I really enjoyed the first few chapters of this. I has a very different tone to Three Women. Rather than being very exact and factual, Taddeo opts for a more visceral stream of consciousness like tone.
The main character sounds incredibly unlikeable and flawed. I really like the anti-hero/flawed protagonist trope! Im excite dot see where this story will go but I’m intrigued already.
I’ll definitely be preordering a copy of this!
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for my free excerpt.

I loved Lisa Taddeo's book Three Women so was very excited to see she has written a novel. The book started with a bang, quite literally, and was gripping from the get-go. I really like the writing style and I'm intrigued about what happens next and I have no idea where it's going to go. I feel like it's one of those books likely to give you lots to think about afterwards.

I really enjoyed this short extract of Animal! I'm so curious about the narrator already - can't wait to read more.

I really enjoyed this short extract from Animal, and it has made me even more excited to read the full book when it is released. It's been on my radar for a while so this was a great preview of what is to come.

I really enjoyed Lisa Taddeo's Three Women so much that I've already read it twice and I'm sure I will read it again and again over the years so I was excited to see that the published and Netgalley had an extract of Animal available for early reading!
I only read the short extract but I was pulled straight into the narrator's life, and I immediately wanted to know more. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

I enjoyed this early extract of 'Animal', and am grateful to the publisher for making it available here.
The narrator's voice was seriously intriguing: detached, cynical, intelligent, and kind of ruthless. I wasn't always sure what she was talking about, but I was convinced by the way she was saying it, and loved her no-bullshit attitude and the way she addresses the reader directly.
What struck me the most about this extract is how fast-paced it was (especially chapter 1 in this two-chapter extract) -- which left me wary of the novel becoming a little too chaotic. Already, by the end of chapter 2, I was struggling a little to follow, and felt bombarded by new information, names, locations, and changing settings. Are we talking about a suicide? A past relationship? Her dead parents? Her moving across the country? I ended up feeling a little overwhelmed, and was reminded of something Brandon Taylor and Halimah Marcus mentioned in a webinar hosted by Electric Literature: that many stories suffer from 'the attack of the backstory second paragraph'. Chapter 2 was very anxious to hint at various narrative questions, but it happened too fast for me -- and before Chapter 1 was entirely clear. I'm also usually not the biggest fan of a lot of hinting and teasing for future revelations, and I think this pairs badly with chatty narrators (whereas it feels more justifiable with taciturn narrators/third person). I don't know when the many uncertainties raised by these two chapters are. addressed in the novel, as I've only read this extract. Soon, hopefully!
I won't be adding this book to my list, but I think readers with a little more patience than me will enjoy this narrator's fierce and intriguing voice.

Loved the extract, looking forward to reading the whole book. There is so much intrigue in the sample!

Obsessed already! This dark and seductive character is the type to hook me straight away - I NEED to find out what Joan gets up to next! An excellent intro that gave just enough nuggets of info and spice to build the bones of what looks to be a very intriguing story.

The extract has piqued my interest and there seem to be many strands to Joan's story. I am keen to know more about what lead to her leaving town in a rush and what she hopes to find.

I loved Three Women so much, so I was so excited when I had the chance to read an extract of Animal!
This won’t be a long review just because I feel like I couldn’t form a true opinion without reading the full book. However I was definitely not let down and I will be reading the full book when possible!
For now I will rate this 4 stars, just because I liked what I read so far and I am looking forward to reading the full thing.

I need to read more of this!
That extract wasn't enough. I need to know Joan is depraved and how she got to be that way.
The characterisation is nothing less than superb. Exactly what I expect after Three Women.
Can't wait to read the whole thing.

Only gained access to the exclusive extract, intriguing characters, want to know more, will be looking out for the full book whether that’s via NetGalley or purchased.

Right from the opening sentence this draws you in and encourages you to read on. The writing is sharp, engaging and pulls no punches. Complex relationships and entangled encounters, I am certainly intriugued by just having read the opening to this story. Just from this explosive beginning, we are clearly in for a treat come publication date!

I absolutely can not wait to read the rest of this. I loved Three Women and the extract of this book had me totally hooked right from the opening line. I love her gutsy writing. No softening anything even when it is vile. There is something utterly wonderful about that.

Lisa Taddeo’s writing always leaves me wanting more immediately. I cannot wait to read the full title!

Intriguing opening, interesting writing style and a fascinating character. Will definitely read the full novel.

Woah, the book's opening sentence! Very nice start.
I read the extract twice. I need more to really decide what I think of the book. It was too little a preview. Did it peak my interest? Yes? Do I want to read the full book? Yes. Roll on Summer 2021. Let me discover this Animal. Joan.

Taddeo’s writing style is sharp, focused and intense. The opening lines of the book are completely gripping and I read this short extract in one sitting. The main character, Joan, is a strong woman depicted as deprived and I cannot wait to know more about her and her story.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this extract.

Having LOVED her previous book, this extract from Lisa Taddeo's most recent work showcases her talent for writing engaging and original stories. Starting out with a bang - quite literally -, 'Animal' looks as though it has the capability to be a profound story of struggle, survival and redemption. The world Taddeo depicts is harsh and messy, complicated but full of emotion. I am super excited to see what the rest of the novel holds.

I find myself intrigued by Lisa'Taddeos writing style. Her previous book Three Women described as non fiction reads like a work of fiction.
Animal, her first novel judging merely on the basis of this short early extract reads like extremely descriptive non fiction.
I'm very eager to read this work in full in order to compare the two.
Thanks to the publisher for allowing me to read this sampler of the forthcoming release.
