason has a great idea. He and Beth can live together in a brand new house, rent free. The only catch is that she will have to stay there alone because of his job commitments. He’ll come out every weekend. Beth is excited, the house is gorgeous and she can work from home. They move in and Beth is alone in a neighborhood of half finished houses and empty lots. The few neighbors she has, Clara, Michael and the Dorans, seem to have problems of their own. Soon Jason staying in the city for weekends, Beth is drinking more to cope with her loneliness, and strange things are happening in the house. Are they really happening or has Beth’s imagination taken a dark turn?

Do not read The Estate at night or when you are alone! Part ghost story, part psychological thriller and all totally terrifying, The Estate raises doubts for Beth and the reader. Who can you trust? Who are your real friends? And, most important, what is really happening? Lock your doors! 5 stars.

I am a huge lover for a good thriller that keeps me guessing as I read along, this was one of those books. The atmosphere of the book was dark and eerie.

The character development throughout the book was great, it was a nice change reading about an estate in Ireland rather than your typical estate in the US or England or Scotland. I liked the change.

I feel the right from the beginning, it was a very creepy book which never gave any clues away, it kept me guessing right to the end. I kind of found myself not wanting it to end.

3-4 stars! This was a very atmospheric read, which was written in a manner that really connected to me! I found the character development to be very good, but maybe so running was missing just a bit, which made it to where I couldn’t give the full 5 stars! It was full of some good twist and turns, thrills, chills, and shocks! I would definitely recommend it to my fellow thrill lovers!

Didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would.
Felt that some of the plot was a little far fetched and a bit slow at times.

The Estate is crazy good! Gripping, dark and left me on the edge of my seat.

I enjoyed the Irish setting, the dark creepy scenes make this story. Wasn’t a fan of Beth but this didn’t take away from the story.

A fun read. Not totally what I was expecting, but my bad, I was thinking about another book with the same title but from another author. Anyway, I was glad to discover Liza Costello, she have a style and her story was engaging enough to keep me into it, maybe a familiar feeling of déjà-vu, but it was good! Worth reading!

A dark and uncomfortable thriller, Set on an Irish Ghost estate, the unfinished nature of the estate and the economic background adds to the book's oppressive feel and the undercurrent of fear running throughout the various characters' stories. There is an added complexity of a flawed, unreliable narrator, swimming along the boundaries of alcoholism which makes the story and other characters engrossing for the reader. Highly readable, I finished this in an afternoon, the pacing kept me hooked.

I wish to thank the publishers and NetGalley for a free ARC that enabled me to produce this book review of Liz Costello’s latest release. The Estate is a dual-timeline crime novel, with the contemporary timeline starting in the final throes of Ireland’s last recession. The initial setting is newly built but not quite completed housing estate where main character Beth, who is trying to put several career mistakes and years of hard drinking behind her, hopes to do some house-sitting. The double pressures of confronting her unhappy past and making sense of a crime committed at the heart of the estate eventually prove too much for Beth, though. Whilst the quality of Costello’s writing cannot be faulted, I found this particular novel of hers a hard read, mainly due to the many unlikeable characters and the very many themes packed into the pages of this book. Recession and poverty, obsession and psychological control, loneliness and familial tension, alcoholism and crime, are just some of the many topics packed into this book. I feel a concentration on fewer but more complex themes would have benefited a novel that makes huge demands on its readers.

Amazing thriller that all readers will love. I highly recommend this book it’s extremely fast paced but well written. The reader will immediately connect to characters.

A quick read - interesting character study of an impulsive, alcoholic woman prone to dysfunctional relationships that she continues to tolerate and has a definite mean streak that doesn't help her situation. She is the central character and the "mystery' is really secondary to her stream of very bad decisions. I actually read the book rather quickly just to see if she was going to self-destruct since she made one very bad move after the other while cloying to her abusive boyfriend. An interesting, and kind of unusual, read.

This was well written but unfortunately it failed to grip me in the right parts. I really enjoyed parts of the book but it lacked consistency overall.
