The war between the two neighbouring kingdoms, Emberfall and Syhl Shallow come to a head in this thrilling and climactic end to the cursebreakers series.
We follow Prince Rhen and Princess Harper in Emberfall as they worry about the war against Syhl Shallow and in Syhl Shallow, Lia Mara and Grey as they gear up to go against Emberfall. Neither side want the war that is coming but neither will backdown. Rhen is afraid of the magic that Grey possesses mainly due to his mistreatment by the evil enchantress who is back and is torturing him even more. Knowing that Lillith is back and back more than ever, Harper runs to Syhl Shallow in the hopes that Grey can help her and his brother, Rhen. But finds that Grey is no longer the Grey that she once knew but with a lot of persuasion, he decides that he will help her to destroy Lilith and hopefully decide peace over war. This novel is filled with political drama and ups the stakes from the previous novels in this final battle.
Harper and Lia Mara are my favourite characters within this series as they both embrace the strong female trope but in different ways. Harper comes from our land as such is used to our ways, so when she is thrust into this new world, she takes no bull from people who try to tell her no. Whereas Lia Mara comes from an upbringing within the world but although she was the first born, she was not in line for the throne from her mother until she killed her. Lia Mara wasn’t prepared for the life that she now leads but she overcomes that in this novel and becomes a great leader even with those who undermine her.
This thrilling tale comes to an end in this exciting novel that I will truly miss as I have loved being a part of the characters stories.
4 out of 5 stars.
This is the concluding part of a trilogy which follows a prince reclaiming his kingdom. There is magic, evil and adventure. I enjoyed hearing it from all four main characters’ perspectives. A fun read
This was a brilliant finale to a series! Loved how it all wrapped up, the story was engaging, the character development was good and I thought the ending was satisfying and it made sense.
Gorgeous, thrilling and really satisfying - everything fans would expect, really. I feel a little bereft coming to the end of this series but hope that Kemmerer takes another fairy-tale as inspiration and gives it a modern twist. Split narration on the audiobook would really well.
This was the perfect book to end such an incredible series. ACSDAL is one of my all-time favourite YA reads and I recommend it all the time. While AHSFAB infuriated me because of some characters, looking back, all the pain was worth it, because it all built up to this perfect book!
I cannot flaw a single element of this book. If you haven't picked up this series yet, then I beg you to move it up your tbr list, you won't regret it!
I'm so excited for Brigid's next book, Defy the Night, which comes out on the 14th of September!
A Vow so Bold and Deadly is the finale to the cursebreaker series , the story continues from the perspective of the four main characters Rhen, Harper, Grey and Lia Mara.
Two kingdoms and two brothers on the brink of war that neither wants.
I struggled with this book I found the storyline underwhelming nothing really happens and the ending is unsatisfying it left questions unanswered a kingdom still in conflict as well as some unhappy characters, its possible this has been done intentionally so that future spin offs can be written. In my opinion the 1st book in the series was the best and perhaps she should have stopped there.
I had such high Hope's for this and sadly it let me down. I could barely believe the ending and honestly if this series Carrie's on, I'm afraid I won't be reading any more books in it.
A Vow So Bold and Deadly is a fantastic ending to amazing young adult fantasy.
I part read and part listened to A Vow So Bold and Deadly. Regarding the Audio performance, I loved that they had different narrators for Harper, Rhen, Grey and Lia Mara. The narrators are Melissa Bayern, Kate Handford, Davis Brooks and Matt Reeves. I really enjoy the performance, especially Grey and Rhen voices.
A Vow so Bold and Deadly had me anxious throughout the whole book. I felt like I was a friend stick in the middle. Hoping my other friends would make the right decision and make up.
The way Brigid constructed the plot surprised me, I thought the book would go one way, but it went another. The plot is entertaining, fast-paced with great emotional moment and drama.
If you enjoy retelling, YA romance, fantasy than pick up this series in either E-book, physical or Audio format.
My rating for A Vow So Bold and Deadly is 5 out of 5.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bloomsbury UK Audio for gifting me a copy of the audiobook for review.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for the arc of this book!
well, it might have been a mistake to have had high hopes for this. i gave the previous book the benefit of the doubt and told myself i wouldnt judge everything until i read this, hoping for redemption, but man. this was rough.
i mean, if this was a book all on its own, completely unrelated to ‘a curse so dark and lonely,’ this is objectively a very good book. the writing is great, the pacing is decent, and the characters are complex. but i have to look at the bigger picture.
i dont want to spoil anything but if you take the characters from book one and compare them to the characters in this (and even book two), they arent the same. and i think omitting two vital POVs from book two weakened this series. there is sooo much back-tracking and explaining done in this because it was missing from the previous installment that so much page time is literally wasted. and for what seems like nothing in the end.
also, i have no idea why this is being sold as the conclusion for the series because there is still sooo much left unresolved. like, a new issue is literally added within the last chapter and all of the sudden the series is done and over? its just a very bizarre choice.
anyway, BK is still a good author and i wont hesitate to pick up her books, i think this series just went in the wrong direction and unfortunately suffered because of it.
So apart from Lia Mara being called Maria during the first few chapters, this was an enjoyable listen. I had read the previous 2 books and wanted to try the audio book for a change so thank you for letting my listen.
I was totally captivated by this third and final book in the series, loved it from start to finish and oh what an ending that was.
Thanks again.
I have to say I really enjoyed A Vow so Bold and Deadly so much more than I was expecting.
Let’s rewind a minute. I was a huge fan of A Curse so Dark and Lonely, it was a five star read for me. I adored reading a new beauty and the beast inspired book with a modern twist. Then the second book came out and I think it fell flat for me a little, maybe because I had hyped it so much after reading the first one? I’m not sure. So I was a little sceptical about how much I would enjoy the final book. I really do think Brigid pulled it out the bag, I really did enjoy it. I loved how she wrapped up the series. A perfect conclusion really. I have heard rumours that there may be another book in the series, but I would have to say that would be a mistake. I loved A Vow so Bold and Deadly and think it makes the perfect end to an overall great series.
An absolutely amazing, tension filled, stressful ending to the trilogy!
Lia Mara, Harper, Zo and even Freya are just such strong wonderful women!
I don’t feel like I need anything else from the trilogy, except maybe a Christmas in DC experience for the laugh factor!
I listened to the audio version of this book (an early copy through Netgalley). It was produced by Bloomsbury UK Audio, but this is the same production as the American version, so the readers all have American accents. I only mention this since it took me surprise when I first started listening. There are four actors and they each take one of the main protagonists. All the voice actors are distinct and with a good range of expression. Personally I would have swapped the two female actresses around, since I envisage Lia Mara as the more mature of the two heroines, but this wasn′t a huge distraction.
Regarding the book itself, I liked that the action came back to Emberfell and returned to the beginnings of the story. I also appreciated that both sides tried to find a way to get to peace even as they manoeuvred to find advantage in the coming war. After the setup of the first two books the relationships between the characters (not just the four main ones) evolved, and in ways that made sense given their backgrounds. Swapping between the characters let us see their motives, and again the exploration of motives extended to others, including a brief foray into the villain′s story. I always appreciate a story where actions don′t come out of left field, and where people do communicate. Although the plot reached the conclusion that has been indicated for a while, there were enough surprises to keep everything interesting. I found the story itself an excellent conclusion to the trilogy.
A Vow So Bold and Deadly is the third and final book in the Cursebreakers trilogy and to be honest although i have given it 4 stars it was my least favourite book out of the three books. The first half felt really slow and honestly i put it down and didnt want to pick it back up but im glad that i did as the second half made the story. Really love the writing style of this author and i loved the ending. A trilogy thats fast paced and really worth picking up.
The final of Bridgid Kemmerer’s Cursebreaker trilogy was a highly enjoyable read.
As a stand-alone YA fantasy it’s well fleshed out with complex characters and a great plot. However, as the resolving episode of a much loved series it feels compromise heavy, the ending was a little disappointing - a bit like the story hasn’t unfolded so much as been shoehorned in order to give all the characters a ‘sort of’ happy ending.
That said, this was still a great read, the writing was spot on and I loved the characters. Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advanced audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was the perfect end to a great series. Action packed from beginning to end, with a fabulously evil villain, and some surprises thrown in. Pleased that Harper’s CP was more acknowledged in this story. There is clearly still room for this series to continue if it was asked for. I have a secret yearning for Nola Verin to try and overthrow her sister and later imaginary stories and no matter how well this story ended I still ship Harper and Grey. There, I’ve said it. I still see little imaginary yearning hearts above them both!
I continue to love Brigid Kremmerer's work. She's a master-writer and the depth with which she crafts this story and characters is astounding.

I'm feeling an overall sense of satisfaction with where the series has left readers and the latter part of the reading journey was incredibly fulfilling. Some of the middle journey didn't always keep me fully engaged.
The two factions of this story were really pitched against one another at the end of the previous book with the queen of evil in the middle. I appreciated the stories on both sides of this but what has been hugely interesting to me has been my own feelings across the series as I've gravitated from one set of characters to another in terms of loyalty. I wanted to stay in Grey's crew and had to remind myself to care about Rhen and Harper. I do feel like Harper's character has faded a little across the series. Lia Mara still left me feeling a bit ambivalent.
Things I enjoyed about this installment included the strategy, the uncertainty that characters had of one another, healing of old hurts and reconciliations. It felt good to complete the series.
This was an audio listen and I enjoyed the narrators, the atmosphere and the general vibe of the book in this format. There was an early slip up with one narrator saying 'Lia Maria' instead of Lia Mara a few times, but it didn't get repeated more than twice.
Readers new to the series will get to power through the three books and I think this will be a great binge.
Thank you to Bloomsbury Publishing for this audio review copy.
Before I started I wanted to say I know that Rhen did wrong but I can't help but hope he comes out on top!
Anyway here we are back in the world of the upcoming war of Emberfall and Syhl Shallow. Aka the war of Rhen and Grey. With that horrid woman Lilith seemingly to be controlling a lot! (Hope she dies!!!!!)
I won't say anything about the plot (apart from I really enjoyed it!!) but my feelings are all about my love and frustrations about the characters! Let me just make it clear that these are frustrations because of my own flaws and I'll go into that further down!
So you know that I am mildly obsessed with Rhen but I am more obsessed with Rhen being with Harper. However, I really didn't like Harper for some of this book and I think it stems from my love of Rhen!!
What is it about the females in this book that makes me not like them?! I didn't warm to Lia Mara in book 2 and I can't really say I did here either but I did admire her strength and how she wants to rule. Gaaaah, I hate not liking characters.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Grey but I lived for the chapters of Rhen and Harper, I just wanted them to be happy after all his troubles, I mean the man lost nearly everything! It sounds really bad but Grey and Lia's chapters, I couldn't wait to be over so I could read more about Rhen!
So as you can probably tell, my love for Rhen has clouded everything about this book!!!! Curse the author for making a totally flawed character and making me love him which makes me so biased that everyone pales in comparison!!
That cannot be the end though, can it?!!! Do I sense more coming from this world?!
This series had me hooked from the first sentence, kept me enthralled with mysterious curses and fanged creatures lurking in decadent castles. But throughout the series my largest gripe has been that the multiple perspectives, and therefore multiple voices, all merge painfully into one. Luckily, I like all of the characters and until this point I just made careful note of the chapter headings to confirm the narrator, but at this point with increasingly shorter chapters it's just taking some of the fun out of it.
This final instalment in the Cursebreakers trilogy finds us grappling with Grey, the true heir, and Rhen - the current heir, crushed under the thumb of a sorcerous. The war between two rival Kingdoms drives the story, but ultimately not a great deal happens as we progress towards an inevitable battle, which never unfolds.
That's the trouble with this book: whereas before the only problem was the merging of voices, now we have additional problems. Everything is slow to progress and then wrapped up in the blink of an eye. That, combined with a tenuous link at best on what each character even wants to happen just left me feeling like this story was a mad rush to the finish line with no real consideration of what readers deserve to see, in detail, after showing dedication to the series three books in.
Sadly not the conclusion I was hoping for, and equally not the fun guilty pleasure I had come to expect from this series either.
