I was very disappointed with this book. I loved the sound of it, but couldn't get over my dislike or disinterest in some characters, and I found it all too slow. Really sorry, not for me.
Gillian McAllistister is my go-to author when I am in the mood for an excellent psychological thriller. I just simply love her style of writing!
That Night tells the story of a group of siblings that receive a call from one sister in the middle of the night explaining she has killed a man and needs their help. Gillian drops the reader straight into the action from chapter one, making this plot both appealing and engaging.
As the plot evolves, the reader is taken on a rollercoaster discovery of the siblings dynamics and anyone who likes character analysis will love this book. I was eager to find out more about the family as each personality was slowly but flawlessly exposed, along with the strengths and weaknesses.
I found myself having to put this down for a few days at a time, as other commitments prevented me from picking this up, but this is not in any reflection at all to the book. I often found myself jaded that life was stopping me from finishing this!
The only reason why this is not a five star read for me is because I have read better books from this author, and this is not my favourite by her. However, please do not let my personal preferences put you off picking this up, as this is very well worth a read.
What would you do if your sibling called you in the middle of the night to tell you they’d accidentally killed someone? Would you help them? Cathy and Joe both helped Frannie hide the death she caused and the story covers the aftermath of that decision. The guilt, the ever increasing web of lies and deceit.
I didn’t like any of the characters, none were sympathetic. But it begs the question. What would you do and what lengths would you go to in order to protect the people you love?
One of my favourite things about reading a Gillian McAllister novel is they make me think "what would I do?", and it's not a fleeting thought! These stories get inside my mind and I can happily be making up scenarios and solutions for myself for days.
The events of That Night begin with a panicked phone call from Frannie to her siblings Cathy and Joe - she has accidently killed a man. They are staying in their family home in Verona, Italy and the incident has occurred on their grounds. Their reaction to this has far reaching consequences and like a stress fracture in a glass the fallout expands and spreads while the reader watches and waits for the inevitable shatter.
The author continues to keep you on your toes throughout the story alternating between the past and present and the different characters. You get an insight into everyone involved and how they have come to their decisions. Ultimately That Night is about family, sibling rivalry and deceit. What would you do!?
An intriguing thriller, three siblings, who all work together and live in three cottages next door to each other are on holiday together in their family villa in Italy. Something happens there one night that will change all their lives forever. The story in told in two time lines, then and now. It is a cracking read, with surprising twists as the past comes back to haunt them. Lies, secrets and deceit, it certainly has them all!
This book took me a really long time to get into but it was definitely worth it!
The story of three siblings, that are far too close to each other, has lots of twists that you won't see coming.
No - DNF for me. Not sure if it was a bad timing of picking this up (reading a few thrillers atm) but could find an urge to read it. Characters were basic and the writing wasn't creative enough for me. Annoying characters and no sense of adventure. Sorry! :-(
I love all of Gillian McAllister's books so I had huge expectations for this one. Although it was more of a slow starter for me than her previous books, once I settled into the story I really did enjoy it. The three siblings, Cathy, Jack and Frannie have their lives turned upside down by a single incident that happened one night in Verona whilst they were on holiday. What happened next was a life changing series of events, lies, deceptions and fear for every one of them. One lie leads to another until things are so completely out of control that there doesn't seem to be any positive outcome for any of them. It all started with Frannie whose singular act of causing a man's death brought her brother and sister into her web of deceit and the ripples from that night just kept spreading wider and wider. There were numerous twists and surprises to keep the pages turning and an outcome I wasn't expecting. None of he characters was very likeable so I didn't feel any sense of sympathy when their own selfish actions brought about their further woes. It was fascinating, though, to see just how it would all turn out. Gillian writes beautifully and the only thing spoiling that writing for me was the amount of what I consider to be unnecessary swearing. I get it when a character is angry or frustrated but it seemed to be incessant even in just everyday conversation which did grate on me. It may be just a personal thing but it does lose one star from my rating because of this . Otherwise another thrilling, page turning winner from this author. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
A twisty thriller, with the action beginning right on the first page. The plot flows well, and the author keeps you guessing as to what will happen throughout.
An absorbing, twisting escapist read.
Set in Verona, Italy, and Birmingham, the plot flits between time before and after a crime was committed. The author excels in tales which put you right in the action whilst questioning what you would do yourself. A classic, thrilling dilemma novel from one of the UK’s best writers in the genre. A recommended read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was an addictive read which drip feeds information as still the secrets unfold and not all is what it seems.
During a family holiday, Frannie phones siblings Joe and Cathy one night after she hits a man with her car and she thinks he is dead.
In the heat of an Italian night, the siblings have to make decisions which will change the course of their lives and the next day a police investigation is underway and they are all questioned.
This book is about sibling rivalry, jealousy, love and family as they the siblings try to navigate the situation they find themselves in, Each of them is trying to deal with their own anxiety and stress in their own ways - but I couldn’t put it down to find out if they managed to did so without cracking. There were so many parts of this book I wanted to say - end it now but their love for each other meant that they wanted to protect their secret for as long as possible.
There were a few twists in this book I didn’t see coming and thought it was expertly plotted and the sense of unease and apprehension was in every chapter.
This page-turner about sibling love and how far someone will go for a member of their family is a must read and I enjoyed the thrill, page after page.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
The idea behind this story is great and really makes you wonder what you (the reader) would do in the same circumstances.
The book starts off very strongly and really keeps you gripped. I did find though that the pace then really tailed off and it was less of a gripping page turner than I expected - more of a slow burn. It is still a good book and well written. Unfortunately I didn’t like a couple of the characters and found their behaviour and decisions annoying.
Overall I rated this an average read which is well worth trying but it didn’t massively excite me once the pace slowed down. I rated it a strong 3.5 stars but just not quite reaching a full 4 stars.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5
The night Frannie committed murder, but she didn't mean to. That night we helped her bury the body, what else could we do?
One hot summers night in Italy, Joe and Cathy Plant receive a phone call that will change their lives forever. Their sister Frannie has killed a man, and she needs their help. They were always close, some might say too close, siblings who worked together, lived next door to each other. And now they've buried a body together. But when they return to England, Frannie, Joe and Cathy become tangled in the lies they've been telling.
This is a character driven story with flawed and complex characters. We are drip fed the relevant information needed for us to understand precisely what has taken place. Written in the then and now format, and told by the three siblings perspectives, each one of the siblings had their own problems. This is a story about a tight family unit who openly show their loyalty, love and devotion to each other. But will that bee enough when the cracks start to appear? This well written, fast paced and twisted read that had me guessing all the way through.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #PenguinMichaelJosephUK ant the author #GillianMcAllister for my ARC of #ThatNight in exchange for an honest review.

Gillian McAllister never disappoints! A cleverly written psychological thriller, a slow burner, but the tension builds
Three siblings, Franny, Joe and Cathy Plant are extremely close, they work together, live in a row of cottages alongside each other, they holiday in Italy together, where one night everything changes with a phone call. How far would you go to protect a sibling? A huge moral dilemma, a murder is covered up
Great family dynamics, as one lie leads to another and so much more. Cracks in the sibling relationships begin to appear as the continue to try and cover their tracks.
This is a 5 star thriller which I highly recommend.
This started off quite slow and then got better. I loved the way through most of the book you had no idea who the narrator was. It all tied up nicely at the end.
I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
I was really excited for this book but felt a little let down.
I mean it was OK but it was far too slow paced for me. Too much of a slow burn for a thriller for me.
The book kept cutting back to the night of the crime, but from different perspectives which just made it seem really repetitive. I just kept reading similar things, and was just desperate for it to push the plot forward but I just don't think it did. It got me quite frustrated while I was reading. This didn't make me excited to pick the book back up each day - I just wanted to get through it. I wasn't intrigued or exciting to know what happened.
The book was OK - but I have read better thrillers.
A fast paced read with a great storyline. Good characterisation adds to the twists and turns and reveals. An enjoyable read.
My thanks to Net galley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy in return for an honest review .
I have read a few of this authors other books and enjoyed them but I really struggled with this one. I found the storyline quite boring and it struggled to get to the end. I found the characters unlikeable and very annoying.. Sorry but this one was just not my cup of tea. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
I received a copy of this e-arc in exchange for an honest review thanks to NetGalley and Michael J Books.
I started this a few weeks ago but I just couldn’t get into it so I decided to dnf. However, I was kinda intrigued to see how the story would play out that I gave it another go.
I have to say, these guys are the worst under pressure. I know it would be hard to mentally process what’s happened when someone you know has accidentally murdered someone but still!
That’s probably what I enjoyed the most about the book, the fact that it’s realistic.
It starts out as an accidental murder whilst on holiday and from this the family starts to unravel as a result of their secret. The aftermath is very interesting, I honestly didn’t expect the end result! Though, I really shouldn’t be surprised considering everything that happened throughout the book.
The big question is: what would you have done in that situation?
I absolutely loved this book! It was the best book I have read recently by a long way. I couldn't put it down. Very annoying when my kindle ran out of charge 20 minutes from the end and wouldn't boot up even when I plugged it in! Well recommended for a holiday read.
