Tony has always looked out for his younger brother, Nick. So when he's called to a hospital bed where Nick is lying battered and bruised after a violent sexual assault, his protective instincts flare, and a white-hot rage begins to build. As a small-town New England lawyer, Tony's wife, Julia, has cases involving kids all the time. When Detective Rice gets assigned to this one, Julia feels they're in good hands. Especially because she senses that Rice, too, understands how things can quickly get complicated. Very complicated.
The author has done an amazing job at creating a who did it book full of twists and turns that keeps you guessing. The book is hard-hitting at times and can be graphic, so if what is described in the description is a trigger for you, this may be one to avoid. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
Is looking out for family all it’s cracked out to be and is there a price that might be too high to pay? This domestic thriller poses those questions and takes the reader for a wild ride!
Wow, this was the best novels I’ve read in a long time! I was honestly not expecting it to be this good. When I saw the cover and read the description, I though, “OK, I’ll give this a go, why not?” But oh! Was I surprised! This was excellent - the kind of book one doesn’t forget. It presented an intense depiction of how one’s life can unravel; how certain actions and reactions can spiral out of control, damaging the lives of several people both directly and indirectly, both now and in the future. I loved the writing, the pace, plot, and all the characters. The whole thing was fantastic. Hats off to the author! I will absolutely be recommending this.
For a debut novel this is really excellent. It’s a hard subject to read about, let alone write about and with such an authentic feel about it.
Nick has been raped, and reports it. His brother Tony, who has looked after him like a son, is incensed about the incident and wants to find ways to sort it all out for his brother, even if this means doing something he will regret. Julia wants to look after her husband and brother in law but knows how the law works, and Tonys way isn’t the way to go.
A powerful read, that is at times uncomfortable to read about, but it has a grim realism. It takes the reader through all the different stages: the victims terror, self loathing and trying to find ways to cope with what’s happening to him and his family. The fall out that comes to families, the recriminations and the new way - trolling on line, judgement being made before the facts are know. I don’t know if I enjoyed this or not, but it’ll certainly stay with me. And an unexpected ending.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
