This book was nrilliant as ever from Gillian McAlister. Fulls of twists, it really made me think if i wsa in that situation woudl i lie for my family or would i tell the truth....Made me think how something happening so quickly can split a family and change your lives for ever.
Loved it read the whole book in one sitting.
I have read several of the author's books but found this one long winded and difficult to get into. I did not find it a page turner as with other reader.
A close family of siblings, a tragic death caused by a sister, results in a second huge error of judgment. By calling on the loyalty and support of the other two siblings to hide the results of her catastrophic mistake leads to a chain of events that become the stuff of nightmares. Can any family maintain a facade of normality and remain loyal under the spotlight of suspicion and investigation A well written psychological thriller that delivers on every level by an experienced author who uses every skill of her craft to enhance suspense in the journey towards an excellent conclusion. No spoilers just sit back and enjoy the ride. Many thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for ARC.
I loved the storyline and characters. And was surprised at the outcome.
For anyone who is fine with lots of swearing I would suggest a four stars to them
From the very first page the author immediately launches you into the action and it was so well written that I felt like I was right there during those scenes. The characters, from when we first meet them, are so well developed and that continues throughout the book, that by the end I felt like I knew them personally, including all their flaws.
The story alternates between siblings both during the past and the present which worked perfectly, especially some of those scenes in the present which provided a lot of intrigue and mystery. There is a brilliant ‘twist’ during one of the ‘present’ chapters that I wasn’t expecting at all, to the point where I even went back through the book to make sure I hadn’t made a mistake as I was certain I was correct with my theory.
Everything is so well plotted and the author teases you with each chapter, giving just enough away to create that much needed suspense and urging you to read on. I honestly had no idea just how everything was going to get resolved and just when I thought I did it would suddenly veer off in another direction. Not only was it a complete page turner as I was desperate to find out answers, but it also asks the question ‘What would you do?’ in that situation. I have two older brothers myself so many times throughout this book I was wondering what we or I would have done…..we definitely wouldn’t have made the decisions some of the characters make that’s for sure!
Overall this was a brilliantly paced psychological thriller, full of unexpected twists and takes a deep look at family dynamics, the secrets we keep from them and just how far you are willing to go to protect them.
Gillian McAllister is a master at writing those books where you have to put yourself in the character's shoes and ask what you would do in the same situation. With apologies to my siblings, if I were in the same situation as Cathy and Joe, I would run, very fast. At times, their reluctance to do the right thing makes them quite unlikeable. But if they did the right thing, we would have a very short book and what a fabulous book we would be missing out on!
That Night is written from several different perspectives including Frannie, Cathy and Joe and Joe's wife, Lydia. This really helps to get under their skin as it's clear they all have different insecurities which influence the decisions they make throughout the course of the novel. We also switch between "then" and "now." In the present day, we can see that things have changed significantly for the family and I wondered what had happened and wanted to keep reading until I had some answers!
From the very first page of Last Night, it is full to the brim with tension and I was keen to know how the siblings would solve each new problem. I loved the twists and turns that the story took and it will remain with me for a while!
A family of three siblings get caught up in lies and deceit while on holiday in Italy. Claire, Frannie and Joe have a close bond and when an accidental death threatens to embroil one of them, she pleads to the others for help. Their attempt to distance themselves from the deed leads to a maelstrom of misinformation as the author takes us through a rabbit warren of dead ends and cover ups. The readers need to find out who to believe and what really happened gives the story impetus and the pages turn themselves deep into the night to the unexpected conclusion.
Well contrasting characters with a well thought out and clever plot, Gillian McAllister has come up with the goods yet again
Gillian, Gillian….you did it again 😂😂
Seriously, Gillian knows how to keep you on your toes….😬
That Night by Gillian McAllister starts with a bang 👇
During a family holiday in Italy, you get an urgent call from your sister. There's been an accident: she hit a man with her car and he's dead. She's overcome with terror - fearing years in a foreign jail away from her child. She asks for your help. It wasn't her fault, not really. She'd cover for you, so will you do the same for her? When the police come calling, the lies start. Who is going to crack under the pressure? What really happened? Dun dun dunnnnnnnn 😱
.
Gillian knows how to create great suspense and tension in her books. There were loads of twists and lies that really started making me sick and sweat which sounds gross. 😅 AHHHH she does it all so well! Such clever plotting and gripping writing. I loved and hated the characters. I empathised with them one minute and then wanted to punch them the next 🤣 It’s so family focused and poses such moral dilemmas. It is hard not to sympathise with the lengths you would go to in order to protect your own family! 😬 I’m not sure I would do some of that stuff for my sister but there you go!!! 😆 A lot of WHY ON EARTH DID YOU DO THAT moments 😂 I don’t want to say too much about the plot but let’s just say, things get messy…😬
Highly recommend That Night if you looking for a proper page turner this summer. Fans of Gillians will not be disappointed. She just keeps getting better. 🤩
This latest book from Gillian McAllister is absolutely brilliant. I have never been disappointed by any of Gillian’s books, I really don’t think she could possibly write a bad book !!
This latest book is one that shows how far families will go to protect each other. If you had a phone call in the middle of the night from your sister saying she’s just killed someone, what would you do ?
Siblings Cathy, Joe and Frannie all work together, their houses are next to each other and they holiday in Verona together, where they jointly own a holiday villa. And one evening they bury a body together !!
How will the secret they share affect their relationship ? Can they carry on as if nothing has happened ? Will one of them crack ? Can they successfully lie to everyone else to cover their tracks ?
This is a fantastic book about family relationships, lies, secrets and loyalty. I loved all of the characters in the book, which always makes me more invested in the book. If you love your twists and turns then this book won’t disappoint. Definitely a book to read this summer !!
Thank you to Penguin Michael Joseph UK and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
The Plant family are very close. They work together in a vet practise playing to their strengths- Frannie the receptionist & people person, Joe the surgeon& Cathy the diagnostic expert. Their mother, although not really hands on is still a partner. The three siblings live in a row of cottages & own a villa in Verona for holidays. Along with Lydia, Joe's wife & Paul, Frannie's son they enjoy their time- until the night Frannie phones hysterical to say she has knocked someone over & can Cathy & Joe help? Between the three of them they clear up & bury the body in the woods,(as you do??? ) Understandably, things are not the same after that! Once back home the three of them find that things are far from over.
I love Gillian McAllister's books, they always make the reader think- what would I do in that situation? I disliked Joe intensely! If anyone ever needed anger management training it was him! Poor Lydia! I felt that Frannie expected everyone to dance to her tune. Cathy was by far my favourite character. The trial was intentionally vague which kept me guessing. This was a terrific read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
During their holiday in Italy, siblings Joe and Cathy receive a phone call from their sister Frannie asking for help because she killed a man. As the siblings have always been inseparable they work together to bury the body. However, once they return to England they become tangled in their lies.
I really liked the atmosphere and setting of this plot, enjoying McAllister's writing style. The plot is fast paced with chapters told from Cathy and Joe's points of view, changing from past to present which added to the intrigue of the development of the story. I felt that all the characters were unreliable narrators which also added to the tension. However, I did struggle to connect to the characters so wasn't invested in their fates and I also found some parts of the plot predictable.
I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy fast paced and easy to follow thrillers.
A huge thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unedited feedback.
Synopsis: Picture a nice family holiday to an Italian villa with your siblings... then imagine one of them calling you in the middle of the night to say they've killed someone. How much does family mean when there's a murder?
My thoughts:
I could not get enough of this book! I read it over a week or so, just reading a few chapters at a time, and yet there was always something new hanging over the siblings, or some new information about the case. I was hooked. The plot really took suspense to the next level 😳
Gillian is so talented in the way that she writes in the time after the accident, but also the court case, and keeping us out of the loop with who is in court.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and she really took the story to its full potential, and more! The talented writing meant that I changed my opinion on each sibling multiple times!
This is my third Gillian McAllister book from NetGalley. The previous two didn't quite hit the mark for me and I'm left after this one also with a feeling that it wasn't third time lucky either.
The premise of the book is interesting but the story felt a little pedestrian to me and didn't spark my interest.
If I were to quickly summarise - the family interactions felt a little overdone to be bordering on too much of the mundane detail without really giving them further characterisation.
I got to the end of the book but it was perhaps in hindsight too far away from my usual crime fiction/thrillers to get me wanting to pick it up at any point, so I'm really sorry but it felt like a bit of a struggle overall.
As ever however, many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the preview copy.
This was a gripping story that I just wanted to keep reading, Gillian is a brilliant author who keeps you so caught up in the story you can’t put it down. Nothing is straightforward with twists and unexpected events happening. I like a book where you think you can see all that will happen but then it surprises you and you realise the author has taken you up the wrong road. Very well written and another best seller on the way.
Thanks to Gillian McAllister, Penguin Michael Joseph UK and NetGalley for the ARC of That Night.
I loved the synopsis for this book - whilst on holiday in Verona, two siblings Joe & Cathy receive a manic call from their sister Frannie in the early hours - she's hit someone with her car and now they're dead. She was on the wrong side of the road and she panicked, calling them rather than an ambulance. Knowing that she could go to prison and leave her young son without a mother, they decide to cover it up, burying the body and keeping that night a secret.
What follows is a pretty tense and atmospheric read which begs the question, how far would you go to protect the ones you love? Once you tell one lie, one untruth, one twist of reality, how easy is it to keep the lie alive and what do you lose as a result?
The book is told through various perspectives and duel timelines - one in the past and the other in the present day with Jason - a solicitor preparing for trial.
I found the first half of this book utterly gripping and couldn't put it down. For the second half however I did feel it lost a little energy and some of the twists and reveals weren't as shocking as perhaps they could have been. That said, I really enjoyed the book overall and would give it a solid 4/5 stars!
Is there anyone you would hide a body for? Is there anyone you would trust to cover up your crime?
‘That Night’ is the story of the Plant family whose family holiday in Verona takes a dark turn when Frannie accidentally kills a man. Siblings Joe and Cathy decide to help her cover up the incident because if you can’t trust family, who can you? Things quickly go from bad to worse for the family though because after that night the lies get more complicated and loyalties are strained.
I love a Gillian McAllister thriller and I have loved seeing her develop in her writing style over the past few years. Even though I may be a little biased, ‘Than Night’ is a new favourite for me and should definitely be on this year’s ‘holiday must read’ list. It is a perfect balance of a moral dilemma and a gripping, twisty thriller.
The pacing is perfect and McAllister’s depiction of the siblings shows the complicated intricacies that come with a close family and the ripples of repercussions after a tragedy.
‘That Night I learned how far I’d go to protect my sister…’ - cover tag line.
My thanks to Penguin U.K. - Michael Joseph for granting my wish for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘That Night’ by Gillian McAllister in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second novel that I have read by Gillian McAllister and it once again proved a highly engaging psychological thriller. I won’t say too much about the plot as I always feel that this kind of novel is best read without too much advance details.
One hot summer night during a family holiday in Italy, Joe and Cathy Plant receive a phone call from that will change their lives forever. Their sister Frannie has had a car accident on a quiet country road. A man is dead and she needs their help. Rather than report the accident, they decide to bury the body and cover up the death.
They are a close family, Joe and Cathy are veterinarians and Frannie is the receptionist for their family practice. They are caring people and yet now they have committed a number of serious crimes. When they return to England, Frannie, Joe and Cathy become increasingly entangled in the lies that they’ve been telling.
Like many in this sub genre, the narrative shifts between a number of character’s viewpoints with some chapters set in the present, ‘Now’, and others in the past, ‘Then’. It took me a little while to adjust to these shifts, even though clearly indicated. Overall, I found it well paced and tightly plotted with strong characterisations and satisfying twisty bits.
‘That Night’ was one of those psychological thrillers that proved so gripping that once I started reading I found it almost impossible to put down.
A great summer read.
A group of siblings whilst on holiday in Italy cover up a car accident where one of them failed to stop and ended up killing the man as they were on the wrong side of the road. One thing led to another and they ended up burying the victim and acting as if nothing had happened. The siblings Joe, Cathy and Frannie run a veterinary practice back home with their mother who works part time. They were interviewed by the police after the man was reported missing- a man they had briefly met in the marketplace the day before as there was a small altercation about him smoking. Alternate chapters are “then” and “now”, then being in Italy and now back home in England. I enjoyed this but for me it didn’t quite have that usual air of tension all the way through of other books by this author which I have devoured and loved. It was as if there was just that little something missing from the first 50% of the book which I can't quite put my finger on.( that said about 80% of the way in OMG…) It's well written ( as ever) and the plot is well thought out. Maybe it's the changing from “then” to “now” ?? Anyway, it’s a great plot and one to keep your grey cells thinking as for most of the book it appears obvious as to the ending… and then it doesn’t is all I'm saying! A well crafted read and a thoroughly enjoyable one.
Three exceptionally close siblings are faced with an unimaginable dilemma. Drawn together by a past family tragedy, they help their youngest sister, but at what cost to themselves and their sibling relationships?
The story of their closeness, what motivates them and how they are affected by their decisions that night are explored in fascinating detail. The settings and characters are relatable, adding to the story's believability. The fast pace engages as the suspense's intensity builds to the surprising twists which resonate.
I received a copy of this book from Penguin Books UK - Michael Joseph via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
One night on holiday in Italy, Joe and Cathy receive a panicked call from their sister Frannie. She tells them that she has killed a man and needs their help. Coming from a close-knit family, and knowing the effect this would have on Frannie’s young son, the siblings make the life-changing decision to help her bury the body. As the reality of what they have done starts to set in and the lies and secrecy begin to cause friction between the three, their lives begin to unravel with dire consequences.
There were parts of the story that I found extremely frustrating, but frustrating in a good way – exactly the way an intense thriller should feel. That Night is a completely addictive, intricate and fun read. It’s the perfect summer thriller and what I loved the most was that it didn’t take itself too seriously. There were several twists that were genuinely unexpected, plenty of drama and it was cleverly plotted – a combination that made me enjoy every second of this book.
Thanks to NetGalley & Penguin Michael Joseph UK for the opportunity to read in exchange for an honest review.
