This is the story of a family trying to cover up a terrible tragedy and the lengths you will go to to protect your loved ones. I really enjoyed the family aspect of this story and the characters and although it was a fast paced storyline it also made you think just how far you would go to protect the ones you love. Another great book by Gillian McAllister, bring on the next one!
I really wanted to be part of the Plant family... the connection and love between the siblings was really quite something.
That was the best bit about the book for me.
An enjoyable tale,in what youd do for those you love, yet I was constantly distracted by the calm way everyone went about their lives.
Nobody really seemed to freak out... and that bothered me a bit.
Nice little twist at the end.

You know when you’re desperate to read and finish a book, but when you do finish it, you wish that you hadn’t, so you can carry on enjoying it? Well this is literally how I feel about “that night”.
I always feel really cautious when reviewing books, as I hate to give away any spoilers, so to put it simply- THIS IS A MUST READ!
Take a bow Gillian McAllister because this is a masterpiece! Not only is it just an amazing thriller- it also makes you think what would we do for the people we love? How far would we go to protect our families?
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I enjoyed the relationship between the siblings and the plot had good potential. My only gripe is that the plot was a bit predictable and I just couldn’t get invested in the story until I was about 60% in.
I’m not really sure where to start with this review, I’m reasonably sure that I really liked it but the sadness and feelings of tension the writer expertly conjoured up were deeply unsettling. I am, however, seriously impressed by how much I was affected by the ingenious scenario and the way it was written.
It leads you to question everything you know, deep family loyalties and love and what on earth you’d do in such a shocking nightmarish situation.
There were plenty of dark twists and turns, especially towards the end, plus we are left guessing right to the conclusion as to how it will all pan out. Very emotive to say the least!
I really enjoyed this latest thriller from Gillian McAllister. This was a really tense read. It’s one of those books that I kept putting down to catch my breath, but also read quickly because I needed to know what was going to unfold in the next sentence!
I loved the way this story was told, with points of view from each sibling, telling the events that happened in Italy, and then back at home in the UK.
I must admit I wasn’t too sure if I liked the three siblings, Joe, Cathy and Frannie, although I did warm to Cathy more as the story progressed. They were almost too good to be true, the way they lived next door to each other and worked together, so claustrophobic. I have 4 siblings and I love them to bits, but I wouldn’t want to be that close to them. I need my space! 😀
Of course as the plot unfurled the siblings had to cover their tracks and lies, which took them to situations they never imagined they’d ever face. I loved this aspect of the story. It was like watching car crash TV, seeing them make monumentally stupid decisions that could only end badly.
I won’t write any more, for fear of letting something important slip out, except to say there’s a really fab twists and reveals in there. I think it would make a fantastic series with plenty of cliffhangers at the end of each episode!
I highly recommend this if you enjoy domestic thrillers.
I was thrilled to be approved to read an ARC of That Night. Having read all of this authors other books, I knew I was in for a treat. And I was not disappointed. This was a brilliant, fast paced, page turner. You really get to know the characters well, yet the whole way through the book I had no idea how it was going to end. Its not often I can read a book so quickly but I couldn't put this one down. Another five star read and I can't wait to read more books from Gillian.
I love Gillian McCallister's writing, I've read all of her previous novels and I think she's a hugely original writer. As with her previous novels her characterisation and attention to detail is superb. I was intrigued by the relationship between the three siblings and it was interesting to see how this played out throughout the novel. I found this to be a compelling and gripping read but a little slow compared to her previous novels. It definitely picked up towards the end and was ultimately a hugely satisfying thriller that I'd recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC
I’m a huge fan of the author and have read a few of her book so I couldn’t wait to read That Night. The blurb sounded like the kind of book I could really get into. Like all good thrillers, I enjoyed the fast pace, twists and misdirection, those things make the best kind of thrillers. I really enjoyed the relationships between siblings Frannie, Cathy and Joe. I’m an only child and I envied their bond which comes across really well. I also loved way the author explores the shared guilt of the characters as they all struggle with the enormous consequences of their actions. This is an excellent read.
Take a trip to Verona, Italy 🇮🇹
It’s the middle of the night. Cathy is still awake in her holiday villa going over her emails. She’s the partner of a veterinarian practice she runs with her brother, Joe. They even brought their holiday villa together and make extra money by renting it out. Cathy’s life is the dream. Except for the fact she’s been single for ages. She watches her younger sister, Frannie, who is carefree and happy with her two-year old son (result of a one-stand), and her younger brother Joe with his wife Lydia. The couple have been trying to get pregnant. Their middle-class worries are thrown out the window when Cathy and Joe receive a frantic phone call from Frannie in the dead of the night. She was driving home when the car hit a man. 🌌🚗 She can’t call the police because earlier that day she was spotted arguing with the man in the village by the police. They’ll add a motive to the incident. After all Italian police aren’t know for their fairness. Suddenly the siblings are involved in a cover-up...🔦🧹
It took me awhile to get into the, I admit. I did the premise a-bit cheesy and cliched, and the plot was fairly predictable if you’ve read many thrillers. What kept me going was the characters and how feasible their actions. I adored the sibling dynamics: the jealousy, the tension, the banter. Yet that wasn’t enough to keep my hooked, but the story does pick up in the second of the book and I did quite like the ending and how things were wrapped up. I think it’s just the minutia of the practice that bored me, and I wanted the plot to pick up. A solid 3.5 stars!!
Gillian McAllister is one of my favourite authors. She writes such tender, character-based suspense thrillers, and That Night is no different, focusing on the sibling dynamics.
This opens with Frannie ringing her sister, Cathy, and brother, Joe, in the middle of the night. She’s hit a man...
Joe and Cathy run a family veterinarian practice in Birmingham. Frannie, the youngest sister, is the receptionist at the practice. Joe and Cathy brought a holiday in Verona years ago, which they put for rent whole year long except for Summer when the siblings come for a vacation. Earlier that Frannie argues with a man in the market. Later that night she’s accidentally killed him in a hit-and-run...
Joe and Cathy try CPR and to stop the bleeding, but it’s too late...And their DNA is all over the man. In a panic the siblings decide to bury him...
And that’s when the tension starts to escalate and things unravel...
This is odd book for me to review. I wanted to like more than I did. I thought the characters were top notch like always. Loved the sibling dynamics and the relationship between them. The only thing is the plot was a bit predictable for me. I just couldn’t get invested in the story and felt myself falling into a slump. The last 20% had lots of reveals and the story did tie up nicely, but overall I did find this lacklustre in comparison to McAllister’s previous novels.
Gillian McAllister once again impresses with some great writing, brilliant characters, and a portrayal of relationship dynamics that makes for excellent reading.
I must admit though, the premise of the entire story didn’t sit well with me at the beginning. I just couldn’t see people making those types of collective decisions, under any circumstances. Having said that, the plot grew on me, the writing outshone any doubts, and the story flowed beautifully until its poignant conclusion.
Thanks again for another great, thought-provoking journey
Thanks NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for a review copy
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really like this author and have read all her books and although I enjoyed the storyline of this found some of the characters annoying. Nevertheless a good read.
The story of a family trying to cover up a murder.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I really wanted to enjoy this book but the amount of swearing put me off reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review
Frannie, Cathy and Joe Plant are very close siblings. They share a veterinary practice and live in adjacent cottages. 'That night' takes place while they are on holiday in the family villa in Verona. It makes the reader question what they would do in the same situation. Frannie calls to say she has accidentally hit a man and appeals to her siblings for help. Should they phone the police or help her hide the evidence? Secrets are hard to keep and all three siblings struggle with the guilt of what happened.
The main characters are well painted and the reader feels invested in their story. I really liked the character, Tom and it was nice to read that Gillian McAllister always bases her heroes on a special man in her own life.
The author cleverly weaves in chapters in the present time, which have one character sharing their story with lawyer, Jason. The rest of the story is told from the viewpoint of Cathy and Joe as events unfolded in the past.
Gillian McAllister is extremely talented at writing in this genre. She seems to know exactly the moment to reveal a twist in the tale. I felt the pace was a bit slow at the beginning, but it soon became clear that this will no doubt be another bestseller for the author.
Thanks indeed to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Gillian McAllister is one of my must-read authors; I’ve loved all of her books and she just keeps getting better. She writes characters and family dynamics with skill and realism. Despite the fast pacing, it really makes you stop and think – in this case, how far would you go for your family? What would you do to protect them? Brilliant.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin MJ for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
What Gillian does so well is keep the reader reading with every page enticing me to want to know more. It's done with plausibility which is make it even more impressive. I enjoyed all the characters and thought the structure of the book was really well done with lots of twists and reveals. The final twist for me was a little bit of a let-down but I suspect only because all the others were so good! A wonderful read that I will be recommending to others.
I have read all of Gillian McAllister’s books and enjoyed them all. Her last one ‘how to disappear’ was one of my favourite books last year.
I enjoyed ‘That Night’ but not as much as some of the others.
I thought the relationships between Frannie, Cathy and Joe were interesting. Being an only child I always find sibling relationships interesting.
The book was quite slow paced but really picked up and came into it’s own in the last 25%
Interesting and different family drama, very different to everything else ive read.
This was a brilliant read! The tension didn’t let up and I got totally caught up in the story, to the point where I would have to remind myself that I wasn’t actually involved! I loved the closeness of the three siblings and how they lived next door to each other and worked at the veterinary practice. The plot tests sibling loyalty to the extreme and asks questions: what would you do if your sibling phoned you late at night begging for your help as they have accidentally killed someone? I couldn’t put this book down and would thoroughly recommend it. I have enjoyed all of Gillian McAllister’s novels but this is the best yet.
I'm always excited to see a new Gillian McAllister book, and this one was another brilliant and twisty read.
When Frannie accidentally kills a man while on holiday at the family villa in Italy, it's not the police she calls, but her siblings, Joe and Cathy. The three are unusually close, working in the family veterinary practice, and living next door to each other in a trio of remote cottages. Cathy and Joe don't have a choice: they have to protect their sister. But when the three siblings return to England, things begin to get complicated. The more they find out about the dead man, and about that night, the more it becomes clear that they are tangled in a web of lies. But if you can't trust your family - who can you trust?
The thing I love about Gillian McAllister's novels is that they are incredibly character driven, with complex and flawed characters you can't help but sympathise with. It's such a letdown for me when a character makes a stupid decision and you can't understand why - you never get that in a one of her novels as you understand the characters and what motivates them. They are also very well paced, with the twists and supporting information revealed gradually, without having to resort to gimicky cliffhangers - this is just good writing, good plotting, good EVERYTHING.
Whip-smart, beautifully written, and intriguing - another cracker.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher, who provided me with a free ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
