A twisty and pacey thriller, I struggled to put it down and would highly recommend to other thriller lovers!
I thoroughly enjoyed Hostage by Claire Mackintosh and read it over the course of a day. I really liked the plot and it kept me on the edge of my seat to the very last page. I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future!
This is addictive and gripping read. It is full of tension. It is well written with believable characters. The novel has really good twists.
A great book
Loved it from start to finish. Lots of interesting characters and kept me interested all way through. Loved the ending twist.
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
well that was a white knuckle read - Mina is caught in an impossible situation, and faces an awful decision.
There's more to her relationship with her husband than meets the eye and the multiple points of view provide food for thought - and questions as to whether the narrators themselves are unreliable.
Definitely not one to read on your long-haul flight, it does feel very gritty and realistic.
A really strong read that stays with you (unfortunately terrorism is a real threat to aviation which makes this book linger - and not in a good way!! )
⭐️ 3.5 ⭐️
Rounded up to 4 stars.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Hostage is brilliantly written, and I was pulled onboard from the off. The pacing is good, although I thought it did get a bit slow about halfway through.
There are a lot of characters to get your head around, and it took a while to get a grip on who they all were.
It's a suspenseful story with plenty of twists and turns and a claustrophobic atmosphere. I really enjoyed it.
This is only the second book I’ve read by Clare Mackintosh and wow, what a punch it packed. The plot kept me interested the whole way through and threw a few twists and surprises at me which I thoroughly enjoyed!
Can’t wait to pick up more books by this author, one of my favourite ‘thriller’ authors!
I rated it 4.5⭐️ overall.
Hostage Clare Mackintosh
I was absolutely gripped by this storyline, great tension and had my heart racing at times.
I was hooked quickly and kept turning the pages, the tension was there for the whole book.
Absolutely brilliant, I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Some reslly good twists, especially at the end. Can't wait for more from the author as I always know it will be a fantastic read.
An amazing thriller that had me gripped from the first page. A compelling read I couldn't put down. Love Mackintosh's writing and can't wait for the next one! A total sleep stealer I'll be recommending to everyone.
For anyone nervous about flying, this is one book which will terrify you!
This story is good - a tight plot, lots of action and a chilling ending. The tension is intense and I really liked the main character, Mina. The chapters covering the other passenger perspectives was the extra wow factor in the plot which made it more intriguing.
Overall, an unique and interesting thriller!
Thank You NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for this ARC!
This book was everything I look for in a book. It was so exciting. The plot was fantastic. It really had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart racing. It was very well written and flowed well. I must look out for more work from this author
I couldn't put this book down - it was full of suspense, drama, thrills, and keeps the reader hooked throughout! Another great book by Clare Mackintosh.
I was quite intrigued by Mina’s chapters at the start but once the events of the book really began I lost interest as it seemed a bit ridiculous. Adams sections were just daft in my opinion and too unbelievable. Definitely not her best book.
It's the ultimate dilemma, do you follow a demand that threatens the lives of many to save the life of the person you love the most? That's the ethical choice that Mina, a cabin crew attendant, has to make mid flight when she receives a threatening note telling her that her daughter Sophia will die unless she helps an as yet unknown hostile into the cockpit of the plane with the threat that this action entails. Unable to contact home to check she cannot take the chance that this is a hoax but at the same time, can she really do what they are asking?
When we first meet Mina it's clear that her life as she knew it was already at breaking point as her husband Adam had recently moved out. As a means of escape and a way to think things through she offers to swap with a colleague for a place on a groundbreaking non-stop 20 hour flight from London to Sydney. But it's a choice that she will soon come to regret as lives are put at risk both in the air and at home.
The inaugural flight is filled with paying customers, journalists and celebrities but amongst them are a handful who have an ulterior motive. No sooner does the flight take off then a series of incidents occur which sets in motion the situation that Mina finds herself in.
The narrative alternates between Mina, Adam and a few passengers who are identified only through their seat numbers. Each of the passengers are telling their own stories and as the story progresses we get a picture as to what is actually going on and the motive behind the takeover of the flight.
My mind was constantly working overtime trying to figure out which of the characters were red herrings that I could eliminate from my list of potential suspects and which were the bad guys. And I will admit that there were a couple that I kept changing my mind about and it's only in the final moments that I was proved right in my suspicions about one of the 'good guys' and loved how it all played out in the epilogue.
Hostage was a tense and addictive read that will have you on the edge of your seat. I'm definitely glad that I'm not planning an air trip anytime soon!
Before I start, a word of warning - don’t read this book as your inflight entertainment!!! This book was fast paced, thrilling and exciting, and as I read, I could just imagine how this would play out on the big screen! We are on an inaugural non-stop flight from London to Sydney when Mina, a flight attendant on the plane receives a message that her daughter is in danger unless she follows instructions. The book follows Mina’s story, on board the plane, and her husband and daughter’s story back at home.
I enjoy a good disaster storyline, and this one was perfect! The book begins fairly normal, but you know something big is going to happen, and the anticipation of waiting for that builds nicely throughout the first few chapters. I enjoyed Mina’s storyline more than her husband’s and daughter’s although theirs was still packed with suspense! I’ve never been on a plane as big as one like this and enjoyed the descriptions of the luxury of First Class, something I could only imagine (or read about in books!). The story is filled with so many different types of characters – the good guys, the bad guys and the ones who you just couldn’t work out whether they were good or bad! My opinions of some of the characters swapped and changed as the story moved on, with the author cleverly keeping me on my toes as to who could be trusted!
This book was fast paced, full of thrills and chills, keeping the adrenaline flowing until the very end! The reasoning behind the hostage situation was interesting and cleverly played out. The ending however was completely unexpected and in one way left me feeling chilled to the bone and in another way left me satisfied with what was a great twist! This was a great rollercoaster of a read which I would recommend!
What another great buddy read!!
I’ve seen this book all over on Instagram and I have absolutely no idea why I have neglected to read it for so long!
Firstly, I have to confess. This book did absolutely nothing for my fear of flying and I’m so glad that I am not due to get on a plane anytime soon!
That said, the book was amazingly written. I was so intrigued and eager to find out what was going to happen to the passengers on the plane!
Throughout the book, I kept thinking what would I do? The book poses a lot of moral issues
The book is a real page turner
The twist at the end! Wow! The last chapter just made the whole book for me.
Another great book from a great author
I love Clare Mackintosh books on the whole, but this one did not really hit the mark for me. I found that the characters made me feel annoyed and so I felt no bond with them. I'm not much of a traveller but I'm fairly sure there are lots of procedures that the crew would use in situations like this, along with the ground staff. It all just felt like drama for the sake of it. I did enjoy the last few paragraphs though, that was an interesting take. Unlike other thrillers I found that I just didn't want to keep picking this book up, not because I was scared but because it was just dragging. This is quite a critical review but I'm aware that there are a lot of people who really enjoyed this book. My review is simply my take on this book, this is not to say it's not bad on the whole just not for me.
