As Taylor Swift says, “𝒯𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝓃𝑜 𝓇𝓊𝓁𝑒𝓈 𝓌𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒾𝓉 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒𝓈 𝓉𝑜 𝓁𝑜𝓋𝑒.”
There are also no rules when it comes to living Bonnie’s life. Our MC is loud, intrusive, crass, a touch chaotic and doesn’t have a natural affinity for healthy boundaries when it comes to relationships (romantic + platonic). After being fired from yet another job, she and her heart-broken bestie take a risk and leave LA for Scotland (and honestly, who could blame them?) to run a coffee shop for 6 months.
Rowan is our sturdy, divine Scotsman. Tall, talented, and grumpy beyond belief, he instantly starts on the wrong foot with our heroine, setting us up for a witty, sarcasm drenched enemies to lovers book. He has a secret talent that endears me to him that I found quite delightful.
There were times when the characters felt like caricatures to me. I couldn’t stand Bonnie for the first 40% of the book because she felt so beyond any real person I’ve ever met. As she found herself and grew comfortable in her relationship with Rowan, she became more realistic and palatable.
I really felt the conflict at the end. There’s a moment that Bonnie has when she’s alone and left disappointed that really gutted me. I empathized with her and finally felt the connection I craved.
I ended up enjoying the book more than I thought I would after the first 40%. There was LGBTQ representation, but as far as I could tell, the entire cast was white, so I would have liked some diversity there. BUT maybe I misread or misinterpreted a character description or something.
Ultimately it’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 stars from me. I would recommend this book to romance novel lovers who enjoy a good scenic location and Scottish men.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I will ready anything Meghan Quinn writes! She is one of my top favorite rom-com authors. This book made me laugh, and shed a few tears. Scotland is now also on my list of places to visit! Just a warning...this book will make you crave cake!
I loved this book. Who wouldn't want to start over in Scotland especially the way it is described in the book. The characters take you on an emotional journey as they find themselves and love. Of you are looking for a fun romantic book this is for you.
Meghan Quinn writes some funny rom-com's.
If you want a fun romance for this half of the year, this is the book for you.
The story follows Bonnie, an American woman who travels to Scotland for a job with her best friend there, she will meet Rowan, and the rest will be history.
I thought the characters were well written and constructed, their emotions were very believable and made you root for them and their romance.
Bonnie had some flaws and was a little bit annoying at times, but that only shows how Quinn can write a compelling character when given the chance.
If you've already known some of her other works, you know what you're going to get here, funny moments, steaminess, it may be a little predictable at times, but that doesn't take anything from the enjoyment of the book.
his book has it all. Meghan quinn is amazing at banter. The sarcasm, the quick whit, I was hooked, laughing at how ridiculous bonnie was, swooning over rowan, and even getting teary eyed at how some parts played out. It was so much more than a romance. It's friendship, romance, family, community all of it. I got so sucked into the stories, I'm sad it's over.
The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn a charming tale for anyone who has ever felt a little lost in life, this will help you find your way back, or just realise that we all get lost at times. Bonnie was a great character, and I say that as I loved her for most of the story, but for certain parts I did want to shake her, Dakota, her story was one I know all too well, and maybe that was why there was tension with Bonnie at times from me, but overall, it was so well done. I was there in the highlands wanting my picture with the Boaby stone, and meeting Fergus. This was a lovely story, with the right amount of steam that it kept it hot without burning the overall story. This was so well written I could smell the highland cows, they made me feel like home, as my Nanna has some near her property, and as I haven’t been able to visit for so long, it was a really powerful emotional tug. I have read this author previously, but this one pushed her to my must read list.
This was my first Meghan Quinn but definitely not my last. Bonnie and her best friend accept a six month position running a very basic coffee shop in rural Scotland. It is there that they both find home and love. What a gorgeous book. It makes me want to fly tp Scotland for a buttery and a cup of coffee. Loved it.
The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn had everything a reader needs when they are looking for a sweet and romantic story with a grumpy/sunshine trope between the two main characters. Adorable.
Road trip book no. 2💕 This is what I call a rom-com!
This is laugh out loud book is one of the sweetest grumpy/sunshine romances I’ve read. It has everything you’re looking for to fall in love, feel like home with a great group of friends and a cozy small town with all the family vibes.
I loved Bonnie so much! She was sassy, quirky, sarcastic and the most amazing and kind friend. She made me laugh so much from start to finish, but also made me tear up a couple of times. I love how she grew throughout the book and her beautiful journey to self-discovery was relatable in many ways.
Rowan was the perfect book boyfriend in a kilt! I felt so drawn to him from the start, his grumpiness and tough exterior was covering up a tender, passionate and broken guy who wanted to be loved and accepted. I loved how he let Bonnie melt the ice around his heart and win him over. The guy was the swooniest grump in the world. He also grew a lot and found the liberation his spirit needed to finally be truly happy.
Something I appreciated a lot was Bonnie’s friendship with Dakota, the way they supoorted and reassured each other and was definitely friendship goals. They fit perfectly with everyone in town and learned together how to be better friends and partners.
Rowan and Bonnie were just so perfect together, once they broke each other’s walls, they were the sweetest —and hottest— couple ever. Can’t even explain how steamy and beautiful their steam was!
This book was a beautiful story of true love and friendship, finding our people, what really gives us purpose and happiness. It made me laugh, cry and happily sigh, the perfect company for my 12 hour drive.
Many thanks to Meghan Quinn and Netgalley for gifting me a free copy if this book.
Holy Scottish sexiness! We have all, at one point in our lives, felt like we had little value, like we lack purpose in life. The main character, Bonnie, was so relatable because of that. Quinn's humor and wit is unmatchable. Excellent story!
Meghan Quinn is an auto buy author for me. She writes wonderful college sports romances, small town romances, and quirky rom coms. Given how the cover looks, I immediately thought that this book would take after The Wedding Game - more silly and light hearted with laugh out loud moments. And the first section of the book delivered this. It felt a little immature at times, but I still enjoyed it. However, about 1/3 of the way in it felt that the book shifted, and became such an emotional and incredible story. I loved this by the end. I read it in one sitting and I highly highly recommend. So if you find the beginning hard to read, push through. The middle and end is worth it!
Day made: 1 abso-freaking-lutely
Books to read: THIS ONE ASAP
You guys!! I am crying laughing!! 🤣🤣Meghan has done it again:) Another place added to my Bucket list because of Meghan’s awesomeness💓
Bonnie & Dakota are like Tina Fey & Amy Poehler😂😂 Seriously y’all…the driving scene, the well & Fergus have my sides hurting!!
The saying goes opposites attract. Rowan & Bonnie are definitely opposites. But they have so many of the same qualities. They both love their friends dearly & are fiercely loyal. They both have strained relationships with their parents. Once they realize that they actually like each other they are so cute together. I love how they (begrudgingly) let each other in and are able to help each other through the parts of life that suck☹️🥰
Cute Quotes:
‘I think I might have met my match—and she’s wrapped up in a tiny, feisty, all-American package.’ 😍 Rowan is smitten with Bonnie’s saucy-self:)
‘Oh no . . . this isn’t good at all. It’s happening. I think I’m crushing on Kilty McGrumpyshire.’…lol they are so perfect for each other.
“She’s the only thing that’s ever washed away the pain and brought me joy.” “Then what the fuck are you doing here, talking to me, you bawbag? Go get her.”—Gah! The time Rowan spends with his dad is heartbreakingly perfect. Leave it to his dad to be so blunt about getting the girl;)
Phenomenal book once again by Meghan Quinn. While this was definitely the funniest of romcoms that I have read in quite some time, there was so much heart and self-discovery that I laughed and cried at the same time with Bonnie.
Seeing Bonnie flourish and discover herself, while also finding love, made me feel so happy. I loved the message about how you might not always have a dream job or anything like that—only things that make you happy and make live worth living.
Meghan—great read and I look forward to the next :)
Well. That story took an emotional turn. The laughter, the bantering, the one liners. I laughed so hard through this story. And the emotions were flipped 180° and I’m sitting here sobbing. Sobbing in the happy and content way.
Bonnie and her best friend, Dakota are in a rut. When Dakota stumbles upon an advertisement looking for someone to run a coffee shop in a small town in the Highlands, she thinks they should apply. Bonnie thinks that she’s crazy but goes with it. It’s not so crazy when they end up in the town to run the shop.
I love, love Scotland. It’s truly on my bucket list to move there. When Meghan Quinn announced she has written a book set in Scotland, I was lucky enough to get an ARC. And this story is pure Highland magic. I found myself relating so much to Bonnie with a dash of Dakota thrown in there. And Rowan? What a strapping, grumpy, teddy bear of a Scottish prime man he is. I loved, loved these two together. One of my favourite book couples of all time.
I can’t wait to buy this book in every form when it comes out in August.
The Highland Fling is the perfect rom-com. Broody hero. Excellent banter. Slow burn. Interesting side characters. I truly loved this book.
The Highland Fling follows Bonnie and her best friend, Dakota as they travel to Scotland to find themselves while working at coffee shop in a small town. Bonnie meets Rowan, a local who helps Bonnie and Dakota at his parents’ coffee shop. The relationship development between Bonnie and Rowan is slow and organic. Their banter is hilarious and relatable. This opposites attract, romantic comedy has side characters that leaves you wanting more and a setting that has you adding Scotland to your bucket list.
The Highland Fling checked all the boxes for a perfect rom-com. It has wit and banter but also has relatable drama. The character development is perfect and refreshing. I read The Highland Fling in one sitting as I didn’t want to put it down and leave Scotland and the coffee shop.
Thanks to Montlake, NetGalley, and Meghan Quinn for the advanced copy to review. All opinions are my own.
I love Meghan Quinn books! I knew when I saw this on NetGalley I had to have it. From the beginning I knew I would love this story. I also wish I could be Bonnie St. James!
What happens when Bonnie is fired from her job and her best friend Dakota finds an advertisement for help wanted at a coffee shop in Scotland? They take the job and leave the LA life behind. What could possibly happen? Besides moving to a small town in the highlands, not understanding the Scottish terminology and meeting a hunky Scottsman.
I absolutely loved this book! Something about Meghan Quinn stories just makes me laugh and feel happy. When I read her stories, they are relatable, there are moments where as a reader you can totally relate to the characters.
If you are looking for a romance with a hunky Scotsman and a town that knows everything, this is the story for you!
Thank you NetGalley and Montclair for this Arc. Also thank you Megan Quinn for writing another great story!
aye, scotland has cemented itself on my bucket list! i was worried after glimpsing some of the reviews i’d seen posted, but this was perfectly fine, and truly charming. while bonnie could be over-the-top at points, i really enjoyed myself.

The number of cakes consumed while reading this book: 1, because you can’t make me read about cake, Dundee cake, cookies and pastries without me giving in. I’m only human
Well I guess I’m moving to Scotland to run a coffee shop all because of this book. The writing is some of the best I have read by this author. She was able to capture this quaint Scotland town and transport me into the pages of this book. Her scene descriptions I could vividly see when I closed my eyes and the food made my stomach grumble just at the mere mention of these delectable treats, but maybe not the haggis.
Bonnie is the antithesis of Rowan. She is vivacious, ornery, and lives to push every single one of Rowan's buttons. Their banter lit up the pages of my kindle. Their spark and chemistry only illuminated more they picked on one another and I ate it up.
Bonnie and Dakota have this connection that is more powerful than any love story. They have a once in a lifetime friendship where that person sees you for who you truly are, no mask, no front. I have never in my life laughed out loud with tears streaming down my face while reading a book. The humor is relatable and comical. These two women need their own show. Adventures with Bonnie and Dakota where they go and explore new places. I would pay whatever amount to subscribe to that show.
This book was a delightful read for me. From the unexpected friendship between Fergus and Bonnie to the hijinx that Bonnie would get herself in, it was all amazing. The author did something unique with this book and had a commentary that was directed straight at the reader making you feel a part of the story in a way I haven’t read before. If you are looking for a book that can simultaneously make you belly laughs while breaking your heart. Look no further. This book has it all. Thank you to Montlake and Netgalley for this ARC, but most importantly thank you to the author for this book!
Meghan Quinn has a special way with writing, and this book will not disappoint. There is a lot of humor and bantering between Bonnie and Rowan and is an excellent opposites attract storyline. There are serious themes but MQ does an excellent balance of fun, humor, and tugging at heartstrings.
I absolutely loved this book! I love Meghan’s Brentwood series so when she did a book set it Scotland I was over the moon. I loved in Scotland for 5 years so I love all books set there. Rowan is a broody handyman living in a tiny village in the Scottish Highlands. Bonnie (love the name) is a loud, sassy American who comes to spend six months “finding her purpose” and running the local coffee shop with her BFF. Needless to say, Rowan and Bonnie rub each other the wrong way (and the right way) all throughout the book. Everything is this book was perfection: the love match, the friendships (new and old), the family dynamics, the village life, and even the Boaby Stone. Another fabulous book by Meghan!
