Took me a while to get into it but once I did it was a well paced and enjoyable entertaining read. Good debut book from Vera Kurian. Set around college students, psychopaths and likeable characters.. Chloe is a fun character to follow as she's funny and her psychopathic tenancies, lack of empathy and guilt, lead her to just get on with her life. Original and fresh storyline.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I’m not sure what it says about me but I absolutely love books about psychopaths and if they are female – all the better, so when I heard about this book and read the blurb it appealed to my darker side.
Never Saw Me Coming is the story of Chloe Sevre, a pretty and bubbly freshman who has just started University. She’s excited about making new friends, fitting in with the right crowd, going to as many parties as possible and killing Will Bachman! What sets Chloe aside from her fellow students is that she is a real fully diagnosed psychopath and is taking part in a secret clinical study alongside 6 other psychopaths run by a renowed psychologist in the University.
These seven student psychopaths are not supposed to meet each other or interact but when two of the group are murdered within the first few weeks of term, Chloe tracks down the remaining group in an attempt to stop the killer so she can continue her own personal deadly agenda.
As pyschopaths have a tendancy to lie, have an inability to show remose or empathy and unable to distinguish between right and wrong, it was highly amusing to watch Chloe try to build up friendships and relationships with the rest of group and their ability not to trust each other resulted in some entertaining but inappropriate circumstances.
This is a fun and entertaining book with a loveable main character and whilst I don’t agree with murdering your classmates, when you find out more about Chloe’s past and why she wants to kill Will, you have even more sympathy towards her.
Never Saw Me Coming is the debut novel by Vera Kurian and if you like your books full of gruesome murders, some very unreliable narrators and an original storyline then I think you will enjoy this book.
Absolutely fabulous debut. It’s got everything from psychopaths to idiotic people who you can’t help but side with the bad guy against. I raced through this and now I’m sad! I’ve just downloaded a short story by her which I’m about to start. Seriously brilliant and extremely well written. I’d give it 6 stars if I could.
A change to my usual type of reading this was a refreshing change of pace. The novel was entertaining and the premise was fresh. Chloe is a fun character to follow as she doesn’t have the empathy or guilt most people feel, so she isn’t second guessing herself all of the time. She’s also wickedly funny. The book was at its strongest when it focussed on her POV
…
The book is a little slow to start, and it took me a second to work out all of the different characters, particularly as it jumps around POV, but once I did I enjoyed the ride, even if it does feel a little drawn out at the end whilst the climax is over quickly. The identity of the killer keeps the reader guessing and there’s a few red herrings along the way, but I did guess the answer a little earlier than I imagine I was supposed to. This isn’t to say the book wasn’t enjoyable I felt it could have been a little tighter. It also read a little more YA than I was expecting

If you like this genre of book I think you’d probably like this one too. It’s not a perfect thriller, but with some interesting characters to take you through the story it has a fun and dark humour to it that carries throughout the novel. They may be psychopaths with some questionable motives but they will win you over! It’s also a strong debut novel, and I look forward to what the author does next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK for this ebook to read and review
Fantastic. It was a little Dexter goes to college and I loved it.
I was fascinated by the mind processing of Chloe, André and Charles and even more interested in their relationship with each other and others around them.
Even though you knew how charming and manipulative their personality was, it wasn't until André pointed it out that I realised I was agreeing with the psychopaths.
I had to have a good long talk with myself in the mirror.
Wonderfully paced plot and the reveals weren't too sudden or incongruous.
I enjoyed the authors writing style and will be looking for more by them.
Excellent.
Please read the Blurb of the book as here is only my opinion
Content warnings: psychopathy, mass murder, rape, child abuse, child neglect, casual sex.
I really liked the idea of the story as I thought was somehow refreshing for a Young adult audience, having said that I think the book would be better suited for people 17 years old and older.
Fast paced and packed full with action and mentions to modern social media, loads of twists and turns and many characters, so it’s very easy to get lost amongst the various narrators and points of view. I had to go back few times to make sure I was reading from x person or y person just to realised it was somebody else.
Some characters are more “likeable” or “relatable” than others which make it very realistic (just like school) my main issue with the book is the lack of “background” we get from each character and I think that’s why it’s easy to get confused as we don’t really get to know them.
It was a very enjoyable read Perfect to start the “Spooky/ Halloween” season.
This was so refreshing and utterly gripping. I feel a little guilty that I am loving reading about psychopaths so much at the moment, but honestly this is such an unexpected hit for me. Chloe was such a fabulous anti-heroine and I cannot recommend it enough.
This was an entertaining read! Very original storyline, although it took me a while to get into the book at first, but I'm glad I kept going. Overall a good thriller.
You’re about to undertake a flight/train journey… but you forgot your book. So you buy this from Smith’s at the station ‘cause the premise sounds great. And you devour it during the journey, barely even stopping to look at your social media ‘cause it’s enthralling enough to stop you doing so. You have a lovely time, then you arrive at your destination and it’s kind of a case of: out of sight, out of mind. You’ll remember this book fondly from time to time, but it won’t alter your life in any way. That’s what this was for me.
The premise really is great, and totally up my street. But the execution was kind of Riverdale-esque - I feel like things could have been tightened up so much more and explained in more depth to give us a greater understanding of the characters, their motives and their backgrounds. Parts which deserved more attention felt rushed, and I could have done with a bit more at the very end. Overall though, I really enjoyed this one.
Neat pacy thriller about a program for psychopaths at an American College. They are secreted amongst the student population so they can be studied. But when they start to be murdered is it possible the killer is outside the program ? Well plotted and pacy, entertaining read.
Monsters walk amongst us ★★★☆☆
Chloe and Andre, new starters at John Adams University, are on a very special programme which studies psychopaths and trains them in normal behaviour.
Chloe is there for one reason: get revenge and get away with it. However Plan A starts to get derailed when students are murdered. Students on the same secret programme…. Who are the other test subjects? Can you ever trust a psychopath, even if you are one too?
To begin with, Chloe and Charles are unpalatable and chilling. However, both are eerily charismatic characters even once we know how little emotion they feel. We want Chloe to have her revenge and get away with it and also to catch the killer stalking the campus.
The identity of the other participants and of the killer keeps us on our toes although I wonder whether some of the other suspects would have made for a better ending than the complex grand reveal.
A tense and chilling thriller for readers with strong nerves.
A fantastic read!
This books is like nothing I’ve read before- so unique and clever. I loved the descriptive settings and scenarios and the characters are in intriguing and surprising likeable. Definitely a book I would recommend
Never Saw Me Coming was a much hyped book and once I read the synopsis I knew that I had to read it. A clever and unique thriller that kept me guessing, full of red herrings and surprises. It was dark, funny and really binge worthy. Highly recommend for lovers of the thriller genre.
Chloe is a freshman at college and there on a scholarship thanks to her participation in an ongoing trail - for psychopaths. Yep - Chloe is a psychopath and there are more of them at the college in the trial. She keeps this part of herself hidden well but she wants to know who else is like her. When there is a murder in the psychology department she has her first clue. She wants to find the killer, but her primary focus is to kill Will Bachman who also attends the school - but why? And will she succeed?
You need to read this on. It is fun to watch Chloe and her friends plot and plan to catch the killer, all while trying to fit in with everyone else..
Thanks to Random House UK and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.
There were some great ideas in this book but overall it felt like it was too much of a YA novel. I found the language used and dialogue a bit tedious at times .
I really struggled with this book in the beginning, I just found it a bit boring and it struggled to keep my attention. Went into too much unnecessary detail that didn't add to the story.
This was an interesting book but didn't live up to the description for me. It was well written and definitely suspenseful but there was just something missing
I’m honestly a bit on the fence with this one. Chloe is a diagnosed psychopath, and is accepted onto a study programme at college - paying her tuition fees in return for her part in the study. There are several other students participating in the study - each with their own reasons. Chloe’s reason is Will. Chloe wants to seek revenge on Will - and murder is the only revenge that will do.
So my issues with this book - firstly it is told from multiple POV - which I usually enjoy. However - and I don’t know if this is just the case on the ARC I received - there are no titles to each chapter. So you have to read a paragraph or two before you work out who’s POV you are hearing the story from. As a busy working who likes to be able to hop in and out of a book this made it quite difficult and it took me longer to get into it.
My other issue - is that I found it a bit predictable. It feels more YA than thriller - but it was enjoyable with lots of twists. It wouldn’t put me off reading books by this author in future.
The premise for this book is excellent and really had me interested before I even started.
I loved the detailed accounts of every day life, helped me understand that life with psychosis can work and manage day to day.
The book is gripping and the characters are excellent, I really enjoyed it.
I wasn’t sure when I started this book and wondered if I would continue. I persevered and was so pleased I did as it turned out to be a real thrilling read. I loved the fact it was set on a college campus which gave me a didn’t picture in my head. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
This was a cracking good story. It had me gripped from the first page and didn't let me off the hook until the last. One of those books you're itching to get back to.
The characters were credible, compelling and repelling in equal measure and the insight into the whole area of psychopathy was intriguing and cleverly woven into the story.
A minor (very minor) point was that a a British person reading the story, some of the American university acronyms were a bit lost to me, but didn't detract from the enjoyment of the overall story.
A great read and would love to read a sequel.
Highly recommend.
