This book gripped me from the beginning and kept me guessing as to how the siblings would support and cover up for each other as more and more of the story unravelled.
As you read you know there is more to it than it first seemed but the author twists and turns and I didn't see the ending as it was.
Good read.
A brilliant roller-coaster of a story. Full of all of the tension and emotion that McAllister does so brilliantly in all of her books. My favourite one yet!
Gillian McAllister is such a fantastic writer that when I see her name on a book, I don't even need to read the synopsis to know that I want to read that book. That Night is no exception: it's a gripping family drama that poses a deep moral dilemma and continually asks the reader "what would you do?". The author deftly throws her characters into more and more deeply complex dilemmas while slowly revealing little twists as the plot moves forward. A great read.
What would you do to protect your family?
ANYTHING.
That night everything changed.
Very interesting this thriller. Thanks netgalley
Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced copy.
I am so happy that I get to review this book. I absolutely love McAllister and I was super excited to be one of the first to read it.
Gillian was previously a lawyer so courtrooms have featured in her writing before. This richness of detail and reality blossom into fast paced and thrilling reads.
This book is about vets, so there are many descriptions of illnesses and medical references.
It’s also about family and the different dynamics that are created through a joint history together.
The blend of these two, coupled with a parallel storyline means that you won’t want to put this down!
I really enjoyed this book. Siblings Joe, Cathy and Frannie are on holiday at their villa in Verona. Late one night Frannie runs over and kills a man. She calls on Joe and Cathy for help. The 3 then make a decision that will change their lives forever - they bury him. But if they thought they could return to England and just carry on as normal, they were very much mistaken. This is a real page turner with some great twists. I thoroughly recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
When Gillian McAllister releases a new book, I know before I’ve even heard or read anything about it, that it will be going straight to the top of my to be read pile.
That Night is gripping, tense and thought provoking. While on a family holiday, your sister calls during the night to say she has accidentally killed a man and needs your help. How far do you go to protect her? The story follows siblings Joe, Cathy and Frannie and the aftermath of the decisions they made that night. I really enjoyed this one. The characters and their relationships with their siblings were well written and there were a couple of clever twists that I would never have guessed. Highly recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
This is a long book about 3 siblings, at the start they are on holiday in Verona, Italy. The youngest phones late at night, she has caused the death of a man by running him over. Her brother and sister help her dispose of the body . Much of the rest of the book is about the tangled web of lies and cover ups which resulted from that night in Italy . But there are also problems from their past which have influenced their relationships with each other and with others. The book is slow moving in parts, but the story does gradually come together and I can now say that I found it a good read.
I am not sure whether I liked any of the characters particularly, all had their problems and were to some degree too self-absorbed .The explanations from childhood could have been better explained and grounded more. This was the weak point of the book for me .
However I enjoyed it on the whole
Thank you to Net Galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review
A great read, a very fast start that grabs your attention. The lay out of the book, having past and present stories being told side by side is a great way to get the story across. Loads of twists that where not expected! A great read would recommend.
My thanks to Netgalley for my copy of That Night. At the outset I found this book a little slow but it did speed up as it went along and more than kept my interest eventually.
I didn't really like any of the characters except of course Paul; even the parents were a little strange. Frannie was very annoying and I found her's and Joe's relationship to be bordering on incest! I really get the twos company, threes a crowd element of the siblings' relationship though, that was spot on.
All in all a good read with plenty of twists to keep you going until the very end.
That Night follows the story of the Plant siblings: Cathy, Joe and Frannie. They are closer than most families. They live next door to each other in cottages and work together in the family vet practice. But one night, something happens that pushes their family loyalty to the limit. While on holiday in Verona, Frannie phones Cathy and Joe in the middle of the night. She has hit and killed a man while driving along the deserted Italian road near their villa.
The beginning of this novel puts us straight in the middle of the action. It made me want to read on immediately. The siblings decide that, for various reasons, they can’t report the accident and so they bury the man’s body in the nearby woods. The rest of the novel follows the aftermath of the incident and the siblings’ return to their forever-changed lives back in the UK. The key question of this book is very relatable: how far would you go to protect your family?
I’ve read all of Gillian McAllister’s books and one of her strengths is character development. Each sibling has their own distinct personality, with small details about their characters that make them fully-rounded. We are shown the strong, almost unhealthy, family ties they have formed and that makes the events of the plot believable. I liked the inclusion of Joe’s wife, Lydia, whose role as the family outsider makes the siblings’ claustrophobic relationships even more apparent. She also adds tension to the plot with her determination to find out what Joe is hiding when she notices a change in his behaviour.
The plot is fast-paced and engaging, as we watch the siblings try to lead the police away from their crime with actions that ultimately, make the situation even worse. There are a number of twists and reveals that add suspense and the different subjects throughout the book are well-researched, particularly the vets’ terminology. I enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading Gillian McAllister’s next novel.
I couldn't get into this book. So sorry.
Found it a slow start. It may have been my mind set. But decided not to continue reading it .
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This story is about the plant siblings, Joe, Cathy & Frannie. One night whilst the three siblings are holidaying in their villa in Italy Cathy receives a frantic phone call from her sister Frannie begging her for help. She has killed a man by knocking him down in her car. How far will the siblings go to help their sister?
I am a huge fan of this author but something about this book just didn’t gel with me. The closeness of the siblings seemed too close to me, so much so I was beginning to suspect an incestuous relationship. I was thankfully wrong about that. I would say that this isn’t quite as fast paced as some of her other books and didn’t always keep my attention. Although I guessed part of the ending there was still a few surprises. I do like it when the author doesn’t go for the most obvious ending.
That Night starts with a desperate call between siblings to try and cover up an accidental death in the middle of the night. It then follows the fall out in their lives going forward. How much impact the events of that night can have.
I didn’t particularly like the characters of the siblings or understand the motivations of the actions they took. I thought they were all quite selfish (especially Frannie). It made me feel quite sorry for the supporting characters.
The last quarter of the story the pace really picked up and my overall rating increased from a 3 to a 4 because of the strength of the ending.
I love the premise to this book and enjoyed reading it.
I would say it's less of a thriller and more of a delve into a relationship between three (or four) siblings and how much their closeness and stability is shaken after a life changing event.
As such, I found myself waiting for twists that weren't really there and that spoiled it for me, sorry.
This book was intense to the max! The family went through it all and still they stood together. Honestly, I spent the whole book waiting to see who was going to crack first and what was going to happen and then when you get a glimpse into the future, you are still guessing. As the book went on and more people were finding out and the truth was surfacing, you were thrown with more curve balls. My heart was really with little Paul and by the end he was the only character I cared about, but in a good way, as I don’t believe we were overly meant to like the main characters. They all had their flaws and far from perfect.
Great intense read with a few little gems hidden throughout the book. You wouldn't want to be in this family!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. What an addictive page turner of a book. Although I guessed one of the twists it didn't make my enjoyment of this book any less and I still found myself shocked in other parts, furiously turning the pages back to see what I had missed!
Just the kind of book I love
A thrilling read, with a twist I didn't see coming. How far would you go to protect your family? That Night is all about doing anything for those we love but at what cost?
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book.
Thanks to NetGalley, Penguin UK, Michael Joseph and Gillian McAllister for my ARC of That Night in return for my honest review.
I have read all of Gillian McAllister’s novels and always find them compelling. This is no exception and the twists and turns just kept on coming.
This novel revolves around the Plant family. The main storyline is between the three siblings, Frannie, Cathy and Joe. Not only do they work together running a successful vet practice, they live next to each other in the same street. It all feels a little claustrophobic.
‘That Night’ centres on a holiday they took to Verona, staying in their villa. The three siblings plus Joe’s wife, Lydia, and Frannie’s son, Paul, had taken a break from the vet’s practice, leaving Evan in charge. Frannie calls her two siblings in the early hours of one morning, careful to exclude Lydia, as she has run over a man.
They begin the cover up and, despite being questioned by the local police they are allowed to return to the UK. The story investigates the relationship between the three of them and their parents and how it all changes as they believe the body will be found any time. There are some clever dialogues and some evil situations.
Excellent read. Highly recommended.
Another excellent book from the pen of Gillian McAllister.
It was gripping from the very first page to the last. I loved how the story went from ‘then’ to ‘now’ but didn’t really give anything away. It was dark and felt sinister in places and had me holding my breath. I had no idea there was a twist coming and certainly didn’t predict the ending.
As always from this author, a real page turner because it’s that or put the book down and there’s not much chance of that!
Treat yourself; curl up with this book and ask the question - What would you do?
