This first book in the series introduces us to the small town of Hartmouth in Cornwall and the little market of Ferry Lane. Our FMC Kara works in a florist and is severely undervalued by her employer who treats her abysmally. She is also treated very shabbily by her unemployed sponging boyfriend Jago who is also cheating on her.
Kara finds solace with her family, her loving but lonely father Joe and her wonderful Grandad Harry who love her and take care of her as much as she takes care of them. After seeing the light about Jago, she decides to supplement her income to pay for her mortgage by renting her spare room on Airbnb. We meet a few interesting characters who let her room for a week at a time each; The charming NYC guy Jack, the outrageously flirtatious Aussie Bruce and the sweet and thoughtful Spaniard Angel.
I loved the character of Billy, he was sweet and kind and patient with Kara whilst she got over Jago and found herself, yet also showed he was a normal guy by showing his jealousy and frustration at times.
The trip abroad was fantastic, a great little mystery sending Kara off on her travels, something she wanted to do for so long but never got round to, between one thing and another. It was obvious that it was connected to her Airbnb guests as the places and people were all connected or appeared but as to who paid for the trip, I didn’t see coming until almost the reveal.
I can’t wait for another trip to Ferry Lane Market to catch up with Kara’s best friend Star, and to hopefully see snatches of how Kara and Billy are getting along. As long as Kara’s cat James Bond appears, we’ll know things are going well.
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
Lovely feel good book to read. It was a joy to read. Lovely characters. Great plot. The book was charming. Very well written. I’d definitely recommend this book
This was a lovely and delightful witty read, that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was filled with great characters and a lovely start to a new series.
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this arc. I absolutely devoured this book. With its short chapters it was very much a just one more chapter kinda read when one lead to about 5!!
I haven’t read a @author_nicola book before but it definitely won’t be the last.
It was heartwarming, joyful, and full of adventure now where did I put book 2!!
Lots of banter of Kara Moon and her friend Star, made me chuckle. A lovely feel-good book with lots of interesting characters. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end. Thankfully, this mystery is indeed solved in the next book in this series :)
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
I really tried to get into this book however, the storyline jumps without much notification to the reader. I would be reading a sentence about a main character and the next sentence would be about a different character. The story was incredibly hard to follow.
Welcome To Ferry Lane Market by Nicola May
Delightful and witty with a heroine that you will be rooting for: joyful receptionist,, Milly Johnson. I enjoyed this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the ARC of this book. I was intrigued by the synopsis but had a really hard time getting into the story. The writing was very descriptive and it was well written. I found the characters dry and the story to drag along.
Well, this has been sitting in my netgalley queue for far too long. I’ve never read a book by Nicola May before and for some reason I kept putting it off. I wish I hadn’t - I loved it! It tells the story of Kara Moon, who lives a very small life in her home town. After a series of life events her world starts to open up and we follow the story from there. I really liked Kara and her friends and family - particularly Grandad Harry. This is a heartwarming read that offers a lovely bit of escapism. I’ve already preordered book 2 in the series!
Sometimes I just want to read a book that will provide a nice escape. It’s fine if the characters face some challenges but there are days where knowing all will end well feels really welcome. This story about Ferry Lane Market just fits the bill.
Main character, Kara, is one of those people who puts the needs of others first. What will happen when she has a chance to change that pattern? Read this story to find out. You will probably then want to move right on to the second entry in the series.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
A Cheerful and heartwarming read full of great characters. I loved the set up and Kara not knowing who her benefactor is, Welcome To Ferry Lane Market is a great start to the series and can’t wait for the next. Fantastic feel good read
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
I do love a Nicola May book, and am so glad I discovered her...and so will you. The first, I believe, in a new series and I'm very excited. We've got new characters, wonderful locations, together with trademark Nicola May humour and insight. Read!
My thanks to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the reading copy.
A really lovely easy reading book. Kara Moon is thirty there years old and when her eight year relationship finishes her life takes a different path. Full of warmth and charm with lovely characters ,and her relationship with her dad and granddad Harry is beautiful. Well written with plenty of lovely places that draw you in and makes you feel part of the story
This book wasn't for me. I struggled to get into it
Thanks to NetGalley and Hodder&Stoughton for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Some words I would use to describe this beautiful book -
Warm
Joyous
Life-affirming
Authentic
Funny.
It is all these things and more. The writing is so gorgeous, filled with family and love and friendship. It's like the coziest blanket wrapped around you on a snowy day. And I cannot wait to read the next instalment in this Ferry Lane Market series.
Oh yeah. The plot... I advise you read it and find out.
I just couldn’t get into this book as the first half was so boring. I struggled on and it did improve about halfway through. I didn’t find the characters particularly interesting except Grandad, and some seemed superfluous to the story. It was a bit far fetched and Kara’s travels seemed rushed and just became a blur, almost like a box ticking exercise to describe each place. It’s an OK read if you persevere through the first half.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book.
Welcome To Ferry Lane Market by Nicola May was a great start to a new series of books I’m so looking forward to reading the second book in the series. This book was a feel good read which transported me to Ferry Lane and left me feeling I was there amongst the characters. A fab read.
A lovely fun heartwarming book. Kara is a great main character and I love her story of her trip to New York not knowing who her benefactor is, and this book is a great setting for the new series so looking forward to the next ones.
A real feel good read
Another great book by Nicola
Think this is going to be a great series looking forward to book number two
Thanks NetGalley
