I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Christian really gave the characters meaning.
I was left wondering about the technology in the book as not being that savvy but he explains it so well.
One of the best science fiction novels that I have read in along time.
There is murder intrigue and full blown action.
I highly recommend this book.
The description of this book was a cat and mouse thriller and on that level it was a good read.
I hadn't realised how much futuristic, technological and complex writing there was within it and I struggled to follow much of it. If I had known this then I would not have chosen it.
I'm sure the writing and science aspect was very clever, there were some interesting views on how the future had developed and the interactions between the characters was well written and very believable.
The plot was intriguing with good twists.
So if you are into Sci Fi I'm sure you will enjoy it, it's just not a genre I. choose to read.
I have not read this author before and struggled at first to get in to the story. Then it grabbed me and I could not put it down. No spoilers and rereading a couple of chapters to make sure I had followed it correctly as things came out of nowhere and left me reeling.
I will definitely be on the look out for more books by Christian.
Sceienc based but so believable.
I enjoyed this novel, and found it fast paced and exciting. Quinn, the main character, was well written.
Sci-Fi not really my thing - or so I thought. This book folded future tech into a plot we have all seen before but the story remained human to the point where I was surprised that all the emotions and insecurities of our main protagonist, CIA Analyst Quinn Mitchell, were exposed alongside such a futuristic storyline. Tasked with the hunt for an Elite Assassin and his motivation in carrying out serial killings of victims that are somehow linked, the strings of manipulation slowly unravel as we enjoy her chase around the globe for the high living killer.
Enjoyed the foray into something different (for me) and my thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph and NetGalley for the ARC
Apologies but this book was not really for me,I skipped a lot of the tekky speak and have no real interest when reading in Sci-Fi although don't mind reading about things in the ‘future’ ,it seemed to me if you like this kind of read it would be brilliant but as say just nit my kind of read
Oh dear. The publishers of this book invited me to read it. They thought I might enjoy it based on my previous reviews. I’m sure I’ve said more than once that I don’t do sci-fi, complicated jargon, time travel, or anything set in the future. The majority of the language was mumbo jumbo to me. I didn’t understand it, didn’t like it, and couldn’t read it. There seem to be lots of readers who absolutely loved this book. Sorry, but I’m not one of them.

This is a book that I have been intrigued by since the cover reveal. It’s safe to say that I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this gem. I have to say a huge thank you to Michael Joseph for my copy of this one.

This is a novel with multiple threads to unravel. I have to admit the scientific jargon of this one was completely above my head and lost me in a number of places.

This is a well thought out novel with great premise. However the ending has felt rushed and it is over detailed in places.

This book had a fascinating science fiction and futuristic vibe which I really liked and I was really drawn into this aspect. I loved the ingenious way the science was part of the story and really well thought through and thought provoking, particularly the forensics. I am a forensics graduate and a bit of a self confessed geek so maybe that’s why I liked it so much and the plausibility and techy jargon.
The serial killer aspect of the storyline was also engaging and felt original and interesting. There is a slight but….. for some reason I wasn’t totally drawn in by the narrative - there are moments of absolute brilliance but these were a little stop start for me so I limped a little to the finish line but overall I’m glad that I did. Definitely original and something for those who like something a bit different.
I enjoyed this book as it was a little different to some of the books I’ve read recently. This made a refreshing change. The story was well written and kept me interested all the way through. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Scorpion! I’ll be the first to admit the science-y bits could be a bit hard to follow for me at times, but I was still eager to keep reading and see where it was all going. Proper techno thriller, loads of things happening and a diverse cast of characters! Definitely one to add to your list if you’re a fan of these kinds of speculative techno thrillers!
Scorpion was not what I expected and I found it a difficult book to get into... far too techy for me and I skipped through a lot of the jargon, which was quite a lot of the content. I found the protagonist, Quinn, rather tiresome so all in all, not a book for me, sorry!
This took me well out of my comfort zone, indeed I read the first few pages and gave up twice!! Then I thought, if I forget the Tom Cruise/ Minority Report references, and The Terminator/ time travel ideas, I might stand a fighting chance! Which, is what happened, it became a brilliant murder mystery that I enjoyed! Okay, some later pages were skipped, other times I wasn’t sure if some of the scientific items were real or fictional, but most of what I read, I did enjoy.
It wasn’t quite 50 ways to kill a person, but the murders were highly inventive and executed intelligently ( pardon the pun) .Each death didn’t seem to be related to the others that preceded them, the only similarities were, the age at death was younger than the last one, and a number was printed upon the body, no spoilers available I may have switched off momentarily by then!
I loved the Elite Assassin character, the most interesting person in this book. Quinn as a name, who the heck thought of that one? There were brilliant chase sequences and the concept of everything being available for the Super, Super Rich, would that be as nice as implied? It all seemed so cold and impersonal, but perfect for protection from the law.
My son in law loves this genre, spends a lot of time on fantasy games and books, so, that’s his 40th birthday present sorted. I shall have to plaster a fixed smile upon my face when he takes it upon himself to explain this book to me. Which he will do, sure as eggs are eggs!
I have really appreciated the chance to read this novel, this would not normally have found a place on my reading list. I’m probably too old for this target reading audience, but what I read and understood, I enjoyed.
Thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph UK, and Netgalley for my ARC, in return for my honest review. I will post reviews later and a copy of this novel will be bought as a present in August.
SCORPION is a super sci-fi romp, if a little over technical at times. It also provides a scary glimpse at what our future could be like. Gripping and unsettling but hugely entertaining, this is a fantastic crime thriller and murder mystery with brilliant characters.
I really enjoyed Scorpion - a techno thriller with time travel elements plus a serial killer- it was great fun and plays out movie style with enough scifi geekery keeping it interesting and a group of characters who run around trying to sort out an ever evolving set of problems and all of whom have various agendas.
Speculative and randomly complex the plot fairly rocks along although action is more low key, this being a more cerebral thriller in a techno babble kind of way.
The ending suggests more to come. I liked the twisty sense of this so I'll happily come along for the ride.
Around the world, twenty two people have been murdered. The victims fit no profile, the circumstances vary wildly but one thing links them all: in every case the victim is branded with a number. With police all around the globe floundering and unable to identify any pattern, let alone find the killer, CIA Analyst Quinn Mitchell is called in to investigate.
I quite liked this book. This sci-fi thriller is set in the near future. The book starts off with CIA Analyst Quinn Mitchell hunting down a serial killer, but a twist in the book, takes an unforeseeable turn.
The characters are complex with motives that are never completely explained. The pace is steady and the second half is action packed. It's quite hard to review his book without giving away any spoilers. There's plenty of twists, but some of them are predictable. This is a fascinating read.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #PenguinMIchaelJoseph and the author #ChristianCantrell for my ARC of #Scorpion in exchange for an honest review
I found this a very hard and difficult book to read. Never relaxing as you are bombarded with sci-fi terminology and long text not speech paragraphs. I have to admit that I did not know whether terms and items were all sci-fi or whether any exist today
However, There are a couple of absolutely superb bits that completely surprised me and there are some good interactions between characters.
On the whole though not really a book for me to really like or appreciate.
Would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
A very technical book that I am afraid I just kept getting lost in the details ... so much descriptive detail that I kept losing my. At
Sorry not one for me
Mmmm. Yes I enjoyed this book. No I wouldn’t have chosen it as the plot is a familiar one. But it’s well written and worth a read.
Quinn is a analytical specialist with the CIA (someone has to be), having finished a job saving the Planet from a nuclear attack or more she is reassigned to find a serial killer. Same work difference is the target or objective probably a better word. But please don't get put of by any of that this is a fun and fast paced Thriller that I loved. A busy serial killer that doesn't seem to slow down in a new hi tech and bust world.
Quinn has had a hard time of things and they get tougher but they have to, or there would be no story would there? Having lost her daughter and then husband because of it all when she is connected to Henrietta a soft side is seen and Henrietta is no normal child but a Super Wizz Kid with the CIA (conveniently) she knows her way around just about everything but is still a child who collects Pokemon think that's spelt right!. She is also lovable despite all of that. But as you'd expect not everything is as it seems as in there are several great twists that add extra spice.
This has it all with the twists come some interesting characters I mean that in the real sense they are great but all pleasant but they will surprise you and that is another bonus and why it is well deserving of 5 stars I hope you agree and that you really enjoy this thriller.
