Thank you to Netgalley and Abrams Books for Young Readers for the free book.

I thought this was going to be a fascinating read about an important man in America's indigenous history, but it was a very dry read that I struggled to pay much attention to. I don't think kids are going to enjoy this very much.

The story of John Horse is certainly an interesting one, and there are not enough books out there that discuss Black Native Americans. A lot of research and factual information has clearly gone into this. I wish there were some sidebars or definitions to explain some of these terms and concepts as the book went to youth. I think they may get a little lost in all of the facts without that bit of help. The text also reads heavily like a textbook which I worry will turn some readers away.
