This book has been on me TBR shelf for quite a while. I finally read it and am happy I did.
I had to get accustomed to how the story was told because we have two POVs and two timelines.
We follow Claudia Dunn as she’s looking for a missing woman and Dominic Harrison as he’s trying to find a serial killer.
An intriguing story with a few “mystery” spots that are blatant as to who did It but you’ll still question yourself.
I can’t wait to get to the next one!
BLOOD STAINED by Rebecca Bradley.
Can’t find her.
Can’t catch him.
Can’t trust anyone.
The first in a gripping new Sheffield-set crime series starring Detective Claudia Nunn.Detective Claudia Nunn’s colleague DS Dominic Harrison has been leading the case against a dangerous serial killer, who hunts his victims using a dating app. But now his own wife has gone missing.
A brilliant read. Great story and characters. I live this author. Can guarantee you won't be able to put it down. 5*.
Fabulous story that I could not put down. Would highly recommend to fans of this genre. Great writing, and I will look for more from this author.
The first book in the DI Claudia Nunn series. A really good read that had a couple of twists that I didn’t see coming ! The ending was left on a cliffhanger which has you wanting to read book 2 to find out what happens !!
I absolutely loved this book. The writing is superb and characterizations brilliant. I am sooo looking forward to the next book as the ending left me desperate to know what happens next.
Thank you Joffre and Netgalley.
This is the first book in a new series featuring Detective Claudia Nunn and is set in Sheffield. The book opens with a woman being attacked in her own home, who we later find out is Ruth, the wife of DS Dominic Harrison and he reports her missing. He has been investigating a number of murders of young women for over six months and is no closer to finding the killer who has been dubbed The Sheffield Strangler. As Ruth, an undercover police officer, has gone undercover to try to catch him it appears that the Sheffield Stranger is maybe involved in her disappearance. Claudia is given the task of interviewing Dominic and the reason why she is so reluctant to do so becomes apparent later in the book. When she discovers a large bloodstain in his garage, Dominic does become the prime suspect but he is adamant he is being framed by the Strangler. The story switches from the present day to six months earlier with Dominic describing his investigations into The Sheffield Strangler, Will Claudia be able to discover what has happened to Ruth and will they find The Sheffield Stranger? I really enjoyed the book, it has lots of twists and turns and is full of tension. Some of the events were a little unbelievable but I thought the plot was very exciting and I look forward to the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with this ARC of Blood Stained by Rebecca Bradley to review.
Review to follow.
4 Stars from me
I was very keen to read Blood Stained which features a new lead character as I have enjoyed the Hannah Robbins series from the same author.
DI Claudia Nunn did not disappoint, she was a strong female lead and good, determined, feisty character to get to know.
The Sheffield Strangler has been chased by DS Dominic Harrison for a while until suddenly, Harrison's own wife goes missing - leaving only a pool of blood and one of the Strangler's calling cards behind.
There was a tiny thing that jarred for me a little but I know that Rebecca is ex-police so it is either artistic licence or it would have been allowed - don't want to say more as don't want to give any spoilers - if you've read the book you'll probably know exactly what I mean!
The story is fast paced and exciting and I loved all of the procedural side of things. Rebecca Bradley's knowledge shines through and gives this book a real air of authenticity.
I liked the differing times and the way that information was revealed in subtle little layers, overall this is a brilliant serial killer book that I am sure all crime thriller fans will love. I look forward to the next instalment with DI Claudia Nunn.
Police procedural although not very believable. Big twist at end but the charms story didn't do it for me.
Blood Stained is the first in the Detective Inspector Claudia Nunn series. The story begins with Ruth Harrison at her kitchen sink when she realizes someone is standing behind her. She exhales and then hears him exhale. She decides she can fight and tries to use a glass as a weapon. Ruth tries to escape he grabs her by the hair. She fights him until a blow lands on the side of her head. He tells her to stop fighting and she replies never. DCI Maddison Sharpe has assigned DI Nunn the task of interviewing DS Dominic Harrison, husband to missing Ruth. She reluctantly agrees. Ruth, a police officer herself in the undercover unit, had gone undercover to try to catch the vicious perpetrator called the "Sheffield Strangler. As it so happens this is the case her husband has been working on for the last six months.
This was a book written from two points of view, Dominic in the past, Claudia in the present. There were some odd directions to follow. They are all in the same police department. What we don't know until mid book is Dominic is father to Claudia and husband to Ruth. A conflict of interest if ever I saw one or more in this case. While I did like this book and I hope to read the next one, there were clues along the way that I did not see resolved during the story, but I was very surprised by the ending. I am curious to see where the next book picks up and whether my questions will be answered or not. So that is the reason for my rating.
It's official 2021 is the year of awesome crime thriller!!
This is the first and I hope not the last in the Claudia Nunn series. What an opening! Undercover officer Ruth Harrison is missing presumed dead. Her husband DC Domonic Harrison reports her as missing and is convinced it is linked to his on going investigation of the serial killer dubbed the strangler. Claudia is tasked with interviewing Dom to gage as much as she can from him. With a personal relationship they think its their best chance to find Ruth and see if Dom has anything to do with her disappearance.
Oh my god I just loved this book. The layout was so fresh with Claudia we are in the present following her investigation and with Dominic we start 6 months prior to uncover his investigation and how that has lead him to believe Ruth's disappearance is linked. I loved the fact that even though we are jumping back we are still recievung the information from Dominic as he is telling Claudia what happened and laying out his investigation. It meant we as readers got to decide if we felt there was a link.
I like Claudia she's a rule follower take charge badass it has to be said. There are soooo many reasons why she shouldn't take the case but the choice is taken away from her. Yet when we find out why she was so resistant when the DCI assigned her I have to say I had to re read it several times. Even though this series is around her this case doesn't allow for much of her personality to shine through which is very clever of the author because she has left her wide open to further develop.
Dominic I am not keen on for so many reasons. Main is he seems to think he's better than he is, just really grated on me.
The case the stranger is quite gruesome. But again the way the book is layed out we aren't bogged down with the details of each crime. Yet I guessed who the killer was and didn't waiver and I was correct. But yet I didn't even care I was just on the edge of my seat to read it all play out.
This is one of those books the more I write in a review the more I will give away. So all in all I loved it and roll on any sequels. Great book for all u crime fans our there. 5 stars
Thanks to netgalley the publisher and author for a digital ARC in exchange for my fair and honest opinion
Fans of Helen H Durrant and Angela Marsons will not want to miss Rebecca Bradley’s tense, twisted and terrifying Sheffield-set thriller, Blood Stained featuring Detective Claudia Nunn.
A dangerous serial killer is on the loose who finds his latest victims using a dating app. As the body count begins to pile up, the pressure is on the police to track down this ruthless murderer before more lives are lost. DS Dominic Harrison is leading this case and is putting all of his efforts and energies into finding this depraved killer and putting him behind bars where he belongs. However, this case gets very personal for DS Harrison when his own wife goes missing and the shocks and surprises do not stop there because a large pool of blood is found in their garage and Dominic goes from prime investigator to prime suspect.
Dominic’s colleague Claudia is convinced of Dominic’s innocence. Determined to clear his name and to track down this serial killer, Claudia steps in and begins her own investigation, but is she ready for the shocking truths she is about to uncover? How well did she know Dominic? Is he as innocent as he claims? Or could Dominic have been the killer hiding in plain sight underneath all of their noses all along? Claudia will not rest until she has put together the twisted pieces of this puzzle – even if some of her discoveries will end up rocking the solid foundations of her entire world.
Can Claudia get to the bottom of this mystery? Or is it already far too late? And what about Dominic? Could he truly be a murderer? Or is there somebody pulling the strings and determined to make him pay the ultimate prize in a sinister game of vengeance?
Rebecca Bradley’s Blood Stained is a heart-pounding thriller where the pace does not let up, the twists and turns come thick and fast and the tension is ramped up to the hilt. Gritty, dark and captivating, Blood Stained is a serial killer chiller featuring a fabulous detective I certainly hope we will see more of in the not too distant future.
Brilliantly plotted, confidently written and so scary it will give you nightmares, Blood Stained is a top-notch crime novel and fans of the genre will do well to remember Rebecca Bradley’s name because has a very bright future ahead of her!
The Sheffield Strangler has struck again, but this time his victim appears to be Ruth Harrison, a police officer and the wife of Detective Sergeant Dominic Harrison. While the pool of blood left staining the garage floor appears to implicate the husband as a suspect, Detective Inspector Claudia Nunn must begin interviewing DS Harrison to gather evidence and facts in order to hopefully find Ruth alive and/or catch the serial killer that has been terrorizing the community. But what if the killer is hiding in plain sight…
DANG! That was one heck of an ending I did not see coming! No way am I going to spoil the secrets behind the blood stains in a review, but will say Rebecca Bradley’s first installment in the DI Claudia Nunn series is a fast-paced police procedural I’d recommend to fans of this genre! Eagerly awaiting the next in the series!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
Police officer Ruth Harrison is viciously attacked and then vanishes from her home. Her husband Dominic is a high profile police officer, leading the investigation into the Sheffield Strangler. But now he is the prime suspect and he needs to convince his colleagues of his innocence so that they can find his wife and catch the Strangler.
Wow! Blood Stained is the first in a new police and crime thriller series and what a way to begin! We witness the brutal attack on Ruth in the opening chapter and then are straight into the investigation into her disappearance.
The plot is delivered through the third person perspectives of Dominic and Claudia. His chapters showcase his frantic search over the last six months to find the Sheffield Strangler before he strikes again. Meanwhile the chapters that focus on Claudia show her interviewing Dominic in connection wth his wife's attack and to get the inside story on his case.
There are some major plot twists scattered through the book and plenty of bodies to ramp up the tension. Including Ruth's attack at the start sets the tone but also invests us in the search for the truth and justice. We develop a feeling of dread that the Strangler has still got her alive or dead but hope that together Dominic and Claudia can unpick the clues to find her safe.
The pace of the writing is quite fast and the events seem relentless. Dominic and Claudia have an authenticity and their revulsion at the murders is both realistic and human. There are some unpleasant forensic details but they are not gratuitous.
Blood Stained was completely gripping and I can't wait to see what happens next for Claudia in her career and personal life.
Unlike the other novels by this author this one is set in Sheffield and is the first in a new series featuring Detective Inspector Claudia Nun who is tasked with interviewing a colleague whose wife who is also a serving officer has been killed, is this the work of the officer himself or the Sheffield Strangler ?
The first of the series and what looks to be a very good one to read
My thanks to the Author publishers and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
As someone born and bred and who lived in Sheffield for twenty-five years before moving to Durham I was interested to read this Police procedural set in the city, however apart from about four mentions of specific areas this book could be set in any city. Well written this is a clever compelling story a real page turner. Taught and tense at times with engaging characters, there is one major surprise which had me staring at the screen open mouthed before reading the page again to make sure I had read it right. A later twist I am pleased to say came as no shock, but overall a terrific start to what hopefully will be a series featuring D I Claudia Nunn.
So why only four stars, well it's the disappointing for me at any rate ending, my counter said 94% read, as I turned the page our heroine having just been put in charge of a special task force, when seven more inconsequential lines before THE END. No completely closing of the case, I presume because this is the start of a series and the next book will see justice done, or will it be book three?
Recommended.
This is a really exciting read. I loved the way the author told the story from the point of view of the victim, the suspect and the police officer. Lots of books end with a jaw dropping twist but this author served up the first shock well before the halfway mark. But the surprises don't end there, with the book delivering a cliffhanger ending. I can only hope she intends writing more books in this series.
I’m no expert in police procedure in fact I only know what I’ve picked up from tv, films & books but I think even I could probably have advised the author to have a re-think. No way could an investigation be handled like this and the silliness of what proved to be a huge part of the plot completely spoiled the book for me. Strip away the nonsense and there is the kernel of a good book in there but it needs a lot of changes.
Blood Stained by Rebecca Bradley is a terrifying and tense thriller set in Sheffield featuring Detective Claudia Nunn.
A serial killer is choosing his victims by using a dating app. As the bodies pile up the police are put under extreme pressure to find the killer before more people are dead. DS Dominic Harrison is the lead in the case and he sleeps, eats and works this case, hoping to find the one thing that will break it and lead to a conviction. Things take a personal turn when his wife goes missing and to make matters worse a large pool of blood is discovered in their garage. DS Harrison is now a suspect in his own case.
His work colleague Claudia is sure Dominic is innocent. She is that sure that she steps in and starts her own investigation, is she ready for what she discovers? Claudia is determined to get to the bottom of this...even if it changes everything she believed.
A gritty, heart-pounding thriller that gives us twist after twist, never letting up. The tension is wound up to the absolute maximum. The plotting has been brilliantly created with enough drama to more than keep you engrossed in this scary serial killer thriller. Hope to see Claudia again soon too.
Thanks to Joffe Books, NetGalley and Jill Burkinshaw for the copy of the book.
I’m new to Rebecca Bradley’s writing but when this novel arrived in my inbox I had high expectations from the blurb – and it didn’t let me down. This is a second novel set in Sheffield that I’ve read over the past week and as a South Yorkshire girl (originally), I am delighted to see more northern areas being represented more in crime thrillers.
Blood Stained is a cracking start to a new detective series and I simply cannot wait for more. I loved the characters, the intense plot and the flowing narrative. The time just disappeared whilst I was reading.
This is the first outing for Detective Claudia Nunn and it’s not an easy one. We begin right in the thick of things with a mysterious prologue of the victim then straight into the police work. Claudia is put in the impossible position of interviewing her colleague and senior, DS Dominic Harrison whose wife ruth is missing. Dominic is insistent he is innocent and that Ruth’s disappearance is related to his latest case but is he telling the truth or trying to cover up something more sinister?
I loved how this book cut straight to the chase. We come straight in as Claudia is tasked with interviewing Dominic and things intensify when some damning evidence is found during a home search. Woven between the investigation into Ruth’s disappearance is Dominic’s telling of the investigation into the Sheffield Strangler in the hope it will help them track down Ruth.
Both investigations are intense and I found myself quickly reading each bit so I could get back to the other investigation. I just couldn’t put this one down.
Claudia is an interesting character although I’m feeling as though we still have a lot to learn about her in future novels. She works well as a team, takes on a challenge with great integrity and professionalism. I like her a lot and cannot wait to meet her again.
It’s a great start to a new series and I’m looking forward to further novels in the series.
