I absolutely love Gillian McAllister. Superb story, great characters, enough suspense and drama to keep you entertained. This is one book you will not want to put down!
Fantastic thrilled fast paced I enjoyed it so much this book kept me guessing from start too finish this is worth a read
A good read about how far you would got to protect your family. Lots of good twists and turns, but a whole host of unlikeable characters made it a bit of an odd read for me!
You know when you want to like an author because so many other people do, so you keep persisting with their books? Unfortunately, this is me with Gillian and I think it’s time to accept defeat; her books just aren’t for me.
I love being given the opportunity to update our school library which is a unique space for both senior students and staff to access high quality literature. This is definitely a must-buy. It kept me absolutely gripped from cover to cover and is exactly the kind of read that just flies off the shelves. It has exactly the right combination of credible characters and a compelling plot thatI just could not put down. This is a great read that I couldn't stop thinking about and it made for a hugely satisfying read. I'm definitely going to order a copy and think it will immediately become a popular addition to our fiction shelves. 10/10 would absolutely recommend.
I have read a few books by this author and loved them all. The story had me hooked from the beginning. I was excited to how the novel would end and I wasn't disappointed. Would recommend to a friend.
This is a powerful intense read. This book has complex characters. The plot is fantastic.
This book is cleverly written.
Loved it
I really enjoy Gillian McAllister books and this is no exception. Following a deadly car crash in Italy, Frannie buries a man’s body determined to cover it up. Upon their return to England, the lies that they all have to tell start coming undone and the trouble they thought they had covered starts to catch up with them.
A really enjoyable read, gripping and dramatic, everything I expect from the author.
Finally got around to reading this book, i enjoyed the characters all being family and the dynamics between then all.
Wow what a book. Beautifully written, tense read that I couldn’t put down. I loved the characters and how invested I became in the story.
McAllister is one of those authors that I await new titles from impatiently. Her execution of high concept is just so good, so enjoyably twisty and yet character driven. Love it.
I read this book in one sitting it was so gripping. Following 3 siblings who are extremely close we see them cover for one when she commits a crime.
I loved that nothing was as it seemed in this book with twists and revelations right to the end. I loved the short chapters which drove the story on and the multiple points of view.
I would definitely recommend this book.
The Queen of the fabulous premise this one is another goodie from McAllister. I am always fascinated by the question at the heart of the novel and this one is no exception. Would recommend.
That night is one of those novels where you are given the facts of what happened at the beginning and then the story jumps to an unknown narrative in the present.
Drip by drip we are fed the whole story and the consequences of their actions on that night.
I really enjoyed the way this was written - although you were told the events you were never quite sure what had happened 100% so there was always some doubt in my mind about Frannie’s actions and motive and what Cathy and Joe were covering up.
The author has a way of drawing you in fully to the story as if you’ve living it with the characters and you can feel every wrong decision made and that waiting that must be fully encompassing when you are just waiting to be discovered.
I’ve read all of Gillian Mcallister’s and I do love the ideas she comes up with for her novels. This one however, didn’t quite grab me as her other stories, just a little weak.
A family holiday in Italy, a dramatic event happens, you then follow the fall out from multiple perspectives.
I wasn’t a massive fan of the way it was written, it was a little slow and seemed to be dragged out a bit.
Absolutely not a terrible read, it just disappointed in comparison to her other books, which is why I give this 3.5/5 rounded down to 3/5.
A very intriguing thriller and one that I’d seen everywhere so was really grateful to be given a copy to review.
Unexpected but great
Thanks to the publisher for the copy via Netgalley
We would do anything for family wouldn't we? That is the main message or more, the main question of this book, and lets the reader wonder why they would do for their sister. Gripping read, recommended.
Ooof this was a very tense, gripping read and kept me hooked like all her other books have. This was a fast paced read but I felt the book was too long overall and could have been much shorter. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book!
Unfortunately I really struggled to connect with this book and after multiple attempts have had to mark as dnf.
Tense thriller that centres on the unravelling of a family in the fallout of a horrific incident…
Gillian McAllister is an author that continues to go from strength to strength with her brilliantly plotted thrillers and her top tier concepts. That Night is another example of how accomplished she is within the genre, whilst also pushing boundaries and providing readers with something that is uniquely a McAllister novel. I was immediately hooked into the plot of this novel, but I found that the slow unravelling of the aftermath of the initial incident and the pulse-pounding impact that it had on the three siblings central to the narrative, was what kept me engaged and prevented me from pressing pause on the audio. McAllister expertly weaves family drama, relationship tension and psychological torment with taut revelations, breathtaking cover-up scenes and an unrelenting sense of spiralling out of control. The wonderful blend of human drama and intricate criminal plot reminded me of Lisa Jewell and her exceptional string of unputdownable novels. McAllister can similarly create a cast of characters that you genuinely care about and want to continue to be engorged on their interactions, whilst also being hooked on the plot and remaining desperate to know what happens. This powerful blend of elements is a true skill and is certainly something that makes me return to an author’s work. That Night continued to build to an incredible, unexpected climax that was completely satisfying to consume. However, the journey to get there was just as fascinating. I loved the complex relationships between Cathy, Joe and Frannie. There’s a real sense of their bond at the outset, but the gradual unwinding of the binds that hold them together is utterly compulsive reading. I continually asked myself what I would do in their situations and the moral dilemmas at the heart of the narrative had my stomach churning. McAllister really captures the individual personalities of each of the siblings and I really felt like I got to know them. This made the development of the plot all the more riveting, as black and white emotions or reactions to events began to fade to shades of grey as I came to relate to or like them more. I loved how this played out against the multiple revelations and final conclusion to the story.
The audiobook is really well presented and narrator Amrita Acharia really imbues each character with their individual identity. This made it easy to follow which character I was listening to and helped to relay both the tension of the plot and the intricacies of the human relationships that underpinned it. The scenes where the siblings try to cover up the initial incident are brilliantly narrated and I listened with my heart in my throat at parts. The narration is transporting and I really felt the rollercoaster of emotions each of the characters was feeling in those moments. This was a thoroughly enjoyable listen and the narrative worked perfectly in this format. If you enjoy a tense and emotional audiobook, That Night is for you!
