Spy x family is funny and volume 4 just continues to make me laugh. A very feel good series and would recommend it.
With a family as the perfect cover for this spy, all that's missing is a pet dog!
In this latest installment of Agent Twilights' mission to save the country, he and the family set off to get a dog. Expectedly, things rarely go as planned when Anya is involved and her telepathy gets her into trouble. Loid is now on a mission to save Foreign Minister Brantz from an assassination attempt. All while Yor has to find Anya and save her from would-be child kidnappers. So just another day for the Forger family.
Misunderstandings abound, the Forgers are on a quest to get the perfect dog with many hiccups along the way. The story is funny as always with more focus on Anya and Yor in this volume. A new character adds an exciting mix to this gifted family. The dialogue focuses on other minor characters which is a nice change for readers. Anya is the star of this volume and does not disappoint. The illustrations capture the humor and expressive.
This volume was fun and a nice break from the main plot.
This series continues it's fun, campy, heartfelt, over the top antics and in this volume we get a Dog! Bu of course, not just any dog, but a dog that can see the future! The action sequences were fun, there's a ease for future complications with identity, and amid the explosions, kidnappings, and plots the family grows closer together. A fun read.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Every family needs a pet and of course with this cast their dog can't just be normal -- of course not.
I think every book gets better and better. I laugh every time I read these books!
Before you go running to doesthedogdie.com, let me reassure those of you who were as traumatized by Where the Red Fern Grows as I was - no dogs are harmed in this volume of Spy x Family. In fact, the addition of Bond the dog drastically increases the caper level of the book with his amazing doggy powers, which not only are able to rescue children and see the future, but also increase Anya's own adorableness factor a hundredfold.
The whole volume follows the same basic storyline - a group of disaffected (and probably too cool for you) college students thinks that it would really cool to reignite tensions between east and west, and to that end plan to use dogs put on the black market after a government experiment was shut down to bomb politicians into oblivion. Twilight hears about this through work channels and heads off to take the world's longest poop (excuses are not his strong suit) while Yor and Anya stumble onto the plot while looking to adopt a dog. The dog who will become Bond bumps into Anya, who reads his mind, and the two take off to put an end to a plot that might very well kill Loid, while Yor hares off after Anya, convinced she's been kidnapped by pedophiles. The result is one of the best spy caper stories in the series thus far, with everyone coming out thinking they've saved the day.
For my money? Anya saved the day, because ultimately she's the one who saved the dog. What can I say? I like a happy ending.
This One Is Little Anya's Show
This is the fourth "Spy x Family" book, and the series continues to entertain. Unlike with the first three books there is little attempt to repeat or even recap the premise or the characters' backstories, so this doesn't feel like a good place for a new reader to start. For regulars, though, there is plenty of action and wry humor. There is also a lot of Anya, which is fine by me. Husband/spy Loid rackets around saving the world and poor wife/assassin Yor is again underutilized, (I think she could be the strongest of the three main characters if given a chance), but the story, (both the pet dog story and the foiling of the terrorists story), is mostly told from Anya's point of view. Since Anya is a child, a telepath, and a smart cookie, the stories are always a bit more exciting and a little off-kilter, in a good way, when they're filtered through her.
So, as hoped and expected, this turned out to be a fine addition to the series and a fast-paced and entertaining ride.
(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Hot off of her successful acquisition of her first Stella, the Folger family is on the way to get a dog for Anya. They have no success at a pet store (completely stocked with agency dogs and run by the agency), so Yor and Anya try a pet expo while Loid gets feigns a bathroom emergency in order to slip away to his handler. Loid finds out that a foreign minister is in the country for peace talks, and there is a terrorist plot to blow up the meeting using highly trained — what else? — dogs! Anya, with her telepathic ability, accidentally discovers one of the terrorists’ lairs, but one of the highly trained dogs comes to her rescue. Anya sees brief glimpses inside the dog’s mind, and she realizes that this dog has a special ability! In their own separate ways, Yor, Loid with the agency, and Anya with the dog work against them terrorists in the name of World Peace.
While quite a bit of this series has had many laughs thanks to Anya’s telepathy, this volume was much more serious as everyone raced against the terrorists on many fronts. There were still plenty of Anya freak-out moments for outrageous facial expressions, but overall, this volume focused much more on the action that has been sprinkled throughout the previous volumes. Even though we added another character as we have every volume, the dog fits in so seamlessly within the narrative that the storyline paid much more attention to the terrorist plots and action than to quips and Anya eavesdropping on her parents’ thoughts. I feel this volume was a glimpse of what the rest of the series is going to be like after we have gathered all the new members of the Folger family.
Sara's Rating: 10/10
Suitability Level: Grades 10-12
Spy x Family continues to be one of the best Jump+ series. The introduction of family dog (and superpowered precognitive) Bond finishes out the lovely Forger family. The absolutely ridiculous hijinks that this family gets into while trying to keep their own secrets from each other are absurd in the best ways. As always, Endo's art is clean and lively. With the potential for an anime adaptation soon, every library with any sort of manga collection needs this series!
What can I say about Spy x Family, that you haven't heard of before? Every new volume makes me fall in love with each character a little more; including Bond the new member of the family. We find the Forgers in search of a pet, to encourage and congratulate Anya for how well she's doing in school. However, looking for a pet for a child who can read minds, a mother who is an assassin, and a dad who is a spy, is no easy task. At the last minute, Loid gets called for a mission, leaving Yor and Anya in the pet store. Which dog will Anya choose? A dog who has premonitions, what other dog is there for this perfect family. Not only do we get to introduce to the new member, we see why he's the perfect pet, protecting Anya, saving Loid and his mission, he's perfect. Can't wait for the next volume and see what adventures the Forgers family will have next.
Thank you to NetGalley, and VIZ for this ARC.

Spy x Family is written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo and has just about everything you could want. Comedy, romance, an attractive dad trying to be the best he can be, action, and espionage all wrapped into one title. Oh, and now there’s a dog. Spy x Family Volume 4 is localized in English and published under VIZ Media’s Shonen Jump imprint, with individual chapters available on the Shonen Jump app. This volume is translated by Casey Loe and features touch-up art and lettering by Rina Mapa.
Spy x Family Volume 4 collects Missions (chapters) 18-21 and has two bonus side missions. If you’re unfamiliar with the series thus far, it follows a fake family that is quickly becoming a real one. Loid Forger, codename Twilight, is a spy tasked with infiltrating a prestigious school to get close to his mark. To do so, he has to form a fake family. Enter Yor, codename Thorn Princess, an assassin with a brother in the Secret Police, and Anya, a telepathic orphan. Over the course of the last three volumes, we’ve seen the family grow closer, and the mission takes a backseat.
Now, in Spy x Family Volume 4, the Forgers look into adding a dog to their family, but this is no easy task. A day of shopping for a new addition is thrown into chaos when Twilight is called to simultaneously foil an assassination plot against a foreign minister. The perpetrators plan to use trained dogs for the attack, but Twilight gets help from his family in an unexpected way when one of the dogs trained for the attack comes to Anya’s aid.
Spy x Family Volume 4 highlights the best and worst parts of the series. The worst is small, and that’s the vague East/West Cold War espionage talk that sadly doesn’t hold my interest. While it is amusing to see Twilight in his element, the context around it is something I truly can’t make myself care about. And that’s because the way Endo writes the Forger family is this series’ strength.
While the start of the volume is heavy on the espionage, once Anya meets her future dog (pun intended), the story kicks into high gear both from an action and a family perspective. Anya is the one character who knows the truth about everyone. She knows that her mom is an assassin, that her dad is a spy, and does what she can to help mitigate their danger in their respective roles. That’s what makes her shine in this volume and pulls together the other parts of the story. Anya is the center of it all, and that’s why it works.
Endo’s ability to write dialogue from a child’s perspective and use a child’s view of the world to push humor and the story is on full display in this volume. While the last volume focused on Yor’s perspective as a mother and wife, this one focuses on Anya’s perspective and how she views the world and communicates with her new dog. This allows for simplistic solves for assassination plots and allows Yor to let her motherly love fuel her terrorist take-downs.
Additionally, Endo’s panels are action-packed but also humorous. The emotion from the characters are easily distinguished, and Anya’s eccentric expressions remain my favorite of any manga currently. There is a balance between action illustration and comedy that works extremely well.
Overall, Spy x Family Volume 4 continues to be a strong series and one of my favorites published from VIZ’s Shonen Jump imprint. Hilarious, heartfelt, and filled with intrigue and family shenanigans, the Forger family features some of the best characters out right now.
The cover is what drew me to this graphic novel. I wanted to know who the dog with the bow tie is. It turns out he’s awesome. Similar to James Bond, this spy dog is named Bond! I laughed so hard when I read the dog was named Bond.
I love spy movies, spy comics, and books. This book is full of fun spy references. If you enjoy Bond movies you will enjoy this graphic novel.
I’m not the biggest fan of black and white art in graphic novels. Spy stories in particular need color to compliment the rich story. I would have liked to have seen Bond the dog in color. Maybe a later volume of this book can be in color.
The manga artwork was interesting too. At first I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it while reading a spy novel but the artwork actually grew on me. The sleek characters fit within this fun spy graphic novel.
I enjoyed this book. If you like Spy movies you will enjoy this fun graphic novel too!
Stay awesome and keep reading!
I swear this series only gets more fun and more adorable as time goes on.
SPYxFAMILY Volume 4 continues to be my current fave manga series. I was so delighted to be able to pick up this series and keep going. You don't even know how excited I was!
So, this time around:
1. Adorable family dynamics that will just make your heart SWELL.
2. Anya with the most expressive face of any child ever (seriously, you should see the look on her face when she sees all the dogs she doesn't like).
3. Cliffhangers... If you binge it like I did you will have no problem!
4. Some of the most amusing and fun visuals yet.
5. Insane spy sequences that reminds you this is quite the thriller of a manga!
6. The cover. That's it: A dog with a bowtie. That's all that needs to be said. Seriously, have you looked at it? Get me that cover in a frame and on my wall: it's adorable.
7. Spy references GALORE.
Overall, this is yet another fabulous addition to SPYxFAMILY and I need the next volume PRONTO!
Five out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
They...they have a DOG now...named Bond!!! And he wears a BOWTIE!! (SQUEE!)
Ok, I will TRY to not just GUSH all over this review, but THIS SERIES... I almost have no words for it. I LOVE the found family trope, I love fighting for a cause and I love the "will it end up as love" possibility. Ordered the entire series that exists so far from my store and will continue to recommend/push this series til the cows come home.
I LOVE the Mama Bear that comes out when Baby Cub is threatened.
And I REALLY hope we get to see more of Boss Lady. Sounds like she has some tragic backstory, that she is using to make her stronger, to fight so war doesn't happen. She's not just a good guy because she's good. She's trying to prevent others from having to go through what she went through. I really love how even the secondary characters are fully fleshed out and how you get to see glimpses of that as the story progresses.
5, I can't say enough positive about this book, stars. HIGHLY recommended. Four volumes out now (in English, if that is your language of choice for reading), so you can binge quite a bit before you are forced to stop.
Slight warning and spoiler, there IS violence in it and in this one, dogs were put into harms way by some horrible humans, but they ended up being saved. You do see a memory of the dog the Spy Family adopts and it wasn't a pleasant one, but at least you know he will be spoiled rotten by his new little girl owner, so his story has a happy ending.
Did I mention this was 5 stars? Because it is. But only because there isn't a higher star rating I can use. Wait, there is. ALL THE STARS!!!
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media/VIZ Media LLC an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
What an explosive volume! Plus the family is complete with the pet. I love this series with all of my heart and I highly recommend it. More thoughts to come on my Youtube Channel.

The family unit would not be complete without the obligatory pet. We get the adventures of Anya and her dog in this volume of various spy escapades. For those who are already enjoying the series to this point, this will not disappoint. Very much of the same tone, wit, and fun in its three-volume - now four - foray. For me, the volume felt slower than the others because Anya is center stage again. For those that like her, you'll love it, I think I just came out of it tired of the adorable little bundle of joy. Regardless, it is a fun adventure with a new member of the family, and I look forward to what is in store for the next installment.
Spy x Family is an amazing manga! I love it and can't wait for more to head this way. I love how this "family" has their own secret that they can't tell anyone and act normal about it. Now there's a dog with his own secret added to the mix.
I haven't always like graphic novels but this one is the one that changed my mind. Such a good one!!
Spy x Family is the best manga for anyone 10 and up. It has a little bit of everything and has a great premise and perfect execution. When I read the first volume I was pleasantly surprised and sometimes the subsequent volumes don't keep up but they sure do so far! I am so excited to read every page! There are even parts that make me react out loud, whether it be a laugh, an oof from action or a cringe from something embarrassing. I will be recommending Spy x Family to anyone who wants a new manga series to read. Each volume does leave me with a few questions about characters but nothing that I don't feel like won't be answered in the next one. I keep rooting for Loid, Yor and Anya and hope they get to keep being a family after the spy mission is over because they are just the cutest.
True Rating: 4.5 Stars!
I really enjoyed my read of this particular volume! For more details about this particular volume, please check out this video, where I go into detail about it, and some other volumes I read recently.

Dogs make everything better! This is the best book yet! Poor Loid seems like he will have to make some tough decisions soon, I hope we see more family dynamic in the next book to show them growing closer.
