As much as I wanted to fall in love with this book, I found it somewhat lacking unfortunately.
The character lacked any real depth for me personally... however the story itself was well plotted and flowed well throughout.
I was expecting this book to have a bit more to it so was a bit disappointed with it didn’t keep me wanting to read more.
It is about Laura who wants to be an actress but unfortunately she has a few issues, when she was in a play she froze and could not speak.
It kind of deals with her as we go through this book.
I did finish this book but I am sorry to say I wouldn’t read it again.
A gentle read, sad and funny in parts, perfect bit of escapism.
A nice change from all the thrillers I've been reading recently.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book, this is my honest read.
Unfortunately this is an example why I don't read male authors writing female characters as a rule. I wanted to love this, but there was literally nothing keeping me going through it and I DNFd at 25% as lifes far too short to read terrible books.
Laura Cassidy has dreamed of being a star her whole life in order to walk in her deceased dad’s footsteps. However, so far it hasn’t worked out for her. When the local theatre company announces it has a new director and production starting shortly Laura is convinced this is her opportunity to shine and get her big break, but when she isn’t cast in the main role she doesn’t quite know what to do.
It’s not very often the main character of a story is not portrayed as practically perfect so to have a seemingly damaged protagonist was a breath of fresh air. However, I very almost gave up on this book at both a quarter through and halfway through as it was so scattered in thoughts I was struggling to really get into it. I feel like it would have been better if there was a duel narration to allow an outsiders view into Laura’s struggles and maybe even an actual diagnosis to compare her struggles to. I did believe that the portrayal of somebody struggling with their mental health and experiencing delusions could be accurate I’m not just sure it translated very well into a story.
I want to add that I think mainstreaming mental ill health into our media is really important and there is real power in normalising these individuals. But I just cannot appreciate this as one of those pieces of media, Laura stalks somebody and causes damage to property yet seems to not experience any remorse or consequences and I worry this is a backward steps in the challenge that so many people have been combatting over the last decade.
Laura has a strong voice and her character flies off the page.
The interactions between her sister and mother are wonderfully observed.
A very poignant book dealing with loss and identity.
There were moments in the book where I was laughing out loud . So relatable and vividly written.
