This book just kept me turning the pages, I could not put it down.
Your sister calls, she's in n trouble, so of course you go to her. But a crime has been committed. You help her cover it up. But are you ever then free?
Told from 'then' and'now' we follow three siblings as their family fractures following'That Night'. As the truth starts to filter out, can they trust each other?
Totally gripping and did not see the end coming.

How deep does family loyalty run? Siblings Frannie, Catherine and Joe are as close as can be, living, working and holidaying together, but a freak accident turns into murder - and then what do you do? tense, tightly-knit - a good read. I enjoyed the different perspectives and timelines, with more truths being uncovered page by page.

A solid 4/5 stars

Absolutely unputdownable. A gripping, psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first page. Extremely well-written, well plotted and good characters. This book will soar into the bestsellers list when it is released and thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity of reading it in advance. Will definitely recommend it to my book club.

This is exactly the type of story that you would expect from a Gillian McAlister book.
That Night is the story of siblings Frannie, Joe and Cathy. They live in the same village. They work together in a veterinary practice and holiday together in Italy. When Joe and Cathy receive a phone call from Frannie saying she needs their help after accidentally killed someone they help.
Only can you ever trust someone to keep your secret? Can you ever trust your family? With a mixture of guilt, fear, disbelief, love and anger thrown in to the mix just how far would you be prepared to go to protect your family.
I thought the first third of this book was a bit slow, it seemed to take a while for me to be invested in the story which is unusual from a Gillian McAllister book. The book is told from various perspectives through the then and now timeline it is, in parts, hard to follow if you’re not concentrating.
Overall, I was drawn to this book due to being a fan of Gillian McAllister and whilst I don’t think it is one her best books it was an enjoyable read.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this for my honest review.

I started this book a wee while ago, and struggled to get into it. I don’t think my make of e-reader liked this ARC if I’m honest. So the jumping of perspective, and the jumping of time, didn’t translate well in my brain. At about the 40% mark I understood a little more, and the chapters weren’t as punchy, meaning I was able to get stuck into this family drama.

Once I started reading this on my phone, I was HOOKED by the story and tried to spot the next twist or the next hurdle on their path - and I raced to the end.

I loved How to Disappear, and while that focused relationships in a tight knit marriage and their children, That Night looks at siblings and their bond - bonded through childhood experiences and what happened on That Night.

Frannie, Joe and Cathy are siblings who work together, live next to each other and holiday together. That night tells the story of how Frannie kills a man and phones Joe and Cathy for help! What are they going to do? How will they live with the choices they make on that fateful night that will change their lives forever. What will the repercussions be and how long can they lie to each other themselves and the people they love?

Would love to have a what happens next?! Can see this being adapted for a tv drama.

Many thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph UK for granting my wish to read this in exchange for an honest review. Can't wait to recommend to friends and family.

Gillian McAllister is one of the most original and thought-provoking authors and once again she has delivered a gut-wrenching, page-turning story.

That Night is her latest standalone legal(ish) thriller which is due out on 10th June and my thanks to her publisher for my early copy.

This story centres around the Plant family, siblings Frannie, Joe and Cathy work together in the family veterinary practice, live next door to each other in a quiet village and holiday together in Verona. A close family unit which finds itself tested to their very limits when Frannie calls her siblings in the middle of the night having accidentally hit a pedestrian and killed him.

Narrated through the various characters, That Night retells the story of the accidental killing and how far the siblings would go to protect their sister and cover up her crime.

Their unnaturally close and often claustrophobic relationship makes for some uncomfortable moments, especially when each sibling begins to question their loyalty and guilt starts to manifest and multiply causing feelings of paranoia.

I personally found it difficult to warm to any of the characters so my feelings towards their situation wasn’t as invested as I have been in the authors previous books.

There were moments when I questioned the characters motives and actions and many times I asked myself if I would do the same for my siblings (the answer is probably not!). There are several twisty moments throughout the story and I was pleasantly surprised a couple of times towards the end as I didn’t see the twists coming.

I've enjoyed the author's previous books and this was certainly no different.
It was fast paced and I did end up questioning my own relationship to my sibling....am I this loyal and would I go as far to protect him?!

Brilliant plot, believable characters, I couldn't put it down!

I’ve read and enjoyed most of Gillian McAllister’s books and That Night was no exception. It’s well written, cleverly plotted, with some unpredictable twists and interesting characters. The book explores the dynamics of a family, relationships between siblings and how they change when faced with a tragedy. It also poses a terrifying moral dilemma, which makes the reader contemplate the million dollar question - ‘What would I do?’.

I absolutely loved this book. I am a huge fan of Gillian McAllister and her latest offering didn’t disappoint. In fact, her books seems to be improving every time.

Cathy, Frannie and Joe are the three remaining plant siblings. They work together at their family veterinary practice and they live, side by side, in a row of cottages. They are close, perhaps stiflingly so.

One night, that night, on holiday in Verona, Frannie kills a man. Her panicked calls are to her siblings begging for their help. What can they do? What would you do? How far would you do for someone you love?

A story of love, loss, anger, fierce protection and fear. A brilliant book.

I loved everything about this book. Great storyline, interesting characters and a thrilling ride from start to finish. I love a good page-turner and this one didn’t fail! Gripping and twisty and right up my street. I look forward to reading more by the author.

The Plants - Joe, Cathy & Frannie along with Joe's wife, Lydia and Frannie's son Paul are on holiday at their villa in Verona. They are enjoying some much need r&r away from their busy family Vet's practice. Their colleague and mother are running it in their absence.

Late one night a few days before they go home Joe and Cathy get a tearful call from Frannie asking for their help. What they find is a tragic accident and they help their sister cover it up. They return to England different people and feel that they are always looking over their shoulders expecting the worst. All is not as it seems.

I found the second half of the book more fast paced and twisty. Did Frannie really tell them the whole truth? Cathy sometimes feels left out of Joe's and Frannie's closeness and sometimes regrets that they all live next door to one another. Their colleague finds out what happened in Italy and decides to blackmail the siblings which leads to more tragic consequences.... I warmed most to the characters of Cathy and Lydia, who despite everything got their happy endings.

As someone who has previously worked in Birmingham, Gillian McAllister’s novels resonate with me and I have always been amazed how well-researched, pointedly crafted and brilliantly written each of her novels is. I was delighted to be sent an ARC by the publishers (Michael Joseph) and NetGalley and knew this would be one weekend with much reading and little else done.
In this novel, we encounter siblings Joe, Cathy and Franny who are so close that they not only live in neighbouring cottages but also work together. A joint trip to the family villa near Verona throws their well-ordered, supportive lives into chaos, however, as it is here that one sibling committed a crime that the other two helped cover up. In a plot that switches between the siblings’ domestic settings in Birmingham and the beautiful landscapes of Verona (what an unlikely literary pairing), we slowly watch the siblings’ lives disintegrate. Less of a crime novel (as some of McAllister’s previous novels were) and more of a psychological insight into family dynamics, sibling bonds, and misplaced loyalty, this novel should appeal to McAllister’s existing readership and gain her plenty more fans.

This is my first book by Gillian McAllister and I did enjoy it. I felt it was a well written thriller and it did make me think............how far would you go to protect your siblings...........not this far, for sure!

The story focuses on three siblings, two sisters and a brother who run a veterinary practice that they have taken over from their mother. Unusually, in my opinion, they all work together and have bought three cottages all next to one another, and a holiday home together in Verona. I personally don’t know any siblings who are that close!

While on holiday in Verona, the younger sister has a car accident and kills a man and immediately calls her brother and sister for help.

The book wasn’t a frantic page-turner for me and all of the leading characters are flawed and not immediately likeable but having said that, I didn’t work it all out before the end. I did anticipate parts of it but not the final twist.

I would read another of this author’s books as this one definitely kept me wanting to keep reading.

Absolutely devoured this in one delicious sitting. Love this author and if you haven’t read anything by her yet you lucky thing. You’ve got a good pile to buy and read. Really like that each book is set somewhere new and it’s obviously well researched. 5/5.

Let's just start by saying Gillian McAllister has become that author who's books I just can't get enough of. How to Disappear and Anything You Do Say are right up there with my favourite ever books.

Gillian has a way of writing books that pulls you in and makes you really care about the characters and what's going to happen to them. Her stories always stay with me long after I've read them (and the amount I read I forget storylines quite quickly). She is absolutely the Queen of the Moral Dilemma!

Siblings Cathy, Joe and Frannie are about as close as it's possible for families to get. They live in adjoining cottages, they work, together, they holiday together. One night on holiday at their villa in Verona Joe and Cathy receive a call from Frannie. She has hit a man and killed him in her car. The siblings rush to her aid and help her bury the body. What follows is the story of a family bound together by a terrible secret.

Yet again I was gripped, whilst constantly thinking what would I do in their shoes?

Did it surpass How to Disappear for me? Not quite, but that for me was one almost impossible act to follow. It certainly doesn't stop me giving this book 5 stars and recommending it to everyone.

This was a bit of a slow read to start with the details of Frannie's crime withheld but not always in a tantalising way and a fair amount of dwelling on the various actions of the siblings. As the book moved on the plot became less muddied and the story more enjoyable.
I particularly disliked the character of Frannie, she seemed to be very flawed in her behaviour and moral attitude with few redeeming features but the depiction of sibling rivalry both between the three siblings and in vying for their parents approval and support was very realistic and true to life.
Not my favourite by Gillian McAllister but still very readable.

I have not read anything previously by this author. It was an unusual story, looking at family loyalties and how far they will go to protect their loved ones. I was completely on the wrong track trying to work out what really happened. A real page turner with some surprising twists.

There's no disputing Gillian McAllister has a talent for writing thrillers. I particularly enjoyed her last one. So much so this novel didn't quite match up.
This is an interesting plot. I enjoyed the tension. Unfortunately, I just couldn't relate to, look, or root for any of the characters. I understand characters don't have to be likeable to be good. For me, though, the three members of the same family seemed rather similar in their personalities.
I have no doubt this novel will do well. Thanks to the publisher for this early copy.
