As a weather lover, "Weather" by Robert J. Ford instantly caught my eye. Let me tell you, this book not only lived up to my expectations but left me utterly awestruck.
The descriptions in this book are nothing short of poetic, providing fascinating insights into the intricacies of weather phenomena. From the average lifespan of a raindrop to the delicate process of snowflake formation, Ford weaves a captivating narrative that deepens my appreciation for the incredible force and unpredictability of Mother Nature.
The real showstopper, though, is the incredible photography. Each image is a masterpiece, capturing the raw power and breathtaking beauty of various weather events. From lighthouses transformed into ice palaces to lightning bolts striking over water, the visual journey is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Now, let's talk minor flaws – and when I say minor, I mean minuscule. There were moments when I craved even more detail in the captions, but this is purely a personal preference. The overall balance between visuals and information is well-maintained.
In a nutshell, "Weather" is a must-have for anyone fascinated by the Earth's atmospheric drama. From rainbows to moonbows, typhoons to misty landscapes, this book covers it all. My fellow weather enthusiasts, rejoice!
Robert J. Ford, you've created a masterpiece, and I can't thank you enough for this incredible journey into the heart of weather wonders.
Weather was mesmerizing it has absolutely stunning pictures documenting extreme and dramatic weather events around the world. I honestly cannot rave enough about the photography of them weather shown in this book ranging, from rain, storms. It has spectacular lightening, easily beautiful fog and even moonbows (honestly didn’t know that was a thing but if it’s not actually called that I don’t care is fabulous).
The information and layout is exceptional and this book would be a great resource for children and adults alike. I've learned so many new things from this book and it would definitely fascinate children and open curiosity to learn more about nature. I highly suggest it!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Weather is a stunning photography book about extreme and dramatic weather around the world. This book has superb photography of weather inside, from rain, storm and fog to snow, lightening and moonbows (which was my absolutely favourite bit).

Stunning photography. Amazing photos of weather. What more could you ask for?
I loved everything about this book. The photographs are dramatic and show some intense weather events. If you love weather and nature, I highly recommend this book. It’s just chock full of simply amazing photographs that show nature at its finest.
Weather has long been a subject of fascination for me. I love poring over weather reports and watching videos of storms. So, this book was perfect for me. The subject matter is engaging, and the photos bring the reader right there to the scene to witness some of nature’s most raw power displays up close.
Some of the subjects covered are: thunderstorms, fog, frost, snow, lightning, cyclones, tornadoes and more. Each chapter begins with an introductory text that describes the weather events featured. Then, you dive right into the photos. The collection is extensive and covers weather events from around the world, some of which made news headlines.
This would make an excellent coffee table book, but read it too. And take your time looking at the pictures. Study their beauty. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Weather effects us all day to day, so this was a fun book to look at and see what it looks like in all it's glory through the medium of colour photography.
The book is divided into 5 sections after the short Introduction:
- Rain & Lightning
- Fog, Mists & Clouds
- Snow & Ice
- Heat
- Wind: Hurricanes, Typhoons & Tornadoes
Each photograph includes a description along with it's location. Sometimes they show the weather in action at other times it shows the devastation the weather causes, such as the floods in York, England in 2015 or hail in Mexico that practically covered up cars. When it comes to the Clouds section, each photographs description tell you the type it is too. It also explains how 'Snow Rollers' are created
The Heat chapter mainly looks at the devastation it has on the land, be it fires or droughts. Similarly with the Wind chapter; there are many pictures of the destruction it has caused.
There are over 150 photographs included within this book and again would make a great coffee table book.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Weather <3
...this is it. This is the review. Weather = heart emoji, and you gotta trust me on this. Go and pick it up right now if you’ve ever been interested in 1) photography and 2) climate - you can thank me later.
Ahem. I mean.
By now you should know that interesting pictures are an essential staple in my life. Fundamental. I’ve been following amateur and pro blogs for ages, admiring that flower bursting through concrete, shop signs, the curve of a balcony, aspen trees adorned with snow. Good photography might be subjective, but it always makes an impression. It leaves you with something you didn’t have before.
Have a look.
Cover: A lighthouse plus stormy sea, what a great, great choice. It’s eye catching and it lures you right in. Plus, hey, a lighthouse! (yes, it bears repeating)
Yay!
- Weather is the second book I’m reviewing for Amber Books, and I’m noticing a trend here: powerful pictures selected with care and paired with bite-sized, relevant information. It’s a format I appreciate, because it avoids infodumping on the reader - I’m a big fan of minimalism, you know. Teach me things without overwhelming me, just like Robert is doing here.
- The leading theme is self-explanatory: we have five different sections, ranging from Rain & Lightning to Heat to Fog & Clouds. Each of them develops in an organic way, featuring pictures from around the world. Atmospheric events are detailed and well-researched, offering clear insights of how they develop and where. Did you know that lenticular clouds can be dangerous if you fly too close to them? Or how ground frost is formed? That star dunes receive 5 million years old sand from every direction? :D
- All the photos are perfect. There are a couple I don’t like, yes, but they’re still impressive, crisp and packing a punch
Special mention:
- Thunderstorm, Colorado, USA. The hues of the sky are lovely.
- Church of St. Thomas, Slovenia. What a picturesque little church, standing on top of a hill, the fog giving it an ethereal vibe.
- Michigan, USA. There’s a tree emerging from the fog, the sky almost lilac.
- Ground frost, Hertford, England. Straight out of a fairytale.
- Ice sculptures, Yorkshire, England. I thought they were real sculptures, done on purpose! They’re fog frozen on a fence instead, art in its sublime form.
- Snow rollers, Montana and Ohio, USA. Wow! More nature art!
- Joshua tree, California, USA. Unique and so beautiful.
- Aral Sea, Kazakhstan. A ship stranded on the former Aral Sea, this is a place that always fascinated me.
- Tropical cyclone, Hong Kong. The benches facing the storm, stillness among chaos.
- Supercell storm, Queensland, Australia and Oklahoma, USA. Once again, I love the hues of the sky.
Nay!
- Uh, there are none. This book is impeccable.
TL;DR
5 stars on GR, I’m sad I can’t give it a cum laude and an academic kiss to boot. Amber Books, Robert Ford? I’m eagerly awaiting your next collab! Go and make me happy :D
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Amazing photos of weather and the damage that it can inflict as well as it's beauty.
This is a frequently stunning, interesting and educational coffee table sort of book that offers stunning photos of all kinds of weather phenomena with some accompanying text to explain how it happens and give more context. Some are disaster photos while others are stunning landscape shots. I expected more about how climate chaos is changing our weather and it does touch on this at times but not as much as I expected. The focus is more on the photos and less on the instruction, but it's still a book that will be informative for kids and adults alike.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
This might sound like a copy and paste review from the one I just posted about the volcano book published by the same company as this one, but that's not because I'm lazy, it's just because I am finding it very difficult to say the same thing (the book is AMAZING, the pictures are GORGEOUS and I learned SO MUCH) in a different way.
So I'm just going to repeat myself, slightly.
I am now hooked on Amber Books Ltd and what they produce. The content is always gorgeously presented, the information is always delivered in an easy to digest way, much of it the casual reader won't already be aware of and it's always an utter delight to read.
The one part in this book abut weather that didn't resonate with me, was the part about mist, fog and clouds. That's just because this reader was bored, NOT because it was any less than the rest of the book. For some reason, clouds don't do it for me. But the parts about lightning, rain, storms, MOONBOWS (SO AWESOME), snow, etc., rang all of my bells and the pictures were STUNNING, so my eyes were feasting on some major natural beauty while my brain was learning about it.
I requested this because the cover was pretty and I didn't know much about weather and wanted to learn. I got much more than I expected and I have to say, this book and their book about volcanos have set the bar pretty high for Amber Books Ltd for me. I think they'll clear it without any problems though. The work and absolute LOVE that was put into this and the volcano book is obvious. They will be a go-to recommend for me to any customer who is the slightest bit interested in learning about the weather and I think it is appropriate for middle grade and precocious younger readers.
I don't dis-recommend the eBook version, but I have a feeling the physical copy of this book would blow anyone who sees it out of their socks. Great coffee table book, but one of those coffee table books that you read, and more than once.
5, rainbow and moonbow, stars!
My thanks to NetGalley and Amber Books Ltd for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
Another book featuring gorgeous pictures, love them but i would preferred some more scientific info.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thank you to NetGalley and Amber Books for an opportunity to read Weather
Another gorgeous photo book by Amber Books! Some of the photography in this book is just mind blowing- I wish I had those skills !
I would have liked a bit more science and facts but regardless an amazing book for your coffee table or for someone who is interested in photography !
Stunning and unique photographs highlight the beauty of weather in this book which deserves a place in any coffee table collection. Weather can be dramatic at any time of the year, and Ford captures the often violent storms where they can be destructive to the area in the world where they strike. An example of the over 150 photographs from around the world include glaciers in Iceland, brush fires in Australia and fog in Yosemite Valley. Accompanying each stunning photo is a description or explanation of all types of weather. It's difficult to pick a favorite photo and I'm sure any reader will be moved by the weather depicted which is out of our control and part of our lives. This book is appropriate for the weather enthusiast and anyone interested in science and photography.
Thank you to Amber Books Ltd. and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this title for an honest review.
This will make a beautiful coffee table book and I think fascinating for any age. Anyone who is interested in weather and science would enjoy this book, even children. It included all types of weather, and along with the photos, made the book a very interesting read. I even learned a new thing or two. Many things that I learned many years ago in school that have alluded me. This weather photo book was a beautiful and informative read.
Nature’s Weather Drama
While not every picture in this book is as dramatic as the cover, a surprising many are. This coffee table weather book is broadly divided into sections: rain and lightning; fog, mist, and clouds; snow and ice; heat; and wind including hurricanes, typhoons, and tornadoes. Pictures come from all over the world, showing us both weather in nature and in cities and other human-made backdrops. Many photos are intense, showing dramatic weather; others are more subtle. Some are a little blurry or grainy, but that is most likely caused by the photographer wanting to get a quick snap of something impressive. Some photos are meant to be a generic example of a weather phenomenon, while others specifically show weather events that we all remember, like Hurricane Katrina. The author has introductory material leading off each section that helps explain the weather to follow. The pictures all have captions that further detail what is happening in the photos. This is definitely an instructional book as well as one to simply be savored for the photographs. It would be great to share with children who are fascinated by science or weather. Highly recommended.
A topic of endless conversation, the weather is a timeless classic. It is ever changing yet remains a constant in our everyday experiences. Powerful, calming, inspiring fear, wreaking havoc and setting the stage for almost every memory known to man, it is impossible to harness or capture. And yet, the fascination remains and is depicted in this beautiful tribute through awe inspiring photography. Broken into sections such as rain & lightening, fog, mist & clouds, snow & ice, heat, and various types of wind events means there is something here for everyone. Immerse yourself in this visual guide of weather and learn from the brief descriptions. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own, freely given.
A wonderful collection of excellent pictures which are realistic and mesmerizing. It carries in it collection of major weather events of our planet, that happen routinely. It captures both beauty as well as dangers of these events. Alongside picture there are nice explanatory captions.
A great primer for kids as well as adults.
Pick it up to find next place you want to visit or next weather you wish to experience.
A collection of absolutely stunning photographs of various extreme weather phenomena, perfect as a coffee table book, but scientific information is sparse.
Weather has always fascinated me since my early studies of Geography at high school. In the UK we don't experience too many extreme weather conditions so I expected images and information from many far of places. I was really surprised to see some images from the UK, not least one of my home town of Saltcoats in Ayrshire. We have experienced floods due to rising tides through the years and gales, and there was a photo on page 42! Other UK images include the haunting snow sculptures on Yorkshire Moors on p119, frozen loch on our beautiful Isle of Arran on page 118 as well as images from Aberystwyth in Wales and others from the UK.
The pictures captured of supercell storms, typhoons, floods, hurricanes and sandstorms from around the world are mesmerising. The information included is detailed and provides background and depth. Many of the images are iconic including St Joseph's Lighthouse covered in layers of ice, snow rollers and the Supercell cyclones over Queensland.
This is a book that is worth investing in, perfect coffee table book.
Thank you Netgalley for an advance copy of the eBook in return for an honest review.
This book is not entirely what I was expecting. I was ready for the majestic and dramatic weather scenes, the lightning and storm clouds caught in action, accompanied by discreet captions. What I wasn't expecting was how well the photographer/author captures human interaction with weather in a way that truly captures the attention. There will be a few pages of nature alone, storm clouds rolling in, rain falling, and then juxtaposed against this, a city buried by hail, lost in mist or smog, a boat, abandoned, in the dried out husk of the Aral sea. Every time you turn the page to see one of these photos, you can't help but feel the insignificance of a single human being against the unstoppable power of nature. And yet, as the author carefully points out, as a species we are significantly affecting these weather patterns that are captured so well. It is a stark and vivid reminder that our place in this world should be as conservationists, working with nature, and not colonisers and destroyers.
We all talk about the weather, right? But do we really pay attention to it? "Weather" by Robert J. Ford takes us on a visual journey through Earth's weather in all it's glory. The photos are incredible (check out the sand storm!), and there is just enough information to educate, leaving the reader able to follow up on anything that strikes them. Beautiful book.
My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.
