One night changes the whole dynamic of a family. Joe, Cathy and Frannie are siblings – the two older ones are vets and Frannie is the receptionist for the business. They live together in three separate cottages and are very close. Frannie has a little boy called Paul from a holiday fling. They go on holiday to their holiday home in Verona and that is where things go drastically wrong. The siblings are very protective of one another especially Joe as far as Frannie is concerned and probably looks after her and cares for her over and above his wife needs which will cause problems in the long run. Frannie makes a frantic call to Joe and Cathy in the middle of the night as she has had a car accident. The family takes things into their own hands which leads to trouble. Once home the family begins to fall apart with the secrets they are bonded together with and more of the story unfolds from Frannie. The story continues down the road of destruction of each one’s mental capacity to live with their Verona holiday which eventually comes back to haunt them. It is a good read and it makes you wonder what you would do for your siblings if they were in a very similar situation – thought provoking to say the least.

This book is amazing. I read the authors previous book How To Disappear and totally loved it, so there was a lot to live up to but this book was just as good. This book is about 2 sisters and a brother, How far would you go to protect your family? Would you protect them even if it involved murder? Read this book and it will keep you gripped right from the start up to the last page. I am now going to download the authors previous books.

The three Plant siblings have always been close. An inseparable bond, the family work together, live next to each other and regularly socialise with one another. One hot summers day in Italy, Cathy and Joe receive a call from Frannie declaring that she had killed someone. Together the siblings cover up the crime to protect Frannie but changing their lives forever.
Gillian McAllister has done it again. An incredible read with so many twists and turns. The tangle of lies makes the reader wonder who is telling the truth and question how this story was going to end. You MUST add this one to your to be read list.
Thank you to NetGalley, @penguinuk and of course Gillian McAllister for this ARC

During a family holiday in Italy, you get an urgent call from your sister. There's been an accident: she hit a man with her car and he's dead. She's overcome with terror - fearing years in a foreign jail away from her child. She asks for your help. It wasn't her fault, not really. She'd cover for you, so will you do the same for her? But when the police come calling, the lies start. And you each begin to doubt your trust in one another.
Wow, McAllister just keeps delivering exhilarating reads! Yet again, this is a fast-paced, intense read with a unique plot that had me gripped from the start. McAllister really does have a talent for complex plots that leave you breathless and in awe of her talent and how everything gets pulled together. The plot alone is strong but once you add in all the tricks and twists up McAllister's sleeve, this becomes an unforgettable read.
This book is packed with twists, some are more obvious than others. I was pleased with myself for having worked out some twists and thought that would be that, but oh no, McAllister had other ideas! From out of nowhere came some truly shocking twists that completely blindsided me and left me speechless. It certainly made for exciting reading.
I have already mentioned that this is an intense read but I need to stress just how intense it is. From the beginning, McAllister builds this atmosphere of intensity. From the summer weather in Verona, to the actions of the characters and the far-reaching consequences. The atmosphere is taut, packed with pressure that is waiting to implode, it makes for very special reading.
McAllister always writes her books in interesting styles too, that only add to my enjoyment. This is no different. I will not go into details but you are in for a real treat as you experience this read and discover how everything is included for a reason and gets brought together.
Finally, after all that, I move onto the characters and yes they are every bit as special as the plot. We have our three main characters, siblings, who could not be any closer. Perhaps they are too close, this only adds to the tension though. The trio are a special group of characters and I cannot stress enough how enjoyable it was to get to know them and live this story through them.
'That Night' is an electrifying, unforgettable read and I cannot recommend it enough. Well done McAllister, this is another sensational, complex read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for an advance copy.

What a fantastic gripping read. I literally couldn't put this down. The story centres around 3 siblings, their close relationships with each other and their parents. A life-changing incident occurs one night, the fallout from which tests each of their relationships. Is blood thicker than water? How do decisions taken affect lives going forward? If you've not read this book, get your hands on a copy as soon as you can.

How close is your family what will you do to protect them your brothers or sisters, would you cover for them anything! ! ! Even murder.
Having lost their youngest sister Francis, Cathy and Joe (Joseph) are very close 2 sisters one brother now. They run a veterinary practise just outside Birmingham and all live next door to each other and have a holiday villa in Italy, all right for some well until...... They have to cover a murder together. This is a family saga you won't want to have they love each other but the pressure of what they have done is immense well stating the obvious I guess. This is a secret that could cost them everything or could they get away with it? ? ? Can't tell you it would ruin the fun but I can tell you from the first phone call till the last sentence this is gripping can they keep it together can they keep a secret everything could depend on it. Yep its addictive each page could cost you some finger nail.
I loved the characters each successful in their own way and flawed like most of us, met a few un-flawed by I have to take their word for it lol.
This is a great read its got all that's needed for a five 🌟 ⭐ ⭐⭐🌟 read. I hope you enjoy it I thought it was brilliant hope you do as well.

Gillian McAllister has a way of writing that gets into your mind, carrying the lives of the characters in the book with you.
That Night tells the story of three siblings as their annual holiday to Verona goes disastrously wrong. As further events unfold as they try to cover up their actions, which sibling will break first, despite the need to stay strong and united as one?
Joe, Cathy and Frannie are similar and different all at the same time. They will each do anything to protect each other, or will they? I was engrossed in this book of secrets, past and present.

This is a fast paced page-turner. In Verona, Frannie has made a mistake and rings her siblings Cathy and Joe for help. The decisions they make that night haunt them and change their lives forever. McAllister writes the family dynamics so well and creates a very tense and claustrophobic atmosphere as the consequences of their actions becomes apparent. Hard to put down!

Brother and sisters Joe, Cathy and Frannie Plant are as close as it gets. They live in adjoining cottages and Joe and Cathy are Vets, Frannie the receptionist in their own Practice.
Late one night while holidaying at their villa in Verona, Frannie phones her brother and sister for help. The actions they take to protect her set off a tsunami of fear, hatred, jealousy and blackmail, and once started, there is no going back.
Toggling between now, and then (the night in Verona) with alternating accounts from each sibling, That Night feels long at times. We are treated to an in depth analysis of the three characters and as it is difficult to like any of them it takes a while to arrive at the merging of then and now.
Once we do however, this book springs to life. The twists are clever and the development of the relationship between the siblings and their partners is intriguing.
Patience required for the first half is richly rewarded by the second.

*4.5 stars *
Siblings, Cathy, Joe, and Frannie Plant are extremely close - too close perhaps, both literally and geographically, living in three adjoining cottages, and working together in the family’s veterinary practice. Joe’s wife Lydia, sometimes feels a bit of an outsider, excluded from many of their conversations, on the sidelines with their inside jokes, and knowing glances.
However, they take sibling loyalty too far, when Frannie accidentally kills a man in a hit and run, whilst on holiday at the family villa in Italy, and the three of them decide to bury his body in order to protect her. Once you tell a lie of such massive proportions though, it’s impossible to stop - one lie leads to another, and they just seem to gather steam - but where will it all end!
‘That Night’ is tense, gripping, and tightly plotted, and furthermore, there are a couple of brilliant twists awaiting the unsuspecting reader! Gillian McAllister does a great job of making her reader feel pulled into that spiral of questioning “What would I do?“ if faced with a monumental tragedy created by a much loved family member. Loved it!

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book.
I’ve read and loved all of Gillian McAllister’s previous books and this was no exception. The sibling relationships were brilliantly illustrated and there were a few things that I really didn’t see coming. Great read.

Amazing!
I'm not sure how this is the first Gillian McAllister I've read, but I'm off to scour the back catalogue for some more! That Night follows the Plant Family as they deal with the aftermath of a fateful night on holiday. It asks all the right questions, what would we do in the same situation.
Great, believable characters and a plot that was fast-paced and fun.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for the chance to read and review.

Once again I appear to be in the minority for not loving this book - not a bad thing!
I’ve read a few of Gillian McAllister’s books and like this one they’re always beautifully written. But I just couldn’t get absorbed into this storyline. Something about the way the story unfolds in this particular book just didn’t do it for me and I find myself both annoyed with the style but then at the same time wanting to write how wonderful it was!
So my issue I think was that when the story required pace the dialogue was broken up in amongst memories, backstory and character development. As such, it felt like someone had left the handbrake on and the raw, animalistic, brutal emotions you’d expect never fully reach their climax. I found myself skimming paragraphs to keep up with the dialogue which was what really interested me.
All in all, it’s a good, easy read but needed a bit more oomph - just not my favourite from this author.
Thank you NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

A thrilling story with Frannie, Cathy and Joe (three siblings) becoming involved in what appears to have been a terrible car accident.
The family members are on vacation in Verona, staying in their holiday villa. However, a desperate call for help by Frannie, late at night, sets off a gripping chain of events involving them becoming entangled in a complex web of lies and deceit.
The story is told from the viewpoint of each sibling giving their version of events, as they are questioned by the police about a local person who has gone missing, giving a more rounded portrayal of each character. As the deception becomes more complex and intriguing, the stakes are raised, making you question how far you would go to protect your family.
Short, pacy chapters highlight the unfolding drama, keeping you absorbed in the events which happened on that fateful night, and intrigue following.
This is another great book by Gillian McAllister – an exciting, compelling page turner. Highly recommended.

The chapters of this incredible thriller alternated between the perspectives of siblings Cathy, Frannie and Joe and flipped back and forth between the present day and the events of the ill fated holiday that changed their lives forever. It must have appeared to outsiders who witnessed interactions between the trio that they shared a strong bond, they worked together, were partners at their parents veterinary surgery and lived next door to each other in a row of three isolated cottages. But feelings of tension, mistrust and isolation bubbled below the surface of their apparently close relationships. Cathy very often felt like she was treated like a outsider, the top point of the triangle and that her brother and sister were keeping secrets from her. As with all familial relationships, the dynamics within the siblings were constantly shifting and changing and I thought they were a realistic set of characters, each of whom had their own unique personalities, character traits and issues. There was aspects of each character that I liked and aspects that I disliked, the character that I felt most connection with and liked the most was Cathy.
There was also chapters that were voiced from the perspective of Joe's wife Lydia, she also felt like a outsider when the siblings were together and to be honest,I had to agree with her.She seemed to spend all of her holiday taking care of Frannie's young son Paul whilst the siblings were plotting and trying to figure out how they were going to get away with murder.
Interspersed throughout the book was chapters where one of the siblings was attending meetings with a character called Jason and also some chapters that were set in a court room where the trial R v Plant was being held.
Wow...just wow, this book is absolutely, bloody incredible, it's a tightly plotted, captivating tale of family, relationships, secrets, deception, lies, there is even a dash of blackmail. The story had me hooked in from the first page and glued to my kindle, I honestly couldn't put this addictive thriller down and read the whole book in one sitting. Gillian McCallister's thrillers are always extremely well written, have casts of vivid, realistic characters and unexpected twists and turns, I'm happy to say That Night is no exception. Worth all the stars and more and very very highly recommended.

And boom she does it again, another seriously good book from Gillian, fast paced and full of the twists we all love this ones a must read, I liked the main character and the story in itself was fab...Gives you a good insight into how witness protection works and I honestly was on the edge of my seat throughout it and couldn’t put the thing down, it has suspense by the bucket loads and the endings a killer....masterpiece!!!

My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph Uk for a copy of “ That Night “ for an honest review.
I’ve loved Gillian McAllister from her first book and over the years she’s been an author I’ve recommended to many. This could possibly be her best so far.
The storyline grabbed me from the start and the characters were so well written I really engaged with the siblings. I genuinely felt anxious as I was reading the book , as if was somehow involved !
I could easily have read this in one go , but I didn’t want it to end.
The only disappointing thing is that I’ve got to wait until next year for her new book.
I cannot recommend this highly enough .A definite five star review from me .

Isn’t it funny how sometimes you can read just the first page in a story and just know that it is going to be great? The word ‘great’ doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this book. I started reading it late yesterday and have finished it late tonight. I’m not going to outline the story – that’s done in the description, and in other reviews I’m sure. All I’m going to say is that at times I literally had to stop reading and go outside to try and calm myself down. Honestly – my heart was in my mouth, and I was so ‘in’ the story that I could feel everything that was happening to the characters and couldn’t bear the stress they were feeling for a minute longer. The writing is truly brilliant. Gillian McAllister – I had never heard of you before, but you are now my Number 1 favourite author of all time and I will be buying whatever books you wrote before this, and any that may come after. You have made me realise that the hundreds of books that I read before this, that I thought were very good, were actually just OK! You made me gasp out loud, you made me cringe, and you made me whisper ‘Please God, no!’ as I was reading. The wonderful and believable plot, the twists and turns, the amazing descriptive writing, the structure of the story, just everything about it … I am literally lost for words. Breathtaking will have to do! If readers only read one book in the whole of 2021 it has to be this one.

I had never read a Gillian book before this one but I was instantly hooked and will now be adding all of her books to my Amazon wish list. An absolutely amazing read, so amazing that I read it in two nights. I would rate it more than five stars. A gripping thriller full of mystery and intrigue which keeps you guessing until the very last page.
