Oh my! I need to read the rest of this book! What has happened to Grey??! These sisters really intrigue me! I’ve just ordered the book to read!
A stunning book - part fairytale, part horror. A true masterpiece of fiction! A unique take in a genre that has many different routes, and yet this book still arrives at a brand new destination. Krystal Sutherland has elevated herself amongst the masters, including Melissa Albert and V. E Schwab. A must-read for everyone that wants a dark take on a fairytale with a twist.
"Some people go missing because they want to; some go missing before they're taken. And then there are the others - those who go missing because they fall through a gap somewhere and can't claw their way back." House of Hollow p137
I loved this book it was macabre and so very gripping. Grey, Vivi and Iris are such engaging characters, between them every teenager (or adult) can find something to identify with. I really enjoyed the world Sutherland has created, its dark, twisted, imaginative and captivating. It feels like this book has only scratched the surface of what this world could contain. There were definitely some Fae vibes from pretty early on but it goes far beyond the old fairytales and legends.
The writing style is lyrical and very easy to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dark modern fairytales with elements of mystery and suspense.
The ending of the book has definitely left me wondering, if a sequel is in the works, the Hollow sisters stories could easily be continued on.
I loved this sample so much I went ahead and bought the ebook and read it in one sitting. Very excited to see what this author does next. This book is such an unique and kind of grotesque story. The characters and the 'mystery' were fascinating. I need more!!
This was only the sampler so I can't speak for the whole book but the small section that I read had me wanting more. The tense atmosphere sucks you in and there is something very compelling about the use of language.
I need moreeeee!!! this is beautifully written and so so captivating!! This was just a sampler so I can't wait to get to more!!
I love love loved the sampler and have already purchased the final copy to read it in full! So excited to see where the story goes!
I read the sampler and absolutely loved it! It’s a truly thrilling and enthralling read. The characters, the writing, the mystery and tension seeped off the pages and kept me intrigued.
Look forward to reading the full book.
Thank you Netgalley for providing the arc, unfortunately this was archived before I had the chance to read it. I look forward to starting It when I get the physical copy though!
Turns out, this was a preview. Which was not stated anywhere on the Netgalley page, not in the title, the description, nothing. So thank you Bloomsbury, the approval was appreciated but it would have helped if you'd explicitly stated that this was a preview.
Now THIS is how you do a modern fairy tale. Addictively dark, the underlying mystery of the sisters past and the depth of the characters pair beautifully, drawing a rich and vibrantly shadowed tale I just couldn’t put down.
This sampler left me wanting more. I loved every second and as soon as i finished i pre ordered the book so i could finish the story. I'm so excited to see where this book goes
First, this cover is so beautiful. Great book, This book is a story about three sisters that disappeared in Scotland as children. Highly recommended book. This book will make a great movie,
Honestly, since I read the blurb of this book I was so drawn to it and the cover made it even easier to draw me into it! Did I realise it was just an excerpt? No, I did not because I was too excited to request it, which brought me to pre-order it at midnight the day before release!
This mystery thriller will draw you in since the first few pages and the more you turn them, the more chapters you read, the more it creates a dark atmosphere that you feel the need to discover. Three close-knit sisters return home after a mysterious accident with no memory of it. But strange events don't stop there and the hollow sisters will deal with them their own way.
Can't wait to unwrap all the mysteries that Sutherland knitted in the story!
When I first heard about House of Hollow, I was immediately intrigued, because the storyline sounded so interesting. But, it hadn’t yet been released, and only a sample extract was available on NetGalley. So I took full advantage of the opportunity to get a glimpse of what was to be expected from the book.
From the extract that I read, this book is full of mystery, and a darkness that is clearly laying low, ready to be released. The Hollow sisters are all very different, secretive, but also tied together with an unbreakable bond, and I need to know more. Vivi is already my personal favourite, mainly because I feel like I can relate to her style and personality the most. The beginning of the story definitely sets you up for whatever is to come.
I loved this little extract, and I am desperate to read more, and to find out what happens to the 3 sisters. I have already purchased a copy of the full book since reading the extract, and I can not wait to jump back in!
I give the House of Hollows sample extract a 5 star rating.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Hot Key Books for providing me with a sample extract of the book, in exchange for an honest review.
House of hollow is an exquisitely creepy and twisted tale that's delightfully dark and atmospheric. Sutherland has crafted rich world building, luscious descriptions and a story drenched in sensory detail. It will swallow you whole and won't let you go until you finish the story. The story is also steeped in sisterly love to die for... This book will keep you up at night, keep you guessing and keep you glued to the pages. I loved. Every. Single. Sentence.
House of Hollow is a dark, twisty modern fairytale where three sisters discover they are not exactly all that they seem and evil things really do go bump in the night. Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow and her two older sisters, Grey and Vivi, are unquestionably strange. Ever since they disappeared on a suburban street in Edinburgh, Scotland as children only to return a month later with no memory of what happened to them, odd, eerie occurrences seem to follow in their wake. Each was also left with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats seemingly from their time away. And they're changing. First, their dark hair turned white. Then, their blue eyes slowly turned black. They have insatiable appetites yet never gain weight. People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous. But now, ten years later, Iris Hollow is doing all she can to fit in and graduate high school on time--something her two famously glamourous globe-trotting older sisters, Grey, a fashion icon and supermodel and Vivi, a recognised musician, never managed to do. But when eldest sister Grey goes missing without a trace under highly suspicious circumstances, leaving behind bizarre clues as to what might have happened, Iris and Vivi are left to trace her last few days. They aren't the only ones looking for her though. As they brush against the supernatural they realise that the story they've been told about their past is unravelling and the world that returned them seemingly unharmed ten years ago, might just be calling them home.
Iris learns just how weird her life can get when horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind. As Iris retraces Grey’s last known footsteps and follows the increasingly bizarre trail of breadcrumbs she left behind, it becomes apparent that the only way to save her sister is to decipher the mystery of what happened to them as children. The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years. This is a riveting, richly-imagined and captivating read with a haunting and chilly atmosphere. The unique and compelling story mixes elements of dark fantasy, detective fiction, fairy tales and sinister horror creating an evocative and wickedly twisty tale. Iris’s first-person narration is propulsive and quick-paced and Sutherland’s prose is lush and lyrical. Weaving a scintillating story she touches on the weighty topics of suicidal ideation, grief, substance abuse, loss, love, bullying and the conflict and constant struggle as a young person between being yourself and wanting to fit in amongst your peers. A highly recommended read with a chilling narrative ripe with rising dread but offset superbly by some tension-breaking wit and clever banter. With intricate worldbuilding, fascinating folklore, intriguing and powerful magic and a creepy Scottish woodland setting, House of Hollow certainly hits the spot.
The Hollow sisters are otherworldly and peculiar, and their bond to each other goes beyond skindeep. Their strange abilities make them the target of those with foul intentions. When their eldest sister goes missing, Iris and Vivi go on a strange and unsettling journey to discover what has happened to her. Pursued by a dark figure dressed as a Minotaur, they are desperate to discover what happened to their sister, whilst battling with their own demons and abilities. This story will unsettle you, and leave you with scars. It’s a dark and twisted tale about familial bonds, and secrets that should stay hidden. I loved it, and will take a while to recover from it
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for this extract.
Very creepy and atmospheric, albeit just an extract I’m looking forward to reading the rest.
This sampler of Krystal Sutherland’s newest ethereal beauty is just enough to whet the appetite. Three mysterious sisters, a fashion designer, a rockstar and a schoolgirl, with a mysterious allure and an obscure past. I’m always drawn to stories about three sisters, and Krystal Sutherland’s writing is a thing of beauty. I’m just furious that I didn’t realise this was a sampler, not the full book, as I can’t wait to read more of Sutherland’s achingly haunting writing, and find out what really happened to the Hollow sisters.
