This ended up being a DNF for me unfortunately it was just not the book I hoped it to be, but I am excited to read more from the author!
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
A fun summer read with great characters and and enjoyable plot. I found this to be exactly what I needed at the time.
Fun, flirty and a little sexy, this is a story to make you laugh and smile.
Ryan and Kara's relationship was inevitable but proved to be a quick and easy read.
This was a fun and flirty romcom that had me giggling away. The chemistry between Ryan and Kara was obvious from the start and we all knew where the story would lead. I loved the highs and lows of their relationship and learning about the history they both shared. Overall a fun, easy listen that brought a smile to my face.
Who doesn't love a book that has the word bookish in the title? I am a massive fan of books talking about books and this one was no different.
It was definitely a cute rom-com. You had the enemies to lovers trope, as well as exes to lovers. The one thing I did not like about this book and this is a massive spoiler here is the cheating element. Some might not see it this way, but to me that is definitely what happened. I am all for tension and secrets but never that. For this I marked down the book.
The characters were ok as well, I like Kara, she was fun and quirky, I also liked Ryan the male MC until the end and that is saying something. There chemistry was actually really good and the witty banter between the two was good and easy to read.
Overall this was an ok book, as I said I marked it down massively due to the cheating element otherwise it would have been a much more enjoyable read for me.
This was my first read from Kate Bromley and was a very cute and very fun story.
It kept me interested throughout and i would definitely recommend for fans of the genre
This is a cute little enemies to lovers / second chance romance story. I liked the fact that the main character was a writer too and that we got to follow her writing process during the book, even gettting to read parts of the historical romance she was working on! The parts about bookstagram was kinda surreal to read about, but very realistic. The witty banter throughout generally made it a fun read but I found the character of Ryan very unlikeable, especially after the major twist in the middle, which kind of ruined all his credibility for me. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this! Love a solid enemies to lovers/second chance romance. I loved the characters personalities, banter, humour and chemistry so much. Felt very polished and literally gave me butterflies multiple times.
5⭐
Well what can I say about this book? I devoured the entire story as I simply couldn't put it down. The characters and the plot captured my imagination and I was living my best life in the company of these characters I would like to now consider as friends. It's pure joy from start to finish.
Oh I was so enjoying you up to the point it was revealed Ryan was cheating and ew. The fact Maggie basically dismissed it, for me, is not in keeping with how a good friend would react. Kara was effectively gaslit by her own friends into thinking Ryan was her one true soulmate. Which granted she was, but at the detriment of another woman who was written in only to be a roadblock.
This was a great and very relatable book - it was exceptionally cute and light-hearted, I could feel myself swooning so much.
I usually find bookish people within books quite cheesy, and although there was some in this, for the most part it was incredibly enjoyable and able to overlook that cheese. (Have I said cheese enough yet?)
I did find there was a little over-explanation about Bookstagram, but that context is important to those readers who pick this book up on a whim and have no idea such a heaven exists. And honestly, that's my biggest gripe. But I see and understand how vital that is to readers who didn't know it existed or how it works.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book from start to finish, and was witty throughout. The humour was perfect for me. The storyline was cute and would have maybe liked their stage of being enemies a little longer (but I adore an enemies to lovers plot, so take that with a grain of salt). Either way, it was really well done. The story, the humour, everything, perfect - loved it.
I'm also not too much a fan of baby / marriage epilogues but this had me absolutely squealing with how adorable it was.
Why has it taken me so long to read this one! I really enjoyed it. It made me laugh, swoon and made my heart hurt. What a ride. I loved the mix of tropes and its made me want to read a historical romance which I've avoided so far. What a great debut. Can't wait to see what Kate Bromley comes out with next
I’ve had a bit of a book slump lately, struggling to want to read and I can definitely say this book fixed it for me. I think I just connected with Kara (and most the other characters from the start, how could you not fall in love with Ryan. this book was really cute, full of emotion and heart, really reminded me how I should listen to it more often. Overall, this is a fun and charming read that will leave you with a smile on your face and a happy heart.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This was a great book!
Having read a few books in between the normal of thrillers and Crime this was a welcome break from the norm.
A funny novel with relatable content that gives a peak into the lives of authors and deadlines.
Very funny novel and will look at others from the author
What a truly lovely second chance romance story from Kate Bromley. So good that it’s hard for me to believe this is her first novel.
I really enjoyed Kara and Ryan’s love, hate relationship, and aside from the part where I really wanted to kick Ryan very hard in the gonads (when you read it, you’ll know exactly which bit), I did overall find him quite swoon worthy and I particularly loved the grand romantic gesture (and the not so grand little ones too!).
Particular parts of the book that I enjoyed were the nods to Bookstagram that Kate included and the fact that the main protagonist of the story was a successful romance writer. I loved the sections of the book where we got to read the historical romance that Kara was writing. Almost like we got two novels in one and it was great to see how that ‘fictional’ story intertwined and reflected what was going on in Kara’s own life.
The second half of the book was set in Italy and I felt like I was literally transported to Rome. Despite having never been there myself, I could picture it quite vividly and it’s definitely now on my list of places to visit!
Also, for any dog lovers out there, and those who particularly like books with dogs in them, this book has a gorgeous canine character, a Bulldog, who goes by the name Duke, who is just adorable!!
Overall a fantastic debut novel that I could not put down. I will be eagerly awaiting Kates next book, out in early 2022!
Really good book it had everything romance, humour and sad bits but very enjoyable.
Kara & Ryan fell in love 10 years ago unfortunately they parted. Then 10 years later they meet at a party will they rekindle their love. It seems fate is about to happen again. Kara is a writer but is having difficulty with her latest book will she finish it.
It was a fantastic read and really enjoyed the romance in the book and the funny bits as well.
I REALLY wanted to love this one, and it just didn't impress me much. Firstly, the good ...
I love the descriptions of books and bookish things. I love the way our main character was writing a historical romance so not only was I getting to read a contemporary enemies to lovers I was ALSO reading a regency romance (something I haven't read before) I loved the way our main character was happy in her life and with her choices and her relationship with her mom was something I could really relate to.
Unfortunately there were a few things that pushed this book down and down in my rating and by the end I was completely bored. Firstly, I really didnt like the flippant mental health comments, such as I bet theres an app that will translate a suicide note into italian. This is such an outdated thing and I dont think its needed in a modern book. Also about 80% in something happened (no spoilers here!) and it just ruined the plot for me. Its a trope I personally hate and after that I kind of skim read to get it finished.
I will however give this author another go as I believe that the writing style was pretty strong despite my wider issues of the book.
4.5 stars!
This book hits a soft way for me personally. I don’t know how to explain it as I don’t know myself what exactly but I loved this book and also feel kinda sad reading it.
I don’t understand why this book isn’t getting enough hype as this is a great contemporary romance. I love enemies to loves trope and highschool sweethearts/ college romances, bad timings, meant to be / not to meant to be at a certain time are just my type.
Kara and Ryan meet at their friends wedding however it’s not the first time they meet. They are in fact ex lovers who dislike each other because of their bad history/ complicated past. As the story unfolds, they start getting closer and discuss how they fell out in the past and try to sort out. However, Kara finds out Ryan is hiding a huge thing from her then they fall out once again. Will Kara forgive Ryan once again and rekindle their romance or do they never see each other again?
Definitely a must read contemporary romance who are a fan of enemies to romance, book talks, second chances with witty banters.
I totally get Kara’s reactions and I do feel personally attacked as I adored Ryans character so much that it hurt me so I understand how hurt Kara must have felt. But at the same time I do get Ryans point of view as to why he did what he did. It hurt me most to know they both love each other so much but because of unfortunate timings and events they kept falling away from each other.
As mentioned above this book somehow hits differently from every romance books I have read so far. I have certainly laughed and cried reading this book and I have enjoyed it more than I had expected.
